Geography

The diversity of Oman, from the lush plains of Dhofar to the arid eastern sands, endows it with unparalleled beauty. Situated in the extreme South Eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman lies on the Tropic of Cancer, extending from latitude 16.40 to 26.20 degrees North and longitude 51.50 to 59.40 degrees East. The country’s 3,165km coastline runs from the Arabian Sea at the entrance to the Indian Ocean in the far South West, to Musandam and the Sea of Oman in the North, where it overlooks the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the entrance to the Gulf.

The geographical diversity of the sultanate is best observed by using the country’s modern network of multi-lane highways. The impressive Hajar mountain range runs in a great arc from Ru’us al Jibal in the North West of the country, to Ras al Hadd in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, overlooking the Indian Ocean.

In emergencyOman has several private hospitals and clinics that are accessible to tourists. These are clean and well-staffed. If you have a medical emergency in Oman, you can turn up at the emergency department of any of the private hospitals for immediate care. You may be transferred to one of the government hospitals for specialist treatment based on the seriousness of the ailment.

Health requirementsNo health certificates are required for visitors to Oman, except for people who have recently been in a yellow fever-infected area. However, it is always wise to check with an Oman diplomatic mission or your travel agent before departure as health restrictions may change.

As of 2001, the World Health Organisation declared Oman malaria-free and taking preventive medication is no longer required. Rabies has not been eradicated in Oman, so if you

are bitten, you should seek medical attention immediately. Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, and typhoid, are recommended.

Oman’s climate can be harsh, particularly in summer. Drink plenty of water and cover up when out in the sun.

People with disabilitiesMost of Oman’s hotels have wheelchair access and toilet facilities for people with special needs. There are reserved parking spaces for the physically challenged, and drivers leave these vacant as the police carry out regular inspections.

Entry visa and travel insuranceA passport valid for at least six months is required for all visitors, except nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia who hold national identity cards, and holders of a Macau (SAR) Travel Permit. Visa permits have been greatly simplified as the country welcomes increased tourism. However, regulations should always be checked with your Oman embassy or consulate before travelling, especially if you plan to get a visa on arrival. Refer to the website of the Royal Oman Police (www.rop.gov.om) to get latest information on tourist visas.

Overseas travel can be an unforgettable experience. However, without proper travel insurance, the dream holiday you had been planning for months could quickly turn into a nightmare. Arranging travel insurance is not too expensive, nor does it require a lot of your time. Choose a reputable insurer and explore the various policies that they have on offer. There will always be a plan or policy that best suits your particular needs. Also make sure you read the fine print in the policy document, as there might be certain costs that the policy might not cover.

Most countries are family-friendly, and so is Oman. Children will have a great time. There are quite a few parks and amusement centres for activities. However, make sure to visit the parks in the evening, as it is quite hot during the day. Children can also enjoy swimming. For those with a passion for nature and adventure, go camping and explore Oman’s many wadis, beaches and mountains.

One of the constants in Oman is the annual Muscat Festival that takes place in January. It offers all sorts of fun-filled activities for the whole family. Hotels and shopping malls are also children-friendly, offering babysitting services and even small play centres. Restaurants in Oman have children’s menus. However, if you require a high chair, make sure to check with the individual restaurants.

The Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) operates the state’s bus services between Dubai in UAE and Oman. Dubai is located approximately 450km from Muscat and it takes about four and a half hours to travel by road. Several private buses also travel within these two destinations. Other than this the ONTC also has regular bus services within Oman, to Salalah, Nizwa, Sohar and other towns.

Travelling between destinations within Oman can be a comfort in rented cars. There are several agencies providing ‘rent-a-car’ services. Oman is a fantastic destination for anyone who has never self-driven abroad before. It is safe thanks to an excellent road system. Hotels are easy to find and fuel is readily obtainable and unbelievably cheap.

Off-road driving through the desert terrains is as much fun. The deep sand is challenging and consequently it is imperative to be accompanied by a local guide since navigation is difficult even with a GPS.

