The School of Canine Science is Nando Brown and Jo-Rosie Haffenden. Formerly the Head of Training and Head of Behaviour for the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and the stars of Channel 4 series Rescue Dog to Super Dog.

Not content with being ace presenters and offering a tease of topics, the pair decided it was time to work independently and to provide a complete range of innovative courses including superb material, practical application as well packs for participants to take away and work from.

EVOLVE: Every participant comes from a place of previous knowledge and experience. The School of Canine Science looks to help participants evolve - that is to develop and enhance their existing knowledge into something they can sell professionally. This includes updating old theories with the latest science as well as ensuring participants know all the facts.

INSPIRE: Nando and Jo are both extremely exciting and bold presenters known for their work on channel 4 as well as their internationally successful seminars. But the School of Canine Science is also about teaching participants to inspire their clients. Carefully selected exercises and explanations are taught to ensure participants know how to apply the theory and get their clients inspired to work with their dogs.

THRIVE: The School of Canine Science wants all our students to have evolved knowledge and inspiring practical skills. Ultimately our job is to ensure your business thrives.

Courses are handling, non handling and sometimes a mix of both. Ensure you know which type of course you are booking prior to committing to dates.

Venues for non handling courses: We come with our own projector, speaker and screen but will need a warm and dry room with access to tables and chairs. The room needs to either have sufficient blinds or else not be too light so as to ensure everyone will be able to see the screen. If you are booking for a dog training facility make sure there is electricity. Access to water, coffees, teas and snacks should be provided by the host as well as lunch if stated. If no lunch is provided then the host should ensure the participants have somewhere to go to get lunch near by and that snacks are present. If the indoor venue is off limits for dogs then we can only run our one day courses, please ensure we know about it prior to booking.

Handling courses and bolt on practical days: Venues for practical work can be indoor or outdoor although for certain courses Indoor venues will need to have plenty of space for dogs as well as for handlers and spectators. We will bring all needed equipment with us along (unless stated) should the venue not be able to provide these. Outdoor spaces need an indoor or covered option if poor weather needs to be considered.

Handling and non handling courses: Courses which enjoy a mix of theory and practical will need two accessible spaces or one space that works for both. If an indoor training facility can also facilitate a projector and screen etc then this is perfect. If we are teaching in a different space than we are practicing please ensure that they are close enough so that on some days we are able to do a morning of teaching and an afternoon of practice.

Jo-Rosie is an animal behaviourist who, after completing a degree in applied psychology and a post graduate in behaviour, worked for a large rescue organisation. After moving into a private behaviour clinic and working mainly with section 1 and 3 dangerous dogs, she became an independent expert witness and then went to work for herself. Jo-Rosie set up a Sussex based behaviour and training company which is still thriving. Along with co-presents channel 4‘s Rescue Dogs to Super Dogs and ITV’s Teach My Pet To Do That, Jo-Rosie is an internationally published author of three training books.

Her passion for rescue dogs and in particular Pit Bull Terriers, has lead her to be one of the countries leading experts on the breed and as such she has been asked to talk on mainstream national TV, international and local radio as well as write for National and local papers on the subject.

In 2015 Jo-Rosie has enjoyed her role as Head of Behaviour for the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers lecturing both in the UK and Internationally and writing the

level IV OCN assessment process for behaviourists. Since then Jo-Rosie and Nando have enjoyed writing their own courses and taking them across the world including speaking at large dog conferences in New Zealand, across America and in Europe. Jo-Rosie and Nando have also written courses and undertaken training for the staff in large scale rescue organisations including Battersea Cats and Dogs Home.

Details: Why do dogs pull on the lead or refrain from coming back when you call them? Sometimes this lack of focus can be due to problems with motivation, or as a result of the dog becoming distracted; sometimes it is an arousal issue or a learned behaviour.

This fun-filled two day workshop covers everything you need to know about teaching a dog to return when called and to walk nicely on a lead. Getting these two behaviours perfectly on cue is the cornerstone to most training businesses. All owners require a stable and immediate recall away from distractions, and having a dog that pulls on the lead can be the beginning of a relationship breakdown for many.

Along with looking at why this problem occurs so frequently and the prevention strategies we can put in place to stop the problems arising in the first place, Nando walks groups of handlers through the best ways to train dogs who have a problem with these two basic and foundation behaviours.

Details:.This introduction course is an entry level course for anyone who hopes to train their dog up to track on hard surface. We work with dogs of varying experience and come up with plans, training solutions and ideas for owners to take away. The ultimate in urban tracking this course teaches dogs to drop their head and use their nose to track people and find articles on asphalt, concrete, pavement and other hard surfaces. This provides urban dog owners with an excellent way to work their dogs mind, body and nose through their local area.

We work on the basis that you teach grass last, and so hard surface tracking is the ideal way to learn modern techniques which will cannonball you and your dog into a tracking career.

Details: Behaviourism 101 is a complete one day introduction to how dogs learn within the framework of this discipline. There is no doubt that the cornerstones of practical canine training has evolved as a result of the hypothesis’ tried and tested within this paradigm. Without understand behaviourism it’s almost impossible for trainers to know where to start.

However, so much of this field has been dumbed down over the years that myths such as Pavlov using a bell; and Skinner placing his operant diagnostic tools into a quadrant have become commonly held views upon which practice is placed. This causes commotion and chaos as well as poor training practice.

