HOT POTATOES

- Write a brief unit plan explaining how this unit of work will be carried out (2 or 3 lessons at least)

Pre- IntermedIate lesson – rooms and furnIture

First class:

Activation (7 minutes): Students will revise the prepositions in, on and under which they already know. Teacher will split the class in two and read sentences aloud including prepositions and Students will have to draw them on the board. The group that is able to finish first gets a point.

Comprehension and clarification: (20 minutes) Teacher will ask Students to open their books on page 24. She will explain there is and there are, parts of the house and pieces of furniture with flashcards.

Application: (JCloze) (7 minutes) Doing this exercise, Students will see there is and there in context and will practice parts of the house and pieces of furniture, too. They will have to complete the exercise by looking at the images next to the sentences. If they cannot come up with the correct word, they can resort to the clues.

Reflection: (JMacth) (6 minutes) Teacher will show Students a poster of a bedroom for some minutes and then, she will put it aside. Students will have to remember what they saw some minutes ago and match the first half of the sentence with the other one, bearing in mind the difference between there is and there are.

Second class:

Activation: JCross (7 minutes) Students will practice the spelling of the pieces of furniture more in detail.

Comprehension and clarification: (19 minutes) Teacher will explain there isn’t and there aren’t and the rest of the prepositions (in front of, next to, behind and between)

Application: JQuiz: (8 minutes) Looking at the images, they will have to complete with the correct form of the verb to be. (Is, isn’t, are or aren’t).

Reflection: (6 minutes) Teacher will stick a poster on the board containing five sentences with there is, there isn’t, there are and there aren’t. Students will have some images in a box and they will have to arrange and stick them in the correct way next to the corresponding sentence to illustrate its meaning.

Third class:

Activation: (6 minutes) Teacher will read sentences aloud with there is, isn’t, are and aren’t and Students will have to stand up and put objects in different parts of the classroom, according to what they listen to.

Comprehension and clarification: (18 minutes) Teacher will explain the interrogative form of there is and there are and the possible answers.

Application: JMix: (12 minutes) T will give Students the picture of a room and small pictures of a sofa, a TV, a window, a cooker, a table, two pens, two telephones, two bookcases, three lamps and three bins. Students will paste the small pictures where they wish to in the room. Then, they will put the questions in order and according to what they did, they will answer them in their notebooks.

Reflection: (4 minutes) Teacher will paste a poster on the board with 4 questions and images next to them. Students will come to the front and match the question with the correct answer, taking into account what they see in the pictures.
