In 1904, aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont wanted a device that allowed him to determine the time while flying without letting go of the controls.

His friend Louis Cartier delivered, thereby transforming the popular watch from a device concealed in the pocket to an accessory proudly displayed

on the wrist. The original geometric design, with its rounded corners and authoritative joints, has endured in a series of celebrated Santos de Cartier

collections.

Now, throughout the Santos® 100 Carbon collection, the model that started it all bears a unique and incredible new finish:

amorphous diamond-like carbon de Cartier, also known as ADLC.

ADLC is a remarkable coating exclusive to Cartier within the watch industry. As the name implies, ADLC is nearly as hard as

diamonds — virtually indestructible. An improvement on basic diamond-like coating (DLC), ADLC enhances the performance

and extends the lifespan of any material, and it can assume any texture, from polished to satined.

Through a process called plasma-assisted chemical vapor depositions (PACVD) conducted under vacuum conditions, hydrogen

and carbon combine to uniformly cover steel, titanium or gold. The resulting ADLC coating provides extraordinary resistance to

scratches, corrosion — even fingerprints. It is also exceptionally easy to clean and comfortable to wear.

Following the precedent set by that first Santos wristwatch made by Cartier himself, the Santos® 100 Carbon collection featuring

ADLC represents yet another exciting first in the luxury timepiece industry.