Learn about the key concepts in animal training, the major experiments in behaviourism and learn the terminology to ensure your practice is purely science-based

Details: Scent work is a brilliant ways to make busy dogs tired and teach super smart dogs new skills. Perfect for anyone with a dog - from owners wanting to spice up the life of elderly pets; to troublesome puppies needing somewhere to focus their growing brains: all dogs, no matter how big or small, old or new - this is a great way to bond and to try something a little bit new.

This workshop focus’s on scent detection and teaches trainers using a formal training plan.

The fun starts with teaching dogs to go under, on and through to find beloved items and culminates in owners teaching their dogs to find an item of their choice (common choices are phones, keys and purses!). With the addition of some exciting equipment and ball pits - fun scent work is a good day out for both owners and their dogs. This sort of workshop is brilliant if your client-base is owners who just want to learn something fun and cool (finding pound notes on cue is definitely cool) without the pressures of tickets, competitions and judges.

Trainers will receive a support pack afterwards to include a summery of games as well as a fun scent work workshop lesson plan.

Presenters: Jo-Rosie Haffenden Duration: Conference or Evening event talkType of course: Non-handler talk

Details: This talk aims to provide a behavioural insight as to why and how Breed Specific Legislation is failing to keep the public safe.

The talk includes a look at the legislation as well as a practical analysis of how the law works in practice including how it effects legislators, dog professionals and dog owners on a day-to-day basis. Moreover it looks at dog behaviour in view of the statistical evidence. Why do some dogs in certain circumstances appear more likely to bite? Why is it that one breed is responsible for more than half the fatal dog attacks world wide in the last 10 years?

This talk covers specific training protocol which can be done to help prepare likely bully breeds for a successful exemption process and to reduce common breed specific training challenges.

The talk also covers a brief history of the pit bull terrier as well as an analysis of the legislation. We have a look at how to reduce risk using legislation and international laws.

Details: Separation Anxiety is one of the most common behaviour problems where help is sought by owners. This two day Separation Anxiety course looks through every important theoretical and practical aspect of the problem teaching instructors the skills and knowledge needed to take a case on through to completion and successful outcome. Details: Whilst dog bites are a huge problem for dog owners, there are plenty of sports and types of professional work that encourage dogs to bite including IPO, French Ring Sport, Belgium Ring Sport, KNPV, Working Trials Man Work and Mondioring as well as protection dogs, police dogs and security dogs. Trainers and behaviourists around the world debate whether it is actually possible to train this without increasing aggression or a dogs likelihood of biting. There is also some debate about whether or not it is possible to train this without using intimidation or fear-based methods.

This talk covers the following:

• A breakdown of bite work from a learning theory perspective • An overview of methodology posing the question: is it possible to teach

bite work without fear and intimidation? • A look at drives - including predatory drive; fight drive and defence drive:

what are these drives and do they exist • An evaluation of application and how science can be used to explore the

question: does bite work make my dog more likely to bite someone?

Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Nando BrownDuration: Conference or evening talk Type of course: Non handling talk

Details: We are very often asked about our dogs as well as our baby. When we met one of us lived with a very outgoing Dobeman and an extremely demanding Malinois; and the other lived with a very sweet Vizsla and a reactive, pushy pit bull terrier! We had to find a way to integrate four dogs, two of which who were extremely incompatible! Not only that but we then decided to add a human baby and second malinois to our pack!

This talk covers our process, our mistakes and our lessons learnt. We look at the science and statistics of multi dog households as well as myth bust. We look at House Rules (the ones we stuck to; and the ones we didn’t) along with giving a full overview of exactly how we integrated the dogs from their first scent/sight of one another all the way to the first time all four could be in a room together without a lead or muzzle.

The talk aims to give an overview of methodology, time frame and things to look out for when blending dog families.

Details: Resource aggression is one of the most severe and scary behaviour problems a pet dog owner can face. Often described as a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ the sight of bone or the approach of someone can turn a sweet and affectionate pet into a source of concern and worry for the whole family.

Information about how to change these dogs behaviour has been scant since Jean Donaldson published her book ‘mine’ 14 years ago in 2002. This course offers updated theories based on the most current research as well as a fresh perspective focusing on environmental psychology and pushing towards a practical application.

Presenter: Jo-Rosie Haffenden and Nando BrownDuration: Two day courseType of course: Non handling course with optional handling bolt on day

Details: All dogs have some form of predatory drive - that is to say they all originated from hunters and many of them are still selectively bred to hunt today. We use elements of the predatory motor pattern to get most natural working behaviours such as herding, guarding, tracking, stalking, flushing and biting. However, sometimes these behaviours can get dogs into trouble. From chasing cars, to stalking other dogs or herding children - many owners struggle to control their dogs predatory drive.

Day 1 looks at the science of predation - exploring how and why dogs use certain actions, how we breed for those behaviours as well as why some dogs drive to perform an element of the predatory motor pattern can get too much. We will look at the psychology of predatory behaviour as well as the neurobiological factors and delve into which dogs are statistically more likely to suffer and why.

Day 2 explores the practical application of all this theory. We cover how to assess this behaviour safely whilst minimising stress to the dog; how to set dogs up to succeed; client preparation; how to manage and control these desires realistically; as well as how we go about changing the dogs behaviour.

Bolt on day: The bolt on day will give people a chance to work with their own dogs if they struggle with predatory behaviours. Alternatively trainers and behaviourists are encouraged to bring a tricky client dog along to work. The focus will be on focus and impulse control along with chase recall and positive predatory interruption methods.

Each candidate will receive a support package afterwards which will include videos of suggested strategies as well as structured guidance for practice and communication.

Price: Spain hosted courses £1600
