For many years, one of HI Iceland main ambitions has been to reduce
the impact their guests have on the environment.
The organization has, over the years, received a lot of attention for its
work in sustainability and along with the Reykjavík hostels, received
the following acknowledgements.
2010 The Reykjavík Hostels; Reykjavík City Hostel and Reykjavík Downtown Hostel, received the environmental recognition of the Ministry for the Environment.
2010 The Reykjavík Hostels, Reykjavík City and Reykjavík Downtown, receive the Icelandic Tourist Board Environmental Award 2010.
2010 The Reykjavík Downtown Hostel was successfully certified as HI Quality Hostel. This Certificate is an official recognition by Hostelling International, of excellence in provision of service and hospitality.
2010 Reykjavik Downtown Hostel got certificated by the Nordic Ecolabel, The Swan. The Swan is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries and stands for running a successful Environmental Quality System.
2005 The Reykjavík City Hostel was successfully certified as HI Quality Hostel. Reykjavik City Hostel became one of the first 12 Hostels around the World to receive this certification of Quality.
2004 Reykjavik City Hostel got certificated by the Nordic Ecolabel, The Swan.
2003 HI Iceland receives the Icelandic Tourist Board Environmental Award 2003.
2002 Reykjavík City Hostel received the City of Reykjavík Environmental Award for its contribution to environmental program.
Hostelling International Iceland have their own internal policy
which actively encourages high standards of ecological and environ-
mental practice in all their hostels. Those hostels that meet these
additional high standards are awarded the privilege of being called a
Green Hostel allowing them to display an environmental logo in the
brochure; there are currently ten such hostels in Iceland.

Welcome to the Hostelling International Iceland hostels (HI
Hostels). There are currently 35 hostels located all around the
country. HI Hostels are open to people of all ages. They offer
budget accommodation in a clean and comfortable lodging with
opportunity for self service, so travellers can keep travelling costs
at a minimum. No two hostels are alike. You can choose from
new hostels with modern facilities and old, charmingly renovated
hostels. But they have one thing in common: when you stay at an
HI Hostel you can always be sure of friendly and helpful service
from our staff. Hostels are ideal places to stay for individuals,
families and groups. Hostelling International Iceland is a part of
Hostelling International, which has more than 4000 hostels in 90
countries worldwide and 37 million overnights per year.
Accommodation
Accommodation is mostly in 2 – 6 bedded rooms and all HI
Hostels offer double and family rooms. There are duvets and
pillows in the beds so guests need only to bring their own bed
linen or rent it at the hostel. Guests can also use a sleeping bag if
they prefer. When staying at an HI Hostel you should bring your
own towels and soap.
Meals–Guest kitchens
All Icelandic HI Hostels have well equipped guest kitchens where
our guests may cook their own meals, without extra payment.
Most of the hostels serve breakfast and some of them also offer
dinner, lunch and packed lunch. Dinner and lunch needs to be
ordered in advance.
Activities
Hostels are more then just places to sleep. All Icelandic HI Hostels
offer their guests a variety of exciting activities at the hostels or
in the neighbourhood. Among the activities are rafting, angling,
swimming, hiking, riding, and glacier tours.
Bookings
You can turn up at a hostel without reservation but it is best
to book ahead. If double rooms are required bookings need to
be made in advance. Families who want to use a family room
and groups should also always book in advance. For booking or
further information, please contact either the hostels directly or
the office of Hostelling International Iceland, which is the central
booking office for all HI Hostels in Iceland. Reservations can be
made by email, fax or mail.
Travel Service
When it comes to planning and arranging your trip to Iceland we
would highly recommend our most popular package: combining
a rental car with accommodation at hostels. This combo is
both convenient and comes at a very good price! Our friendly
staff at the travel desks in Reykjavík City Hostel and Reykjavík
Downtown Hostel would be happy to assist you with all kinds
of travel arrangements, such as booking sightseeing tours with
complementary pick-up service.
For further information check out our website at www.hostel.is
Rent-a-Car PackageThe best way to discover Iceland and its nature is
on your own in a rental car. We therefore offer a
budget package which includes a rental car with
unlimited mileage and overnights at the HI Hostels
all around Iceland. As we have a limited number of
vehicles in each category, please book in good
advance.
