Boeing Employees Support HopeWorks With a $500,000 grant!

The long term goal for HopeWorks Station is to serve as a workforce development center. It is currently home to our social enterprises: GroundWorks Landscaping, WaterWorks Irrigation Services and ReNewWorks Home and Decor Store, in addition to being HopeWorks headquarters - Phase 1.

The Employees Community Fund (ECF) of Boeing Puget Sound awarded a $500,000 grant to HopeWorks Social Enterprises to support and advance the vision of a dynamic social enterprise workforce development center called HopeWorks Station. The grant will be used to complete building improvements, capitalize current enterprises and start a new social enterprise in 2015. This is the single largest capital grant ever awarded to an agency by the ECF.

Housing Hope was founded in Everett, but always with the purpose of serving the needs of all Snohomish County communities. From the outset Housing Hope saw itself as a vehicle for action by people who wanted to be part of a solution for struggling families and individuals held back by the lack of affordable housing. Also, the idea was to help Mayors, faith communities and businesses to find ways to respond to the needs of their neighbors.

Over the past 25 years, opportunities for projects in Stanwood, Arlington, Marysville, Lake Stevens and in the past decade in Sultan, Monroe and Snohomish have emerged. Every one of these developments has been guided by local citizens who care about their home communities and were willing to invest time, talent and treasure to create solutions to desperate housing needs and for related services.

Local Action Committees and Housing Hope Ambassador groups were formed. In 2003-04 the North and East Branch Boards of Housing Hope were formed to provide strategic development strategies for these two regions of Snohomish County.

Building on this grass roots model and recognizing that “local engagement” matters and so does accessibility, Housing Hope has created a very strong regional model. In fact, with new projects underway, there are four Regional Service Centers in operation or development.

1. Housing Hope Village. This center serves the greater Everett area with a comprehensive array of child, education, employment and housing services.

2. Monroe Family Village. In the east region (highway 2 corridor), a new facility with 47 housing units and program space is under construction for an opening in the summer or 2015.

3. HopeWorks. This service center will provide workforce solutions at a transit oriented location near the Everett Transit Station, providing a specialized training and jobs program for families needing career pathways for better income.

4. Twin Lakes Landing. Land at Smokey Point has been acquired and development plans are formulated for a 50 unit housing development with space for programs needed by affordable housing residents in north Snohomish County.

These service centers are part of a plan to engage all corners of Snohomish County. Each has its own Board of volunteers who govern or guide the program. It’s a model that generates local solutions and provides accessible programs. The “regionalization” of Housing Hope is our way of embracing the “legions” of supporters who want us to be nearby and still offer countywide comprehensive solutions.

We treasure the legions that are making our regions vibrant responses to desperate needs. Thanks to all who have made this development possible. We welcome all who want to be a part of the solution.

Society of Hope and Circle of Hope CelebrationThe second annual celebration of two special groups of supporters was held on the 27th anniversary of Housing Hope - Sept 30. Society of Hope members are those who have made a planned gift for Housing Hope (see next page). Circle of Hope members are vital to the success of our agency - they generously contribute $1,000 or more in a calendar year. Our annual event includes dinner and drinks and an inside look at what’s to come for Housing Hope.

An Evening at Emory’s for ChildHopeEmory’s on Silver Lake hosted the second annual exclusive fundraising dinner to raise funds for our ChildHope Initiative. The event was a huge success and thanks to all attendees, food and beverage sponsors, silent auction donors and Emory’s entire staff, more than $30,000 was raised to support homeless and low-income children in Snohomish County!

pucks by ‘Tips players.

Housing Hope Event UpdateThere were several community events in the last few months.

Here’s how your support made these events a success.

Calling all builders!!!We are excited to be hosting a booth at Sorticulture again!

The event will be June 12 - 14th at Legion Park.

We need donations of homemade birdhouses, book houses and dog houses to sell in our booth. All proceeds will go to our

ChildHope Initiative supporting homeless and low-income children in our community.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle has awarded Affordable Housing Program (AHP) $422,953 for Housing Hope’s Monroe Family Village project! This was a highly competitive process, where projects in seven Western States competed for $4.8 million in available grant funding. This award brings total fundraising for the project to $1,138,592 of the $1,230,000 goal!

Since breaking ground at the end of May last year, the 47-unit development has made significant progress and is on budget and on track for completion this summer! With the majority of site development work completed, foundation work and building framing have both begun.

The project is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy by July 2015.

Monroe Family Village UpdateMFV Receives $422,953 affordable housing program award!

Do you like coffee? Visit One Cup espresso stand in Monroe or Silver Cup Coffee Cafe in Everett!From now through March, One Cup will be donating a portion of sales to Housing Hope. The Monroe stand will support Monroe Family Village and the Everett cafe will support ChildHope.Support your caffeine addiction and homeless families in our community at the same time!

The 10 homes at French Creek (pictured) are scheduled to be finished in April!

Monroe Main Street Townhomes is underway with utilities and drainage scheduled to be completed soon. Foundation work will start in February with homeowners beginning work in March. The site will have three triplexes and two duplexes and provide homes for 13 families when completed in early 2016.

Additional property has been identified in the Sky Valley and Arlington. Builder groups will be created soon; the first group will start construction early summer.

Team HomeBuilding Update

We are very excited about Monroe Family Village becoming a Family Service Center - a regional hub designed to deliver critical social services for all Housing Hope residents living in the Skykomish Valley.

Providing these services, including the agency’s acclaimed College of Hope life-skills training program and our rapidly expanding Employment Services, in one central location is designed to enable homeless and very-low income families to grow in self-sufficiency and to escape poverty.

Jo & Steve Saunders

Steve was a staunch supporter of Housing Hope. He served as Chair of the Major Gifts Committee for two capital campaigns and contributed generously. He was an advisor to the organization and a regular attendee of Stone Soup, often serving as a table captain. In 2005 Steve was honored as Housing Hope’s Pioneer Award for long-standing and ongoing support toward addressing homelessness and affordable housing. In 2007 Housing Hope named a new 14 unit transitional housing facility for homeless teen parents Josephine House, in honor of Jo, Steve’s wife of 60 years.

Steve Saunders 1913 - 2014

Peter Henning became a supporter of Housing Hope through our Build Serve Sustain campaign in 2005 after being introduced to us through his good friend Steve Saunders. In 2008 Peter became a champion for the Lincoln Hill Village project in Stanwood, which was built a half mile from where he grew up and next door to his Lincoln High School where he attended. The community building was named the Henning Family Education Center when it opened in June 2011.

More recently Peter has been a huge supporter of HopeWorks, following the development closely and contributing as a Social Investor and donor.

On Oct 31st, Housing Hope held its annual Volunteer Recognition Event. The event honored 625 volunteers for the agency and highlighted those named as Volunteers of the Year.

At the Halloween themed event this year, five individuals, one business and two organizations were recognized for their outstanding service and commitment to organizing

pantries and donations, service to East and North Snohomish County, supporting ChildHope, construction with Team HomeBuilding, working with HopeWorks, administrative service and managing childcare.
