Soule Senior Programs for

Individuals at the GardenThe following programs are designed to enhance your visit, therapeutically, to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Programs held at the Garden run between 1 1/2 to 2 hours, unless otherwise noted. Light refreshments will be served.

To register for these programs, please fill out the individual program registration form on pages 11 and 12 and mail it to the address listed on the form.

Garden admission is free for those who enrolled in Therapeutic Horticulture Programs. Please bring your confirmation form with you the day of the class.

Top 10 Orchids for Your HomeGrowing orchids in our homes has become widely popular in the last several years because, although perceived exotic, most are inexpensive and easy to care for if one follows a few simple rules. This talk discusses one orchid hobbyist’s favorites and how to grow them in the home without a greenhouse or any special equipment. Take home an orchid for your home collection.

Sneak Peek at the Best New Plants for 2010Discover the best new plant introductions for Spring 2010 including a repeat blooming lilac, a pink Annabelle-type hydrangea, and all the new annual and perennial selections that will be hitting the greenhouse shelves this season.

She is the 2007 Green Profit Magazine Young Retailer Award winner and her garden center is recognized on Today’s Garden Center Magazine’s Revolutionary 100 List for the past three years. She is focused on community-oriented business practices and is involved in Habitat for Humanity, the Master Gardener program, and serves as president elect of the Landscape & Nursery Association of Greater St. Louis and a vice president of the Hort Co-op of Metro St. Louis.

Eat Smart-Be Active Series Eat Smart Be Active is a program that incorporates both nutrition information, based on the recommendations of MyPyramid, and physical activity. The lessons are highly interactive and include ample time for small and large group discussions. Food tastings and light physical activity are integrated into each lesson, creating a fun and informative learning environment.

Mary Wissmann, MS, RD, LD, is a registered and licensed dietitian in the state of Missouri with a master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences. She is the St. Louis County Nutrition and Health Education Specialist for the University of Missouri Extension, and specializes in teaching community programs about basic nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness. Her goal is to significantly improve the health and wellness of her clients through small, easy lifestyle changes.

Chris has his master’s degree in entomology and has described 16 new beetle species. Insects are a special interest of his, but he is fascinated by all living things.

Registration Procedures for Programs at the GardenIndividuals must register in advance to ensure placement on class roster. A confirmation for the classes you are enrolled in will be mailed or e-mailed to you.

PARTICIPANTS HAVE TWO OPTIONS FOR REGISTRATION.

OPTION 1: When registering for classes, send a separate check for each class. For example, if you register for 3 classes at $7 per class, three separate checks for $7 must be included. Your checks will be held 10 days prior to the date of the classes. If a class is full, you will be called to see if you want to be put on a waiting list or if you want your check returned.

NEW! OPTION 2: Pay with credit card by using the registration form on page 11. We accept MasterCard, Visa, or Discover. Credit card payments are only accepted by mail in registration. If a class is full, you will be called to see if you want to be put on a waiting list. You will only be charged for the classes you are registered for.

Cancellations & RefundsIf you need to cancel after you’ve registered, please call Carol at (314) 577-9506 as soon as possible.

For cancellations 10 or more business days prior to the class, a full refund will be issued. Depending on your method of payment, your check will be returned or a credit will be issued to your credit card.

Refunds cannot be issued for cancellations less than 10 business days or missed classes.

Many programs will allow you to send an alternate participant if you are unable to attend. Please call Carol at (314) 577-9506.

In the event that the Garden must cancel a class, you will be notified and receive a full refund.

Class credits will no longer be available. We will honor pre-existing class credits.

Register with a Friend!In order to provide a better chance of getting into a class with a friend, please mail your registration forms in the same envelope. We will do the best we can to accommodate these requests.

Groups at the Garden Therapeutic Horticulture Programs are designed to provide creative and stimulating activities to further enhance the physical, mental, and social lives of the participants. The mission is to enrich the lives of senior citizens and special needs populations, particularly those with limited resources and limited abilities, by sharing knowledge about and interacting with the diversity of life in our natural world.

Horticultural therapy (HT) is a process in which plants and gardening activities are used to improve the body, mind, and spirit. HT is effective and beneficial for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
