Host Club to the 2021 Irish Amateur Open Championship Galway Golf Weekly Friday 11 th December, 2020 Dear Member, Welcome to this week’s issue of Galway Golf Weekly. Club Dining Room & Bar Takeaways are available from the dining room and hours of operation will be 9.30am – 6.30pm daily, reviewed weekly. The Club bar will be open from 1pm daily (3pm Tuesdays) and will close at approx. 8.30pm - reviewed weekly. Please support both the bar and dining room in the remaining weeks before Christmas – they both provide a safe and relaxing environment for you the members. Men’s Club Virtual AGM 2020 Well done to the Men’s club for a very smoothly run men’s club A.G.M. last Friday evening. 90 members were in attendance. Congratulations to the newly elected Officers & Committee for 2021. We all look forward to working with you in the coming year.   • Dining Room Credit Members are reminded that the dining room credit on their GUI Swipe cards should be used, if possible, by the end of December. You can use your current credit against take-away or eat-in meals. The dining room staff can check the credit left on your card at any time by request. An extension beyond December will be agreed by the new Club Council at their December meeting. Members Moving from Jnr. to Student/Renewing Student Membership in 2021 Please note that to avail of Student Membership for 2021 you must be registered as a full- time student at any Second or Third level Educational Institution and proof of college registration is required IN THE FORM OF A LETTER ON COLLEGE HEADED PAPER DATED AND STAMPED. We regret that we are unable to accept Student Identification Card or Proof of Fees Paid. The Subscription Fee cannot be taken by office staff without the above letter so to avoid embarrassment please do not ask to have it accepted pending letters arrival. No Exceptions to this Rule can be allowed.

  • Mass for the Deceased Members As it is not possible to hold the annual mass for the deceased members in the Clubhouse this year we have arranged for the deceased members to be remembered @ the 6pm mass on December 20th in Salthill Church. Members who wish to attend the mass must pre-book by contacting the parish office @ 091 523413 during normal office hours Monday – Friday. For those members not in a position to attend in person the mass will be live-streamed on the Salthill parish website @ http://www.salthillparish.ie/our-parish/webcam/

    The Knights Before Christmas Virtual Concert 'Hand in Hand, a national children's cancer charity, is delighted to have been chosen as the beneficiary of The Knights Before Christmas Virtual Concert 2020, with the A Capella Knights. This year’s concert will take place on Saturday 12th of December at 8pm, and all proceeds will go toward providing practical and emotional support to the families of children diagnosed with cancer throughout Ireland. This seasonal highlight will be broadcast from the beautiful Galway Cathedral, delivering the magic of Christmas directly to our homes. The A Capella Knights will be joined by Skehana Folk Group. Frenchville Brass Ensemble, Galway Sings, Renmore Pantomime, Hession School of Irish Dance and Galway Simon Music Project for this Christmas performance that promises to bring festive cheer at the end of what has been a challenging year. The charity aims to alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that is inherent with a diagnosis of childhood cancer. Covid-19 has had a major impact on the charity’s ability to fundraise and they are incredibly appreciative to be the chosen charity for this wonderful Christmas concert.     Clubhouse Access - Christmas The Clubhouse will be locked from 3.30pm on Christmas Eve until 7.00am on St. Stephen’s Morning. If you are planning to golf during these daylight hours then please ensure you have removed everything you need from the clubhouse in advance of 3.30pm Christmas Eve.

    Club Office Arrangements Christmas The Club Office will close on Tuesday December 22nd @ 5pm and will re-open open again on Monday Jan 4th @ 9.00am.

    Club Bar & Dining Room Arrangements Christmas The Club Bar will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and will re-open @ on St. Stephen’s Day @ 12 noon. The Dining Room will be closed Christmas Eve through St. Stephan’s Day re-opening on the 27th in the morning.

  • Stocking Fillers Club ties are available to purchase from the club bar costing €10.00 each. Galway GC special edition 125 Years Gin available from the Club bar in individually numbered bottles. Available to purchase by the bottle @ €35.00 including presentation bag. The gin was specially brewed by Ballykeefe Distillery in Kilkenny.

    Subscription Renewals - 2021 Following on from the changeover to the Club V1 Membership system earlier this year the invoices for your 2021 subscription fees will be emailed to all members on a date before Jan 1st. Those members who do hot have an email address listed will have theirs posted out as normal. Details in relation to how the 2021 fees can be paid will be contained in the renewal notice. Lift Break-Down The clubhouse lift is currently out of order and a part has had to be ordered in from the UK to repair same. Apologies for inconvenience caused. We will get it back up and running as soon as is possible. Got News?   • Local Winter Rules

    This time of the year, it is often necessary for clubs to introduce winter rules to create fair playing conditions and protect the course. Winter rules/Preferred lies can only be used in competitions when the committee have introduced

    and published a local rule in accordance with the Committee procedures from the R & A and CONGU.

    Rule 1. - Preferred Lie within 6” When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway

    height or less, the player may prefer the lie within 6 inches. Reference Point:

    Spot of the original ball. Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point:

    6 inches from the reference point, but with these limits: Limits on Location of Relief Area:

    Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and Must be in the general area.

    In proceeding under this Local Rule, the player must choose a spot to place the ball and use the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e.

    Rule 2 – Cleaning Ball When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area, but only

    where there is cut grass, the ball may be lifted, cleaned and placed without penalty. The player must mark the sport before lifting the ball and the ball and the ball must be replaced on its original spot.

    Penalty for Playing Ball from the Wrong Place in Breach of these local rules:

    General Penalty under Rule 14.7a

    Winter Rules Summary: Clean & Replace Throughout the General Area

    Clean & Place within 6” On Fairways Only. No Relief From Areas of Long Uncut Grass

    No Relief from under Trees where Grass doesn’t Grow.
