Experiential Learning

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOMYou’ll have numerous opportunities for hands-on experiences in hospitality management. Plan a themed dinner — including everything from menu development, budget, décor and invitations to staff training, contracts, and marketing and promotions—in HM 317, Introduction to Event Management. Your team will compete to execute the plan for actual guests.

The new Hotel and Conference Center on campus will provide an excellent training ground for students in the future.

Learn about the connections between the grape, soil and vine in the Napa and Sonoma Wine and Culture course. Meet winery owners and managers while learning about sustainability and tourism and how marketing strategies work nationally.

Attend the International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show (IHMRS) in New York City, which is the world’s largest showcase and exchange of industry products, trends and developments, attracting every segment and facet of the industry.

Student teams have also created event proposals and presented to the board at Hershey Destination Services in Pennsylvania. Students have represented the school at the Virginia Tourism Summit where they learned about the role of destination management in marketing the Virginia Hospitality Industry and they’ve traveled to Richmond, Va to take part in the lobbying process in the state legislature for the Hospitality Industry.

Each year, eight students have the opportunity to attend the California Pizza Kitchen Annual Conference. During the week, they work with an experienced event management company, all the while attending numerous professional development sessions. The students also partake in a day long community service event called Inspired Acts.