Must visit

This reserve is about 40 minutes by boat from Bandar al Rawdha Marina, located in the heart of Muscat. The ride is enjoyable with dolphins prancing along the boat. As a visitor, you will enjoy the rocky mountains and the white-washed small houses that overlook the sea. Coral reefs permeate the Bandar al Khayran waters. The reserve is home to many diverse organisms and a variety of marine life. The place is abuzz with divers, especially with the presence of more than 22 diving locations, each with its own charm and beauty.

Muttrah Corniche depicts the chronicle of Oman since 1970. It maintains pace with the current development, yet holds its quaintness. It stretches for about 3km along the Muscat harbour. Pristine gardens and water fountains along this stretch form an ideal walkway. At the northern end of the corniche are the fish market and the dhow harbour. Next to the fish market is the fruit and vegetable market, an interesting place to hone your bargaining skills for fresh, local produce. Along the corniche is the souq, a must-visit for tourists keen on the culture of the land. This is also the best place to buy souvenirs. The corniche abounds in eateries to sample local as well as international fare.

After having an architectural competition to select the best design for Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, construction took six years. Inscribed on the doors are Islamic embellishments topped by Quranic verses in the Thuluth script, while other doors have stained glass panels to emphasise the harmony and unity of the space dedicated to prayer. The selection of artwork in the halls reflects the evolution of architectural decoration and the culture that has spread from Andalusia to China. Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque every day, except Friday, from 8.30am until 11am. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and in a way befitting places of worship.

Scuba-divingOman is one of the most popular diving destinations in the region. It has a diverse marine life and a number of marine cliffs, small islands, bays and caves, and coral reefs. The best months for diving in Oman are from April to July. The most prominent diving areas around the capital are Bandar al Khayran, Al Fahil island, Dimaniyat islands, Al Makbara bay (old Muscat), in addition to Al Jissah beach. Each of these locations contains at least 11 different diving sites with a diverse environment.

CruisesCruises in Oman are an inseparable part of its history. Cruises abound from many beaches and cities. There are specialised centres such as Marina Bandar al Rawda in Muscat. Many tour operators organise cruises from Muscat.

The trips involve watching dolphins, or a sunset cruise in a traditional dhow with Omani hospitality.

There is barely a beach in Oman that does not organise such trips.

Geological toursIn Oman, geological stories can be found everywhere. Some of these are presented on a dramatic scale such as in the massive folding and faulting that can be seen on parts of Oman’s 700km long mountain

range, or the huge piles of pillow lava in Wadi aI Jizzi which is evidence of underwater volcanoes releasing magma to be rapidly cooled deep inside the ocean floor.

Bowshar and Al KhoudThe Bowshar and Al Khoud geo-tour is a convenient day trip to explore the hinterland of the capital area. This tour provides a contrast between the vibrant city and the calm interior. The drive through the Muscat Expressway captures beautiful limestone landscapes.

Wadi MayhThe tour of the geological attractions in Wadi Mayh is a convenient half day trip from Muscat. A round trip can be taken by approaching the wadi from the South West via the Qurriyat road and taking the Al Bustan exit.

Al Jabal Aswad and Wadi MijlasA full day is required to enjoy the features of Jabal Aswad and Wadi Mijlas. This geo-tour offers opportunities to explore the beautiful and diverse landscapes to the South East of Muscat. A stop-over in the city of Qurriyat is a great way to end the day.

TrekkingTrekking season runs from September to May, but the best time is between October and April. Despite the rough terrain, trekking remains the best way to enjoy the sultanate’s wonderful mountain ranges. Different excursions with varying degrees of difficulty are available for experts as well as enthusiasts. Tour operators in the capital provide comprehensive tours which include trekking opportunities.

