Tourism which is well worth promoting

Spain is Europe’s leading golf destination and the country which receives the second highest number of this type of tourist in the world. Despite the economic crisis, 64 new golf courses have been founded over the last few years and there are several projects

underway within the segment’s strongest regions, facts which demonstrate a clear commit-ment to continue competing with other destinations.

There is no doubting how important it is to promote this tourism product at a time when Spain is at risk of being left behind as a leading destination if it does not continue to offer its visitors quality, authenticity and exceptional service; three qualities which are perfectly suited to golf tourism.

Apart from its infrastructure, there is still a lot to be done as far as promoting and spreading awareness about the different autonomous regions as golf tourism destinations is concerned. This is made clear by the fact that one of Spain’s largest potential markets, the Unites States, does not yet identify the country with golf, something Turespaña hopes to change.

The information collected from some of the autonomous communities’ tourism authorities leaves no room for doubt: a segment whose average expenditure is between 70 and 202% higher than that of a conventional tourist is well worth promoting. Add to this the fact that this type of tourism extends the high season in spring and autumn and that golf tourists tend to show a high degree of loyalty and repeat custom, and you have a guarantee for the future.

Golf tourism’s potential is indisputa-ble; the sport is becoming increas-ingly popular and some 80 million

people worldwide practice it regularly. This number could exceed 120 million in less than ten years time. The recent report carried out by Turespaña Turismo de golf en España 2011, Golf Tourism in Spain in 2011, emphasises the fact that “there is something which is growing even more: the number of people who travel to enjoy golf experiences.”

1.6 million golf tourism trips take place every year in Europe, 60% of which take place outside the country of origin. Spain enjoys a clear and prominent leading po-sition within the European market with a market quota close to 40%, and more importantly, a business volume of 1.030 million Euros in 2011, thanks to the high expenditure of these tourists. Last year 884.848 golf tourists visited Spain, 3.47% more than in the previous year, and they

spent an average of 1.164.57 Euros. Ture-spaña specifies that around 58% of this total were men and 42% were women.

An analysis by consultancy firm Aguirre Newman, Estudio de mercado de cam-pos de golf en España, a market study on Spain’s golf courses, indicates that while the average amount spent per day by reg-ular tourists in 2010 was 98 Euros, golf tourists spent an average of 74% more, 171 Euros.

Apart from the higher spending regis-tered, the high season for golf tourists in Spain is in March, April, October and No-vember, which is very different to the tra-ditional high season for beach holidays, making it a key product for combating the seasonality of tourism. The majority of golf tourists stay in hotels (45%) and apart-ments (17%) and a significant 12% own second homes in Spain.

According to Turespaña, golfers visiting Spain are avid players, as we can see from

the frequency with which they play, aver-aging 8 days a month in their country of residence. More than 80% are golf club members and they tend to play at least 3 different courses during their trips abroad and tee off an average of 6 times per trip.

It is also important to note the interest shown by golf tourists in taking part in other activities during their stay, such as enjoying good gastronomy, shopping, and days out, which are their main activities of choice.

Great PotentialThe study carried out by KPMG for IAGTO

the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, shows that there is a favour-able tendency within the sector as 60% of the operators polled have registered an improvement in sales during the last year, against the 38% registered last year.

When asked about future prospects; 68% of the tour operators predict an in-crease in demand for this year and 4%

Leading European destination accounting for 40% of the market quota, with 431 courses

Golf tourism in Spain generated 1.030 million

Euros in 2011Spain is the leading destination for golf tourism in Europe and more than 880.000 tourists visited the country in 2011 to practice the sport. As the sector continues to grow and demand is expected to increase by 4% this year, maintaining the quality and attractiveness of the destination is essential.

expect significant growth. 19% think that demand will come to a standstill.

One of the key aspects of the study is an analysis of spending habits, which shows that golf tourists spend an average of 150 to 180 Euros a day during short stays (from one to three days) and 250 Euros during longer stays. The average length of stay is between 7 and 9 nights. Prices for pack-ages have remained constant for 51% of tour operators, whilst they have increased for 39% and decreased for 10%.

Spain and Portugal were the most popu-lar destinations in 2011, followed by the United Kingdom and Ireland and emerg-ing destinations such as Thailand, Vietnam and Turkey which are continuing to grow. The most powerful markets are the United States, Canada and Great Britain, followed by the Scandinavian countries (especially Sweden) and Germany.

Golf is also an interesting source of na-tional tourism; according to data from the

Spanish Golf Federation (Real Federación Española Golf); in January this year, there were 326.905 licensed amateur golf play-ers in Spain and 1.446 professionals.

The offer continues to improveThe tremendous growth experienced

in the construction of golf courses in the 90s in Spain could continue in the mid-term, according to Turespaña’s predic-tions, once the current economic difficul-ties have been overcome. The latest data from the Real Federación Española de Golf indicates that there are now 431 golf

courses in Spain. The Aguirre Newman study, which lists all the different types of facility related to golf, including pitch & putt, shows a total of 590, 49.7% of which are 18 hole courses.

Turespaña considers golf tourism to be one of the touristic products with the “greatest scope, tradition and with the most to offer within the sports tourism arena in Spain,” both for its direct effect on touristic income, as for its contribution to the devel-opment of quality tourism and the diversi-fication and extension of the season. The tourism institute includes the product within its core strategy for the international pro-motion and development of sports tourism.

The institute emphasises the need to continue progressing, improving the promotion and commercialisation of golf tourism amongst foreigners and increas-ing Spain’s competitive advantages as a destination when set against its main competitors.

A potential market of 14.8 million golf tourists

According to the National Golf Federation more than 25 mil-lion United States residents play golf on a regular basis. 3.5 million classify themselves as “avid golfers”, those

who play golf 25 times or more per year and 11.3 million as “core golfers” who play some 8 to 24 times a year.

These two groups are the ones most likely to travel abroad with the main intention of playing golf. This implies a potential market of more than 14 million golfers.

The Spanish Tourism Office in Miami notes that Spain has a challenge ahead if it wishes to benefit from this potential Ameri-can market, as it needs to make itself known as a golf destina-tion. Spain has all the qualities a US golf tourist is looking for, but it is currently not a destination they identify with the sport; as opposed to destinations like Scotland or Ireland.

They also stress that Spain is particularly attractive due to the fact that it offers an excellent infrastructure as well as a wealth of culture, history, art, gastronomy and other attractions for non golfers – so it should be promoted as something which golfers can enjoy with their families or partners.

One of the benefits that Spain must try hard to promote amongst the North American public is the fact that it boasts a great number of high quality golf courses which are located a short distance away from each other and which allows golfers to play at many different courses whilst staying at one hotel base. This is en-hanced by the fact that the courses are located near cities and villages which allow for a great variety of activities for those who do not want to play golf. Some of the most popular Spanish cities amongst tourists from the United States include several which are especially well suited to golf tourism, such as Malaga, Marbella, Seville, Valencia, Barcelona, Gerona and Madrid.

Another key factor is that Spain has a great variety of accom-modation on offer within the specific type which these tourists

tend to look for: 4 or 5 star and preferably boutique hotels or hotels with a “Spanish flavour.”

An important advantage is that there are direct flights from the United States to various cities and that Spain, unlike other golf destinations, offers great weather for play the whole year round.

Attracting tourists of such high spending power, who tend to travel in small groups of four to eight people, would be well worth the effort. They are likely to spend 6 to 8 nights in destinations such as Ireland or Scotland, but 10 to 14 nights on their trips to Spain, usually at two or three different destinations as they combine their passion for golf with their interest in history, gas-tronomy and culture. Another profile is the business golf travel-ler, who normally travels in groups of eight to sixteen people.

What is the current situation for Spain as a golf tourism desti-nation?

