INDUCTION OF RESPECTABLECITIZENS AS ROTARIANS

Rtn. Paul Harris had said: “When you have seless love for your fellowmen in your heart, my friend you are a potential Rotarian!”

Rotary has brought people of diverse backgrounds together! And in doing so, it fostered better cultural understanding. In this way, Rotary was well ahead of its time. But then, it did overlook a major cultural group. Can anyone guess which one? WOMEN!

If today Men and Women are thought of as coming from different planet, in 1905, they might as well have been from different universes. But, now we have come a long way and women are now a very much integral to the Rotary movement.

No Installation Ceremony is complete without inducting compassionate citizens from the Community around us as New Rotarians, Our RCBK Family grew by a whopping 25% - an encouragingly good size. As many as 11 new Members were inducted into the Rotary Club during Installation.

Here’s an Introduction of our newest Members. Each one was invited – along with their Family - to the dais to get themselves pinned by the highest Official of the District – the Governor himself! DGE RTN AJAY GUPTA pinned each of them and then a commonoath was administered!

A THOROUGHLY INSPIRING SPEECH BY DG RTN. AJAY GUPTA

The suave and somber DISTRICT GOVERNOR RTN AJAY GUPTA was extremely excited with his own presence at PRESIDENT RTN ANUJ AJMERA & his team’s INSTALLATION CEREMONIES, but he didn’t show it – he demonstrated it in his rousing speech! What an example of a rationally thinking and logically thinking District Governor of the world’s single largest Rotary District – a class apart!DG RTN AJAY GUPTA was unabashed when he said that he requires more heads, and twice as many hands to make RI Dist 3140 also the world’s best!

AN IMPRESSIVE CALENDAR OF EVENTSHe declared confidently, “Yes, indeed! We are the World’s Best!” The DG complimented President Rtn Anuj Ajmera for having developed a well planned Calendar of Events and A c t i v i t i e s , p r e s e n t e d c o l o u r f u l l y a n d attractively, for month after month of ongoing activities, “in the form of a well thought out document” offered to him as a commitment of all that the Club Team plan to accomplish during the forthcoming year!He was also equally sure of the capabilities of the RCBK team, and said that there would be scores of other thoughts and services that the Club can and wants to do, but did not include them in this Calendar!

THRUST AREAS Among the Thrust Areas of the District that

the Club has thoughtfully included in the plans are a Literacy-cum- Education Project, the “SCHOOL ON WHEELS” that has been the signature Project of the Club for the past few years – such a well-conceived idea and so well implemented!

Another Thrust Area is making potable water available to numerous people in the interiors of our state. This is, in fact, an urgent need and an absolute necessity! He was sure that the Club would rise up to the need and make concerted efforts at providing needy villagers with adequate and hygienic potable water!

Yet another Thrust Area is the need for systematic and hygienic Sanitation! especially for the girl child and the women - folk of our village and town!

And so is the need to provide our able-bodied senior citizens with an environment (ABCDE) that enables them age gracefully, with a peace of mind of having accomplished all that they aspired for in their lives and having provided the most for the upcoming generation!

No amount of stress is adequate when we think and plan for Schools for the Special Child in our Community!

While strategizing useful contributions in each of these Thrust Areas, what is important is to be able to not only think, plan and implement these projects, but to enable sustain them economically for long durations, much after we are done and gone. In the process, let’s look at doing big and impactful projects around the Community where we live, work and progress.

GET NOTICED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICESThe DG also sought to advise the impressive audience, in his inimitable style, to engage the District in the various Services that we as a Club conceptualise, plan and perform! Let the whole Community notice and appreciate all that we do

together with them, responding to their needs and making life worth living for all!

Let each of our Services be provided to the Community together

with at least in 14 weeks of sustained, concerted effort! Let the media notice what we have achieved these 14 weeks! Let’s think differently - to make things happen differently - and

serving and servicing the Community. The DG recounted humorously about the wit of Gandhiji while thinking differently while performing amazingly! The audience was in splits at each wit that was fondly remembered!

COMMENDATIONS AND RECOGNITIONSThe DG motivated Rotarians with his views on positive results that would come as we resolutely do what we always wanted to do!DG went on to recognise the numerous District Officials who were present on the occasion to eke Rtn Anuj on to perform as excellently as them, if not better!

