Shooting into meleeWe all know the situation when the PCs encounter a group ofmonsters and a battle starts. Some of the PCs are involved directlyin hand-to-hand combat while others try to support them by firingwith bows, crossbow or guns at the enemy. The W !P rulebook p."#$ states that a character firing into melee suffers a -%$& 'allisticSkill penalty. 'ut what happens when a shooter misses( )oes hismissile *ust miss or could it actually hit another combatant in themelee(+nfortunately there are no rules for handling this common combatsituation. Thus there is need for an easy-to-use house-rule that letsyou run your combat smoothly.

'asically the rule is fairly easy f the missed roll lies between thead*usted 'S ie. -%$& 'S/ and the normal 'S another combatparticipant has been hit. The 01 assigns a number to eachcombatant in the melee e2cept the original target starting with ".3e then rolls an appropriate die - if there are four possible targets,roll a d4, if there are 5 roll a d6 rerolling si2es and so on. Thecombatant with the number rolled is hit. +sing the half actionaiming increases the 'S, the -%$& still applies.

Example: Reinwald the Ranger is firing at a combat between hismates Hugo Haudrauf and the dwarf Glimring Stonebiter and agroup of four goblins. His BS is 56%, so his adjusted BS is 6% !56"#$ 6& " a fairl' good chance of hitting. He tries to hit one of thegoblins but unfortunatel' he rolls a (#, which means he has missedhis initial target, and worse he has hit another combatant. )he G*decides the numbers + to Hugo, # to Glimring and " 5 to each ofthe remaining goblins !note that onl' three goblins are count, asone goblin was the initial target&.
