Our mission: Seeking God in our life together and enlivened by daily prayer, we, the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith, Arkansas, respond to the needs of the people of God in a spirit of hospitality, simplicity, and reverence for one another and all creation.

Charism Statement (excerpt): We, the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, have responded to a call to seek God by a total gift of self in a religious community of celibate women, who make profession to live the Gospel according to the Rule of Benedict, the norms of the Federation of St. Gertrude, and the norms of the Monastery. By professing stability and fidelity to the monastic way of life, we promise to be faithful to our Benedictine tradition of prayer, work, and leisure, and to be a Christian community where persons are reverenced in their uniqueness and diversity.

Spring is bringing her unhesitating brilliance to the world as we await the coming of Easter and our Lord Jesus in the glory of

the resurrection.

In John 20:1-9, we hear of Mary Magdalen, who in the darkness of early morning went to the place where Jesus was buried. She came to the tomb of her grief only to discover the grave was open. Imagine! What an unexpected thing to encounter. The Gospel says she ran back to the apostles. Peter and John, hearing the words of Mary Magdalen, ran. Peter hurried, and the apostle, the one whom Jesus loved, ran harder to pass him. Arriving at the open tomb before Peter, he stopped and did not go in. Peter, arriving after John, went in alone and found it as Mary Magdalen had said. The beloved disciple peered into the tomb and did not go in, he believed.

What are the dark places or tombs in life that need new light for you? What does it take to run on faith toward something that cannot be explained? Have you ever gone after something so fast and so furious, only to find it to be different than what you thought it would be?

Every person in the Gospel of John has one thing in common. They all went looking for something. They all searched. Each held various levels of faith, bewilderment, and uncertain hope. Easter calls us to keep searching, believing, and to continue running after the truths that life gives us, even when such experience does not make sense.

What does Easter bring for us now as we enter into a new season? May we run with expanded hearts, like St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, to love beyond our knowing, to give past our means, and engage in learning something new as Easter people. Run! Alleluia!

Everywhere I look, I sense the invisible and visible presence of Jesus at Hesychia. His Presence is always

elusive and alluring, and as I catch graced glimpses of His incarnations in my life, I ready my heart to move closer to Him, as He to me. In the silence He whispers his ancient wisdom in ever new stunning parables. I sense His Presence in the dew dripping off the blueberries sparkling in the sunlight. The mountains surrounding us with His strength hold and empower me. While picking the plump blackberries, my soul breaks free of lingering thorny dead branches that have pierced and grounded me down for too long. Two and three trees join as one with deep roots, rooting me more deeply to Jesus and into community. The wild, care-free, soul-strong, steady, purple flowers (some call them weeds) call me by name despite the freezing cold day, and remind me that no matter what, Jesus will overcome all cold heartedness.

I am called to resiliency and tenderness of heart--Mercy.

The cows instinctively call and answer each other across different pastures. Hearing them, I intuitively ask Jesus to help me distinguish His voice from the multitude of noises and other voices. What matters most is to be led by Him. These parables have graced me.

Refreshed, I reclaim my truest self, which had been in danger of being stifled. Reawakened, my most authentic self breaks free. With that freedom comes a continued call to conversion, setting my heart on fire to be more authentically the person God has created me to be.

Anointed in His Presence, perceptions change and clarity emerges. I continue to see anew who I am and whose I am, and am drawn ever more deeply into the heart of God and of God’s people.

Reflections from Hesychia

House of PrayerBy Sister Lisa Atkins, RSM

Winter months can be a time for creativity in the garden. At St. Scholastica Monastery these past few months, it just so happened that

such a need made itself known.

Years ago, seven Sorrowful Mother Stations were given to the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica by Servite Father James S. Doyle and blessed by Father Joseph Milan, Monastery Chaplain, on the same day that they were erected, June 13, 1947. They were mounted northwest of the cemetery, where they remained for almost 70 years.

Over the years, alterations were made. Mother Perpetua Gerard (St. Scholastica’s third Prioress, 1920-1947) had used jubilee money for the copper frames to make the glass-covered stations waterproof. Sister Roberta Hyland also did some of the design work.

Then on March 29, 2017, the Stations were removed when the blue prints for the new monastery indicated that they would need to be placed elsewhere. And for many years they were not displayed.

Thus the cold months this past winter became a time to challenge one of the yard employees to find a creative new home for these Stations.

When asked, Randall, a monastery employee, was ready to accept the challenge of finding the Stations a new home. He was assisted by Armando, a fellow groundskeeper, to find a place to repair them, clean them, and place them. Finding a location for mounting the Stations was the starting point for this adventure. Eventually, it was decided to place them on the south side of the cemetery, between spirea that had been planted in January, before the project started.

Randall has been an employee for many years and had the foresight to save some of the lumber from a demolished workshop located on the Fort Smith monastery grounds. Part of the lumber from this shop was from St. Joseph Academy in Shoal Creek (renamed St. Scholastica Academy in 1924 with the move to Fort Smith) when it was torn down due to the move to Fort Smith. Most of the wooden frame that Randall built for the Stations this January has been handed down from one building to another, and dates back to before 1920, over 100 years ago.

The cedar poles that now support the Stations were grown on Shoal Creek land, the original founding site of St. Scholastica Monastery, and recently brought to Fort Smith specifically for this project. The newly remodeled, smaller stations have found a place of honor facing the south side of the monastery cemetery.

