IE University announces its rst competition initiative “HOUSES FOR CHANGE,” hosted by IE School o Archi-tecture and Design. The purpose o the competition is to consider housing as an urgent and basic componento improving urban environments or the poor and at risk and to propose viable housing alternatives or thoseoten neglected or let out.

The competition will be governed by the ollowing rules:

For the rst time in history, more than hal the world’s people live in cities. Over 90 percent o urban growth isoccurring in the developing world, adding an estimated 70 million new residents to urban areas each year.

This is coupled with estimates that about 1/3 o the world’s population are slum dwellers. These settlements may be called dierent names - slums, villas miseria, avelas, bidonvilles, shantytowns - all have a common denomi-nator o urgency and they are ast becoming the norm in our societies. While urban poverty is a complex situa-tion,the physical environment o housing is one crucial aspect to be dealt with i this problem is to be tackled.

The purpose o the competition is to consider housing as an urgent and basic component o improving urbanenvironments or the poor and at risk. Architecture students and recent graduates o architecture, along with

peers rom other elds orming multidisciplinary teams, have a unique role to play in suggesting solutions andapproaches in response to the housing crisis acing many cities today.

Buildings and projects are place-specic and must take into account not only physical realities, but also cultural, economic, and the social context. Entries are invited or housing that is appropriate and aordable or a specicplace (identied by the participating team). The housing must be or an urban area, and thereore address theneeds o many. Schemes or units should be designed so the model can be reproduced/duplicated. (Entries or only one unit or a single amily house or or a rural environment are NOT appropriate).

The housing proposed should respond to the needs (geographic, economic possibilities, materials, construc-tion processes, cultural context, etc.) o a specic community or place, selected by the competition entrants.Participants are reminded that the proposal is directed at those in the most ragile economic situations - thepoor and disenranchised- and should selected their community accordingly . The design solution and budgetmust not assume government subsidies or support.