In the European market, golf tourism rep-resents more than 1.6 million trips a year, 60% of which are international. Spain enjoys a clear and prominent leadership, with a market quota of almost 40%. Our most direct competitors are Portugal and Morocco, because of their geographic proximity, and Turkey, which has advanced a great deal over the last few years. Spain’s moderate climate, together with its beautiful scenery, are decisive advan-tages, as are its magnificent transport net-work and the accommodation it has to of-fer which has been improving steadily over the last few years and has reached excel-lent standards. All this, added to Spain’s

high quality golf facilities make for an extremely competitive overall framework. There are currently 431 golf courses in Spain and they have developed inten-sively over the last twenty years. 64 new courses have been opened over the last two years alone, an increase of 17%, and

the previsions for new developments are optimistic. According to a report published by KPMG, recently reviewed by Hosteltur,

Spain and Portugal, after having moder-ated their prices, continue to be Europe’s most popular destinations, more even than the United Kingdom and Ireland.

How important is golf tourism within the entire spectrum of Spain’s tourism?According to our Institute of Tourism Stud-ies (IET), 884.848 foreign tourists visited Spain to play golf in 2011, 1.56% of the total number of tourists who arrived in Spain that year. However, this modest percentage does not reflect how important the market is for Spain’s economy. Golf tourists spent more than 1.030 million Euros in 2011, an average of 1.164,57 Euros per person, significantly more than the 934 Euros per person the Egatur questionnaire attributes to conventional tourism. Turespaña believes that golf should be a priority product within sports tourism as a whole and is treating it as such in its stra-tegic marketing plan and general tourism plan, both currently in their final stages of composition.

Does high expenditure continue to be golf tourism’s main advantage?Golf is a quality kind of tourism, which predominantly brings people in at differ-ent times of the year to the main tourism market, mainly in March, April, October and November. It generates growth syner-gies within other related sectors and that

is why it is so important that private en-tities continue to develop attractive com-plementary options such as the project

launched by Paradores, Paradores y Golf, and other initiatives such as wine and golf, wellness and golf, shopping and golf or art and golf.

Spain’s main tourism markets, Britain and Germany, are also the main mar-kets for golf; which other issuing coun-tries do you think could be of interest? The United Kingdom is our main source market. It represents 36% of the total number of foreign golf tourists; 316.882 British golf tourists visited Spain in 2011. It is followed by Germany with 178.399 and 20%. Nordic countries, Sweden in particular, as well as Ireland, France, Swit-zerland and Austria are also important Eu-ropean markets for Spain. We must not forget the American markets, mainly the United States, Canada and Ar-gentina, and at the same time I think Asian markets, namely China, are starting to gain importance. The Spanish tourism au-thorities have already launched significant promotional campaigns in these countries.

What can be done to improve the golf tourism product? In order to promote Spanish golf clubs internationally and to achieve high levels of profitability for businesses within the

sector, official bodies and private entities must work together. We need to consoli-date a sustainable development. If we invest in the installation of new tech-nologies we will be able to improve our facilities and tourism management as a whole. A commitment to the environment is also essential. If we persevere in this way, we are certain that the golf industry we help to create jobs and it will be able to count on Turespaña’s full support.

Do you think recent improvements have been able to dispel any reticence shown towards this type of tourism over environmental concerns?Golf developments are no longer consid-ered potentially damaging to the environ-ment, in fact, the majority opinion now is that golf courses can help to improve and maintain natural scenery and they are seen as a significant aesthetic contribution. The introduction of advanced regenerative technologies for sewage, which is now be-

ing reused to safely water golf courses, a logical measure given the arid conditions many regions in Spain suffer from, and the widely used regulations in place to reduce the impact golf complexes have on the environment, have undoubtedly helped to reduce any previous reticence. Gone are the days when golf was consid-ered a sport reserved for the elite in many issuing countries, including Spain, which is very important when it comes to the ex-pectations for growth for golf tourism.

884.848 golf tourists visited Spain in 2011. In 2005 and 2007 the country registered over a million golf visitors. Do you think we can expect to see a recovery of these numbers in the mid-term?Definitely. If we all work together, and once we have managed to overcome the extremely difficult economic situation we are currently going through, we can ex-pect to reach these numbers again. We have already detected some positive signs of a slow recovery, such as the develop-ment of the British market as a source of golf tourists. In 2006 we had reached a record number of 441.954 British tourists, a number which descended by 10% over the next three years, reaching 396.521 in

2009. We saw a drastic fall in the number of British tourists in 2010, however, when it fell by more than 25% in one year, to 295.315 – this can be attributed amongst other things to the drastic variations in re-lation to the pound sterling/euro exchange rate. The good news is that 316.882 Brit-ish tourists came to Spain to play golf in 2011, a positive recovery we hope will continue into 2012.

Is there room for growth in golf tour-ism or should Spain focus on improv-ing customer loyalty? It is very important that we maintain a constant flow of visitors. Another objec-tive is to make sure golf tourists already visiting us continue to do so over consec-utive seasons, this is one of Turespaña’s priorities and we are already working on achieving this. Indeed we believe customer satisfaction amongst golf tourists is already very high. There are a series of factors which are

vitally important when it comes to con-vincing tourists to return to a destination, these include; courtesy, the proverbial Spanish welcome, attention to detail, and a polite and friendly manner, and these also apply to golf tourism. But we also believe there are opportunities for growth, and we must make the most of these, especially within emerging markets. Golf has contributed to Spain’s image as an international quality tourism destination, and it has the potential to continue to do so. If we continue offering services of the high-est quality, which are internationally rec-

ognized, and reasonably priced, I am sure there will be a considerable increase in the amount of golf tourism Spain receives.

How will Turespaña be promoting the industry in 2012?Even though we have been unable to sponsor the Spanish Open, Open de Es-paña de Golf, this year (an event we have sponsored every year since 2001) due to severe budget reductions, our promo-tional efforts for golf tourism directed at foreign countries have intensified. Our Ex-terior Tourism Committees carried out 110 promotional activities in 2010 and 133 in 2011, whereas this year, there are 145 activities planned, including press tips, travel agent services, online marketing and promotional events. These are impor-tant promotional tasks to attract foreign customers, and they entail a total estimat-ed direct cost of 221.047 Euros.

“One of our main objectives is to make sure golf tourists visiting us do so again over consecutive

seasons – this is a priority for us”

An analysis of supply of demand in 2011 reflects this community’s con-tinued leadership in the sector, even

though it has inevitably been affected by the economic crisis. The region boasts a total of 106 golf courses, 50% of which are located in the province of Malaga and 20.8% in Cadiz.

According to the report published by the Junta de Andalusia’s Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sports Turismo de Golf en Andalucía 2011 (Golf Tourism in Andalu-sia), the courses available throughout the rest of the provinces can be reflected as follows; 9.4 % in Almeria, Huelva 8.5 %, Seville 5.7 %, Granada 2.8 %, Cordoba 1.9 % and Jaén 0.9 %.

On a national level, Andalusia is the region with the most to offer golfers, ac-counting for 22.9% of the courses in the country in 2011, according to data pub-lished by the Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG). As for the number of registered

players, the region is currently second, with Madrid being the region with the highest number. Specifically, Andalu-sia registered 50.697 licenses in 2011, 15.5% of the total number in Spain, but 0.5% less than in 2010.

The number of golf tourists arriving in the region also fell by 0.5%, with 425.000 arriving last year, 1.9% of the total number of tourists who visited Andalusia during the whole of the year.

However, and on a positive note for the sector, the region did detect a rise in the use of hotels as accommodation. 64.3% chose to stay at a hotel while 35.7% chose to stay in apartments, houses or chalets, either of their own (19%), or belonging to friends or family (12.3%) or rented (4.4%). Nevertheless, hotel use is inferior for this type of traveller than it is for conventional tourists, who choose it 69.8% of the time.

Combining Golf with Restaurants and Shopping

Golf tourists stay for an average of 13.9 days in Andalusia, whilst the average stay for tourists visiting the region is 9 days. The average amount spent by golf tour-

ists is €91.23, whereas average tourists spend €60.40. Both variables confirm what the Andalusian government has al-ready declared, that this touristic sector is a very promising one.

It is also worth noting that golf tour-ists spent the most amount of money at restaurants and in buying green fees, and that these made up for 67.3% of their spending, followed by shopping which made up for 15.6%.

The tendency to combine golf with gas-tronomy and shopping was not the only one detected as visitors also like to com-bine the sport with visits to the Andalusian beaches. On another note, it is important to note that more visitors now use the in-ternet, 25% more per year. 82% of golf visitors planned their stay via the Internet including all the activities they wanted to enjoy at their destination.