Sister Pierre Vorster

Sister Pierre Vorster was born on March 18, 1922 in Subiaco, Arkansas. She currently serves as the Grounds Supervisor, Gardener, and Monastery Historian. Some of the community’s fondest memories are of watching her ride across the grounds on her Gater. The best way to describe her came from Sister Kimberly, “She’s just so smooth.”

A Sister of Service: Leona Marie Selig

She came to St. Scholastica Academy in 1948, when she was just 16 years old. Like many other girls who attended the school, Sister Leona Marie Selig discerned a call to become a sister and entered the monastery as a postulant after her sophomore year of high school. It was a decision through which she would fulfill a lifelong commitment to serve those around her.

Leona Marie was born in Tichner, Arkansas on July 10, 1933 to Frederick and Alpha Hibbard Selig, the second of three children. For many years the happy family of five enjoyed their time together. In 1942, when Leona Marie was nine-years-old, looked forward to the arrival of baby number four, Christina Carol. The pregnancy was celebrated as the family eagerly awaited the arrival of another girl. It was an exciting time, one that nobody thought would end in tragedy. Due to unforeseen complications, both mother and child died during or soon after the delivery. With their deaths Leona Marie’s life changed forever.

The loss was devastating for the Seligs. Yet for all the sadness engulfing nine-year-old Leona Marie, she quickly grew up and assumed a caretaker role to fill the huge void left by her mother. She watched over her father and brothers, and performed many household responsibilities.

Service and care became her vocations.

As a sister, Leona Marie became a nurse’s aide and continued her mission of service to others. She frequently worked in nursing homes and developed a knack for superb medical care that preserves the spiritual and physical dignity of the individual.

Sister Leona Marie’s father never remarried, and even after she became a fully-professed sister, she remained devoted to him. “Dad and my brothers were happy for me. In the ‘80s daddy’s hand was cut badly during a robbery. For a piano player, this was devastating. I moved to Stuttart and got a job at a nursing home so I could live with Daddy and care for him.”

Sister took care of her father, just as she did while growing up, until he died in 1987.

Sister Leona Marie worked for many more years after the passing of her father in various capacities in nursing homes. Then, in 2013, at the age of 80, she retired. Yet as a retired woman, Sister Leona Marie still finds ways to serve.

“I retired from nursing aide work at age 80. I still help with medical tasks around the monastery if Sister Barbara Bock is away. I like to volunteer for running the dish washer,” shares Sister Leona Marie.

Six times per week, she can be seen in the kitchen working with the staff to clean after meals. Every day of her life is filled with meeting the needs of and the service for others. She continues to be an individual of great strength and love, for St. Scholastica Monastery and beyond.

Thank you, Sister Leona Marie, for your service, for your care, and for your calling.

“I’m so grateful for the Cross in the chapel, the windows from the previous monastery, Sister Roberta’s plaques and other things from the building. I thank God for my vocation.”

Fiesta of Solidarity: A Benefit for Girls’ Education Matters

Once every year, the Fiesta of Solidarity takes place at a Fort Smith parish to celebrate Guatemalan culture and raise money for St. Scholastica’s

G.E.M. Scholarship Program. It’s an evening that marks the culmination of months of planning, countless collaborators, and a true spirit of solidarity. While it usually feels like it’s over in just one evening, the many people who make the evening (and the entire G.E.M. Scholarship Program) possible work diligently the entire year.

This year’s Fiesta took place at Christ the King Parish Hall. Volunteers began setting up silent auction items several days in advance. Truck after truck pulled into the parking lot with loads of gifts for the occasion. In total, over 100 items were donated for the Fiesta, many of which carried significant cultural and historical value. Additionally, items from Guatemala were on display and for sale to the many patrons in attendance.

Once the event was in full swing, it was a night like no other. Fun rang out of every performance just as solidarity rang from every statistic, putting the “why” of the night front and center. We were there to support our friends to the south, the girls in Guatemala, girls whose lives would likely be forecast in pain without the gift of education.

The girls’ successes were displayed in a power point presentation. To date, many girls have participated in the G.E.M. Scholarship Program. Ten have graduated, while the 30 currently enrolled students await the day when they walk across the stage. The schooling the girls receive at Colegio San Benito, the private Benedictine school in Esquipulas, Guatemala, not only provides the girls with a top-notch education, but it also instills a strong understanding of the social implications of their knowledge.

Padre Hugo, superintendent of the school, prays with the students, teachers, and staff daily, emphasizing the importance of bringing their gifts full circle to help those who are not as fortunate.

Now in its 8th year, the G.E.M. Scholarship Program continues to grow and show exponential gains to native Guatemalans and all those who stand in solidarity with them. Participating in the G.E.M. Scholarship Program or the Fiesta of Solidarity is an act that transcends our differences and brings us together just as it brings the students in Guatemala closer to a prosperous future. At the end of the day, we are all better off when we brighten the lives of others.

If you’d like to get involved with the G.E.M. Scholarship Program, please call Sister Rosalie Ruesewald or Kathy Jarvis, co-directors, at 479-739-1999.Volunteers getting ready for the big show.

In February, our kitchen staff surprised Sister Macrina with a shirt dedicated in her honor. It was a touching moment for which we are very grateful. The Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery would like to express our appreciation for all of our hard-working staff who continue to serve us diligently and lovingly. Housekeepers, Groundskeepers, IT Specialists, Nurses, Receptionists, and Financial Admins.,

way for lay men and women from any religious denomination to carry out the Benedictine Charism in their everyday lives. We meet monthly, engage in volunteer work, and embrace our common spirituality as inspired by the

Rule of St. Benedict. For information on becoming an Oblate, please call Sister Hilary at St. Scholastica.
