HOUSE OF PRAYER LUTHERAN CHURCH “Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, Serve in Love”

“When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you’. Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’”(John 21:15) This exchange between Jesus and Simon Peter happens after the resurrection. Since Peter denied knowing Jesus three times after Jesus was arrested, Jesus wants to make sure that Peter is now ready to help lead the ministry that Jesus began, a ministry of sharing God’s love through serv-ing others. As disciples of Jesus, we too hear these same words ring in our own heads as he asks us to feed his lambs. But sometimes it can be easy for us to disregard Jesus’ command to help out the neigh-bor. It’s easy to get wrapped up in our own worlds and worry about our own needs. While it’s un-deniable that we certainly need to take care of ourselves, we also have that higher calling as disci-ples to give of ourselves.
Ash Wednesday was on February 26th, and traditionally people use these 40 days of Lent to give up something in order to make themselves better. You know the drill, and many of you have probably joined in on this Lenten discipline. I am not going to eat chocolate, or my favorite dessert, or fried food, or drink alcohol. This is a great way to show self-discipline, but maybe we have things backwards. Instead of giving something up for Lent, maybe we should take something on.
In the tradition of Jesus and Simon Peter, why don’t we accept the challenge to instead give of ourselves in a way that makes other people better. What if we each found a way to give at church- by volunteering to assist with worship or cleaning up the facilities and grounds. Or maybe we would like to help a church member or a neighbor at home complete a project or accomplish a task. Or maybe we can volunteer at a local school or at the hospital and serve where needed. The possibilities are endless.
Jesus loved us enough to go to the cross. We can certainly reciprocate that love by being proactive and acting upon the words or our Lord by tending to Jesus’ flock. See y’all on Sunday, Pastor Eric Youngdahl

Beginning Sunday, March 8, we will begin our next year long study as we explore Barbara Brown Taylor’s book, “Home By Another Way.” Dr. Brown shares with us her sermons which walk us through the church year from the expectancy of Advent to the fires of Pentecost...and beyond. Her themes arise not only from a particular feast or fast, but out of the perennial questions of faith: doubt, grace, anger, and jubilation. Each week we will encourage church members to read one of these sermons and contemplate the message that is proclaimed. The sermons that we will be reading for the month of March are:
March 8 Lenten Disciple p. 65 March 15 The Voice of Love p. 81 March 22 In the Name of Law and Order p. 86 March 29 The Man in the Middle p. 90 March 31 The Commendation p. 94
On Sundays, be sure to join the Adult Sunday School class at 9:45 am as we have informal discussion on the sermon of the week and the Bible passage that it is attached to. Bring your book, your Bible, and yourself!

QUILTING OPPORTUNITIES THIS MONTH
The schedule for January is: • Wednesday, March 11—9am until noon • Wednesday, March 25—9 am until noon • Thursday, March 26—3pm to 7pm
Quilt tops are made by members of the congregation. To learn how to make a quilt top, go to: https://lwr.org/get-involved/quilts.
On these meeting days, we simply put down a sheet, add batting, put the quilt tops on and then tie the three layers together with crochet thread. We can always use more help, so feel free to join us no matter your skill level. We can also use material to use for making quilt tops if you have scraps that are looking for a home.
HoP member Nanette Hlavaty shares her knowledge and passion of making cards. You can take some home and leave some for the church to use. The classes are typically on selected Thursdays in room 210 (Fellowship Room.) She has most supplies so you just need to bring scissors, paper cutter and tape or glue. If you haven’t tried a class and would like to attend, contact Nanette Hlavaty to include you in the group texts.
CARD MAKING CLASS—Thursday, March 19, 1pm
Looking Ahead: Blessing of the Quilts for Lutheran World Relief Every year on Palm Sunday, we have the blessing of the Quilts for LWR. After church is over on that date, the quilts need to be folded and boxed. Then they will be labeled for shipping. The boxed quilts are taken to a central shipping location in West Houston to be shipped to the warehouse in Maryland along with all quilts from our area and the Brenham area.
We need volunteers to help box and label. These are then stored for one week and delivered on the Monday after Easter.
We really need someone to deliver these quilts. We also need strong, sturdy boxes to pack the quilts into. Please bring boxes up to church before or on Palm Sunday.
ASSISTANCE NEEDED IN FUTURE TO SHIP QUILTS FROM HOUSE OF PRAYER
Boxes large enough to hold multiple quilts
are requested.

We will meet on Tuesday, February 25 at 7:00 pm upstairs in room 207 and continue our studies from Gather magazine. The following is from their website: Winter 2020: “We are called!” by Kathryn A. Kleinhans. Reformer Martin Luther used the word “vocation” or “calling” to refer to all aspects of human life. We are called to respond to God not just in our personal relationship with God but in our relationships with family and friends, in our work, and in our communities. This four part Bible study will explore stories from both the Old and New Testament. As we reflect on how our biblical forebears heard and responded
to God’s call, we will gain insight into how God is calling us—and how God may be calling others through us. Session 3 “We are called! Called to Serve” will be discussed. The author, Kathryn A. Kleinhans, serves as dean of Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. All are welcomed! Please enter using the side door.

With grace, emotional keenness and a steady moral searchlight, Luke Allnutt guides the reader through the darkest despair and back to hope. A brave and intense novel.” Please come and join us to discuss the book. If you haven’t read it yet, come and see what other readers thought.

Your generosity helps to support the students emotionally, socially and academically. If you haven’t heard of CIS, HoP has entered into partnership with CIS programs. These programs support students at Clear Lake High School, Space Center Intermediate, Clear Lake Elementary, Falcon Pass Elementary, and Whitcomb Elementary.
In March, please consider donating Male underwear; specifically for large children or men.
All of these donations can be left in the bins located in the Narthex.

Council reviewed the H.O.P. Constitution, By-Laws, and budget responsibilities for the benefit of new council members.
Continued discussion was held about celebration of H.O.P.’s payoff of mortgage. Pastor is working with the quilters to create a “banner” for display in the sanctuary as well as additional
recognition at the April 19th Family Picnic. With Lakeside Lutheran in the process of selling their church building and property, H.O.P. will work with their
staff to temporarily store Lakeside’s grand piano. Council will begin to look at H.O.P.’s current Vision and Strategy, and with volunteers, reassess our next steps in
growing the ministries at H.O.P. Pastor’s Report Lent starts 2/26. The Ashes to Go program will be offered again this year and a schedule of Lenten services
offered to those in the community who participate. Pastor and Stephen have met with families of the Senior High to begin planning for the Summer 2020 canoe
adventure in Minnesota.
WORSHIP TEAMS THIS MONTH
We thank you for your year-long dedication, flexibility and love of serving! It is deeply appreciated. A New Year means new chances being a worker in God’s kingdom to “Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, Serve in Love.”
Please consider continuing your current roles of service and may add a new one to try! A list of volunteer worship
role descriptions is on the website to read if you are interested in trying out a new role on a worship team. It also shares the amount of team members needed when the church is utilizing the two-worship service schedule.
