Ranger Buddy Competitors,

To keep this competition focused on distinguishing the BEST Ranger Buddy Teams in Army ROTC, we have created this list of Tasks and corresponding Task, Conditions and Standards. This packet will help focus ROTC programs on what they need to train on to be successful in the 2015 Ranger Buddy Competition. TaskPerform a Litter Carry.

ConditionsGiven a simulated casualty and a litter, transport the casualty a specified distance utilizing the two man litter carry

Standards1. Place the casualty on litter face up 2. Both team members face the same direction and stand up in

unison3. The casualty is carried feet first to designated area.

TaskApply a field dressing or a pressure dressing as needed to a wound on a casualty's limb and treat for shock

ConditionsGiven a simulated casualty with bleeding from a limb and needed supplies.

StandardsCorrectly apply the proper dressing as needed to stop external bleeding and treat for shock. See FM 21-11 and FM 4-25.11 for examples. If competitors fail to apply a proper dressing the competitors will have to untie and retie the dressing until they achieve success or the 2 minute time limit has expired.

TaskNegotiate an Obstacle

ConditionsGiven a low wire obstacle

StandardsBoth team members must successfully crawl under a low wire obstacle wearing an ACH, gloves, PPE, and carrying a litter with a casualty approximately 50-75 meters until reaching the other side of the obstacle. Results based, technique will not be graded.

TaskRequest medical evacuation(9 line).

ConditionsYou have a casualty requiring medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), a patient pickup site, a 9 line MEDEVAC request format and all required information

Standards Assemble the information in the proper format and transmit a MEDEVAC request, providing all necessary information in 45 seconds. Soldiers will be allowed two attempts in a 90 second time period

Task Correctly tie 1 of 7 knots to be determined by the grader.

Conditions Buddy teams will be given 1 swiss seat rope and tasked to tie 1 of 7 knots to be determined by the grader. The specified knot will be tied on a suspended rope between two trees.

Standards Buddy Teams will arrive at Knots Station where a rope will be suspended between two trees. The team will correctly tie 1 of 7 knots on the rope to include a safety knot. Complete as quickly as possible but have a max of 2:00 min at station. Ref FM 3-05.70, 17 May 2002, figures G-4, G-6, G-7, G-8, G-9, G- 12, G-13, pages G-4 – G-8

MemoryIdentification

TaskCorrectly identify a misplaced object prior to completion of the lane

ConditionsEach buddy team will be given 1:00 min prior to the start of the lane to memorize 10 objects and later required to correctly identify the misplaced object prior to the completion of the lane.

StandardsEach buddy team will be given 1:00 min prior to the start of the lane to memorize 10 objects. Grader will be stationed at memory identification and allow team 2:00 min to correctly identify misplaced object.

TaskDestroy Targets w/ M4 (Paintball) using Target Discrimination

ConditionsGiven a Paintball M4, with appropriate ammunition (pre-loaded), two Enemy (Red), and two Friendly (Green) targets

StandardsCorrectly identify Enemy Targets and Destroy the two targets using the Paintball M4 Weapon System.

*Teams will not move on until all Enemy Targets are Successfully Destroyed.

TaskSet up a landing zone using the NATO “T” or Inverted “Y” method.

ConditionsGiven 5 flashlight stakes and one measuring string.

StandardsCorrectly set up a landing zone utilizing the NATO “T” or Inverted “Y” method design for MEDEVAC pickup. If the competitors fail to properly set up an authorized landing zone, they will be given additional attempts until they are successful or 2 minutes has elapsed.

TaskDestroy Target with Tomahawk

ConditionsGiven a choice of two distances, one designated Target and one Tomahawk per competitor

StandardsSuccessfully Destroy the designated target with the Tomahawk.

*NOTE: Each team member will be provided an attempt at destroying the target. Failure to hit the target will result in a 10M movement to retrieve another tomahawk. After a hit or three attempts, Cadets will be instructed to move to the next task.

TaskDestroy targets w/ M4 (Air Soft)

ConditionsGiven an Air Soft M4, with appropriate ammunition (pre-loaded), cadets will engage enemy targets until all targets have been hit.

StandardsCorrectly identify Enemy Targets and Destroy each target by hitting a paper plate fixed to each E-Type Silhouette using an Air Soft M4 Weapon System.

*Teams will not move on until all Enemy Targets are Successfully Destroyed.

TaskFireman’s Carry.

ConditionsTransport a simulated casualty a specified distance utilizing the Fireman’s Carry.

Standards1. Kneel at the casualty's uninjured side.2. Place casualty's arms above the head.3. Cross the ankle on the injured side over the opposite ankle.4. Place one of your hands on the shoulder farther from you and your other hand on his hip or thigh.5. Roll the casualty toward you onto his abdomen.6. Straddle the casualty.7. Place your hands under the casualty's chest and lock them together.8. Lift the casualty to his knees as you move backward.9. Continue to move backward, thus straightening the casualty's legs and locking the knees.10. Walk forward, bringing the casualty to a standing position but tilted slightly backward to prevent the knees from buckling.11. Maintain constant support of the casualty with one arm. Free your other arm, quickly grasp his wrist, and raise the arm high.12. Instantly pass your head under the casualty's raised arm, releasing it as you pass under it.