As for actual time spent playing golf, players in Andalusia teed off 4.6 times on average and visited an average of 2.5 courses during their holiday.

Loyal and satisfied customersAccording to the report published by the

More than 20 projects are currently being processed

Andalusia: an established offer which is striving for further growthEven though Andalusia’s golf offering continues to be the most extensive in Spain, each of its eight provinces are aspiring to further improve its attractions with new projects which are all currently in different phases of development. The development and construction process for new golf courses is now much easier, thanks to the new regulations which have recently come into force in the region.

Junta de Andalucía, 84% of the tourists who chose to visit Andalusia in 2011 to play golf, had visited the region before within the last four years, for the same reason.

Also, 84.6% thinks they will visit Anda-lusia again, most, 67.2%, to play golf, and 19.7% to enjoy the beaches and sunshine.

Feedback given about Andalusia´s golf facilities is very positive, with the average mark given being an 8, (on a scale of 1

to 10) which is the same average point as last year. The aspects which golfers were happiest about are: the design of the courses, the services, booking manage-ment and the conservation of the facilities’ natural surroundings.

Future projectsA number of new projects, all in differ-

ent stages of development, would like to be included in this well rounded and well valued golf offering.

The project which is most likely to achieve this is the Següesal Golf Resort, in the municipality of Barbate (Cadiz), the first and only course to have been declared a ‘touristic interest’ site by the Junta de Andalucía, even before construc-tion work has begun; the project is pend-ing inclusion in the municipality’s urban development plan (PGOU).

But it is not the only one, as an an-nouncement was made in June declaring Castellar Golf course a ‘tourist interest’ site. The complex, located in Castellar de la Frontera (Cadiz), and promoted by Valderrama 07, includes an 18 hole golf course, a five star hotel with 150 rooms,

100 aparthotel units, a residential area with multi-family housing as well as ban-queting rooms and various sports, health and beauty facilities.

Jimena Golf Resort, also in Cadiz, has also advanced significantly having already passed the evaluation carried out by the technical grading commission.

The Andalusian ministry for Tourism and Sports confirmed in an interview with

Hosteltur that another two projects, Cas-tellar Golf and Jimena Golf Resort, have advanced significantly and have passed the evaluation carried out by the technical grading commission. Both are in the region of Cadiz; the Castellar de la Frontera project has been put forward as a complement to the Sotogrande course and includes 150 housing units, while the Jimena de la Frontera project is looking at 600 housing units and 900 touristic apartments.

However, the technical commis-sion has recently rejected another nine projects, which at the time of writing, still had time before the stipulated deadline to question the decision. According to the Junta they have been rejected because “they do not comply with the urban, en-vironmental and touristic requirements set out for this type of facility.” They are the following courses; El Agujetero and Montellano Golf, in Seville; Finca Corvite and Golf Resort Las Lomas, in Malaga; Las Lomas del Duque, in Cordoba; Cas-tillo de Tajarja, in Granada; Hoya Altica, in Almeria; La Joyita Golf, in Cadiz; and Los Palmares, in Granada.

As RDGolfConsulting informed us, there

are several other projects which have been presented by Spring 2012 but which have not yet received any feedback from the commission. Specifically there are ten other projects: Los Velez Golf and Terma-lia Golf, in Almeria; Comendadera Golf and La Resinera Golf, in Malaga; Finca La Camerana and Finca La Merced, in Cadiz; Juliana Golf, in Seville; Sierra Nevada Golf, in Granada; and Paraíso Golf, in Jaén. All of these have already been published in the BOJA, the region’s official gazette, except for La Resinera Golf which is still pending publication.

New legislation for faster procedures

During the month of May, and in the af-termath of local elections, the procedure required for new golf courses was made a lot faster; a lot of the bureaucracy involved has been improved by the Order of the 13th of March 2012, which sets out the proc-ess whereby golf courses in Andalusia can achieve official ‘tourist interest’ status. This is basically a document which explains the steps the project developers must take.

The new law establishes a very con-crete time period within which the differ-ent procedures must be carried out and in article 18.4 it specifically states that “the deadline for the resolution and notification of a positive or negative outcome for ap-plications for ‘tourist interest’ status will be six months after the application has been received by the relevant office. An application may be deemed accepted if the applicant has not been notified to the contrary once the deadline is up.” The lat-ter will no doubt force the region to resolve all applications quickly.

Apart from these projects La Manzanilla Golf in Mijas (Malaga) is also pending con-struction; a project which obtained its permit before the current decree came into force. This course is still waiting to receive its re-ports from the interprovincial commission.

The Andalusian golf offering has not in-creased over this past year, but it continues to be one of the most important touristic segments both for the Autonomous Region of Andalusia as for its different provincial tourism boards, which feature it prominent-ly in their promotional campaigns.

It also plays a very important role in sustainability, as golf developers are very committed to protecting the environment and work together within Promotur, an as-sociation for Residential Tourism, Sports and Health in Andalusia.

If there’s a sport which combines with tourism, it’s golf, and if there’s a touristic area which has paid the sport special attention, it’s the province of Malaga and its Costa del Sol. There are around 70 courses to be found in this area which is currently Europe’s premier golf destination.

The area’s variety of facilities, with golf courses which are all very different from each other, and rounds for all levels and tastes, are enhanced by the professionalism of the compa-

nies dedicated to golf services in the province, as well as the hotels which specialise in this sector.

The Malaga and Costa del Sol tourism board has recently developed national and international initiatives in order to promote itself as a golf destination. Highlights include the first edition of the “Sol Norwegian Cup”, in collaboration with the Spanish Tourism Office in Oslo, and the sixth edition of the Circuito Costa del Sol Masters Madrid.

The president of the tourism board, Elias Bendodo, as its general director, Arturo Bernal, have both said that there will be more pro-motional initiatives for golf tourism this year than ever before, as the sector is so important.

An ideal destinationThe tournament celebrated in Norway is aimed at capturing the

important tourist market which this Nordic country represents and from which more than a million tourists travel to Spain every year. Spain is Norway’s second favourite tourism destination, after Swe-den, and the region they visit the most is the Canary Islands, fol-lowed by Andalusia with Malaga and Costa del Sol as the most fa-voured area. There are around 150.000 golfers in Norway and their interest in the sport is enhanced by their high spending power and

the current strength of their currency, the Norwegian Krone. According to the golf director of the Malaga -Costa del Sol Tour-

ism Board, Marcelo Molinari, the Norwegian competition included a workshop and a working breakfast during which some fifteen busi-nessmen from the Costa del Sol presented their services to the main Norwegian tour-operators and journalists specialised in the golf and conference sectors.

Near MadridThe sixth Circuito Costa del Sol Masters Madrid also sparked a

lot of curiosity. 2500 players took part in the competition which took place at 9 different courses across the community of Madrid; it started in April at the Club de Campo Villa in Madrid, then moved on to La Moraleja Club de Golf, and then in May to the club de golf Lomas Bosque and the Club de Golf Retamares at the beginning of June, needless to say all stages of the competition were completely

full. With the aim of promoting and spreading awareness about the many golf courses offered by “Costa del Sol-Costa del Golf”, amongst Madrid based players, as well as promoting the many re-sources available in Malaga and the Costa del Sol, special emphasis was given to the improvement in communications and the proximity of the destination thanks to the AVE train connecting Madrid and Malaga. The circuit’s grand final will take place in the Costa del Sol, at the Golf Almenara course on the 27th of October.

Special Golf | July 2012 13

Hotel Almenara is located in the exclusive area of Sotogrande, in front of the Mediter-ranean Sea and surrounded by some of the best golf courses in Europe. It is easily ac-cessible from Malaga, Jerez de la Frontera and Gibraltar airports and is only half an hour away from Marbella.

Almenara – for those who dream of wide open spaces

Located in the middle of its very own golf course, Almenara offers 148 rooms, all beautifully decorated using natural materi-als which retain a warm and refined local flavour. The rooms are distributed around the main building which means that they all have views of the green, the gardens or the Mediterranean Sea.

