Horizons India Conducts First Workshop on
Financial Literacy.
Horizons India (HI) is a student group from BITS Pilani Goa Campus that aims at
spreading financial literacy amongst the student community.
In August 2011, HI in association with SEBI and CDSL conducted its first workshop
- Finance Made Simple, at Cummins College Pune. The workshop had around 100
attendees from premier Engineering colleges in Pune like VIT, MIT, Cummins and
COEP.
The workshop was spread over 2 days comprising of four sessions spanning
various aspects of finance. Each session was delivered by different speakers with
expertise in the corresponding areas.

Inauguration
The workshop commenced with an opening ceremony with a welcome note for
the students. The speakers were then welcomed and honored, post which Team
Horizons India shared its story and spoke about its initiative.

Session One: Basics of Stock Market
Speaker: Shri Chandrasekhar Thakur
Head, Investor Education, CDSL
The 1st session began with Mr. Thakur introducing the students to stock
market, Demat account, and other basic fundamentals involved in stock market.
With his friendly, example oriented and pragmatic style of teaching, he was able
to connect to the students well. Mr. Thakur presented a lucid picture of the stock
market and the session concluded with a very active question answer session with
the audience.

for past 11 years. He has
worked in Mumbai Stock

32 years. He has conducted
over 694 Investor awareness
programs. He is Winner of

and has conducted a series of
10 live Dial-in programs on
All India Radio.

Session Two: Mutual Funds
Speaker: Ms. Kranti Patankar,
AGM, Investment Dept, SEBI
The session on Mutual Funds started with a brief about different secondary
market investments. It covered all the basics of investing in mutual funds.
Students actively participated in discussions and even got involved in topics like
Foreign exchange and US economy.

Session Three: Secondary Market Detail
Speaker: Mr. Gyanendra Neeraj,
AGM, SEBI
Day Two began with a small session by team HI where it
conducted a quiz to arouse interest among the students and impart additional
knowledge. It also solved doubts of students from the previous sessions and
otherwise.
Mr. Gyanendra then took over and explained about the Secondary Market and its
Regulations in detail. The session strengthened students’ knowledge base about
secondary market and gave them a good insight into SEBI as a regulatory body as
well.

Session Four: Financial Planning
Speaker: Mrs. Sareena P.U.,
AGM, Investor Awareness Division,
SEBI
The last session was on Importance of Financial Planning. Miss Sareena’s exclusive
style of giving real-life oriented examples was received very well by the attendees
and they could directly relate to the importance of Financial Planning in their
current lives and ahead. The session was very interactive and was thoroughly
enjoyed by the students.

Closing Ceremony
The workshop concluded with a small closing ceremony with a vote of thanks to
the speakers and the student ambassador team who made the workshop
possible.
Feedback was collected from all the students verbally as well as via feedback
forms. The students responded with a positive feedback; for some it was a
valuable addition to their existing knowledge base, for the others it was a new
concrete beginning.
