What is planting plan?• Possibly most important piece of plan package• Typically done after site plan approval• For some projects, a planting plan is all there is• Often accompanied by a plant legend/schedule

Planting Plan

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As shown here, a planting plan identifies the name and exact location of all the plants to be installed as part of the landscape project.

Planting Plan Conventions (one method)

nnecting line/arc

Quantity noted by this label

By J. Grogan Oct. 2015

Presenter
Presentation Notes
One of the more traditional methods for planting plan conventions is the labeling of each plant with a leader line, sometimes using a connecting arc, and a total next to each label indicating how many plants it is accounting for. Why do you think the connecting arcs and quantities are used? They are used to aid in counting and identifying plant locations, both for you and the contractor.

Plant Legend (Schedule)

By J. Grogan Oct. 2015

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Notice that the notes vary in their purpose, ranging from possible substitutions, to notes about a particular plant, to spacing of the plants for a groundcover.

How do we decide on specific plants?• Begin with more general ideas

• Based on initial client meeting• Also based on your expertise• Can talk to commercial nursery for ideas

• Specify plants that are available• Check local nursery inventory (landscapes unlimited, Emerisa

gardens, Gaddis)• Monrovia order option

• Get client’s feedback/buy-in on the plants before completing your plan• Proposed plant list or plant ‘look book’

Why’s and how’s of planting plans• What are the most important functions of the planting plan

and schedule?• To facilitate construction of the design as the designer (and client)

intended• To aid in estimating of costs by the contractor

• Plant material• Installation• Irrigation?

• To aid in laying out of the plant material prior to planting

Two main methods for planting plan• Labels and leader lines

• Could be botanical, common, or shortened letter codes• 6 letter and 4 letter most common• Arctostaphylos manzanita would be

• ARCMAN or ARMA
