This presentation session explores the grief and loss of a family unit following brain injury and shows loved ones how to rebuild connections at a heart level.

naznin VirJi-BaBul “�Resculpting�the�brain�after�injury:�new�evidence�from�neuroimaging”

Cognitive impairments are the most common long-term challenges after TBI, however little is known about how such cognitive changes are related to changes in brain structure and function. In this presentation I will outline how a combination of new and current neuroimaging tools combined with targeted clinical and neuropsychological assessments are helping to develop a brain signature of TBI.

Launched in 2015 through the federally funded Network of Centres of Excellence program, AGE-WELL addresses a wide range of complex issues in technology and aging, including those with various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, through receptor-driven transdisciplinary research, training programs, partnerships, knowledge mobilization and the commercial development of technologies.

This presentation will provide an overview of key research projects and programs within AGE-WELL, and mechanism for becoming involved in the Network.

Their story is a powerful look at perseverance in the face of trauma, and a surprising exploration into what lies beyond our fragile identities.

Jason harPs, rPa & aiDan harPs TThis is one employer’s story of how hiring a person who suffered a TBI changed his work culture and his personal life. Jason Harps is Vice President of Operations of Bona Building and Management Co. Ltd. based in Ottawa. He will share how his work culture and his own personal views have been radically altered by one man, Justin McKenna. Justin is a person who lives with a brain injury and has been hired by Bona Building and Management. Change has happened on every level since hiring Justin, Jason will tell you. He will also tell you why Justin has changed their business and their family’s lives for the better. Aidan is Jason’s son and he will speak to you about how Justin became his friend and later when he himself suffered a serious concussion, how Justin was there to help him.

“��Fallen:�A�Musical�Journey�of�Trauma��and�Recovery.”

In 2008, professional musician Simon Paradis fell, severing his spinal cord, fracturing skull bones and suffering global trauma to the brain from an arterial bleed. A craniectomy was performed and he was put in an induced coma, the outcome of his injuries uncertain. With his guitar, Simon will musically accompany Kara as she narrates their story, outlining in this interactive and embodied presentation the critical role music played in Simon’s awakening.
