May Adult BINGOAdult Bingo took place in May. We had a decent sized crowd and lots of prizes were given out. Congratulations to the “Cover All” winners! Amanda Thesing and Steve Stock decided to split the $250 grand prize. Cover All is sponsored by Consuelo Souders with Keller Williams Realty and Brian Souders with Supreme Lending.

Concert in the ParkWe were lucky there was ice cream at the Concert in the Park because it was a hot one! More than 200 residents came out to enjoy the live music and free food at our first Concert in the Park of the year. The Brittney Lee and Chad Band kept the residents entertained while hot dogs were served thanks to Consuelo Souders with Keller Williams Realty. Sticky Fingers provided the ice cream, Google Fiber provided chips and Dentistry for Kids provided water. Residents enjoyed free Highland Creek koozies and frisbees. Juliette Harris was the winner of the bubble gum guessing jar and Kelly Koller won a $50 visa gift card. Both prizes were provided by Consuelo Souders with Keller Williams Realty. View the event video on the Highland Creek Facebook Page shot by Byron Sanders!

June Movie in the ParkUnfortunately, we had to make a last minute cancelation to the June Movie in the Park due to rain. We were able to give out some popcorn and glow necklaces before the rain started coming down. King of Pops also came out to sell their delicious popsicles. The next Movie in the Park will be August 11th and the movie will be Finding Dory.

Tween/Teen LuauAloha! Highland Creek Tweens got their Hula on at the Tween Luau. Despite the night being cut short due to lightning, we were still able to get some games in. Congratulations to the winners: Kacie Moore and Lukas Boucher each won the Cannonball Contest. Mekenna Riley and Lukas Boucher both won the Belly Flop Contest. The following team won the tug of war: Ben Childers, Casey Crawford, Lukas Boucher, Michael Gilbert and Aidan Lynch. Thank you to Elle Riley Photography for capturing the night’s fun AND to Kona Ice for providing the Icees. A big thank you to our parent volunteer, Lisa Reed! #HCTWEENLUAU

Tween Scavenger HuntHighland Creek Tweens were up early one morning to compete in a challenging Scavenger Hunt. The first leg was a hunt to find various items. The second leg was a challenge that used both mental and physical skills to complete. The three teams did extremely well, and all of the kids went home with a gift card prize. The first-place winners were team “Random Girls”. The second-place winners were team “Untitled”. The third-place team was “Bandana Boys”.

4th of JulyMore than 200 Highland Creek Residents came out to show their American Spirit at our Annual 4th of July Parade. Residents walked along with the Station 31 Fire truck. After the parade was over the Fire truck raised its ladder and a fireman climbed to the top and waved an American flag. A special thank you to Lindsey Riley with Keller Williams Realty who sponsored the water and gave away a Tommy Bahama Rolling Cooler to one lucky resident. David Lewis was the winner of the cooler. Also, a special thank you to Lisa Crates Photography for taking pictures of the days events.

Upon retiring, many people relocate to enjoy a more favorable climate, or to be closer to

grown children, or to live in an area they’ve visited and enjoyed. If you, too, are thinking of moving someday, you’ll want to study possible

locations, but you also need to be aware that where you eventually decide to live can greatly affect

your savings and investment strategies – both now and during your retirement.

Here are some relocation costs to consider:

Housing• – Not surprisingly, the larger the city, the more expensive the housing is likely to be. Also, locations near an ocean or the mountains tend to be more costly. But the type of housing you select – house, apartment or condominium – can also affect your financial picture in terms of initial expense, maintenance and possible tax benefits. Plus, you can now find newer types of arrangements, such as senior cooperative housing, in which you own a share of the community and have a voice in how it’s run.

Healthcare• – If you are 65 or older when you retire, you’ll have Medicare to cover some of your health care costs, though you’ll still likely need to purchase some type of supplemental coverage. However, out-of-pocket health care expenses may vary in different parts of the country, so this is something else you’ll want to check out before relocating. Of course, the availability of good medical facilities may be just as important to you as healthcare costs.

Taxes• – You may hear about people moving to a different state to lower their tax burden during retirement. A few states don’t have personal state income taxes, and many others offer favorable tax breaks on retirement income, so, if taxes are a major concern, you’ll want to research the tax situation of prospective retirement locations. You may also want to consult with your tax advisor.

These aren’t all the areas you will need to consider when estimating your total cost of living in a retirement destination, but they should give you a good idea of what you can expect. And your choice of where to live as a retiree can affect your financial strategy in at least two ways: how you invest today and how much you can withdraw from your retirement accounts when you’re retired.