A temple of golfAt the Almenara golf course, it is always

a good time for a round of golf, regardless

of the season or the time of day. The course guarantees a new challenge for players on every round; it boasts 27 holes, designed by Dave Thomas, split into three different routes of 18 holes each, all par 72. The course winds its way through a natural scenery of exceptional beauty, where large lakes surrounded by pine trees and cork oaks add unique character. The hotel also offers the possibility of booking green fees at any of the other excellent courses in the area, including Club de Golf La Reserva, Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, San Roque Club and La Cañada.

The resort also boasts a Golf Acad-emy, the only recognised high perform-ance centre (CAR) in Andalusia. Its swing analysis system using Astar video allows players to master their technique before moving on to the course. Its modern fa-cilities include 90 practice courses, 21 of which are covered, 3 practice holes, an il-luminated driving range for night-time use

and areas for practicing chipping, bunkers and putting.

Health, beauty and cuisineThe Elysium Spa is a unique wellness

and health facility. The centre offers guests innovative facial and body treatments, a hy-drothermal area with heated water, fitness centre, steam baths, Finnish sauna, relaxa-tion room and fully equipped gym.

Almenara offers a wide range of gas-

tronomy prepared and presented by its well known Executive Chef, Christian Baldowski. The resort has two restaurants, each with its own distinct character. Gaia offers inter-national cuisine and the slightly less formal Veinteeocho offers guests fabulous views of the golf course and the Mediterranean. The main building houses a cozy bar called Pentagrama and a few minutes away from the hotel, on the beach, guests can enjoy the Club de playa Cucurucho.

A wide range of possibilities for your events

Galicia and Asturias have decided to combine public and private initiatives in order to organise and add value to their

golf tourism offering, thereby creating holiday packages in which green fees are comple-mented by gastronomy, wellness and culture, in order to make them easier to market.

GaliciaGalicia has launched its Golf Tourism Plan of

Action 2010-2013, which aims to promote its strengths as a tourism destination and to mar-ket them together with golf, thereby positioning the sport as another resource available at the destination. The campaign also highlights the many benefits of its golf courses, which are already highly valued by players and which in-clude the fact that they are very well integrated into the natural surroundings, offer competitive prices and are seldom overcrowded.

In this way, the region has been able to create packages which also include natural hot springs and gastronomy and which have

given rise to products such as the Galician Golf Routes (Rutas Gallegas del Golf) and one aimed specifically at old age pensioners; a pro-file with high spending power which can help to improve the seasonality of the region and which can have a significant financial impact on the area.

The Asociación Galicia Destino Golf was founded as a result of the collaboration be-tween public and private entities, which is considered to be “essential” for the devel-opment of this sector. The Association’s members include all 22 golf courses, hotels, restaurants, estate agents, wineries etc and its objective is: to plan and execute market-ing, promotion and communication strate-gies at both national and international levels. This year the association is sponsoring the 3rd Peregrinación de AESGOLF Tournament; organising the 2nd Senior Golf Tournament of Galicia and the 1st Championship for the Naciones del Camino de Santiago; it is also taking part in the International Golf Travel

Market (IGTM) which takes place from the 12th to the 15th of November in the Algarve.

AsturiasThe Community of Asturias, an emerging

destination in this niche, has also wanted to add value to its strengths by creating a Prod-uct Club, Club de Producto, which combines its 16 golf courses and the area’s touristic offer, in order to facilitate access for players and fans. But the Principality has gone one step further and has become the first region to design an online tool, available on its website www.golfasturias.es, which allows surfers to buy green fees online, book accommodation and even some other complementary activities, the whole year round.

Vivi Hinojosa

Golf has become a strategic tool for tourism in the Cantabrian Coast, following the significant developments which have taken place over recent years. The area’s natural surroundings and its culinary, wellness, and cultural services all work in the region’s favour. All this is further enhanced by a good transport network which connects the facilities, cities and their airports.

The Cantabrian government has set out nine locations for 18 hole golf courses within its strategic plan for Tourism & Cul-ture (Eje estratégico de Turismo e Industria Cultural), which

also outlines the extension to be carried out at Abra del Pas, to be upgraded from a 15 to an 18 hole course. The plans presented by the community president, Ignacio Diego, at the Strategic Investment Conference InverCantabria, are indications of the region’s ongoing commitment to this segment of the market.

The nine future courses will be added to the current list of 11 golf courses in the region, to which we can now add another two centres; Real Golf Cantabria and Laredo Golf, both of which have their own driving range, school, entertainment holes and other serv-ices. All of the courses are located in areas which also offer cultural attractions and great bars and restaurants, as well as being very near to the coast.

Cantabria’s own golfing tradition and the fact that one of the greatest golfers of all time, Severiano Ballesteros, was born here, have contributed to its success and to the proliferation of courses located at places of exceptional natural beauty.

The coursesThe Real Golf de Pedreña, founded in 1928, is the oldest golf

course in Cantabria. Located 20 kilometres away from the capital, it boasts a privileged location with views of the bay of Santander, hundred year old trees and well groomed gardens. There are 27 holes, 18 of which were designed by Colt, Alison&Morrison, and the remaining nine by Severiano Ballesteros.

Seve also left his mark on the course at Santa Marina, an 18 hole course at San Vicente de la Barquera, as well as Ramón Sota, a nine

hole course at Agüero (Marina de Cudeyo). The latter course is de-scribed by many players as a “mini Augusta”, which gives one an idea of what inspired the design by the two times Champion of the Masters tournament held at Augusta. The course is suitable for everyone, from children to players with all handicaps and professionals.

The state owned company Cantur, Regional Tourism Promotion Society of Cantabria, manages two courses: Nestares, an 18 hole course located two kilometres away from Reinosa; and Abra del Pas, in Mogro, 15 kilometres away from the capital, which will soon be extended to 18 holes.

Another two municipally owned courses boast strategic locations within beautiful natural surroundings. They are La Junquera, a nine hole course located at Pedreña in front of the bay of Santander, which players can access by boat as well as by road; and Mat-aleñas, also a nine hole course, located by the Sardinero beaches, in the Cantabrian capital.

The Community’s golf facilities are completed by another three 9 hole courses: Golf Rovacías, located next to a residential area within the municipality of Comillas; Noja Club de Golf, in the tour-istic area of the same name, and Club Parayas, very near to the Santander airport.

In order to promote itself, the region or-ganises golf tournaments in its target markets, takes part in specialised fairs

and orientation trips and has published a multilingual edition of a map/guide in col-laboration with the Golf Tourism Club.

The second edition of the Catalan In-ternational Golf Festival (CIGF), a pro-motional series of tournaments which take place at 10 different golf courses in the UK, France, Sweden and Denmark, in which 150-200 players take part, will take place later this year. The main aim of the series is to promote Catalonia as a golf tourism destination within these markets.

Information on what Catalonia has to offer this segment, as well as about the compa-nies and entities which make up the ACT’s (Catalonia Tourism Agency) Golf Tourism Club, will be distributed at all the tourna-ments. The idea is to repeat the series at dif-

ferent courses and within different markets, with the final taking place in Catalonia.

The region will also host the final of the Business Morning Golf, a championship which is also sponsored by the ACT and which is divided into 36 tournaments which take place from May to October in Finland and Estonia. The participants are all execu-tives from 128 different companies, all at the forefront of their countries.

Specialised FairsOne of the region’s strongest plans of ac-

tion for this year is to also take part in spe-cialised fairs, such as the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), which will take place from the 12th to the 15th of November in the Algarve. The agency will also be carrying out a prospective research survey of the Chinese market at the China Golf Show.

As far as orientation trips go, the agency

is organising one within the macro-work-shop Buy Catalunya 2012 which takes place in June. Some 30 specialised tour operators will be taking part, from 14 dif-ferent origin markets.

A great golfing traditionCatalonia has a long established golfing

tradition, with more than 50,000 registered players. It is therefore not surprising that its first golf course dates back to 1914 or that there are currently 37 in total, as well as 38 pitch & putt and seven Par 3 courses, which are all mostly located in Costa Brava, Costa Daurada, the outskirts of Barcelona (specifically in the areas of Garraf, Mares-me and Vallès), near the capital of Lerida and in the Pyrenees.

