Remembering herhusband’s smileBY WAYNE WOOD

Eileen Johnson is a soft-spokenfourth-grade teacher whojust lost the love of her life,

and she wanted to talk about him. She knocked at my door one

recent afternoon, introduced her-self, and said that she had come bythe Office of News and Communi-cations and asked to speak with aneditor, and somebody directed herto me.She told me that her husband

of 30 years, Kenneth Johnson,(“Kenny” in her words, and mem-ory) died in June, a few weeksafter a car wreck in which both heand Mrs. Johnson were injured. He had severe injuries, she said,

but seemed to be recovering atfirst. He was treated at VanderbiltUniversity Medical Center, alwayswith Mrs. Johnson by his side, sometimes in a wheelchair herselfas she recovered from seriousinjuries she suffered in the acci-dent. She had hoped for his recov-ery, but despite the best efforts of his doctors and nurses, Kennydied. “It was the other driver’s fault,”

Mrs. Johnson said quietly. Notwith evident anger, but with noeffort to gloss over the fact that theworld can turn on something asrandom as a stranger making abad decision in your vicinity on aneighborhood road.As she talked about her late

husband, and the cruel turn theirlives had taken this year, Mrs.Johnson moved between smilingfondly at a favorite memory andtearing up when the reality of theloss came to her again. She remembered how Kenny

had encouraged her career, urgedher to continue her education, andhad researched master ’s degreeprograms for her. With her years ofservice to Metro Schools and hereducation, and with the degree hecheered her on to complete, that

This is the one time each year to review your insurance andspending account coverage and make choices for the upcom-ing calendar year. The benefit elections you make continuethrough the plan year (beginning Jan. 1, 2012), and cannot bechanged unless you experience a qualifying life event.Even if you plan to keep the same coverage in 2012, this is

an active enrollment, which means you’ll need to log on to theonline benefits enrollment tool and make your elections. Ifyou don’t enroll, you will have the following default benefitsfor 2012:

• Medical Plan—Aetna Standard, employee-only tier (even ifyou currently waive medical plan coverage)

• Dental Plan—no coverage

• Vision Plan—no coverage

• Accidental Death and Dismemberment—no coverage

• Flexible Spending Accounts—no spending accounts

Note: Your current Short-term Disability election will not change

Important Notes for 2012

Health Plan

• The same health plans will stay in place for 2012: AetnaStandard, Aetna HealthFund and Blue Cross Select.

• Deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums willremain the same.

• We’ve been able to keep premium increases lower thanmany other employers and continue to have cost based onsalary level.

• NEW: Preventive care is expanding and you won’t have acopay for most routine or wellness services.

• Your child(ren) by birth, marriage or adoption—up to age26—can now be covered by your health plan, regardless oftheir access to other health insurance coverage.

• Navitus will remain the prescription provider (prescriptioncoverage is included with your health plan, no matterwhich plan you select). Copayments for tier three (non-pre-ferred) drugs will increase by $5. Specialty drug 90-dayprescriptions will no longer be covered, but 30-day sup-plies may still be obtained through the Vanderbilt Outpa-tient Pharmacies.

Dental Plan

• NEW: BlueCross BlueShield DentalBlue PPO will replacethe CIGNA PPO, resulting in lower premium costs.

• The CIGNA DHMO plan will remain the same, but premi-ums have increased.

Vision Plan

• NEW: Superior Vision Services replaces VSP as the newplan provider for 2012.

• The plan’s rates are lower than the 2011 vision rates.

• Superior Vision offers a more convenient network ofproviders, including Vanderbilt Eye Institute, WalMart, Tar-get and LensCrafters.

Short-term Disability If this is your first time enrolling in Short-term Disability, you’ll need to complete the Hartford’s “proof of insurability”process. This means that the Hartford requires applicants torespond to questions about health and any existing conditionson their online enrollment site. If you already have Short-termDisability insurance through the Hartford, this does not applyto you.

There is a list, famous among astronomers,

of 110 faint objects in the night sky, first

cataloged by French astronomer Charles

Messier in the 18th century. A “Messier marathon”

is when astronomers begin at dusk and work until

dawn, hoping to locate every single one, searching

amid the field of stars for each elusive light source,

be it a distant galaxy or an ancient supernova.

Vanderbilt pediatrician Donna Hummellis one of the most accomplished amateurastronomers in the region. She is intenton passing that knowledge on to others.

Donna Hummell, M.D., knows the nightsky so well she has seen every Messierobject, participated in four marathons, and once sighted 103 of the 110 in a sin-gle night, foiled in the elusive remainingseven objects only by the horizon andthe light of the sun.“Not many have done that, especially

by hand,” says Rocky Alvey, programmanager of Vanderbilt’s Dyer Observa-tory, with obvious admiration.Hummell, associate professor of Pedi-

atrics and Clinical Director of PediatricAllergy and Immunology, examines chil-dren for a living and the cosmos for fun.She is an amateur astronomer who hasachieved some notable accomplishments, including serving as vice president of theBarnard Seyfert Astronomical Society(BSAS), the organization for Nashvillianswho are interested in the cosmos. Her interest in astronomy as an adult

was kindled on a trip with her then-middle-school-age son Hunter to Van-derbilt’s Dyer Observatory to observean eclipse of the moon.“That was really my first trip to Dyer,

and it was incredible to see the lunarsurface in that kind of detail,” she says.

