BUSH TREASURE: This architecturally designed and beautifully crafted home is one-of-a-kind. WHEN the owners set about designing a home to put on their large bush-clad section in Mokorua 10 years ago they knew exactly what they wanted.

They had bought the 6203 square metre section in Orchid Rise in 1997 at a time when all their friends were buying lifestyle properties. They wanted the same peace and privacy but a home nice and handy to town.

Number 4 provides the ultimate in privacy and is literally five minutes from the CBD and Ohope.

“It’s nice being in a neighbourhood, and there are neighbours around, you just can’t see or hear them,” they say. “When you come home at night it’s like you’re entering into another world, it is so quiet.”

The couple built a number of houses before this, always opting for ultra-modern, however they found

they tended to date rather quickly.Their dream this time was to build a log house but

with the help of architect Grant Andrews the design evolved to become much more. They wanted a house that was full of character and looked old so it wouldn’t date.

To achieve this they used as many natural and recycled products as they could, meaning almost every part of this home has a history. The doors are recycled rimu, complete with nail marks. The heart matai floors are more than 100 years old and were once a ballroom dance floor in a historic Wanganui building.

The cast iron bath in the main bathroom dates back to 1921 and came from a villa moved off the site now occupied by McDonalds.

The vanity wash stands are rimu with modern basins and a slab of macrocarpa makes a statement in the kitchen.

The ceiling and beams are Lawson Cypress and Douglas fir and the log poles are pine, as is the board and batten/shingle exterior.

When relatives from England came to stay they complimented the Prevettes on a great “renovation”. It was the ultimate compliment because it meant they had achieved what they set out to and created an authentic home.

The house is built on three levels, each featuring decks overlooking two spring-fed garden ponds and a bush-clad valley. With approximately 145 square metres of wrap-around decking there is always sun and shade available.

On the main floor are the living areas, one bed-room, a bathroom and laundry

Downstairs is a media/games room and upstairs there are two bedrooms and an office. The master bedroom, across a bridge walkway, includes a walk-through wardrobe, ensuite and a cute Juliet balcony.

Both bathrooms have gorgeous leadlight windows and – like the rest of the house – are wired for sound. Perhaps the only thing not recycled is the state-of-the-art sound system and lighting system which provides sound to all rooms including the bathrooms and the decks.

There is separate garaging, built in the same style as the house, with double car parking, workshop, bathroom and provisions for a mezzanine floor.

Outside the grounds are beautifully landscaped.
