MESSAGEfrom the Chair and Executive Director

When you look back on years gone by, can you remember those special moments, or perhaps challenging times, and the steps it took to get to where you are today? In light of Rosedale Hospice’s 20th anniversary, we’ve taken a trip down memory lane. You’ll see a timeline that flows throughout this report, highlighting those special moments in Hospice Calgary’s development.

Hospice Calgary has always been responsive to the changing needs in our community. Back in 1980, people were hesitant to talk about issues related to end-of-life. A small group of committed volunteers from various backgrounds came together, formed Hospice Calgary, and began to educate the greater community. What started as courses and conferences, led to start-up funding for palliative care teams in the local hospitals, and eventually to Hospice Calgary’s Rosedale and Sage Centres that exist today.

We took time last year to review our past and think about what we needed to bring with us into the future. We asked tough questions about services we were providing—would they meet the needs of our changing community? How could we best provide support in a growing city and for an aging population? It was an exciting (and somewhat nerve-wracking!) process that resulted in a new strategic plan.

Hospice Calgary’s vision speaks to innovative, compas-sionate, and family-centred care—all of which continues to be at the heart of our new strategic plan. We know our current services are operating at capacity, particularly for young families seeking grief support. Where there is great demand, there is also opportunity. We are eager, and ready, to step into our future.

We realize that Hospice Calgary has a steadfast group of people surrounding it, and that you are part of that community. Thank you to all for helping Hospice Calgary provide services for over 4,200 people this past year. Together we have quite an impact!

With appreciation,

Kevin Barr, Board ChairSarah Walker, Executive Director

2015–2016 Children...Teens...Adults...Families

Through a Child’s Eyes

By Joan Cruickshank, R.N.Director of Hospice Care, Rosedale Hospice, 1996—2002

One little girl, we’ll call her Grace, loved visiting her grand-father during his time at Rosedale Hospice. She taught us much about what children need when a loved one is dying.

Grace was an outgoing child, mature beyond her years. She wanted to be involved in grandpa’s care and loved to fetch him juice or a warm blanket. Grace would sit by his bed, hold his hand and tell him how important he was and how much she loved him.

During this time, Grace was also part of our children’s grief support group. One day the coordinator told me, “Grace wants to know exactly what she is going to see in her grandfather’s body as he nears death.” When Grace returned to Rosedale, we went to the library to chat. I explained about the colour changes we would see in her grandpa’s skin and why these changes occur. We talked about his breathing and how he might gurgle a little, but that was okay because it happens when a body slows down.

We spoke about how he may not seem to know that she is nearby, but that he can hear and that her soothingvoice would be a comfort to him. When Grace had exhausted all her questions, I realized her fears were eased.

On grandpa’s last night, Grace did not want to go home. She wanted to be with him. She watched the skin colour changes, heard the gurgles and saw him slip into unconsciousness. Grace climbed into bed with her grandpa and he died in the comfort of her little arms. She was sad, but not frightened. She was prepared.

Grace phoned us the next day to thank us for caring for her grandpa. We thanked her for teaching us what love and caring are really about.