Standards continued13. Move swiftly to face the casualty.14. Secure your arms around his waist.15. Immediately place your foot between his feet and spread them (approximately 6 to 8 inches apart).16. Again grasp the casualty's wrist and raise the arm high above your head.17. Bend down and pull the casualty's arm over and down your shoulder bringing his body across your shoulders. At the same time pass your arm between the legs.18. Grasp the casualty's wrist with one hand while placing your other hand on your knee for support.19. Rise with the casualty correctly positioned.

TaskPerform a function check on an M16 series rifle or M4 carbine

series.

CONDITIONSGiven an assembled M16 series rifle or M4 carbine on safe.TEST STANDARDS 1. Place the selector lever on safe. If the selector switch will not

go on safe, pull the charging handle to the rear and release. Place the selector lever on safe. Pull the trigger to the rear, the hammer should not fall.

2. Place the selector lever on semi. Pull the trigger to the rear and hold. The hammer should fall. While holding the trigger to the rear, pull the charging handle to the rear and release. Release the trigger and pull it to the rear again. The hammer should fall.

3. Place the selector lever on burst. Pull the charging handle to the rear and release. Pull the trigger to the rear and hold. The hammer should fall. While holding the trigger to the rear, pull the charging handle to the rear three times and release. Release the trigger and pull it to the rear again. The hammer should fall.

TaskStudy High Value Target (1) and Cross a One Rope Bridge

ConditionsGiven one HVT and a stationary rope bridge using a 1 ¼”- 2” rope stretching approximately 20’-30’.

StandardsBoth team will be given a maximum of 45 seconds to study the HVT, then members must traverse a one rope bridge and ring a bell at the other end of the rope bridge while still being suspended. If a team member or any part of their equipment touches the ground before completing the task, that team member will have to start over. Maximum time to complete is 2:00 before moving on to the next task.

TaskStudy HVT (2) and Negotiate an Obstacle

ConditionsGiven one HVT and a low wire obstacle.

StandardsBoth team members will be given a maximum of 45 seconds to study the HVT, then they must successfully crawl while maintaining their rifle (rubber duck) under a low wire obstacle approximately 20-50 meters until reaching the other side of the obstacle. TaskStudy HVT (3) and Negotiate a Balance Beam

ConditionsGiven one HVT, balance beam approximately 4”x16’, two 5 gallon water jugs, and 2 rifles (rubber ducks).

StandardsTeam members will be given a maximum of 45 seconds to study the HVT, then they must successfully move two 5 gallon water jugs across a balance beam while maintaining all their equipment. If at any time a team member or any of their equipment touches the ground, that member must go back to the beginning of that particular obstacle. A maximum of 2 attempts per obstacle is given or a total of 2:00 before moving on to the next task.

TaskCorrectly Identify 3 High Value Targets (HVT).

ConditionsGiven 3 targets (one per obstacle and 45 seconds to review each target).StandardsBoth team members will be given a maximum of 45 seconds at the beginning of each obstacle to study 1 HVT (3 HVTs total). Team members do not have to utilize the total 45 seconds given. Once the team has arrived at the 4th obstacle they must high crawl approximately 15 meters uphill to the observation point and correctly identify 3 HVTs out of 10 possible targets. If the team fails to correctly identify the HVTs they will high crawl to the bottom of the hill where they will be shown all 3 HVTs for a maximum of 15 seconds and attempt the task again. A maximum of 2 attempts will be given or a total of 2:00 before moving on to the next task.

TaskBuddy Rush

ConditionsMove a specified distance utilizing the buddy rush technique.

Standards1. Start from the prone position.2. Select your next position by slowly raising your head.3. Lower your head while drawing your arms into your body, keeping your elbows down, and pulling your right leg forward.4. Raise your body in one movement by straightening your arms.5. Spring to your feet, stepping off with either foot.6. Run to the next position-- (a) Keeping the distance short to avoid accurate enemy fire. (b)Stay up any longer than 3 to 5 seconds.7. Plant both feet just before hitting the ground.8. Fall forward by: (a) Breaking your fall with the butt of your weapon.9. Assume a prone firing position.10. Cover your buddy's movement with fire.

ConditionsSquad receives fire from an enemy bunker while moving as part of a larger force.

Standards1. The squad destroys the designated bunker by killing, capturing,

or forcing the withdrawal of enemy personnel in the bunker.2. The squad maintains sufficient fighting force to defeat the

enemy’s counterattack and continue operations.3. No fratricide.

*Teams missing the target will be required to crawl to a supply point to get an additional grenade in order to re-engage the target