Regarding how you invest today, you should evaluate whether your current investment strategy is likely to produce the resources needed to support you adequately in the retirement location you’ve chosen. So, for example, if you think you’re going to live in a fairly expensive place, you may need to reduce your expenses, delay retirement or work part time.

Your choice of a retirement destination also may affect how much money you withdraw each year from your 401(k) and IRA. When choosing an appropriate withdrawal rate, you’ll need to consider other variables – your age, the amount of money in your retirement accounts, other available assets, etc. – but your cost of living will be a key factor. A financial professional can help you determine the withdrawal rate that’s right for you.

When you retire, it can be a great feeling to live where you want, but you’ll enjoy it more if you’re fully aware of the costs involved – and the financial steps you’ll need to take.

Baked Buritto Casserolefrom www.writtenreality.com

1 pound of ground beef1 small onion, chopped1 pack of taco seasoning1 can refried beans1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted1/2 cup sour cream1 pack large flour tortillas2 1/2 cups of shredded Mexican blend cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is no longer pink and drain.

Add the taco seasoning and refried beans and heat through.

In a separate bowl, blend the mushroom soup with the sour cream. Then spread half of the soup mixture in the bottom of a baking dish.

Add a layer of 3 flour tortillas to the top of the soup mixture. You will need to cut or tear the tortillas and overlap them.

Spread on a layer of the ground beef mixture and top with about a cup of cheese.

Repeat all of these layers and top with the remaining cheese.

Bake in a 9 x 13 baking dish for about 20 minutes until cheese is nicely melted. Enjoy!

You could also add a can of green chilies for a little punch of flavor, or some jalapeño peppers for an extra kick, too.

Zucchini Cakesfrom www.lifesambrosia.com

1 large zucchni grated (about 2 cups), excess water removed (Note: To do this, after you grate the zucchini, put the grated zucchini into paper towels and squeeze to release the water)1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese1 cup panko bread crumbsSprinkle of ground nutmeg, about 1/8 teaspoon (Note: If you add too much it can quickly take over the taste, less is more)1/4 teaspoon paprika1 clove garlic, minced1 eggSalt and pepper to taste1-2 tablespoons olive oil

Combine all ingredients, except olive oil, in a bowl and mix thoroughly. Using a heaping tablespoon, form the mixture into 8 patties.

Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Once heated, add patties and cook until golden brown. About 3-4 minutes per side. Serve.

These are great when served with a dollop of ranch dressing. Enjoy!

Chocolate Italian Love Cakefrom www.chewnibblenosh.com (Adapted from Paula Deen)

1 package chocolate cake mix (Betty Crocker brand recommended), and the ingredients needed to make the cake according to the package2 lbs. ricotta cheese4 eggs3/4 cup sugar1 tsp. pure vanilla extract1 (5.1 oz.) package instant chocolate pudding mix1 cup cold milk8 oz. thawed Cool Whip

Preheat your oven to 350°F and spray a 9x13” pan with nonstick spray. In a large bowl, mix together your cake mix according to the directions on the box. Set aside.

In another bowl, using a hand mixer, beat together the ricotta cheese, 4 eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.

*The following directions are correct. The layers switch during the baking time!

Pour the cake batter into the prepared baking dish. Spread to fill the pan evenly. Once the cake batter is in place, carefully pour the cheese mixture evenly over the top of the cake batter. Spread to cover the cake batter as best as you can. Bake the cake at 350° for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.

Once the cake is cool, stir the pudding mix and milk together with a whisk until combined. Carefully, fold the Cool Whip into the pudding until combined. Spread the pudding mixture over the top of the cooled cake.

Cover the cake and refrigerate at least 6 hours before serving. It tastes even better the next day.

W e hope you and your families are enjoying all the “summer fun”

Highland Creek has to offer… four pools, six tennis courts, eight parks, walking trails, play grounds, shuffle board, bocce ball, etc. Additionally, one of the tennis courts at Clarke Creek Park has been painted with pickle ball lines for those who enjoy this sport. Below, we have included a few items of interest and information for you.

Nominees for Board of DirectorsThe Highland Creek Board of Directors consists of nine members that work closely with Hawthorne Management Company to oversee and manage all aspects of the Highland Creek Community Association. In September, three positions on the Board will be open for election by the Voting Members representing each Village. If you have a desire to serve on the Board of Directors and volunteer your time and expertise, please contact Leah Singleton at Hawthorne Management at 704-377-0114. Your name and contact information will be forwarded to the Nominating Committee. A member of the committee will call each nominee to discuss the role of a director and answer any questions the nominee may have regarding this position. Please be prepared to submit a brief personal biography and willing to commit a minimum of eight hours per month to your role as a Director of the Association.

