Convoluted Technologies composite hose is manufactured in standard 25 metre long coils on our state of the art manufacturing line by winding a combination of reinforcing wires, fabric layers and special selection of barrier films around a solid mandrel from 1 inch to 4 inches diameter. Our composite hose assemblies range is suitable for hydrocarbon products, aromatic hydrocarbons, solvents, chemicals and cryogenic applications.

Hose materials and construction.Internal and external wires are made out of galvanized steel, stainless steel grade 316, polypropylene coated steel or aluminium. The internal wire purpose is to support the hose wall and prevent the hose collapsing under suction. The external wire gives the hose resistance to crush, seals the layers of fabrics and films tightly together and protects the hose from external abrasion. Both wires connected to the end connections will discharge static electric charge with the exception if one of the wires is polypropylene coated steel wire or if the end connection is made from nonconductive material.

Outer cover and identification strip. The outer cover can be made from two different materials depending on the purpose of the hose. It acts as pressure reinforcement, it protects the other materials from ultra violet rays, gives additional abrasion resistance and with different colour combinations between the outer cover and identification strip we are able to identify the different types of hose in a glance. As a special feature we can supply the hose with a reflective identification strip.

Inner materials.A combination of purposely selected films and fabrics make up the hose wall ensuring the tremendous range of chemical resistance, working temperatures and working pressures.

The majority of hydrocarbons found naturally occur in crude oil, where decomposed organic matter provides an abundance of carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons are one of the Earth’s most important energy resources. The predominant use of hydrocarbons is as a combustible fuel source. In their solid form, hydrocarbons take the form of asphalt.

The range of composite hose suitable for the safe handling and transfer of hydrocarbon products includes:

• Fuel Code 1000 is the most common transfer hose for road and rail tankers, storage tanks, production plant and equipment

• Fuel Code 1001 is used for the same applications as above but at a lower working pressure with a better flexibility characteristic

• Fuel Code 1003 is also used for the same applications as above but the aluminum inner wire gives it a lighter weight, low pressure good flexibility characteristic

• VRH 400 is our vapour recovery hose for hydrocarbon loading and unloading applications

• Fuel Code 901 is the most common transfer hose for fuel, heavy oils and lubricants in storage tanks, production equipment and ship to shore applications, this hose has a higher pressure rating

• Fuel Code 982 is a heavy duty oil transfer hose for ship to shore and dock side applications

• Hot Products Code 966 is suitable for suction and delivery of hydrocarbon products such as tar and bitumen at an elevated temperature

Our composite hose developed for the aviation industry is suitable for the aromatic hydrocarbons present in Avgas or Jet A1 fuel. Fuel for piston engine powered aircraft is usually a high octane aviation gasoline known as Avgas, it has a low flash point to improve its ignition characteristics. Jet A1 fuel gets used in turbine engines, these engines handle fuel with higher flash point, which are less flammable and therefore safer to transport and handle.

The Aviation industry has developed special end connections to avoid mixing up the two different fuels. The Avgas and Jet A1 fuel are the most commercially common fuels in aviation industry but there are various other blends used such as Kerosene, JP-1, JP-2, JP-3(Mil-J 5624), JP-4(Mil-J 5624), JP-5 (Mil-J 5624), JP-6 (Mil-J 25656) and JP-x (Mil-F 25604). It is of most importance that the composite hose reinforcement wires are compatible with the product handled by the hose.

The range of composite hose suitable for the safe handling and transfer of aviation aromatic hydrocarbon products includes:

• Aviation 700 SG transfer hoses suitable for the suction and delivery of aviation fuels, constructed with a stainless steel inner and galvanized steel outer wire.

• Aviation 700 SS is used for the same applications but in this hose the inner and outer wire are stainless steel

• Aviation 400 AG is used for the same applications but at a lower working pressure with a better flexibility characteristic.

It is of great importance that the right hose is used for the right application in the chemical industry due to chemical compatibility of inner and outer reinforcing wires and the hose lining. We cover a tremendous range of products that can be transferred with our chemical composite hose, see our chemical resistance data to select the right inner and outer wire, and inner material for your application.

In your choice of end connections we recommend not to mix aluminium end connections with stainless steel inner wire or crimp ferrule due to the increased chance of electrolysis corrosion that occurs between dissimilar metals.

Cleaning of Composite hose assemblies in service:

Composite hoses in service should be cleaned after they have been used. The most appropriate method will depend on the media that has been transferred and the location where the hose has been used.

Cleaning methods can be flushing the hoses with clean fresh water, hot water not in excess of 80 degrees C, detergents and solvents at ambient temperature depending on the chemical compatibility of the hose assembly, compressed air and steam on open ended assemblies only, not exceeding the maximum working temperature of the composite hose assembly.

In all methods of cleaning it is most important that the hose gets sufficiently drained before and after the process to prevent any chemical reaction inside the hose that could affect any of the inner materials or lead to a poisonous reaction.

Pigging should never be used as a method of cleaning on any composite hose assembly as this will damage the hose.

During any cleaning operation, the composite hose assembly must be electrically earthed to avoid buildup of static charge.

Inspection recommendations The frequency of testing is as required by regulatory authorities, or, in the absence of such requirements, as advised by the manufacturer.

Convoluted recommend that all hoses are to be tested when new, and re-tested periodically as follows:

For AS 2683 Fuel Hoses:

Visual Check …….....................(every 3 months)

Electrical Continuity .............(every 6 months)

Hydrostatic Test ………...........(every 12 months)

For AS 2117 / AS 1869 / AS 1180 / IMO BCH:

All tests .………………...............(every 12 months)

Visual test look for: • Dents or kinks, none are allowed as the wire is part of the seal of the hose.

