Mission StatementHospice East Bay is committed to providing the hospice and palliative care services that support and comfort people and their loved ones through the final stages of life.

Cindy Hatton, President & CEO

In 2015, we took a trip to Paris for our Celebration of Care and had a very successful gala! Pauline Kaune, long-time hospice supporter, received the Sue Bruns Award for Philanthropy. We thank our sponsors and those who attended—a fun night (and the lights stayed on).

Our bridge program continues to grow, with 67 families receiving support for their children who are grieving.

We prepared for enactment of the End of Life Option Act and continue to educate our community about the benefits of hospice services.

Health care continues to evolve as we work with new partners across the continuum to care for our communities.

The hospice skill set is relevant across the entire spectrum of care, not just at the end of life. We have 39 years of experience utilizing an interdisciplinary team to develop a patient driven plan of care and provide support to our patients and their families.

Hospice East Bay at a Glance

Founded in 1977, Hospice East Bay has been privileged to serve more than 20,000 patients and their families. Care is provided in the patient’s home, which may be his or her own home, that of a friend or relative, or a skilled nursing, residential care, or assisted living facility—or our Bruns House inpatient home.

Honoring the needs and wishes of each patient and family, our care teams provide relief from pain and other symptoms, emotional and spiritual support, and assistance with practical end-of-life challenges as they arise. Team members

(primary care physician, hospice physician, registered nurse/case manager, medical social worker, home health aide, spiritual care and bereavement counselors, and trained volunteer) ensure that family members can confidently care for their loved one and understand the expected course of the illness. Bereavement support and counseling for patients and families begins with admission and continues for a year following the death of a patient.

Specialized programs include our Vigil Volunteer Program (ensuring no one dies alone) and The Bridge (grief counseling

for children/youths and their parents/guardians). Bruns House serves the needs of patients who require an in-patient level of care.

Our mission is to care for all medically qualified patients, regardless of their ability to pay. That is made possible by the generous support that our Foundation receives from the community in the form of individual donations, grants, bequests, thrift shop donations and purchases, and funds raised by community groups to benefit our hospice.

Bruns House

Bruns House, named in memory of George Bruns III, is a comfortable six bedroom former private residence. Bruns House is the only licensed inpatient hospice facility in the East Bay. At Bruns House, patients and their families experience the privacy and quiet of a private home while receiving the highest level of interdisciplinary care to address not only their physical but emotional and spiritual needs.

At the Bruns house families may choose to stay with their loved ones through the night, prepare and share meals for their family and friends and spend time in the lovely garden for quiet conversations, sharing memories or just enjoying some personal quiet time while walking the labyrinth.

In 2015, Bruns House provided 1479 days of care for over 261 patients and their families. Volunteers from various organizations donated their time and talents to spruce up our garden

amongst other projects that keeps Bruns House as beautiful inside and out in this quiet residential area. Hospice East Bay volunteers provided over 1570 hours supporting families with actions from simply making a cup of tea to sitting with their loved ones while they grabbed a relaxing meal without the worry of their loved one being alone. Our vigil volunteers spent countless hours sitting bedside, listening to life stories from patients and families as well as making sure that no patient died alone.

Bruns House has been the scene of many special moments for patients and families including marriage and citizenship ceremonies, visits from patient’s beloved pets to family reunions and treasured memorial services.

The personalized, respectful care is the ongoing hallmark of Bruns House and we are proud to offer it as an option for our patients, their loved ones and the communities we serve.

Volunteers from Wells Fargo helped out in our Bruns House garden.

As a not-for-profit organization, we are committed to providing free bereavement services, not only to the families of our patients but to our entire community. We offer traditional individual counseling as well as innovative programs for children, teens and adults which address the wide range of bereavement experiences.

Perhaps the greatest gift handed to us by the grief process is the opportunity to move forward into a new understanding of ourselves. When we emerge from grieving the loss of a loved one, we embrace our lives from a slightly different perspective. From this new vantage point we find ourselves re-engaging in ways we never expected or even thought possible. The process of grieving can be a time of rebirth, renewal and growth. Hospice East Bay continues to grow alongside the adults, children and teens we guide through their grief experience.

Here are some of the Bereavement Department’s accomplishments in 2015.

