A Caregiver’s Guide to the Dying Process

Many people who are caring for a terminally ill person have never done it before. A Caregiver’s Guide can serve as a sensitive, helpful resource for families who are being served by hospice. A Caregiver’s Guide to the Dying Process prepares caregivers by discussing both the physical symptoms of dying and the psychological issues that accompany the dying process. It may also be used by hospices and other end-of-life organizations as a helpful training aid for staff and volunteers.

A Guide for Recalling and Telling Your Life Story

This Guide is an award winning workbook designed to help a person tell his or her life story. Each page suggests a topic--such as Family, Adult Life, and Reflections--followed by space for you to fill it in. The questions can be helpful to the person sharing the memories, as well as provide other family members with a way to elicit stories and experiences.

The companion DVD (23 minutes) offers practical suggestions from hos-pice workers and patients on how to use The Guide as a tool to relive the experiences of growing up and growing older.

Underwritten by the John and Wauna Harman Foundation, the project uses PBS’s FRONTLINE film “Being Mortal,” based on the book of the same name by Atul Gawande, MD, to educate audiences and encourage people to take con-crete steps to identify and communicate their wishes for end-of-life care.

Selected sites will engage both medical professionals and the general public and will receive:◆ The “Being Mortal” DVD◆ Outreach tools◆ Audience materials◆ Discussion guides◆ Media support, and more

All program materials will be provided at no charge to selected host screening sites. HFA has limited financial aid available through the John and Wauna Harman Foundation to provide small grants to sites that demonstrate financial need to support the screening.

A TRILOGY OF PLAYS

"BEING MORTAL" PROJECT

Playwright Bryan Harnetiaux has written a trilogy of plays that provides a rich opportunity for self-examina-tion and community dialogue on fundamental questions surrounding death and dying. Told with humor and a keen understanding of the human condition, the plays are compelling dramas about families struggling to deal honestly with the everyday problems and mysteries of mortality. Plays can be used individually or in any combination by hospices, churches, medical schools, community groups and other organizations as an educational tool and as a vehicle for creating dialogue about end-of-life issues.
