Greetings First UMC Friends and Family!
As I write this month’s newsletter article, we are in the midst of
a huge moment in United Methodist history. Last month, I put
together a series of emails updating everyone on the Special
Called General Conference that is meeting/has met in St.
Louis. I’ll plan on putting those emails on the church website
under the pastor’s blog heading.
I’ve spent some time this morning listening to the session taking
place and trying to follow along on Twitter. There are conversations going on about
amendments to amendments to plans that many do not like, and voting on whether or not
to vote, I am reminded of something very important: we are a vastly imperfect people,
trying to live out of imperfect systems, and we all need Jesus. To use a colloquialism I’ve
heard from a friend, “That dog won’t hunt.” The way we do things on a General Conference
level is flawed, and, ultimately, unhelpful in guiding us to fulfill our mission as a church.
I had a great conversation with the Faith Builders class this past Sunday. And during our
conversation, somebody asked me where I stand in all of this. So, let me share my answer
with you.
I believe that my call as a pastor is to do all I can to introduce people to Jesus and
challenge them to grow in their life of faith. Honestly, that is all I care about. You know how
I spend a lot of time talking about our mission as a church? My personal mission also takes
that kind of priority for me. It is my “why”. If I am to be faithful to my call as a pastor, then
what I need to do is introduce people to Jesus and challenge them to grow in their life of
faith.
By the time you read this message, General Conference will be over. The United Methodist
Church may look completely different one way or another as a denomination. But our
mission will be unchanged. We will continue to exist as a church that strives to “make
disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” I pray that you will join me in
this mission.
Peace, Pastor Matt 1
