About Us
INTRODUCTION
9-11 November
Helsinki’s new Ring Rail Line officially began operating on 1st of July 2015 connecting the capital’s main airport with Helsinki and the city of Vantaa.
Construction of the €774 million Ring Rail Line began in 2009. The costs were shared among the Finnish Transport Agency, the City of Vantaa, and the national airport operator Finavia. The project also received support from the EU.
The project involved building 18 kilometres of new track, 8 kilometres of which is in a tunnel. Five new stations - Vehkala, Kivistö, Aviapolis, Airport and Leinelä – connected two existing railway lines creating a loop between the Helsinki city and the Airport.
WHY HELSINKI?
Several new areas for housing, work, and recreation will be built along the Ring Rail Line.
The trains run at 10 min intervals to both directions stopping at all stations along the route. Aviapolis station marks the mid-point of the line with approximately 30min journey times to Helsinki Central Station from both directions.
There is only a short walk and escalator/elevator connection to the airport terminals from the train station. The walking distance is about 300 metres to both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Tickets can be purchased at the airport just before entering the railway station, but are also available on each of the stations and on board of trains.
Trains operating on the Ring Rail Line are the new Sm5 type easy access low-floor trains (so called “Flirt” trains) that also run on other rail lines in Helsinki.
Rail links to airports act as a lifeline to the city and the airport, connecting businesses, visitors and residents to a
major national and international gateway

GLOBAL AIRRAIL AWARDS
The Global AirRail Awards is an annual programme, built to recognise the effort, best practices and results of the global air-rail community.
Connecting a railway station with an airport, bringing airport amenities to the city rail terminal, providing joint passenger information or seamless airline/railway journey planning and booking – all this seamless air and rail integration requires close cooperation, transparent communication with stakeholders and an open mind for innovation.
The Global AirRail Awards judges are professionals in the air and rail industries. They evaluate entries from all around the world in number of categories and elect the winners with the highest scores in service to customers, business results, innovation, communication, cooperation and other selected criteria.
The winners are then named in a gala dinner and ceremony, taking place during the Global AirRail Conference.
The GARA 2016 evening will take place on Thursday 10th November, after the conference sessions. It is a Black Tie dinner plus awards ceremony.
