walk and lift heavy objects. When its hands are replaced with

customised attachments, it can complete tasks without direct

human supervision, thanks to an on-board computer and

    plenty of sensors.

Atlas will someday be working alongside people in rescuing

victims of earthquakes, typhoons and other disasters, helping

to carry supplies or clear debris. It also could be sent into

situations deemed too dangerous for humans, such as a

    nuclear plant leak or explosion.

announced the discovery of - Kepler-186

    - an M-dwarf star, much smaller and

cooler than the Sun. Orbiting around it is

Kepler 186f - the first validated,

    Earth-size planet.

Elisa V. Quintana of the SETI Institute and

NASAs Ames Research Center said: It

has the right size and is at the right

distance to have properties similar to our

    home planet.

Kepler 186f is the latest planet to be

    Victoria Meadows, an astrobiologist

    and planetary astronomer at the

    University of Washington said: The

planet is more efficient at absorbing

energy from its star to avoid

freezing over. Which is why this

    planet is still considered potentially

habitable, as long as it has a dense

    enough atmosphere, even though

it receives less light from its star

than Mars does from our Sun.

The discovery marks a milestone in the

quest to find planets that are not just

Earth-sized, but truly Earth-like. Out of

the 1,800 confirmed planets, fewer than

two dozen sit in the habitable zone

where its not too hot for water to boil

off into space and not too cold for it to

    remain in a permanent deep-freeze.

And none of them are as close in size to

Earth as Kepler-186f, whose diameter is

    only 10% larger.

The planet's size influences the strength

of its gravitational pull, and its ability to

pull in abundant gases like hydrogen

and helium. At Kepler-186f's size, there

is a small chance that it could have

gathered up a thick hydrogen and

helium envelope, so there's a very

excellent chance that it does have a

    rocky surface like the Earth.

    PEOPLE

    Your CommunicationYour Responsibility

The ability to communicate effectively is one of the

most underrated skills in the world. Thats because

most of us think that as long as we can speak or

write well, we are good at communication. Well,

nothing could be further from the truth - just

because one is eloquent or expressive does not

    make one a good communicator.

Being a skilled communicator is not about how well

you speak; rather, it is about whether your message

is received by the listener the way you want him/her

    to understand it.

In every interaction between two people, there are

two perspectives. There is what one party intends to

communicate and there is what the other party

actually understands or receives. It is the latter

perspective that defines if your communication has

achieved the desired result. Many of the problems

that arise in communication occur because people

think that a message delivered is a message

    received.

    One of the fundamental

    presuppositions propounded

    universally by experts states

that the meaning of your communication is the

response you get. Simply put, this means the

communication process does not stop once the

message is sent. It is only complete

    (and successful) once the

    recipient has understood

    the message the way the

    sender intended it.

    The responsibility for

    getting the message

    across therefore lies with

    the communicator, just as

    the responsibility for

    ensuring the audience gets

the right news lies with the radio

stations ability to transmit at the right

    frequency.

If we sincerely wish to ensure that we are

    communicating efficiently, we need to

accept that the meaning of our

communication is not what we think it

means, but rather, what the other

person thinks it means. Asking How

can I communicate in a way that they will

get what I want to say? is

    what sets great communicators

    apart from the rest.

One of the key ways of improving

communication is to be able to connect

verbally in the preferred communication style

of the other person. We all take in information

through our five senses visual, auditory,

    kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory.

The visual sense is the one that sees things, while

auditory is the sense of hearing. The kinesthetic

sense feels, gustatory is the sense of taste

and olfactory is the sense of smell.

Each of us tends to favour one

sense over the others when it

    comes to processing

    information from the world

    around us and expressing

    ourselves.

    An important clue to identifying

    a persons preferred

    communication style lies in the

words he or she uses, known as

predicates. A visual person tends to use

a lot of visual predicates in the

conversation. If you hear someone say

I can see where youre coming from or I

hope you have a clearer picture of the

situation, he is likely to have a visual

    representational system. Sprinkling ones own

conversation with visual predicates will help

one to connect better with such a person.

    In the same way, auditory

    predicates help us to connect

    better with auditory,

    or hearing types and

    kinesthetic predicates

    with kinesthetic, or

    the feeling types.

Aside from verbal communication, we also need to

pay attention to our non-verbal signals. You may be

saying something rational to another person, but

what tonality are you using, and how is your

physiology? If your facial expression is interpreted by

the other party as being condescending, they are

going to shut themselves off from your message, no

matter how sensible or useful it is.

    To manage our

    communication and get the

    desired response from our

    listeners, we need to take

    responsibility for managing

    our physiology and tonality,

as well as the words we use.

    This means if someone does

    not understand what you mean

(dont blame them for it), you work at

finding a way to communicate with them to

    ensure that they do.

If you think, this is difficult, well it may be but as you

know Practice Makes Perfect. If we decide to take

charge of ensuring that our communication is

effective, then assuming full responsibility for the

communication is vital. It will turn you into a great

communicator who gets the desired outcomes from

your relationships ... isnt that worth it.

In this HOTS issue Sheila Singam, a former teacher turned trainer, delves into the issue of communication and why people should take the responsibility for this important aspect of life and not leave it to the recipient to be accountable for it.

  • The circle map is a great tool to help you brainstorm and list everything you know about a topic. It is a good way to begin exploring a subject to generate ideas for discussion. It is designed for defining a word or concept based on the context of the current investigation and study and prior knowledge about the concept.

The circle map comprises a small inner circle and a larger outer circle. The inner circle contains the word or concept you want to understand or define. Once you have that, in the larger outer circle, draw or write the words that help define the word in the inner circle, or write what you think the word means. These words will become the basis upon which you develop the study of the topic or the essay you want to write about.

    Here is an example:

Lets say you want to write an essay on the topic Food. You put the word Food in the inner circle.

Next, you write down in the outer circle all the words and ideas that come into your mind when you see the word Food.

For example, if the context is a secondary school science class, the words you may put in could be: protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, energy, food pyramid etc.

If the context is a primary school class on Malaysian food, you could write the words: nasi lemak, roti canai, ais kacang and so on. Finally, you add a square frame outside the larger circle - this becomes your frame of reference and represents the sources from which you got your ideas.

The example on the right illustrates this:

    RevisitingBubble Maps

    Examples of Bubble Maps

The Bubble Map is a great tool for helping you to list down key adjectives (qualities, properties and attributes) that describe a particular topic or concept so it can be understood better. It is designed for describing using adjectives. It helps in identifying the sensory, logical and emotional qualities of any topic or concept.

The first step is to construct an inner circle and write the word or topic being described.

Then, draw several outer circles extending from the inner circle like the spokes of a wheel and fill in these circles with the adjectives that describe the word in the inner circle. The number of circles on either side can vary. These descriptors can come from sensory qualities using the five senses (what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell). They can also be emotional or aesthetic qualities as well value-based words such as the characteristics that descibe a person loyal, helpful, strong and so on. You can also apply the Frame of Reference to the Bubble Map. Here is an example of a Bubble Map generated from the orange fruit.

The Bubble Map is useful for the following disciplines1. Character analysis of people2. Identifying the properties of things under study in science3. Vocabulary development and others
