1 Nandankanan ZoologicalPark

Mayur Bhawan, Saheed Nagar,Bhubaneswar, Odisha 751007, India

Also known as the Garden of the Gods,the Nandankanan Zoological ParkBhubaneshwar is located about 15km away from the city bounds ofBhubaneshwar. The place is home to about16000 animals from over 120 species. TheZoo is also well known for being India's firstZoo that is registered with the World

Association for Zoos and Aquariums and itslow death rate. Visiting the zoo is a magicalexperience, as this is one of the bestzoos  in the country, where you canobserve a massive and healthy variety ofanimals.

A part of the NandankananZoological Park is reserved for theprotection of rare and endangered animalslike the White Tigers, Black Panthers, theAsiatic Lions, the Macau and many otherbirds, reptiles and mammals. Separatesections  of the Zoo include anAquaria, a Reptile Park and an OrchidHouse. What's more, if you are impressedby all the creatures you spot here and wantto do something to contribute, you canactually adopt an animal and promote theZoo's operation. This unique programmewas started in 2008 to invite publicparticipation in financing the zoo.

2 Lingaraja Temple

Lingaraj Nagar, Old Town,Bhubaneswar, Orissa 751002, India

Dedicated to Harihara, a combination ofLord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, LingarajaTemple is the largest in Bhubaneshwar. It isbelieved that this temple was constructed inthe 11th century, by Jajati Keshari, aSomvanshi king. The temple also housessome essential Sanskrit scripts from the 6thand 7th centuries. Built in the traditionalKalinga style of architecture, the templecomprises of four main components: thevimana (the structure which contains thesanctum), the bhoga-mandapa (the hall ofofferings), the nata Mandira ( the festivalhall) and the jagamohana (the assemblyhall). The temple is mostly built with lateriteand sandstone and displays impressivecarvings of beast and man.This complex atLingaraja Temple comprises of 150 shrinesand is topped with a massive tower which isvery intricately sculpted. The LingarajaTemple is one of the few ancient temples inthe city which is still used for worshippingand observing a rigorous pattern of rituals.There are scores of other minor templesaround Lingaraja, but the 8th-century VaitalTemple deserves a special mention. Itcombines elements from tantric, Buddhistand Vedic traditions.

3 Chaunsath Yogini Temple

Hirapur Village, Bhubaneswar, India

One of the most important ChausanthYogini Temple from all over India, thistemple is situated in Hirapur, about 15 kmaway from Bhubaneshwar. Set in the middleof swaying fields, this circular temple issurrounded by a small garden, making it agreat place to relax. The basic templearchitecture depicts all the 64 yoginis withtheir vahana (vehicle) set atop a smallplatform about 2 feet high. Marvellous as itmay sound, each of these 64 yoginis aredepicted in breathtaking detail andaccuracy.

It is said that an idol of Lord Shiva was set inthe middle of this circular complex, whichwas later stolen and taken away. Thed placeis reverberating with a pious energy, so

4 Udaygiri Caves

A set of wondrous caves which are a rareexample of how man and nature can worktogether to create true beauty, UdaygiriCaves are one spectacular sight to behold.The caves are set atop the Udayagiri Hillockand are of religious and archaeologicalimportance today.

These caves are partly natural in origin andwere carved and inhabited by Jain monksduring the reign of King Kharavela.Consisting of about 18 caves in total,Udaygiri houses some brilliant carvings,specially so in Ranigumpha,Ganeshagumpha and Hathigumpha. While

the Ranigumpha houses some exquisitesculptures and intricate designs on rock,Ganeshgumpha and Hathigumpha areknown for the Brahmi inscriptions on themwhich date to the 2nd Century BC.

5 Dhauli Giri Hills

8 kms south of Bhubaneswar Centre,Bhubaneswar, Orissa, 751001, India

The famous site of the Kalinga Battle,Dhauli Giri Hills is now a place of utterpeace, housing a Shanti Stupa. The place ismainly known for King Ashoka's Rock Edicts,that contain his concerns about the welfareof the world as well his thoughts onBuddhism. It is commonly believed thatseeing the nearby Daya River turn red withthe blood of the killed soldiers during theKalinga battle, bought about the emperor'schange of heart  

Following this, Ashoka took up the task ofbuilding several chaityas, stupas and pillarsin and around the place to propagateBuddhism. Today, atop this small hillockstands the spectacular Peace Pagoda builtby Japan Buddha Sangha and the KalingaNippon Buddha Sangha.