To do that PRESIDENT RTN ANUJ AJMERA could well have a second in command, who could take on a lot of load while sharing

leadership of Community-focused services from the Club that has almost unlimited potential!

The DG went on to present PRESIDENT RTN ANUJ AJMERA with mementos and Certificate f o r c o m m e n d a b l e p e r f o r m a n c e w h i l e recognising collective efforts for Membership Enhancements during the year that has just concluded.

The DG recounted his appreciation of the contributions of Club Members to TRF (The Rotary Foundation) over the years that has been increasing with every passing year, and looked forward to higher levels of performance in the forthcoming year. “This”, he said, “would stand in good stead for the Club that aspired for

District Grants Support while executing worthwhile Projects with larger financial outlays, impressively!”

The DG’s personal favourite project has been PROJECT ANNAPURNA that feeds needy children. This year’s national target is 1.5 million children, and even if each one of us undertakes to feed 10 children on July 1, even while enrolling other friends the target could simply be accomplished!

RTN AJAY GUPTA felt awesome as he recognised the tremendous popularity of PRESIDENT RTN ANUJ, with numerous friends, co-Presidents and relatives being present to shower blessings on the momentous occasion that comes but once in a Rotarian’s lifetime – his Installation as the President of the Club! He was so happy to see the entire audiences, besides his friends, who physically rose up to the occasion to “Light the Lamp”, so that 1.2 million other Lamps could be Lit!

WOW – THEME FOR THE FORTHCOMING YEAR!The DG hoped for WISDOM for all in the audience and OPPORTUNITIES for all, making them WINNERS all! That, my dear fellow Rotarians is the theme for the upcoming year – WOW!The DG concluded his presentation by handing over the ROTARIANS’ DECLARATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN ETHICS in all the things, thoughts, utterances and work that we perform. The DG suggested that copies be circulated to all Members individually, so that each of us signs this personally and frames it up to display at our workplaces!WOW! What a determined Rotarian! WOW! What a resolute personality! WOW! What an unassuming fellow Rotarian! WOW! DG RTN AJAY GUPTA!

CWC – CLUB WITHIN THE CLUB AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME!

At the first Club Assembly on Sunday July 6, each of the Directors presented the Members with their team’s plans spread throughoutthe year ahead.

The crowning glory was the unique concept of devising a CWC or a CLUB WITHIN THE CLUB, innovatively conceptualised by President Rtn. Anuj

Ajmera!

The entire RCBK is grouped into 4 teams in such a way that each Team has 13-15 Members, a homogenous collective whole of Past Presidents,

experienced Rotarians, New enthusiastic Members and involved Rotary Annes, only so that the much-desired bonding of all Club Members

encourages wholesome competition for superior Community Service, creative ow of ideas and activities, with an inspiring spirit of camaraderie,

fun, fellowship and friendship – thebasic tenets of the Rotary Movement!

The concept was received with enthusiasm and promises to encourage teamwork in various Projects, throughout the year ahead

EYE CHECK UP CAMP AT

SAMATA VIDYA MANDIR

A Veteran at Community Service (Medical), Director Rtn Sumanta

Choudhary led the team’s service efforts with the most wanted Eye

Check up Camp at Samata Vidya Mandir for the students of Stds. IX &

X! More than 140 students and Teachers had their eyes tested for any

maladies on Thursday July 10.

The 2-hour collective effort of a bunch of more than 12 Rotarians, led

by President Rtn Anuj Ajmera, encouraged the students to become

aware of the health status of their eyes before the vital Board Exams for

the first time in their career!

A team of experienced Doctors enabled with the diagnosis and

recommended therapies to the children who require help and

assistance! The positive vibes and the blessings that the Medical Team

and the Rotarians were bestowed with were evident in the eyes of each

student and teacher, but words fail us in their real description and

sentiment! May the team get all the strength and the courage to

better all past performances and make unscaled heights look small!

ACTIVITY FOR AUGUST MONTH

ROTARIANS WALK FOR HEALTH

ON NATURE’S TRAIL 3rd August

ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY KANDIVLIClub No. : 55940

The encouraging change in climatic

conditions and the health-inducing

atmosphere precipitated a bug that bit

Rotarians from RCBK!

