HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2008 STATE OF HAWAII H.R. NO. HOUSE RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII CREATES A TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EXTENSION SERVICE. 1 WHEREAS, in this global economy, the people and businesses 2 of the United States need to remain current on the various 3 technological developments to remain competitive; and 4 5 WHEREAS, in the past, when there was a need to educate the 6 average citizen outside of formal classrooms, an extension of 7 the local university was established to provide a service that 8 enabled consumers to keep up-to-date with trends and evolving 9 technology; and 10 11 WHEREAS, this "Extension Service" also enabled universities 12 to attract additional funding for research activities that would 13 directly benefit consumers; and 14 15 WHEREAS, our location at the hub of the Pacific and our 16 unique way of life put us in a position to be a model for 17 innovative thinking throughout the world; and 18 19 WHEREAS, growing environmental concerns as well as the need 20 for renewable energy amplify the need for new ideas that can 21 lead our state towards being more self-sustaining as well as 22 providing a competitive employment base; now, therefore 23 24 BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 25 Twenty-Fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular 26 Session of 2008, that the University of Hawaii System is 27 requested to create a Technology and Innovation Extension 28 Service; and 29 30 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the educational opportunity 31 provided by the Technology and Innovation Extension Service be 32 available to those who are not enrolled as students; and HR HMIA 19-2008.doc 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111

12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the researched based3 information provided by the Technology and Innovation Extension4 Service shall be free to all those who seek it; and56 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Technology and Innovation7 Extension Service should stimulate the use of new technology and8 spur innovation as a means to sustain and enhance our way of9 life; and

1011 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this12 Resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Hawaii