• Moved the Bridge Program offsite and began collaborating with the Hillcrest Community Congregational Church.

• Added a Pet Loss Support Group in partnership with the Animal Rescue Foundation.

Volunteer ProgramVolunteers founded Hospice East Bay in 1977 and remain valued, indispensable contributors to our success today. Amassing over 41,909 hours in 2015, more than 400 volunteers made significant contributions to our patients and their families, as well as our staff.

Office volunteers perform an array of important administrative tasks in our Pleasant Hill office. In 2015, these valuable volunteers logged almost 4,780 hours of service.

Thrift Shoppe volunteers sort, price, and sell donated merchandise, helping our retail operations remain an important source of funding for patient care and support. In 2015, these volunteers

contributed over 19,375 hours for our Thrift Shoppes.

Patient support volunteers, often referred to as the “heart of hospice,” are highly trained men and women who provide companionship and support to patients, offer respite time to caregivers, do light housekeeping, run errands, and provide transportation to medical appointments. Specialized patient support volunteers provide a variety of services: massage therapy, hair care, handyman work. They also sing at the bedside and deliver flowers for special occasions.

Patient volunteers spend time at our Bruns House as well where they serve as bedside companions and assist with administrative tasks; others contribute to making the garden a beautiful place for

patients and families to gather.

Newly offered in 2015, our Music and Memory program focuses on delivering personalized music to patients with moderate to severe dementia. A volunteer creates a personalized playlist, identified by a patient’s family members as significant in the patient’s life, load this playlist onto an iPod, and share this music with the patient.

During 2015, over 7,125 volunteer hours were given in direct service to patients and their families, while 4,825 patient visits were made. We are enormously grateful for the “heart” that all of these volunteers add to Hospice East Bay.

Bereavement volunteers help support family members for thirteen months following

the death of their loved one. 1004 hours were donated by bereavement volunteers to support hospice families through phone calls, home visits, and co-facilitation at support groups. Sixteen volunteers participated in the Bridge Program, our children’s grief program. These specially trained volunteers help children and teens through art, play, talk and peer support.

Vigil Volunteer ProgramWhen it is clear that a patient may likely be alone at end of life, either because family cannot be at the bedside or the patient does not have family, the RN Case Manager or Social Worker may request a Vigil when the patient transitions

Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting.

~ Mother Theresa

to actively dying. Due to the urgency of the request, the Volunteer Department immediately alerts Vigil Volunteers. Typically a Vigil Sitter is at the patient’s bedside within an hour. In 2015 the Volunteer Department fulfilled 24 Vigil requests.

All Vigil Volunteers have three hours of additional specialized training, during which they are taught the importance and process of being present, signs of approaching death, cross-cultural perspectives and words of comfort for family members who may be present. The training is taught by a Spiritual Care Counselor and a Registered Nurse. We ended the year with 86 trained Vigil Volunteers.

Sitting at the bedside of a patient in the final hours or days of his or her life is a great

honor. Often, patients are not conscious during this time and one might assume there is no benefit to having another person in the room. Our hospice staff feels this is a time when another human’s presence can be comforting, calming and supportive – thereby reducing fear and anxiety for the patient.

Vigil Volunteers often say they enter the room of a complete stranger and leave as a special and sacred visitor. Family members regularly comment that it was especially heartwarming for them to know that their loved one was cared for so lovingly.

Fund Development & Retail OperationsFunds raised by Hospice East Bay help us assure that no one is turned away because of their ability to pay for a variety of costs not covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal or private insurance.

In 2015, Hospice East Bay spent $87,000 on charity care, and an average cost of $388 per patient, per day on unreimbursed costs at Bruns House. The agency also had to make made significant capital improvements to the home office. Contributions from gifts and grants, brought revenue of $1,462,576 for 2015. The cost of raising these funds was below the national average for medical-related non-for-profit organizations. The five Thrift Shoppes generated $648,320 in net revenue to the agency. A significant percentage of fundraising revenue comes in the form of bequests.

Membership in the Legacy Society entails making provisions for posthumous gifts to Hospice East Bay. At the end of 2015, 103 households made up the Legacy Society: people who have con-firmed a gift commitment through the distribution of their estate.