President Rtn Anuj Ajmera decided to

provide some vigour and pep by

organising a walk through 5 kms on Nature’s Trail at the friendly

neighbourhood National Park at Borivili.

Attracting a bunch of more than a dozen

Rotarians on the early morning of Sunday

August 10, they gathered at the gates of

the National park and walked their way

to a healthy Sunday Morning right up to

Kanheri Caves, a distance of some 5 kms.

Enjoying some hot steaming chai, the walk was thoroughly enjoyable,

and the enthusiasm on the faces of the participants was a treat to watch

– undescribe-able in words!

RI DIST 3140 GETS ITS VIBRANT INTERACT CLUB 300+MEMBERS

It was on the historic Saturday August 9 that the Interact Club of

Gundecha Education Academy (ICGEA) got its second consecutive

President in Aayush Sureshkumar, the scientist scholar of Std XI,

heralding a glorious and eventful term of the popular leader and

President Simran Arora to a memorable close.

Present on the occasion were President of the Parent Club Rtn Anuj

Ajmera, Director (Partners-in-Service, RCBK) Rtn Jayeeta

Bhattacharya, School Co-ordinator & Vice Principal Mrs. Vanashree

Bhattacharya, all of whom were anked by District Chairman

(Interact Clubs) Rtn. Raman Abrol, Zonal Co-ordinator Rtn Som Saini,

District Secretary Rtn Virender Widge, enthusiastic members of the

parent Club.

ICGEA has had more than 140 members since its inception last year.

The Club grew to 300-plus this year, with the induction of more than

150 students of the School & Junior College, making it the largest

Interact Club in the District!

The impressive presentation made by IPP Simran provided the

audience of more than 200 Interactors, Teachers and Rotarian Guests

with an interesting bird’s eye view of the tremendous potential of each

and every Interactor in participative Community Service by the

citizens of tomorrow!

After ceremonially handing over of the reins of leadership to a

scientist in the incoming President Aayush, the new leader also

presented a more informative projection and shape of the things to

come in the upcoming year ahead!

The enthusiasm and the capabilities of the new team could only have

been gauged from the excitement on the 150 and more young faces

that were eager to get pinned to almost start a revolution in team spirit

and community service, filled with fun, fellowship and friendship like

never before!

Kudos to their mentors in the knowledgeable Teachers who would be

guiding them to scale unattained heights during the forthcoming

year! The excitement of being able to perform in novel ways and through

more novel means was enthused upon the youngsters by the very

articulate RI Dist Chairman of Interact Clubs Rtn Raman Abrol in his

thoroughly inimitable style!

Home Club President Rtn Anuj Ajmera’s speech was also a study in

motivation! It generated a thunderous applause by the audience that

was not only impressed with his speaking style, it was also

mesmerized by the content of his talk that was full of participative

encouragement, and was interspersed with examples of excellence in

collective performance and need-based community service for the

under-privileged that the Interactors could service with sincerity and

dedication.

Though the pinning of the more than 150 Interactors was a time-

consuming job, it was performed in unison by teams of Rotarians who

were not only present in large numbers, they were eager to provide

the function with their support and a willing helping hand!

It was a function that spelt success right from the very outset, as the

sprightly youngsters welcomed each Guest at the gates of the School

and personally escorted each Rotarian to their seats in the spacious

Hall of the Gundecha Education Academy, clicking each new

Interactor soon after he or she was pinned!

Hearty Congratulations to RCBK Director Rtn Jayeeta Bhattacharya,

Vice Principal & School Co-ordinator Mrs. Vanashree Bhattacharya

and the entire Management and Staff of the Gundecha Education

Academy for organising such a well-coordinated event and leading a

team that’s raising all expectations sky high from this potentially rich

Interact Club!

ACTIVITY FOR AUGUST MONTH

ROTARIANS GIFT “SCHOOL ON WHEELS” STUDENTS WITH GOODIES

AND CELEBRATE PRE-INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH ADIVASI KIDS

ROTARY CLUB OF BOMBAY KANDIVLIClub No. : 55940

India’s 68th Independence Day celebrations that began with the excitement of Tree Plantation at the Dadaji Kondev

Ground in Thakur Village continued with an enterprising visit by some very lively Rotarians visiting the Club’s agship

Project – the SCHOOL ON WHEELS – at the friendly neighbourhood National Park.