CampingIf you want to break away from the routine of city life with its pampered lifestyle, you can go camping. The diverse environment of Oman allows many options when it comes to camping. Within Muscat Governorate camping can be enjoyed on Shatti Qantab and Bandar al Khayran Reserve. In addition to the camps created for tourists in each of these areas, visitors are allowed to pitch their own tents.

Oman offers a wide variety of dining experiences. The listing will give you a fair idea on the variety of cuisines available in Muscat. Fantastic buffets, amazing Arabic street food, vegetarian food as well as multi-cultural theme nights are some of the options to look out for when travelling in the city.

Roadside stands throughout the city sell shawarma, rolled pita bread with lamb, chicken or beef filling carved from a rotating spit. These are inexpensive, and offer an excellent alternative to the usual fast food that is available.

Muscat is the shopping capital of Oman and offers a wide range of shops from expensive boutiques to handicraft stalls. The fact that goods are tax-free means that items like carpets, textiles and gold are often cheaper than in other countries. Oman has some of the liveliest traditional markets (souqs) selling souvenirs, frankincense and local spices. Modern shopping centres replete with international brands and ample parking also dot the capital. Weekends are the busiest shopping times and during Ramadan some shops are open until midnight. International credit cards are widely accepted by established retailers.

Golf in Muscat, so far, had enthusiasts playing on ‘brown’ (sand) courses. Green courses are coming up in the city with Muscat’s first green golf course, the Muscat Golf & Country Club, now open to players. The unique 18-hole tournament-grade course has been designed by top golf course designer David Thomas to challenge the best golfers in the world. The completion of Oman’s first green golf course is hoped to boost the country’s tourism sector, and put the sultanate on the golfing world map.

There are several golf tournaments on Oman’s annual calendar, such as the Oman Ladies’ Open Championship, the Men’s Oman National Championship and the Ras al Ghala Trophy. Among the golf courses worth a mention in this country is Al Maha Golf Course, Almouj Golf and Ghala Golf Club.

Those who have never played golf in the Middle East should be warned that the game here can be more physically demanding than elsewhere in the world - even acclimatised golfers avoid playing in the heat of the day during the summer.

Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club is a truly unique golf development, comprising an 18-hole championship green golf course and a high quality residential development on the outskirts of Muscat. Located between the mountains and the sea, the club is only five minutes’ drive from the Muscat International Airport and 15 minutes from the city centre. Paul Thomas of David Thomas Associates designed the course to complement the natural features, where the lush green fairways and greens provide a startling contrast to the rugged desert terrain.

The 18-hole, par 72, Muscat Hills Golf Course is the first green golf course in Oman. It offers unique golfing experience for golfers in all abilities.

Since its opening in 2009, this has been a preferred place to meeting a broad cross section of the community, both in business and social circles, and offers to all golfers a

full calendar of club fixtures. The expansive floodlit driving range with covered bays from both sides and the excellent pitch and putt area give you the chance to warm up before you play. They are perfect for practice in the shade or in the evenings. The comfortable clubhouse and terrace is ideal to enjoy refreshments throughout the day. The fully stocked golf shop has equipment and apparel from leading brands. The club’s golf carts all have GPS, giving you detailed information of exact yardages to hazards and to the flag.

Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club offers lucrative ‘stay and play packages’ for tourists in conjunction with the best hotel chains in Oman.

Designed by Greg Norman, the course at Almouj Golf provides a challenging 18 holes of varying lengths and configurations. The essence of the surrounding environment has been beautifully captured and enhanced to produce a links style course that runs alongside over two kilometres of beach. The course highlights include a daunting Par 3 island green and a challenging Par 5 that stretches for over 549m. The breathtaking views of the Sea of Oman and the Hajar Mountains are visible from everywhere on the course.

Located in The Wave, Muscat, Almouj Golf is also home to a golf academy with a state-of-the-art swing studio, driving range and private golf lesson area. Almouj hosts the first golf academy in Muscat that has been designed to offer unrivalled levels of world-class golf tuition for all ages and all backgrounds. With a dedicated 9-hole Par 3 floodlit course, state-of-the-art swing studio and an extensive driving range offering dedicated private tuition bays, the academy at Almouj caters to both complete beginners as well as more experienced players.

