Editorial
The square-format photograph has, for a long time now, oc-
cupied a very special place in the heart of many a Lomogra-
pher – mine included. There’s something very unique and
appealing about that square aesthetic – the compositions are
often simple but elegant. I think it’s fair to say that there’s defi-
nitely a distinctive dynamism and magic to square-format pho-
tography and that’s reflected in how strongly and passionately
people feel about it. This competition is not only an opportunity
to showcase some incredible photographs by some extremely
talented individuals, but perhaps more importantly, it also shows
that the heart of the ‘Square’ is beating stronger than ever!
But enough with the fancy words: When it comes to Lomography,
nobody really knows beforehand exactly how things should look
or why it is exactly that they choose this or any format – you just
enjoy allowing yourself to be surprised! That’s why the Lomogra-
pher loves to use a constantly changing range of cameras, films,
formats and sizes. It’s all there in the tenth Golden Rule of Lomo-
graphy, “Don’t Care about any Rules!”

Here we go. Selecting eight winners from the stacks of entries we received hasn’t been an easy task.We were pretty amazed by the quality of the stuff we got and also by the variety of the gear people use to create square images. Toy cameras, iPhones, Blads, digital cameras... I think it is fantastic, really.
Anyway, here are the eight photographers who are going to bag a Diana Mini, courtesy of Lomography and who’ll get their images printed in the forthcoming square book. Congrats guys and thanks to everyone! Finally I’d like to thank Lomography for supporting the Square project! You’re Ace!
Christophe Dillinger

BEN GALVIN
My friends are all having babies.Having children and surrounding myself with yet even more people was the furthest thing from my mind. I live in Madrid and share it with more than three million others, most of whom spent the first part of 2010 in the street endlessly celebrating. The World Cup, Gay Pride, Easter week, the list of fiestas goes on and on...I’m English, uptight and like being alone. I took my girlfriend away from her family celebrations and fled to the Outer Hebrides. We ran around on remote hilltops, danced hyste-rically along vast empty beaches and enjoyed being on own with nobody to bother us. A world without people, just what I’d wanted.Later on I visited my mother in my home town. She raised nine children, something that’s always amazed me. How could she cope with being constantly surrounded? How did she get through it and not go insane?Afterwards, I went to see my friends and their new fami-lies. I accompanied them everywhere and observed their screaming babies, hyperactive toddlers, day in day out of nappy changing, breast feeding and temper tantrums. I left them after a week, pretty certain of how much they envied my freedom to come and go as I pleased.I returned to Madrid, developed my photos, took one look at them...and realised how wrong I’d been about everything.
I don’t want to be alone.
m’a toujours soufflé. Comment a-t-elle pu tenir comme ca,
constemment entourée ? Comment a-t-elle réussi à ne pas
devenir folle ?

Tatie and Dudy live near me in Rennes. When I go and visit another one of my neighbours, it feels like Alice in Wonder-land. She says that she looks like Dalida, and she is always in the heart of the action. There, there is l’Atelier, I spotted it and had the desire to make of it a cinema studio for a day. We shot “Locked up”, a short film shown in October 2010 during a Kino evening (Kino is a collective of video direc-tors). It is my third short film this year, and the second with Greg: he was already the hero of the adaptation of “The story of Lapin Tur”. This year, I investigated the business side of photography, more exactly animated photography. I thus met The Projectionist’s Machine. I am starting tech-nical training for a diploma in media studies in November.
Fashion crisis is one of my areas of photographic research. I shoot what disputes the Establish-ment. The Supermarket trolley could enter this category: what will be left of La Vilaine in the XXth century?Coxerfly is a free fanzine I have co-created in 2008 and which died this year. Thanks to it I went to La Route du Rock again this year. This festival symbolises another of my passions: the music with saturation and tortured singing.
The tattooed man is one of my brothers, experi-menting with freedom by making the “peace and love” symbol fly. He lives in the East of France, like The guards of Avreuil. These chickens fina-lise my first series of photos with the theme “Orphean Bottles” which, once emptied of their contents, become orphan and run aground wit-hout any message.

ERIN WOODGATE
All shot using natural light with a Holga on 120 film.
This past year has been full of ups and downs and I have collected the objects that represent each ma-jor event, time, place or person who has sculpted the past year of my life.

Winter- A Canadian winter is VERY different to an Australian winter.
I always lived on the edge of loving and
hating every minute.
Hiver – L’hiver Cana-dien est TRÈS différent
de l’hiver Australien. Je suis toujours sur la sel-
lette, mi le détestant, mi l’adorant.
Kittens- My roomates found a cat on a balcony on New
Year and named her Juliet. In February she brought 4 cute
kittens into the world which will forever give me great
memories. On the same night Juliet brought them into the world my Romeo
came into mine.

Cuba- After only being together for two months with Cameron, we went on a package holiday to Cuba,
something I never thought I would do: I’m much more for hostels and exploring a new city every other day than
sitting in a pool with a swim up bar but I’m always up for new experiences.

Dress up parties- Every other weekend at Town-
house 10 there would be a party, and if I got my way it
would be a dress up party of some kind.
Graduation- Cameron gradua-ted with the highest honors
and even though I wasn’t with him to see him through his
degree I felt so much pride to see him up there getting it. It is
something I was never able to do because I left the country
before my graduation.
3838
Cameron- changed all of those plans.
And I couldn’t be happier.
Cameron changeat tous ces plans.
Et rien n’aurait pu me rendre plus
heureuse.
Canada Day- when this day came around I knew my time in Canada was drawing to a close.
The plan was to go to Europe and explore for the summer then
live and work in Ireland.
4040
My best friend and room-mate, one of the reasons I
moved back to Canada in the first place. These objects now
make me sad and happy. It seems it’s true what they
say, you shouldn’t live with best friends.
The countdown- We made every moment
count, no matter who it was with or where it was, we lived it large.
4141
Europe- I travelled with friends, family and alone through 5 countries in 3 months.
A lot of money has been taken out of the bank account and this is what I have to
show for it. It’s good that memories can’t all be objects because there wouldn’t be
enough room in the frame.
4242
New Home- Now in London, Ontario Canada living, working, loving.
Nouveau foyer – Je suis maintenant à Londres, Ontario, Canada, j’y vis,
j’y travaille, j’y aime.