• Displacement of the reinforcing wires from their normal pitch.

• Corrosion to the inner and outer wire or end connections, the wrong materials might have been selected for the service of the hose.

• Abrasions to the outer wire.

• Physical condition of the outer cover and carcass generally.

• Functionality and condition of the end connections and seals.

• Evidence of leakage from the end connections.

Hoses with any significant defects mentioned in the above list should be retired from service. Light abrasion of the outer wire and cover is acceptable as long as the outer cover is not completely worn away.

31 | Composite Hose Catalogue

Electrical continuity test: • Make sure the hose is well drained and gas and vapour free.

• Lay the hose on an none conductive surface in a U shape, ends and hose not touching each other.

• Place the positive probe of the calibrated milli Ohm meter on one end connection and the negative probe of the calibrated milli Ohm meter on the other end connection. If the reading exceeds 1.25 times the original resistance marked on the ID plate or is higher than 1 Ohm per metre of hose then the hose should be retired out of service (AS1180 13C).

• Be aware of hose with polypropylene inner reinforcement wire or end connections for chemical applications, this hose has no conductivity reading and should only be used in applications where there is no risk of static electricity build-up.

• Be aware that stainless steel reinforcement wire has a higher conductivity reading than galvanized coated steel reinforcement wire therefore the Ohm reading per meter of hose is allowed to be 2 Ohm per meter of hose. There are chemical hoses out in the field with stainless inner wire and carbon steel outer wire that look the same as a similar hose with both wires stainless steel. Stainless steel is not magnetic so check the wires with a magnet if you are not sure.

• Hoses used on loading and unloading of petroleum products on road and rail applications should be fitted with special end connections where the inner and outer wire is positively secured to the end connections with grub screws, make sure this connection is in good order. These fittings are available from 2” to 4” in straight, 68 degree elbow and 90 degree elbow in aluminium, and one specialty 4” vapor lock connection.

Hydrostatic test: • Make sure the composite hose has passed the visual and electrical continuity test before starting the

hydrostatic test.

• Lay the hose in a straight line and allow for free movement under pressure.

• Blank off ends and fill the hose completely with clean water. Ensure trapped air is released by raising the end that is used to bleed the water.

• Pressurize the complete hose assembly with calibrated test equipment at 1.25 times the published manufacturers working pressure as per AS 2683 and AS 2117 or 1.5 times the published manufacturers working pressure as per IMO codes (ship to shore). Hold this pressure for 10 minutes while examining the assembly for leaks.

• Release the pressure and drain the hose thoroughly.

• If the hose has passed the hydrostatic test, the hose should again be tested for electrical continuity, when this test shows the same result as your earlier test you can re-certify the hose.

Note hoses with polypropylene end connections should not be tested higher than 750 kPa

It should be noted that composite hoses elongate under pressure, this is a standard feature of our product, and it cannot be taken as an indication of failure or used to assess the condition of the hose reinforcements.

Hoses must be correctly used and handled; this can have a significant effect on the durability of the product. To assure the maximum possible service life of the hose assembly follow these guidelines.

Hoses must be correctly supported during their operation; these supports should be designed so that the hose assembly never bends beyond the minimum bend radius from our technical specification sheets for each product.

Hoses should never be supported along their live length by a single rope. Slings, saddles or some other means of proper support must be used. The support must be wide enough to spread the load sufficiently so that the hose is not deformed in the area of support.

Never use hose unsupported

Always support hose near coupling

Support at fitting and protecting from edge

Incorrect installation can unduly stress hose assemblies leading to a shortened working life or premature failure.

• Flanged hose assemblies should ideally have one end fitted with a floating flange.

• Hose assemblies must not be twisted either on installation or in use.

• Hose assemblies subject to movement while operating should be installed in such a way that flexing occurs in the same plane.

• When installing hose assemblies, careful attention should be paid to minimum bend radii specifications.

DO’S• Support the hose near the end connections always maintaining horizontal plane.

• Support the hose using recommended hose supports throughout the balance of the length.

• Cushion the hose against sharp edges, dock edge, ships rail, etc.

• Cushion the hose when the application demands use of reciprocating machinery. It is recommended that all points of contact be cushioned to avoid potential damage due to the pulsating effect of reciprocating machinery.

DON’TS• Do not use the hose unsupported.

• Do not support the hose with a single rope.

• Do not allow the hose to hang unsupported between ship and quay.

Never use hose unsupported Always support with slings, never with single rope

Never support hose with single rope or over bend at fitting

Never let hose hang between quay

The following guide shows the suitability of composite hoses and end connections for use with various fluids. The information is based on the best available data. Recommendations are given only as a guide and apply only to the chemical compatibility of the hose, seals and end connection materials.

The description of a hose with end connections as “suitable” does not ensure that the hose complies with any regulations or operating requirements governing the handling of the chemicals or the use of the hose.

When selecting the right hose for your application you should also consider the temperature rating, minimum bend radius, pressure rating and combined weight of hose with fluid.

In your choice of end connections we recommend not to mix aluminium end connections with stainless steel inner wire or crimp ferrule due to the increased chance of electrolysis corrosion that occurs between dissimilar metals.

A hose conveying a chemical having an oxidizing effect should be checked for internal discolouration particularly if contamination is not permitted.

Convoluted Technologies Pty Ltd reserves the right to change specifications and ratings without notice.