Dining facilities are available and offer true Omani hospitality, welcoming all guests, irrespective of golfing prowess.

Must visit

Nakhal Fort is one of the most prominent historical monuments in the sultanate. The fort lies amidst palm orchards in Al Batinah South Governorate. It rises above a rocky hill at the base of mount Nakhal to the Northeast of Al Jabal al Akhdar.

The fort, also called Husn al Heem, lies 120km from the capital. This fort’s architecture does not follow a

particular pattern, as it was designed around an irregularly shaped rock. The construction of the castle dates back to the pre-Islamic era.

This traditional village is located between the mountains of Al Dakhiliyah and Al Batinah governorates. Balad Sayt lies 40km away from Wilayat Rustaq. The beauty of this village lies in its agricultural terraces and mountainous location. The rugged mountain roads attract tourists looking for adventure. Balad Sayt is considered a fine example of traditional Omani villages.

North and South al Batinah Governorate is the area formed by the valleys descending from the mountains. Rustaq is the provincial centre of the South al Batinah Governorate and Sohar city is the provincial centre of the North al Batinah Governorate.

The wilayats of North al Batinah Governorate include Sohar, A’ Suwaiyq, Al Kabura, Saham, Liwa and Shinas. The South al Batinah Governorate wilayats are Barka, Wadi al Mawil, Nakhal, Al Awabi, Rustaq and Mussanah.

Built in Wilayat Rustaq in Al Batinah South Governorate, the Rustaq souq is one of the most popular markets in the sultanate. From the early hours of the morning, this market becomes a hub of activity where various goods are traded, such as traditional spices, palm leaf artefacts, folk remedies and various agricultural crops. This is also a wonderful place to see local craftsmen at work. The courtyard of this souq sells livestock.

This beach is located in Barka in Al Batinah South Governorate. It lies 70km from Muscat. Beautiful rock islands are scattered close to the coast of this beach. These islands are an important spot for both migratory and indigenous birds. A number of aquatic sports can be enjoyed on this beach, which has a resort equipped with all the necessities for such activities.

Explore bull fightingThe main reason for visiting Barka, 80km west of Muscat in Al Batinah Governorate, is to see bull fighting. This is where great brahmin bulls, specially raised by local farmers, are set nose-to-nose in a fight that supposedly hurts neither party. Bull fighting rotates from village to village along the Batinah coast on selected weekends. Ask locally to find out when and where, or chance your luck on a Friday between November and March from 4pm to 6pm. There’s no admission charge.

Camp in Dimaniyat IslandsCamping in Dimaniyat Islands in Al Batinah South Governorate is an enriching experience. In 1984, the reserve was recognised internationally as it is located within the project of the Great Barrier Reef. It is considered an international nature reserve and is one of the most beautiful diving locations in the Sea of Oman. The reserve consists of nine islands. These islands are important for the protection of many species including nesting turtles, migratory birds and the diverse marine life which reside in the coral reefs. Crystal clear waters and pure sands add to the beauty of these islands.

Visit Bat, Al Khutm and Al Ayn The prehistoric site of Bat lies near a palm grove in the Batinah Governorate of the Sultanate of Oman. Together with the neighbouring sites, it forms the most complete collection of settlements and necropolises from the third millennium

BC in the world. A visit to these sites is a must for the traveller interested in ancient history.

Explore Sohar CastleSohar Castle is perhaps the most famous feature of the city, which is the capital of the Al Batinah Governorate. It was built after Imam Nasser bin Murshid al Ya’arubi conquered the Portuguese and expelled them from the castle. It was then used as an administration centre for the rulers of the dynasty. This fascinating castle is home to a museum that visitors will want to explore while they tour the castle. The castle is also considered a historical monument of Sohar, and it is worth a visit while you are in the region.