The Golf Tourism Club (Club de Turis-mo de Golf), which was founded in 1996, is made up of many businesses which are in some way related to the sport, and its main objective it to present the Catalan golf offering in a structured and unified way. Current members include 22 golf clubs, accommodation establishments which col-laborate with golf clubs, travel agencies and specialised reservation centres, golf course associations, hotel companies and organisations offering structured packages.

The quality of the facilities in this area and the optimum conditions available here for playing golf, mean that is well deserving of the numerous international accolades it has been awarded, and several of its clubs have been chosen as venues for important international competitions.

Some of the golf courses are located within holiday resorts or near establish-ments which have been specifically de-signed for players and fans of the sport, as well as for their companions, and which also boast a wide variety of complementary facilities generally linked to health and well-ness, gastronomy and culture.

This year Catalonia is focusing on promoting its golf facilities to tourists within its main markets: the northern European countries of the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. The region has deservingly established itself as one of Europe’s premier golf destinations thanks to its 37 courses.

The ‘Golf Courses in Spain’ report (Campos de Golf en España), pub-lished by Madrid Golf and Aguirre

Newman, shows that Valencia is one of the Spanish regions with the highest number of golf tourists, together with An-dalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Ca-

nary Islands. 10% of Spanish golf courses are located in the Valencian Community and it makes approximately 144 million Euros a year from this type of tourism, which makes it an important element for extending the season.

According to data provided by the Generalitat Valenciana golf tourists in Valencia spend an average of 900 Euros per person and trip, making the average daily amount spent 136 Euros (216 Euros for people staying at hotel accommoda-tion and 123 Euros for those who don’t), while conventional tourists visiting the area spend an average of 71.3 Euros. The average length of stay is a week and dur-ing their stay, golfers tee off an average of three times and visit two courses. 56% of these visitors stay at free accommodation of their own (28%) or belonging to family (28 %). 48% stay at regulated accommo-dation; at 4 or 5 star hotels (26%), at 3 star hotels (4.7%) and holiday apartments (10%).

When looking at the origin of these travel-lers, we see that most are British (44%), fol-

lowed by Spanish (20.6%), German (7.5%), Swedish (6.2%) and French (5.5%). As for national visitors, 32% come from Madrid, and 14% from within Valencia.

The Generalitat Valenciana emphasis-es the significance of the level of customer satisfaction experienced by visitors to the region; 95% of visitors say they would recommend the destination, three out of every four golf tourists repeat the experi-ence and 51% heard about the destination through recommendations from friends or family.

Data collected by the Community of Valencia’s Golf Federation shows that on the 1st of January 2012 there were a total of 22.292 licensed players and 35 courses which means it currently occupies fourth place in the ranking of regions with the highest number of amateur players; after Madrid, Andalusia and Catalonia, according to the Valencia Tourism depart-ment.

As for its facilities, a new course was opened in Carcaixent last year, La Gal-iana, and there are also several renova-

tion projects underway, as is the case with La Sella, in Denia, where the course has been upgraded from 18 to 27 holes.

Marketing golf alongside other products

Amongst the many benefits this com-munity boasts when it comes to this type of tourism, the Generalitat would like to highlight the favourable climate, the ac-cessibility of the area, the variety of golf facilities and their value for money, to which we could add the beaches and sunshine on offer, the cultural activities

available and the varied gastronomy and leisure. Even so, in order to improve what it has to offer and to add extra value to its services, Valencia’s Tourism department is working on promoting complementary activities, marketing golf alongside other products such as sun and sea, wellness and cultural tourism.

One of the activities planned for golf tourists is the third edition of the Circuito Costa Blanca Amateur Tour, organised by the Association of Golf Courses in the Costa Blanca, and aimed at all play-ers wanting to take part, regardless of

whether they are licensed members, resi-dents or foreigners. In 2011, the courses involved in this association (14 in number) welcomed more than 400.000 players.

Valencia will also be taking part in one of the largest fairs dedicated to golf tour-ism, the IGTM, which will take place in November in the Portuguese Algarve. The region also promotes itself as a golf tour-ism destination at other tourism fairs and via ‘fam trips’ and global marketing cam-paigns.

The Balearic Islands boast one of the most important golf offerings in the country. According to the Spanish

Golf Federation RFEG Real Federación Española de Golf, its 26 courses repre-sent 5% of the national total. The region is preparing to improve and extend its of-fering with various new projects. The first of these is the Calviá Beach Resort, the first phase of which will be opened this summer. This will be a new complex lo-cated in Magaluf (Mallorca) which, once finished, will be made up of the seven Meliá Hotels International hotels in the area, which are Sol Antillas Barbados, Sol Trinidad, Sol Guadalupe, Sol Jamaica, Sol Magaluf Park, Beach House and Sol Wave House, which will all undergo compre-hensive renovation work. The project has been declared ‘of regional interest’ by the local Balearic government.

This is an all-encompassing project

within which golf is one of the most impor-tant features and is offered together with other attractions for tourists either staying at the hotel or visiting the complex during their holiday on the island. There are three golf courses in the vicinity; Santa Ponça, which has a total of 54 holes, Golf de Po-nent and Real Golf de Bendinat, each with 18 holes, and Meliá has included these as part of the project’s strategic strengths. The hotel chain also mentions the benefit offered by several other golf courses lo-cated near the complex: Golf de Andratx, and the trio formed by Son Muntaner, Son Quint and Son Vida.

The last two hotels, Beach House and Sol Wave House, will open their doors in June 2012 after having been completed reno-vated, and as the first phase in the project. Sol Wave House replaces hotel Royal Beach which will now also include an international surf centre and renovated apartments

which will be marketed as ‘aparthotel’ and ‘condotel’ accommodation. All communal areas have been moved to the first floor. The establishment will offer live music, var-ious restaurants and a small shopping mall. The Beach House, which has also been modernized, is to be connected to the Sol Antillas Barbados via extensive gardens, and will feature a Beach Club by interna-tional brand Nikki Beach.

The ‘regional interest’ declaration giv-en to the project is set out in Decree nº 4/2010, of the 16th of June correspond-ing to urgent measures for promoting in-vestment in the Balearics, and guarantees preferential and fast treatment within the administration to ensure the project can be completed as swiftly as possible.

Sa Rapita and CanyamelAnother two projects have also been

declared ‘of regional interest’; two five star hotels which will also extend and im-prove the golf offering. The first of these includes a new course, a 9 hole pitch and putt. The second will be located next to Golf Canyamel, and will maximize the en-joyment and use of this golf course.

The project which features a new golf course will be developed in the municipal-ity of Campos, in the south of Mallorca. The complex will be located at the Son Durí de Sa Ràpita estate, will feature 285 rooms and 203 suites and will require an investment of 120 million Euros. It will feature varied sports facilities; a social club, swimming pools, paddle and tennis courts, a sports centre, the 9 hole pitch and putt course and a golf academy.

The Govern has stressed that the project complies with quality tourism criteria; its architecture will be fully integrated with and will respect the environment, as well as being sustainable and energy efficient. Plans for this project have been presented by Mirador d’es Trenc SL and Cases de Sa Ràpita SL registered companies.

As for the second establishment, lo-cated next to Canyamel Golf, plans have been submitted by Cap Vermell Hotels Projectes i Promocions SL, who has signed an agreement with the Hyatt ho-tel chain, who will run the establishment.

The Balearic Islands have various projects planned which will enrich their current offering with new golf courses and new concepts, improving their current position in the market even more, both on a national and international level.

Both public and private entities are committed to furthering this sector

Aimed at great luxury, the hotel will boast 142 rooms. This project will require an investment of around 100 million Euros.

In the same way that Canyamel Golf and its clients will benefit from this new project, Golf Son Termens’ clients have benefited from the opening of the new Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa, which opened on the 24th of April and is the first hotel in Spain and the first resort in Eu-rope by the prestigious Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts group.

With its privileged location overlooking the Sóller bay, Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa will provide a luxurious and sensorial experience which is both idyllic and unique, for travellers with a passion for nature and who like to discover local traditions, to con-nect with their destination and to enjoy an internationally recognized level of service.