It wasn’t long after that the family, including daughter Rachel and Hum-mell’s husband, Noel Tulipan, M.D.,professor of Neurological Surgery, bought a small telescope and Hummellbegan scanning the sky for fun. Later, as her interest grew, she bought

a larger telescope that allows her to seemore distant and faint objects, but, sheis quick to note, amateur astronomy ismore about the enjoyment of the skythan the hardware.“Just using binoculars to look up at the

night sky can be eye-opening,” she says.Hummell says she enjoys the observa-

tional aspect of astronomy; her sonHunter was more interested in thephysics—so much so, in fact, that he isnow a physics major at Washington Uni-versity in St. Louis. Rachel stuck closer toher mom and dad’s biomedical careers—she is studying to be a veterinarian.

A desire to know the world“My interest in science started when Iwas a young girl,” Hummell says. “Mygrandfather was a self-taught naturalscientist. He got me interested in rockcollecting. I really enjoyed that a lot.

“My mother and grandmother wereavid gardeners and knew a lot aboutplants. I think that’s how I got interestedin science.”Rather than geology or botany,

though, her interests turned towardmedicine. She was a chemistry major incollege and decided to focus on pedi-atric immunology for a career. But choosing a career path in one sci-

ence doesn’t take away interest from allothers. The night sky is big enough foreverybody, from poets to physicists topeople who just want to know whatthey’re seeing—and Hummell says shefell into that latter category.“[For a long time] I enjoyed the sky,

but I didn’t know what I was lookingat,” she says. Now, it’s fair to say, she does. In addi-

tion to viewing the Messier objects, sheis engaged in making her way throughthe Herschel 400, a list of deep spaceobjects that are even more challengingto find with a telescope. She has observed a transit of Venus

across the sun in Hungary, and on afamily visit to Argentina managed toconnect with a local astronomy groupand was able to observe Eta Carinae, astar system with a surrounding nebulathat is a highlight of the skies of theSouthern Hemisphere. When somebody asks her what her

favorite sight in the night sky is, shesays quietly, “I never get tired of theOrion Nebula”—a brilliant cloud ofinterstellar dust where stars are stillbeing born. She says she thinks the wellspring of

both astronomy and medicine are adesire to know the world.“I entered medicine through the sci-

ence side,” she says. “I’ve always beeninterested in the way things work. Math and science are tools to understand the world.”

Sharing knowledge Hummell has high standing in the com-munity of Middle Tennessee amateurastronomers. “She is very knowledgeable about

astronomy, and is willing to share herknowledge and leadership with every-

For a long time I enjoyed the sky, but

I didn’t know what I was looking at.

When not scanning the cosmos, Hummell sees patients at Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks (thiswas move-in day). She is Clinical Director of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.

body,” says local attorney Joe Boyd, atwo-term president of the BSAS who hasworked with Hummell on projects ofthe society. Alvey, the Dyer Observatory program

manager, also praises her willingness to

help out by serving the astronomy soci-ety. “The survival of the BSAS dependson getting people like her involved,” he says. And while nobody gets involved in

something like an astronomy societybecause of a deep desire to sit throughcommittee meetings, Hummell says shefinds value in helping provide theadministrative framework to allow theclub to meet its goal of service to scienceand to the community. She has taught at public star parties

hosted by the astronomical society, and isa counselor for Boy Scouts seeking meritbadges related to science or astronomy.“The members have a passion for

teaching,” she says. “I consider myself ateacher in the medical field, and I seethat a lot in the members of the BSAS.”

Sometimes, she says, she thinksabout her grandfather with love andgratitude for interesting her in rock col-lecting when she was a young girl.

“I believe I studied and majored inchemistry in college because he was aself-taught chemist and metallurgist,”she says. “He died of lung cancer whenI was 16 years old. I never got a chanceto discuss chemistry seriously with him,and I missed his loving encouragementwhen the college courses becametougher.“It is so important to put that spark of

interest in a young person,” she says. She doesn’t add, because she doesn’t

have to: because sometimes, if theyoung person learns to live with anopen mind, that spark never goes out.

Rocky Alvey, program manager at Vanderbilt’s Dyer Observatory, is an admirer of Hummell’s knowledge of the night sky.

Knowing how to use her 10-inch Orion Intellis-cope reflecting telescope allows Hummell to findfaint objects in the dark sky.

step is within reach. “He wanted meto become a principal,” she said. “Hewould say, ‘Always be looking toadvance.’”Mrs. Johnson showed me the pro-

gram that she had designed for herhusband’s memorial service. Shewrote the text for the inside cover, which included: “Kenneth walked theworld with a loving, beautiful smile, and a kind heart each day. Anyonewho knew Kenneth would always sayto him, ‘Kenneth, your smile can lightup a room.’”The Rev. Marcy Thomas, a chaplain

at VUMC, is one of those who knowsabout that smile:“I was one of the fortunate ones

who will always carry with me theremembrance of that beautiful smileand Kenny’s accompanying greatheart,” she said. “As hospital chap-lain, it was my privilege to get toknow both Kenny and Eileen whenthey were hospitalized at the sametime in 2007. In succeeding years, andmost recently after their accident, ourfriendship deepened. “I knew Kenny to be curious and

smart—a lifelong learner,” she con-

tinued. “As several people com-mented at his memorial service, hewas a great encourager, sincerelyinterested and invested in the livesof his family and friends. And, Ihave never seen a couple who caredfor one another as wholeheartedly asdid Kenny and Eileen. I marveled attheir devotedness.”One of the last things Mrs. Johnson

told me was she and Kenny had cele-brated their 30th wedding anniver-sary last year. Their 31st would havebeen this past July 31. Follow Wayne on Twitter: @woodw