Watch racing camelsJust outside Sohar, the small villages still entertain themselves and their guests in traditional ways. One of the must do’s for tourists visiting the desert is to enjoy a traditional camel race. This local sport is not advertised, so tourists should hire a guide to find out when a camel race will occur. The racers, who dress in traditional clothes, are a

joy to watch, and the large number of spectators adds to the excitement.

Shopping in Al HujraTo get a feel of the local culture and shopping habits, visit the street-side market in Al Hujra. This market dwells among the mega malls and shopping centres in Sohar. This is a typical Middle Eastern market known for its traditional offerings. You can buy souvenirs here. There are several shops that sell sheeshas, the traditional smoking pot. The chicken roll of shawarma sold on this street is a true treat.

The name ‘Snake Canyon’ refers to the serpentine effect created by the water cutting through the mountains and the wadi snaking through. By far the most diverse and challenging of wadis, the depth of the crystal pools range from two to six metres. The caverns add fun and challenge to the trek. You need to be fit and an able swimmer to enjoy what this canyon offers.

The capital, Khasab, is a quaint fishing port largely unchanged by the modern world. The main attraction of this town is the Khasab Fort. The fort’s impressive setting dominates the coastline near the older part of town. Khasab Fort is a picturesque stronghold situated on the inner cove of Khasab Bay in the Wilayat of Khasab. Contained within its low, crenelated wall is a massive central tower that pre-dates the castle itself and preceded the arrival of Portuguese in the 16th century. This architectural excellence was restored by the Ministry of National Heritage and Culture in 1990. In close proximity to the Khasab Fort, you will find several other forts and towers, which are also worth visiting.

Khasab Fort

At the southern end of Musandam, straddling the border with the UAE, lies Dibba, a small town made up of three fishing villages. Each part comes under a different jurisdiction: Dibba Bayah is in Oman, Dibba al Hisn belongs to Sharjah, and Dibba Muhallab is part of Fujairah. The three villages share an attractive bay, fishing communities, and excellent diving locations. Dhow cruises can be arranged from each of these villages to take you to unspoilt dive sites along the remote eastern coast of the Musandam Peninsula. The Hajar range provides a wonderful backdrop. There is a good public beach abounding in beautiful shells.

Take a driveThere is a highway running the length of the Western part of the peninsula. Take a drive through it to see the scenic mountains on one side and the beautiful sea and fjords on the other.

Take a cruiseHire a dhow and cruise along the Northern end of the peninsula to view the splendid fjords from the best

possible angle. Also, keep an eye out for dolphins that are attracted to the dhows. The dhows offer a leisurely way of exploring the fjords.

Go snorkellingTake your snorkelling gear along and snorkel

off the cruise boats to see the great underwater treasures of this

peninsula. There is nothing compared to the beauty of the

serene waters in this area. Visitors can discover the rich ecology of the region and view its spectacular marine life.

DivingYou can also take your diving

Bird watchingOman witnesses huge swarms of migratory birds during their seasonal journey between their nesting habitats and the places where they spend winters, especially those birds migrating from Europe and East Asia. Many birds, especially water fowl, migrate from faraway regions like northern

Siberia, and travel about 5,000km. Many of these birds travel through Musandam.

79

Must visitAl Buraimi Governorate is a semi-desert plain descending from the southern slopes of the western Al Hajar Mountains. Ruins discovered in this governorate indicate the existence of trade routes dating back to ancient times. The presence of pottery and the remains of copper and other ruins in Al Buraimi indicate the existence of an ancient civilisation.

There is an extensive falaj system that keeps the region fertile. Buraimi is an oasis and therefore is pleasantly green with plenty of date plantations. It also benefits from a cooler, less humid climate than coastal regions.

This is an old settlement dating back to the third millennium BC. This site was a meeting place for trade caravans between the Bat civilisation in the Wilayat of Ibri, and the Um AnNar civilisation. Tombs in this region date to the third millennium BC and are built like the bee hive tombs of the Bat civilisation.