The commitment shown by hotels

The islands’ hotels have been quick to recognise golf as a very interesting mar-ket for them. In Mallorca, the island which features most of the region’s offering – 24

out of the 26 courses -, according to data provided by the Mallorca hotel association FEHM, Federación Empresarial Hotelera de Mallorca, 23% of hotel establishments specialise in golf. Not only do hotels here offer excellent quality, but they are also constantly being renewed in order to pro-vide the best service possible. Some of the most significant renovations to have taken place over the last year include the reno-vation of the Royal Cupido hotel, the Pal-ladium hotel, the Hipocampo Playa and the Cala Millor Park, both members of Hipotels group. One of the hotels which makes up the prestigious trio of establishments at the Arabella Golf Resort, the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf will also soon undergo a com-plete refurbishment, for which its doors will be closed in January 2013.

The FEHM is currently developing a project called Un mar de experiencias “A Sea of Experiences” within which golf will feature prominently. Its aim is to analyse the sport’s potential in detail, as a prod-uct which can lengthen the season, and to compose a plan of action in conjunction with the golf courses. According to data

provided by the association, golf tourists spend an average of 400 Euros a day which provides an annual income of 177 million Euros a year for Mallorca. They prefer to stay at 4 or 5 star hotels, their average length of stay in 7 days and most of them are of German origin, although the sport also attracts British and Nordic tourists to the region. These tourists are mostly men of between 35 and 45 years of age, of high spending power and who tend to seek out information about golf in Mallorca on the Internet. What they value the most about what the region has to of-fer is its favourable climate and excellent infrastructure.

Wherever the tourists decide to stay they will find a golf course in Mallorca less than 20 kilometres away. Golf facilities here are so abundant and accessible that players could enjoy the luxury of playing at a different course every day for weeks. The difficulty of play is interesting throughout as the courses have very different techni-cal characteristics and are suitable both for professionals and amateurs, and many of them also offer golf academies and golf

courses for various levels of expertise. In Menorca and Ibiza however, there is

very little on offer in terms of golf and the private sector strongly vindicates the need for more facilities so that both islands can become golf destinations in their own right. The Ibiza and Formentera hotel federation would welcome any number

of new facilities as this would mean more tourists and in turn would benefit the tour-ism sector as a whole.

The local Balearic authorities consider golf to be of the upmost importance. The Balearic tourism agency ATB Agencia Bal-ear de Turismo features it prominently in its promotional campaigns. The Palma

town hall is also committed to its promo-tion. Its new foundation, Turismo Palma de Mallorca 365, presented in January 2012 features golf as one of the main sec-tors to be promoted within its campaigns over the next few years.

There are 26 golf courses in the Bal-earic Islands. Their excellent technical characteristics together with their firm

commitment to quality and sustainability have meant that Balearic golf courses have become very highly valued both by profes-sionals as by golf lovers in general.

All the courses have been perfectly inte-grated into their natural surroundings and many have set their sights on meeting the highest standards of quality and sustainabil-ity. This has led them to implement various energy saving measures at their facilities and there are currently a high percentage of courses with environmental and quality assurance certificates such as the Audubon

International system, the UNE 188001, the ISO 14001 for environmental management or even the QB certificate of touristic quality issued by the Balearic Islands.

High-end resortsMost of the golf on offer in the Balearic

Islands is concentrated on the island of Mallorca. There, golfers have a huge array of options for play, with technical differ-ences at each course and the possibility of combining play with a never-ending choice of activities: gastronomy, relaxation, nature, culture… all backed up by very high quality hotels including establishments which spe-cialise in this type of tourist.

The south of the island is home to the highest number of courses, which not only allows players to go from course to course with ease and so play a varied and attrac-tive range of facilities, but also has the add-ed advantage of being within close proxim-ity to the capital city, Palma de Mallorca.

It is precisely in Palma where the group made up by Arabella Golf, Son Vida, Arabella Golf Son Muntaner, Arabella Golf Son Quint and the Pitch & Putt Arabella Golf Son Quint Exceutive, one of the island’s highlights, is located. These courses are all located within a very short distance from each other and make up a golf complex numbering 63 holes. Their cli-ents also have the added benefit of being able to stay at any of the luxury establish-ments which accompany these courses, such as the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel or the Castillo Hotel Son Vida.

Also spectacular are the facilities sur-rounding another two hotels; the Mallorca Son Antem Golf & Spa, which has two 18 hole courses or the St Regis Mardavall, for the most luxurious accommodation on the island and located very near to courses such as Santa Ponsa Golf, with two 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course, Golf de Poniente, or Real Golf de Bendinat, a Mallorcan classic.

A fresh and nourishing variety of golf courses

Golf de Andratx stands out for the ex-cellent gastronomic services available in its surrounding area while others, such as Golf Maioris, Golf Son Gual and Golf Park Puntiró excel at event organisation and business meetings.

In the northeast of the island courses such as the Golf de Son Servera, Capde-pera Golf or Canyamel Golf are amongst the highlights. The latter is a must visit for

Few golf destinations have such a wide variety of courses concentrated within such a short distance as the Balearic Islands. And if there is something which makes the islands stand out from other golf destinations it’s the wealth of tourist attractions available which visitors can combine with the sport for the perfect holiday. Culture, Gastronomy, Nature, Sports, Wellness or even business events. All this, added to the wonderful Mediterranean weather and a quality hotel infrastructure which specialises in golf tourism, makes the Balearics an ideal place to enjoy the sport together with a wide variety of experiences at any time of year.

those who also love art as its facilities are often used as a venue for art exhibitions.

Nearby we come across Pula Golf, where tourists can stay at the welcoming establishment located within the course, Petit Hotel Cases de Pula, or enjoy a meal at the cheerful restaurant Pasta Pula, de-signed by Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada.

Visitors should not miss the incredible views of the bay at Golf de Pollença, in the north of the island, or indeed, the vistas of Alcudia Bay from Alcanada Golf.

On the eastern side of Mallorca, La Reserva Rotana Golf is a private club in an enchanting setting which also has its own rural hotel whose building dates back to the 17th century as well as the rural tourism establishment Es Mayolet. Also unique for their beauty and varied scenery are Vall d’Or Golf or the inland course at Son Ter-mens, and this completes the Mallorcan golf offering.

On the island of Ibiza we find Golf de Ibiza. With a total of 27 holes, this course is made up of two courses which are very different from each other technically speak-ing and which were merged together when the old Club de Golf Roca Llisa closed. In Menorca Golf Son Park combines the sport with a privileged natural environment and a unique variety of flora and fauna.

More sport or relaxation? The Balearics are a magnificent destina-

tion in which to play golf, not only because of the wide variety of first rate courses but also because the islands boast touristic at-tractions which are of a very high value, especially when compared to other golf destinations.

Starting with the environment itself, the Balearic Islands are a natural paradise at the visitors’ disposal. With various protect-ed areas, natural parks or reserves and the recent declaration of the Serra de Tramun-tana as a World Heritage Site, the Balearics boast an exceptional natural heritage which golf visitors will find is well worth exploring.

But if you prefer spending your time tak-ing part in other sports, there are great cycling and hiking routes throughout the islands, and these are a unique way of getting to know the islands on land. If you prefer being on the water, there are more than 65 marinas on the islands which offer tourists the opportunity to enjoy unforget-table sea based activities.

As an alternative or as a complement,

what could be better than the excellent Spa and Wellness facilities available at special-ised centres and hotels across the islands? An excellent way to unwind after a day spent playing golf.

And our report would not be complete if we did not mention the Gastronomy available in the Balearic Islands, both at restaurants located on golf courses, as throughout the villages and towns, visiting the traditional cellers, or trying some of the most typical dishes such as lobster cal-dereta, sofrit pagès or Mallorcan tumbet, to name just a few. And the local cuisine is perfectly complemented by local wines of exceptional quality and flavour.

The perfect venue for your events

But if the islands stand out for offering one ideal complement to golf, then it has to be Conferences and Events. Whether you are looking to complement an event with some rounds of golf, or you are a group of golfers looking to organise your business meetings, this is the perfect place for you.

The Balearics boast various conference centres such as the Palacio de Congresos de Ibiza, the Auditorium in Palma, the mul-tifunctional hall at Es Mercadal or the Pue-blo Español complex, as well as the soon to be opened Palacio de Congresos in Palma. There is also a high percentage of hotel establishments with their own combined resources, including integrated or nearby golf courses and meeting rooms.

