e Welcome participants, family, and friends,
On behalf of Smith College and the Department of Athletics, I would like to welcome you to the 2011 Seven Sisters Rowing Championships. We should see an exciting day of racing with Wellesley trying to defend its first ever varsity eight championship from last year along with a two year team title defense. Mount Holyoke is a perennial Seven Sisters winner getting out quick in the fall but don’t count out Smith racing at home and Simmons building on the last two year’s successes!
Seven Sisters competition epitomizes a special blending of pride, integrity, teamwork, and a sharing in the rich women’s tradition in sport. We hope it is an exciting day for the competitors, coaches, and fans.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bonnie May, assistant athletic director and “on land” regatta director; Karen Klinger, Smith’s rowing coach for helping us organize and direct the “on water” regatta; Abe Osheyack, sports information director, and Carly Gettler, graduate assistant, for their work preparing the program, and all our many rowing community volunteers. Without all of you working together, we would struggle to run a class event.
Welcome to Smith College and to Northampton. We have much to offer and hope that you take time to explore our campus and community.
Best Wishes,
Lynn OberbilligDirector of Athletics

Seven
Sisters History
In November 1980, Barnard hosted Bryn Mawr, New Rochelle, and Vassar in a four team basketball tournament, won by New Rochelle. Following the tournament, the original Seven Sisters institutions—Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Smith, Vassar, and Wellesley—joined to conduct championships in common sports. Radcliffe (now Harvard in the athletic arena) was invited but opted not to join, and Barnard (now competing as Columbia) was unable participate in all championships. Without Radcliffe and Barnard, only five of the original Seven Sisters remained. Haverford and Swarthmore were invited to join the championships as cousins, and depending on the tournament, several other schools have been invited to compete, including: Agnes Scott, Haverford, Swarthmore, Simmons and Elms. Seven Sisters Tournaments are currently held in volleyball, crew, cross country, squash, swimming and diving and tennis.