Hafeet Site This castle is located in Wilayat Al Buraimi in the Buraimi Governorate. It is considered one of the important monuments of this region. This castle is named after the presence of a large trench surrounding it on all sides. Al Khandaq Castle is fortified with roadblocks and combines civilian and defence purposes. In Oman, it is the best known example of a fortress surrounded by a trench. The castle consists of ten rooms of varied purposes spread over its area. It also includes four towers situated in its four corners. The Governorate of Al Buraimi takes Al Khandaq Castle as its emblem.

Another major attraction is the Al Hillah Fort which has been recently restored and refurbished. The list of forts goes on to include Al Fayyadh, Hafeet and Wadi al Jizzi. The areas in and around Buraimi are rich in vegetation and natural beauty. There are many mountain ranges in this governorate for the tourist to enjoy trekking and hiking. The famous ‘Hanging gardens’ and ‘Devil’s chimney’, though gruelling, are ideal trekking terrain.

An interesting activity is to search out Fossil Valley to the East of Buraimi, a vast open area which millions of years ago was covered with water. Surrounded by a rocky plain, the valley houses the fossilised remains of numerous prehistoric creatures such as shells and starfish.

Dhahirah Governorate descends from the southern slopes of the western Hajar Mountains. It forms a bridge to the caravan trade routes between Oman and the neighbouring countries.

Al Kittan Cave is located in Wilayat Ibri. The cave’s uniqueness lies in its extreme luminosity that looks like marble. This has earned it the name of the marble cave. Al Kittan Cave houses beautiful geological formations and rock engravings. It has a circular entrance with a radius of just 1m. This is one of the oldest caves and it has several chambers made from recrystallised limestone.

Al Hoota Cave is one of nature’s spectacular highlights in the Sultanate of Oman. The cave features an electrical train that starts from the visitor centre, travels through the mouth of the tunnel and reaches the cave’s main entrance.

A well-lit walkway runs alongside the cave wall and it throws light on the natural formations curving the walls of the cave.

Al Hoota Cave Nizwa Fort is one of the oldest forts in Oman. The fort, which took 12 years to build, is linked with a castle by means of intricate corridors. This fort has seven wells and multiple openings for stationing the fighters defending the fort. Nizwa Fort was built by Imam Sultan bin Saif al Y’aribi in the middle of the seventeenth century. Hailed as a monument to Omani architectural ingenuity, the fort reflects the military engineering prowess of fort-builders of a bygone time.

This is an ancient rock which has inscriptions dating back to the dawn of history. This rock is reminiscent of the rosetta stone which was discovered in Egypt. It is a six-metre-high block of massive limestone. The block is carved, in relief, with four life-size human figures on its main face. Hasat bin Salt is located in one of the most beautiful tourist areas in Wilayat Al Hamra.

Misfat al Abriyeen village is located in Wilayat Al Hamra. It is characterised by its alleys, traditional mud-brick houses and agricultural terraces that wrap around the mountain. This village rises a 1,000m above sea level. The paths through the village are very narrow and lead you through arches and along the falaj system to the inhabitants’ irrigated terraces. The water comes from the mountains several kilometres away.

The city of Bahla hosts a souq that has maintained its activity and unique architectural style. It consists of a number of closely built shops in rows with wooden roofed alleys in between. It contains several traditional handicrafts still pursued by the local community, like smithery and weaving. Quaint shops selling spices, pulses and silver artefacts add a certain charm.

Jabal Shams

Jabal Shams is so called because it is the first place to greet sunlight at dawn and the last to say farewell at dusk. This is the highest peak in the Arabian Peninsula, rising to an altitude of 3,000m above sea level. Close to the peak lies a deep chasm called the Nakhr Balcony. A deep ravine in the heart of the rocks can be viewed from this point.