All this can be combined with the ex-traordinary cultural offering available for you to enjoy, a wide array of shopping op-tions or even local handicraft routes. It is easy to create a tailor made and completely unforgettable stay in the Balearic Islands.

Apart from the comparative advantage of the weather, the Canary Islands’ unique topography has created

courses which feature peculiar layouts and routes, creating exciting levels of difficulty for players of all abilities with quality facili-ties which are supported by marketing and promotional campaigns.

Strategic objectiveThe tourism ministry upholds golf tour-

ism as a strategic objective for the Canar-ies, not only because it diversifies its offer within a quality sector, but also because of the golf tourists’ high spending power which allows the market the maximise its profitability.

More than 173.575 foreign tourists vis-ited the Canaries to play golf in 2011, ac-cording to data provided by Turespaña’s Tourism Studies institute. Their total ex-penditure was over 212 million Euros, making the region the second destination with the highest income for this concept, behind Andalusia. The average amount spent per day for this sector in the Canary Islands increased, according to a question-naire about tourism expenditure, to 161.66 Euros, compared to the 119.16 Euros per day spent by conventional tourists.

The United Kingdom, Germany and the Nordic countries are the main international issuing markets of golf tourists to this region. 32.1% stay at 4 star hotels or aparthotels, while 24% stay at 5 star hotels.

The app is free and it was downloaded by users in more than 30 different countries within the first week of its launch.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, promoting themselves separately

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are striv-ing to make a name for themselves as two of the sector’s leading destinations. The island of Fuerteventura has three golf courses. The Stella Jandía Golf Club, an 18 hole, par 72 course, of medium difficulty, located on the cliffs of Vinamar, at Morro Jable, will be reopening soon. The Stella Jandia Golf Hotel is located in the centre of the course; a 4 star hotel with 170 fully equipped apartment style rooms, with their own living room and bedrooms for two and four guests.

Fuerteventura aims to establish itself as an all year round golf destination as “tour-ists can play almost the whole year round”. The tourism authority is backing Fuerteven-tura as a golf destination with an enthusi-

astic promotional campaign at specialised fairs, such as the IGTM, tournaments, to-gether with Promotur Canarias, and via fam trips and golf press-trips.

Lanzarote also has three courses, two 18 hole par 72 courses and one Pitch and Putt 9 hole par 27 course.

The islands had created the Lanzafu-erte brand in order to promote their golf offering together, which is why the data currently available is for tourists who had visited both islands to play golf. In 2010, they jointly received 48.826 tourists, mainly from the United Kingdom, Nordic countries and Germany. Their average

daily expenditure was 95 Euros and their average length of stay was 10 days. How-ever, the agreement between the islands has now ceased and they will go back to promoting themselves separately. The di-rector of Fuerteventura Golf Club, Guillem Benassai, explained in an interview with HOSTELTUR that it had turned out to be very difficult to structure packages and of-fers combining the infrastructure available at both islands, as they “could not com-pete on price” due to the transport costs involved.

Gran Canaria registered some 180.000 golfers and golf tourists in 2011. This number is 17% more

than the amount registered in 2010 and confirms the island’s continual growth over the last ten years.

These tourists spend an average of 100 Euros a day at golf courses, and around 180 Euros on all services including ac-commodation, food and drink, green fees and extras. During the high season, their average length of stay is nine days, teeing off between 4 and 5 times and visiting a minimum of three different courses.

The main issuing markets for golf tour-ists to Gran Canaria during the winter months are Germany, Scandinavian coun-tries and Britain. “The first two markets represent almost 60% of the total of our visitors”, the director of the Gran Canaria golf course association, Pablo Llinares, pointed out, adding that “the national market contributes very strongly” during the summer season.

Llinares stressed that “the golf industry is very beneficial for the area or region pro-moting it” and that it brings in tourists “who spend an average of 4 times more than a regular beach holiday tourist; and who visit restaurants in the area, are interested in culture, rent cars or use taxis to get to courses, and also enjoy shopping in com-mercial areas”. Businesses offering health

and wellness products, gastronomy and nightlife all benefit from golf tourists.

Gran Canaria’s GolfGran Canaria’s golf course association

promotes seven courses on the island: five commercial courses located in the south and two social courses in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

This year the facilities on offer have been brought together in a structured portfolio of services which includes the golf courses

and 32 recommended hotel and alternative accommodation establishments. The latter include one 5 star ultra luxury hotel, the only Leading Hotels of the World member in Gran Canaria, eight more 5 star establish-ments, two 4 star superior ones, thirteen 4 star, two 3 star, two villas, four bungalows and apartments.

Gran Canaria hosted the IGTM in 2005 and with its seven 18 hole courses locat-ed less than 30 minutes away from each other, has become a well established golf destination. “The current challenge,” said Mr Llinares, “is to maintain the excellent results we have been achieving and to continue improving and adapting to clients’ requirements, both at the destination, by improving our facilities and service, as at the place of origin, working on new devel-oping sales channels.”

Gran Canaria’s Cabildo has recently ap-proved nine new possible locations for the construction of golf courses via its

PIOT plan (Urban Planning Ordinance). The local golf course association highlights that “more than the construction of new develop-ments, what is important is that the Cabildo de Gran Canaria is committed to ensuring that any growth happens in a sustainable and organised way”.

The island boasts eight magnifi-cent courses, all very different and unique, distributed across the north

and south. Only half an hour away by ferry, on the neighbouring island of La Gomera, there is another course called Tecina Golf, which is sometimes included as part of Tenerife’s offering, making it a total of nine courses.

Buenavista Golf (18 holes) is located at Buenavista del Norte. Designed by Severi-ano Ballesteros, this course stands out for its originality and integration into the natu-ral habitat. It is known as Europe’s “Pebble Beach” and is designed in a “Links” style with 5 greens right next to the sea and the Atlantic as a lateral obstacle. Its most emblematic holes include number nine and number fifteen, which are outstandingly beautiful as well as number sixteen which is technically very challenging. Players can download technical advice given by Severi-ano Ballesteros with tricks for playing each

hole, from the course’s website. Real Club de Golf de Tenerife (18 holes)

is located in Tacoronte (in the north). It was designed by A. Alberto, A. Lucena, Joaquín Laynez and Aureliano Yanes and founded in 1932. It is the second oldest course in Spain and maintains a certain British character. Its hole number seventeen is undoubtedly

the most spectacular on the island. The tee is on the top of a hill and presents a 40 metre long incline towards the green with incredible views of the sea and mountain. The hole offers various options of play de-pending on the player’s level.

Golf del Sur (27 holes) is located at San Miguel de Abona (in the south). It was designed by Pepe Gancedo and offers an entertaining route. It was first opened in 1987 with an important tournament for professionals. The course has recently been remodelled by Manuel Piñero. It is made up of three nine hole routes (North, Links and South). The bunkers are made out of black sand which fits in nicely with the scenery and the autochthonous plants. Hole number three stands out on the north course; it runs along the San Blas Lake, which is an environmental reserve. On the Links course, hole number five is the most impressive: the height of its tee offers players fantastic views over the course and the sea. On the south course, hole number two is known as “the fried egg” due to the fact that the green is completely

surrounded by volcanic sand. Amarilla Golf (18 holes) is located in San

Miguel de Abona (in the south) and was designed by Donald Steel. This course has a great deal of personality, incredible views of the ocean and sometimes forces the player to play the ball over the waves in order to get to the green. This is the

case at hole number five, which is un-doubtedly one of the most spectacular on the course and the one which attracts the most attention from photographers.

Centro de Golf Los Palos (9 holes, par 27) is located in Arona (in the south) and was designed by a company called Golf Design. It is made up of lush and colourful gardens and is almost entirely flat. Made interesting by refreshing water obstacles such as lakes and streams, this course is ideal for begin-ners or for practicing short game.

Golf Las Americas (18 holes) is located in Arona (in the south) and was designed by John Jacobs. Built in an amphitheatre shape opposite the sea, it stands out for its original design. Its hole number five is well known for being one of the most dif-ficult on the island.