Voting Member BallotsThe Annual Meeting of the Association is scheduled for September 18, 2018. Each unit owner will soon be receiving a ballot to elect a Voting Member to represent their village or sub-association for 2018-2019. This resident will also represent your neighborhood at the bi-monthly Advisory Committee Meetings. The resident with the second highest number of votes will serve as your Alternate Voting Member and serve in the absence of the Voting Member. Please return your ballot. If your Village ballot does not have the name of a nominee on it, pull together some neighbors and ask an interested resident to serve in this capacity. You may write in a nominee (with his/her permission) on the ballot. The following Villages were not represented at the Advisory Committee Meetings this past year: Dominion Ridge, Hidden Meadow, Laurel Run, and Wingrove. It is important that each village and sub association elect an Owner to serve in this capacity. The representative often sends out a newsletter to the residents of his/her neighborhood following the Advisory Committee meetings with items of community interest, current initiatives before the Board of Directors, city/county issues affecting Highland Creek, upcoming association sponsored activities, etc. Representatives also benefit a village by bringing specific concerns before the Board of Directors at Advisory Committee meetings. In addition, a Voting Member casts a vote for all owners in a Village in the election of Board members, consideration of amendments to the governing documents,

approval of annexation of property by the Association, and other business matters as specified in the recorded documents of the community.

MailboxesUnfortunately, old age is inevitable and has taken a toll on some of the mailboxes in Highland Creek; mailboxes that are freshly painted and in good repair help to beautify the streetscape throughout the community. If your mailbox is faded, rusted, leaning or missing parts, please take the time to make the necessary repairs. The entire community will benefit from this and your neighbors will greatly appreciate it too! Should you need help with the repair of your mailbox post or need to purchase a new one, Watson Welding can assist with this and may be contacted at 704-821-7140.

Help Keep Your Streets Well LitThe streetlights located in the community are operated and maintained by Duke Energy through an agreement with the city. The lights and power supplied to them are part of the municipal services each owner pays for in property taxes. If you notice a light not working or damaged, please report the street address located closest to the pole to Duke Energy at 1-800-POWERON (800-769-3766) or on their website, www.duke-energy.com/north-carolina/outages.asp

Tree and Shrub MaintenanceFor the safety and enjoyment of pedestrians, please remember to trim back or limb up shrubs and trees that have grown into or hang over the sidewalk or street.

Tall Grass and Other Yard MaintenanceBeautiful yards make beautiful communities. Please note that Highland Creek defines lawn care standards as follows:

Grass mowed on a regular schedule to • maintain a maximum height of 5”.Pull or kill the weeds throughout the • lawn, shrub beds and any trees in the yard.Trim/edge the grass off the sidewalk • and driveway.Mow to eliminate grass seed head • growth (sprouting).Mow grass between sidewalk and • street.Fertilize, aerate and reseed with fescue • seed on an annual basis. Trim/prune shrubs and trees to prevent • overgrowth.

Thank you to those who persistently work to maintain their yard and uphold these standards for Highland Creek. For those whose yards are in need of maintenance, please talk with a landscape maintenance company or professional at a garden center for guidance. It is important for you to take diligent steps in early fall to restore the health and attractiveness of your lawn.

Yards with grass taller than 12 inches in Mecklenburg County and taller than 8 inches in Cabarrus County are in violation of City Code Ordinances and can be reported anonymously as follows:

Cabarrus County – Contact the Code Enforcement Officer, 704-920-5150

Mecklenburg County – Contact the City of Charlotte by calling 311 or going to the link www.servicerequest.charmeck.org.

Hide Your Trash CansMany new residents have moved into the community over the spring and summer and are not aware of the proper storage location of garbage cans. The Highland Creek governing documents state that all garbage cans should be stored or screened such that they are not visible from the

street or neighboring houses. Residents may 1) relocate the storage of the garbage can such that it is not visible (garage is preferred), 2) screen it with mature plant material, or 3) screen it by constructing an approved lattice enclosure (call HMC for specifications and drawing of this enclosure).

A Few Recent Improvements

New mulch has been • installed at all parks in the community.Parking lots at all four pools • have been re-paved and re-striped.Flooring in the Sports Club • foyer has been replaced and kitchen cabinets have been painted. All brick monuments at • Village entrances have been cleaned.Software for the gate access • system has been upgraded.Entrance signs on the • Cabarrus County side are being refurbished. Installation of summer • pineneedles has been done.

Remember: Carry your photo ID cards when using any of the amenities in the community.