Mountain climbingOmani mountains with their towering heights, rocky and steep slopes and rugged tracks constitute a challenge for any mountaineer. In Oman, there are several climbing areas and their diversity corresponds to the climber’s skill, as there are paved paths for beginners and the very rugged for the more experienced climber. Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams are two summits that you can enjoy climbing.

CampingCamping overnight in Jabal Shams is a memorable experience. Other spots to camp within this governorate include the Grand Canyon and the lush terraces of Jabal Akhdar.

ShoppingThe region abounds in traditional souqs. The city of Nizwa and Bahla are famous for their craftsmanship and the souqs that sell these as souveneirs. The Nizwa souq lies in the vicinity of the walls of the famous Nizwa Fort. Through its many alleys and divisions, the souq has remained, for more than a century, home to a number of local industries, such as khanjars, copper, spinning, livestock sale, fish, vegetables and handicrafts.

Via FerrataFrom the Italian phrase meaning ‘Iron Way’, via ferrata are mountain routes with fixed wire cables, metal rungs and ladders. These allow climbers to ascend steep rock faces in relative safety. Those trying the sport for the first time should start under the supervision of a professionally trained guide. For experienced climbers it is best to go with someone who knows the way. Check on the status of the route before setting off. This governorate has the Grand Canyon as a via ferrata track (VF1). A trek along the village of Al Khitaym and a high-level balcony walk to the abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis takes an hour and has stunning views of the Grand Canyon.

The island is located in South East Oman, and is within the administration of the Sharqiyah South Governorate. The island has a beautiful and diverse natural environment with an abundant marine life. It enjoys temperate weather all year round. The beaches provide an opportunity to see clusters of rare sea turtles laying their eggs. You can reach the island by a large ferry, known locally

as Alyasoora. This is a large carrier that carries cars, goods and people to and from the island. The island can also be accessed by air.

This governorate abounds in spectacular wadis. Wadi Tiwi, Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid are definitely worth visiting. The wadis form a unique environmental system characterised by variety, diversity, and a wealth of natural attractions.

Masirah Island

Wadis

The nature of this region blends three environments, each having its own distinctive flavour: the coastline, hugging the Arabian Sea and part of the Sea of Oman, the sand dunes, vibrant with the quiet nomadic life in a pastoral setting, and the towns which are the meeting point for both the nomadic and coastal environments.

This nature reserve lies 57km from the Wilayat of Sur. It extends over an area of 220sqkm, and is predominantly covered by forests of acacia trees. It is home to a number of rare species such as the Arabian gazelle, the Omani wild cat, and other animals which have made this environment their home, including the red fox and the Egyptian eagle.

A’ Saleel Nature Park

Sharqiyah Sands are considered among the most beautiful camping areas in the sultanate and extend over an area of about 10,000sqkm. The sand colour ranges from red to brown as far as the eye can see. It is the original homeland of the bedouins. This area attracts many desert adventure fans, and is preferred by visitors owing to its ease of accessibility and availability of nearby services.

Watch turtlesThe beaches extending from Ras al Hadd to Masirah Island in the Al Sharqiyah South Governorate are considered a turtle reserve. Apart from the turtle breeding season (which extends throughout the year in varying degrees), you can enjoy the beauty of the beach and view the magnificent tracks left by the turtles. A scientific centre has been established containing illustrative displays of the turtles laying their eggs. The reserve is 65km east of Sur city.

Enjoy the bedouin way of lifeThe desert of the Sharqiyah Governorate can keep a visitor occupied for days. Home to the bedouins, this region offers the visitor a glimpse of a traditional way of life that is fast disappearing as modern conveniences limit the need for a nomadic existence. For the casual visitor, the

best way to explore the sands is by staying at one of the desert camps. The owners of the camp will meet

you at the Muscat–Sur Highway, and guide you, usually in convoys, across the sands.

Spend a day in SurSur is a placid coastal town, which has

played an important role in overseas trade with East Africa. The city is situated on a large

lagoon, which is used today as a natural port.