FRANCES BEATTY
2010 felt like it should’ve been a big year. A good year. A big year.
And yet I find myself struggling to come up with something important to write about in my year in review. The truth is... it zipped by, and quietly. In fact, almost entirely without sound. There are boxes and boxes of photos by my feet which suggest I have been busy in 2010, and I suppose that’s true. Caught up in experimenting with the new Pola-roid film, mostly. I first fell in love with Polaroid because it was a contained and instantly tangible memory, but not wi-thout its flaws. Dreamy and nostalgic, it mimicked the way I imagined a real memory to be. One which I could hang on to, unlike the ones dissolving within me. With the new film, there are more flaws, and one such flaw is the attack of the killer crystals (which should probably be a 1980’s inspired b horror). I watched helplessly as my photos were eaten away by this chemical reaction. Instantly panicked, it took me a minute to realize... it was beautiful. Mirroring more closely the evolution and destruction of our own memories.
produits chimiques dissoudre mes photos.

1 She + The Sea = The perfect Summer. 2 I like older people. I want get to have the serenity that
they emit, even though their life is escaping. 3 Although everything is disordered, I always find the
way thanks to you. 4 Bikes are for summer, like ice cream or the sun cream
with coconut scented.
All these things can be used the rest of the year, but do not have the same meaning.
5 I never thought you were going to make me so happy. 6 Sometimes I feel like an animal, I love basic things
like eating or sleeping.
7 This year I plan to see the funny side to the dark side. 8 I want adventures like Don Quixote, and if I don’t have
them, i’ll imagine them like he does. 9 The butterfly Effect, you know.... 10 I can not live without the pretty things. 11 The most beautiful place in the world and I’ve been
there. 12 I can touch the sky with my camera. I can be a little
taller. 13 Yes, sometimes people have a heart of stone. 14 Women should rule the world.

I have spent this year totally under the sign of square.
That’s because this summer I finally bought an old Yashica Mat TLR from ebay and hit the road towards medium format wonders.
Next year will be “double square” I hope.
First is a short picture series that was shot on a single roll of film when I was once wondering around my fiancee’s hometown while visiting her parents. I did not do much thinking about what I was shooting and surely was not intending to make a picture series. But then I had got the film developed I noticed to myself that these at first glance very unlike pictures in some way make up a totally absurd series then put together. But I still had to fancy some description. And what could be better to describe an absurd series then some absurd poetry? And what can be more absurd then a dream? Especially a dog’s dream.
L’an prochain j’espère faire des « doubles car-
ensemble absurde.

The Dog’s Dream
The dog sleeps. So white he is.The not whole henJust standsAnd watches him. Silently she does. Not straightly down from the windowThe stairway black as mourning widowLeads. Dog sees again the stairs flightIn his tumultuous dream tonightThree candles overcome by drinkInside the window do not blinkAnd wax is covering the palmWhich was to pet and keep dog calm
There is a view among the upper classThat hen is totally made of brass.Yes, though a truly whole one.The white dog sleeps. And dreams of none.

This year was a pretty weird year, maybe too weird actually.
I split up with my girlfriend, I went to hospital, I moved house, I went back to live with my pa-rents... and then, depression.
Not wanting to get out of the house and feeling like death if you do. Waking up in the morning and wondering whether you’re going to get through the door or out of the window and so in doubt ending up staying in.
So of course I didn’t do much photography, the cameras were left in the cupboard and when I did use them, the result was not great anyway. I had always my phone on me though, with its camera setting and an application that was supposed to reproduce film photography. I must confess I wasn’t really following the debate about this: good, bad, copying film is the work of the Devil blah blah. For me, the low quality of the pictures, along with the digital imperfections the applica-tion added to them, kind of symbolised my vision of life at that time.
With a kind of journalistic drive, I would upload the images to my website, along with bits of texts. It was a kind of journal, an intimate diary open to everyone.
The images I have selected for this competition are not the most beautiful I have ever made, or the more artistic. Rather, they are a collection of moments I went through and I felt that through these images it is possible to understand what I was living, the low periods but also the times when I was happier...
But don’t worry too much guys, the story does have a happy ending and my rolleiflex is now out of its box.

ZÖE GRUSZECKYJ
It all began in May 2010 where I was given a Diana F+ camera and a roll of Fujifilm 400h for my 24th Birthday.
My first pictures were taken in the Jephson Gardens,
Leamington Spa, where my boyfriend and I chased pi-
geons, got lucky with a piece of graffiti and knitted Ste-
phen!
In June I went to a Monkey sanctuary where the best ‘ooh’
expression on a monkey was taken!
On a boiling hot 28th June 2010 I travelled to Barry Island
where my boyfriend ate A LOT of ice cream.
On the 1st of August I took myself and Diana on a 4 hour
train journey to Gateshead to see my best friend Marc, the
angel of Gateshead ;-)
The last pictures I have taken this year is of my weekend
in London, September 2010. I took Diana for a ride on the
London Eye and learnt all about evolution at the Natural
History Museum with Charles Darwin.
My year so far with Diana has been fantastic! I only hope
she can fit in my bag at the end of the year for when I go
to Lapland.
meilleur ami Marc, l’Ange Du Nord ;-)
