The hotel’s clients are predominately business people, who are holding and attending local, national or international meetings or training events. Ease of functionality was a key objective. The hotel wanted clients to be able to just plug in their laptops and connect to the technology without fuss or to video conference across the world without wasting time. Access to all functionality was to be at the touch of a screen – along with control of the room environment including temperature, blinds and lighting. Reflex was chosen as the integrator because Hotel La Tour needed a company they could rely on that could work alongside a main construction contractor, and who could deliver quality systems to a high standard within a luxurious hotel. The Solution The installation involved fitting out four conference rooms, four meeting rooms, a bespoke video conferencing suite as well as a bar, café and breakout area. Systems throughout are AMX controlled. This allows large rooms to be split into two and have independent functionality. AMX touch panels in each room mean the presenter can control the equipment and environment from one place. By using similar equipment in each room, presenters who are using more than one room are familiar with the controls. Within the conference room, Christie LWU505 projectors and ceiling recesses screens are installed. The professional audio system includes lapel and hand held microphones plus Ecler ceiling speakers and amplifier for sound reinforcement.

Setting the standards in Audio Visual SolutionsImperial College London Installation Project

As you would expect from an organisation ranked as the world’s fifth best university in the 2007 Times Higher Educational Supplement, when Imperial College Londondecided to upgrade the audio visual facilities at their South Kensington Campus theirstandards were high.

Historically, the responsibility for providing and maintaining audio visual facilities hadrested with individual departments. In 2007 the College committed to undertake aproject for the refurbishment and subsequent service, maintenance and associatedservices of 38 lecture theatres spread across the College campuses with the goal ofestablishing College-wide standardisation of audio visual equipment with all the associated benefits including ease of use for lecturers and ease of support for theequipment.

AV Requirements

The key requirement for this project was to achieve standardised audio visual facilitiesin 38 lecture theatres across the South Kensington Campus whilst allowing some flexibility to tailor the exact specification to the needs of individual departments. For example some departments have chosen to add a second projector giving themthe ability to display different images side-by-side.

In terms of standard equipment, each of the lecture theatres was to be equipped with a projector displaying images from 2 residentPCs, DVD and visualiser onto a main screen. There was a requirement for a high quality audio system capable of transmitting sound from the input devices and from a lecturer’s microphone, routed through the existing induction-loop amplifier.

At the heart of the solution was a presentation lectern used to house all of the sourceequipment in a rack, whilst on top of the lectern there was a touch screen display usedto drive the Crestron room control system. The control system was designed to operate all of the source and display equipment and to integrate with the existing lighting control, electric blinds and screens.

To overcome security issues all equipment was fitted with Kensington locks, equipment racks were fastened with secure screws and projectors were housed inDalen security cages and fitted with Sonic Shock alarms.

Maintenance and Service Requirements

Having made a substantial investment in new audio visual facilities the College werevery keen to ensure they got the best out of their investment by having appropriatesupport in place.

For first level support, the College use their own staff. To assist them in their taskReflex have installed Crestron Roomview remote monitoring software.

The four smaller meeting rooms have LG 47” LCD displays mounted on the walls, and boundary layer microphones for induction loops.

The Video Conference Suite features a Polycom VC system, camera and two LG 47’ LCD displays. As well as providing a facility for internal use and business guests, these facilities are also hired out independently.

The breakout area features a similar LG 47” display upon which IPTV content is shown.

A central ‘communications’ room houses the racks holding the equipment for the entire hotel’s AV system, as there was not space for them in each area where the AV systemsreside. This resulted in a huge amount of cabling – almost10 miles of it.

One of the most innovative products installed was the C-Burn mu-sic library system with an Ecler audio set up. Designed for the leisure industry it allows the easy management of music within different areas of the hotel. The system is ultimately flexible, allowing different ‘moods’ and volume of music to be scheduled according to the time of day and location. The Bar and Gym have sub woofers for a more upbeat and energetic ambiance. Hotel La Tour receives 40 new music tracks a month, automaticallydownloaded.

Effective project management was essential on this development. The project manager was allocated to the project because of his experience in working alongside main contractors. He worked closely with the contractors on the build, providing detailed information including technical, mechanical and electrical drawings to ensure the project could be successfully delivered. He also ensured that AV teams were on site at the right time and co-ordinated with all other trades teams and with the IT Director at the hotel, Julie King.

Key considerations included the finish of the installed devices and the ease of use for the clients. Audio system performance was also very important.

The Results

According to Julie King, Hotel La Tour’s IT Director, “We were allocated a great project manager from Reflex who helped us decide on the final solution. The construction company changed the timelines for the build and Reflex was very accommodating with rescheduling engineers and meeting our new timescales.

The result is a fantastic state of the art meeting floor concept with the latest technologies, which really helps us sell the hotel.”