Sur is famous for its dhow yard where traditional

fishing vessels such as dhows and sambuks are built.

Hike through the wadis of SharqiyahA fun way to explore the wadis is to hike through them across waterfalls

and lush oases. The palm groves and pools of fresh water make for

interesting picnic spots.

Visit the castlesThis governorate has quite a few castles that are worth visiting. Al Mintarib Castle, As Sunaysilah Castle, Bilad Sur Castle and the Ras al Hadd Castle were all bastions protecting the nearby wilayats. Most of these castles have been restored and are now open to visitors.

Barr al Hikman is located in the centre of Oman’s east coast, in Al Wusta Governorate. This island is considered one of the most important bird migration stations both in Oman and Southeast Asia. Many birds congregate here, especially water birds from as far as Siberia’s northern shores. In addition to being a sanctuary for birds and fish of all kinds, the existence of coral reefs off its shores make it a favourite destination for divers.

Barr al Hikman

Pink Lagoons

Located in the central part of this governorate, the Pink Lagoons are completely cut off from the sea and are very saline. The salinity encourages a particular type of algae to bloom, giving the water a deep pink hue. There are thick red and white salt crusts around the edge which fishermen use for drying fish.

Rock Garden

The Rock Garden in Duqm is a 3sqkm area of limestone and sandstone rocks which formed in an underground freshwater aquifer over 46mn years ago. With time it has been shaped by wind, water, frost and other natural forces. It is a must-visit for tourists headed this way.

Located between the central desert and the coastal mountains of this governorate, seasonal fog and dew deposits play a role in the formation of the desert environment. It also allows the growth of some indigenous plants which support the Arabian Oryx. The sanctuary’s rare fauna includes the first free-ranging herd of Arabian Oryx since the global extinction of the species in the wild in 1972 and its reintroduction here in 1982. The only wild breeding sites in Arabia of the endangered houbara bustard, a species of wader, are also to be found here, along with Nubian ibex, Arabian wolves, honey badgers, caracals and the largest wild population of Arabian gazelle.

Whale watchingWhales visit the shores of the sultanate at irregular intervals. They can be particularly spotted off the Al Wusta shores. Trips are organised by many tour agencies to watch dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. These trips are normally carried out in the early mornings or during the sunset using well-equipped Omani fishing boats.

Enjoy the beaches Al Wusta is characterised by a series of beaches varying in

nature and topography. Some are surrounded by rocks that look like carved natural awnings, especially in Duqm, while others are clean, sandy beaches like the shores of Al Jasir and Mahut. The beaches enjoy mild weather that often blows cool breezes accompanied by a light water spray which gives them their distinctive atmosphere.

Things to do

Bird watchingAl Wusta offers a unique opportunity to watch birds from Europe, Africa and Asia. During their annual migrations in spring and autumn, millions of birds pass across the country and through this governorate. SAFEER RESIDENCE SALALAH SAMAHRAM TOURIST VILLAGE

These villas are conveniently situated in the heart of the city, only a two-minute drive away from a number of shops and restaurants, and a five-minute drive from Mugsail beach. There are also a variety of local attractions such as the Mausoleum of Nabi Ayub and Nabi Imran, the Salalah Market, nearby traditional villages in the beautiful surrounding mountains and amongst others, an archaeological park. With breakfast excluded, the seven villas with three well-furnished bedrooms are priced at RO100 each. In khareef season the rates increase to RO150. Enjoy 24-hour housekeeping while you relax. City tours are available on request.

Surrounded by coconut palms, with the nearby beach and main shopping centres a 20-minute drive away, this hotel is the perfect place to relax and unwind. There are many local tourist attractions to enjoy around the area, or you can just stay put and indulge in a therapeutic ayurvedic massage. Room rates are seasonal.

You can choose from a wide range of international cuisine in the buffet breakfast, as well as the à la carte lunch and dinner.