Golf Costa Adeje (27 holes) is located in Costa Adeje (in the south) and was designed by Pepe Gancedo. It is a peculiar course which incorporates the original topography and terraced farmland of the area. It is the first golf course in Europe which uses the Paspalum grass variety which is perfect for withstanding the salty water which is so typical of the island. Its Bermuda Tiff Eagle greens are firm and fast, qualities highly valued by golfers. The beauty of the auto-chthonous flora can be enjoyed throughout the length of the course.

18 hole Abama Golf, located in Guía de Isora (in the north-east) was designed by Dave Thomas. The course boasts spec-tacular views of the sea, La Gomera Island and occasionally, of El Hierro Island. The route is surrounded by exuberant veg-

etation; 22 lakes connected by impres-sive waterfalls, white sand bunkers and 25.000 palm trees. Its highest point is located at 315 metres above sea level.

Nearby, on the neighbouring island of La Gomera, 18 hole Tecina Golf is both spec-tacular and fun. Created by Donald Steel, this course boasts incredible views of the

Teide and the southern coast of Tenerife, especially from hole number four.

Apart from the courses, Tenerife has an extensive platform of first class hotels and apartments to offer, which specialise in providing services for golfers.

The quality of Tenerife’s golf courses and its excellent overall golf infrastruc-ture has meant that it has been able to host important national and international events and promotional and professional tournaments since 1989. The Tenerife Ladies Open, which celebrated its ninth edition in 2010, was launched in a new format in 2011, and went from being the Tenerife Ladies Open to the Tenerife La-dies Match Play. The new format tourna-ment is for 32 players and incorporates an innovative video and sound system: the players themselves are equipped with mi-crophones so that spectators at home can follow the conversations going on between

them and their caddies and cameras at strategic positions capture new views of the game. This provided an insider’s view of the game, with footage which had never been seen before on television. The tour-nament was included as part of the La-dies’ European Tour (LET), although it did not count towards overall scores, and it took place during the month of June.

In addition, the International Tenerife Golf Challenge has been held here every year since 2000; a tournament for golf journalists and industry professionals which includes activities for getting to know the island and its golf holiday fa-cilities. It is also important to note that the Open de España Femenino 2012 will take place in Tenerife from the 17th to the 23rd of September at Golf Las Américas. The official hotel for participants will be the Iberostar Grand Hotel Anthelia.

Tenerife has hosted more than ten

different competitions from the PGA Eu-ropean Tour and the Ladies European Tour. The list of winners at tournaments celebrated in Tenerife includes the names of prestigious players such as José María Olazábal, David Gilford and Mark James - all three Ryder Cup participants - and Raquel Carriedo and Elisabeth Esterl, both Solheim Cup players.

Play with the sea breeze at your back, and enjoy original scenery and unique natural views; there is no need to bring an umbrella or a coat, and you can play at eight courses of eight different styles, all only a few minutes away from your hotel. For nature, quality, professionalism, fun, and efficient and friendly service… look no further than GOLF in Tenerife.

The Community of Madrid boasts a series of elements which make it easy to position within the market for golf tourism. Joaquín Castillo, general director of Tourism for the Com-

munity of Madrid, believes the region’s efficient and cheap public transport network, which is able to mobilise large numbers of people for important sporting events, and which allows for an efficient con-nection between different sports facilities is one of its main attrac-tions. Other advantages he mentions are; its basic touristic offering and its complementary activities, the variety of accommodation and bars which cater to all tastes and budgets, and the variety of lei-sure options and shopping. He added that the region also boasts “an incredible infrastructure for golf courses, with some spectacular scenery, such as the Real Club de Golf La Herrería, next to the El Escorial monastery, which together with the courses at Alcalá de Henares and Aranjuez, forms a unique historical triangle; all three places have been declared World Heritage Sites, which makes the location of these three golf courses unique in the world.”

The region has a total of 34 clubs, some of which have two or three golf courses, which places Madrid as the third region in Spain with the highest number of facilities, after Andalusia and Catalo-nia, according to Madrid Tourism.

Other regions offer beaches as a complement to golf, but Madrid has to compete with its cultural, gastronomy and leisure offerings. Amongst the area’s highlights, Castillo indicates the security of the region, the favourable climate for play, the hospitality and the role car-ried out by the regional government in promotion of the sport. Local authorities are well aware of how important the sport is for tourism, as it not only favours demand outside of the high season (golf is generally practiced between the months of October and April), but also pro-motes the conservation of green areas around golf courses.

In 2011, the Community of Madrid was ranked the second region

in the country with the most registered players per area (at 1,49%), outranked only by Cantabria (1,58%), according to data provided in the “Campos de Golf en España” (Golf Clubs in Spain) report, com-posed by Madrid Golf and Aguirre Newman.

Future developments include plans for the Club de Campo del Noroeste, a major sports project, aimed at leisure and environmen-tal recovery, which will include an 18 hole golf course and club-house. Castillo claims that this “new green lung” will create 800 direct and indirect jobs. The golf courses initially included in the Eurovegas project development are also worth noting, as they will further enhance the region’s golf offering if Madrid is in the end chosen as the location for the complex.

Navarre, La Rioja and The Basque Country boast excellent golf courses and additional tourism attractions

related to gastronomy, wine, nature and culture, making them destinations which have the potential to be of great interest.

NavarreThree first class golf courses and one pitch

& putt, hundreds of restaurants, wines with designation of origin, enchanting cities and spectacular scenery; these are just some of the many benefits Navarre highlights in its “Navarra golf & gourmet” programme which has been set up to promote the region as a golf tourism destination. The programme focuses on promoting the community’s food and wine as the perfect complement to the golf facilities available. And with good rea-son; the Kingdom of Navarre boasts one of the most varied cuisines in Spain thanks to its excellent raw materials which include eve-rything from vegetables and pulses farmed on the banks of the Ebro river, to fresh water fish, designation of origin beef, a variety of cheeses and homemade desserts as well as its many well known wines.

The most traditional of the courses in Na-varre is the Ulzama Golf Club, designed by Javier Arana, which was founded in 1965 and is located within a privileged natural area some 20 minutes from Pamplona. The sec-ond course was created in 1995; the Zuasti Club de Campo designed by José María Olazábal, less than 10 minutes away from the

capital of Navarre, was founded as a family club and boasts excellent facilities which in-clude a beauty salon. A year later, due to the sport’s increasing popularity, the Club de Golf Castillo de Gorraiz was founded only four kilo-metres away from the centre of Pamplona, at Valle de Egüés. The Lizaso Centro de Golf completes the region’s offering; a pitch & putt 9 hole course with two tees per hole.

La Rioja La Rioja is the wine destination par excel-

lence, and promotes golf together with its main specialty as both activities complement each other perfectly. A good example of this is the “Golf y vino”, Golf and Wine league, the second edition of which takes place this year and which is organised by the La Rioja, La Grajera and Cirueña courses in collaboration with the specialised web portal lomejordelvin-oderioja.com, which consists of a total of 11 tournaments and is sponsored by several dif-

ferent wineries. La Rioja has three 18 hole golf courses; Rioja Alta Golf, in Cirueña, an area very near to Santo Domingo de la Cal-zada, Club de Golf Sojuela near Logroño, and the Logroño golf course which boasts the longest hole in Spain, at six hundred metres long and par 5. Plans are underway to build a fourth golf course in the Haro municipality.

The region’s facilities are constantly being updated and show a commitment to improved sustainability as we can see from the recent installation of a vertical axis wind turbine of 4 KW/hour and solar panels which will pro-duce another 3.4 KW/hour at the Cirueña golf course; together producing enough energy for the caddy loading hall, the buggies, the office, the driving range and the footbaths.

Basque CountryEven though golf tourism is not very de-

veloped in the Basque Country, this is a re-gion which has a lot of potential thanks to the quality and quantity of its infrastructure and the significance given to the sport in the area – it is the fourth region in Spain register-ing the highest number of licenses in relation to its population, succeeded only by Madrid, Cantabria and Asturias. The demand for the sport within the community can only be com-pared to that of Madrid, where there are more than 140 registered players for every hole; in the Basque Country there are more than 80. There are 12 golf courses in the Basque Country, five in the province of Vizcaya, four in Guipuzkoa and three in Álava.