A Bus has been well-customized & converted into a Class room with basic necessities such as a Black board, benches, Soft

Boards, Educational Material, Toys, among other things.

The mobility of the Bus is enhanced with a proactive support team of Teachers, drivers and promotion staff that makes it

worthwhile for the needy Adivasi students staying together with their parents and families in the interiors of the

National Park, to come often to the attractive SCHOOL ON WHEELS to gain from the literacy-enhancing drive initiated

by the Rotary Club of Bombay Kandivli.

The Rotarians and their friends who visited the SCHOOL ON WHEELS were visibly enthused and excited at the

prospect of gifting the children with toys, cricket bats and balls, dolls, clothes, stationery like colour boxes, pencils, and

other goodies besides observing the children how they learn to read, write and share educative details of good facilities.

Quite a few students have befitted tremendously and have obtained admissions to recognised schools beyond the

confines of the National Park!

On a previous occasion when Rtn Deepa Goenka visited the SCHOOL ON WHEELS, the children themselves had asked

for some of these items, and she felt that rather than waiting for a festive occasion like Diwali or Dashera, the purpose

would well be served by collecting and arranging for these gifts at the earliest. And what better could have been the

occasion than the Independence Day celebrations!

Together with Club Director and Hon. Club Secretary Rtn Deepa Goenka were Club President Rtn Anuj Ajmera and his

wife Rtn Shikha, besides Rtn Bhavesh A Patel and Rtn Deepa Goenka’s compassionate friends, Sunita and Sharmila who

supported her sincere views almost instantly!

Their hour-long visit was an eye-opener for some of the guests as they realised the extent of illiteracy that prevails so close to where live, grow and

progress! They resolved to visit the SCHOOL ON WHEELS more often so that they may contribute to Sab ka Saath, Sab ka Vikas!

INSPIRING TREE PLANTATION ON PRE-INDEPENDENCE DAY AT

THE DADAJI KONDEV GROUND, THAKUR VILLAGE

About 100 sprightly young students from the Interact Club of Gundecha Education Academy, Thakur Village, led by Vice Principal Smt. Vanashree Bhattacharya and her teaching colleagues, besides 40 other enthusiastic youngsters from the neighbourhood Thakur Polytechnic, led by HOD and NSS Officer Prof. Suresh Pathak combined their youthful energy together to plant saplings of eco-friendly Neem and Ashoka trees at the Dadaji Kondev Municipal Ground in Thakur Village to commence their lively celebrations of India’s 68th Independence Day on August 14, 2014 early in the morning!

Thy were pleasantly surprised by the participative and well-timed visit of local BMC Councillor Yogesh Bhoir, HOD Gardens at the BMC R South Ward Office, Smt. Pashtye and over a dozen Rotarians led by President Rtn Anuj Ajmera and the 40-day old Geet, daughter of Rtn Dr. Pallavi Chaturvedi.

The ground was cleaned well, in spite of a light drizzling rain, and numerous pits were well-dug in advance at healthy distances of 10 feet from each other on the inner periphery of the Ground by active Rotarians supported by the gardening staff, and well-maintained saplings in adequate numbers were also well-arranged for by encouraging Rotarians from RCBK.

When the BMC Officials present on the occasion assured the students of good upkeep of the Ground, as well as well-manured support to their saplings, the energy of the students was enhanced manyfold and they to reciprocated by assuring all that they would periodically visit the Ground and trim their plants for maintaining an eco-friendly and healthy environment.

RCBK’S OVERNIGHT PICNIC TO DAMAN FOSTERS

UNFORGETABLE FELLOWSHIP

Come the weekend of August 23-24, some of the enterprising Rotarian couples pooled their handful of cars together and 29 of them drove down to Daman, about 120 kms north of Mumbai in drizzling rain and pleasant weather to Cidade, nestled amongst the greenery of Mother Nature, on the borders of Maharashtra and Gujarat by the shore of the Gulf of Khambhat (or the Gulf of Cambay if you like)!

Far away from the Madding Crowd of the metropolis, the lively bunch of Rotarians enjoyed themselves getting into their swimming costumes the moment they checked into the Resort Hotel and cooled themselves and their tempers to relive their carefree and childhood days, some even venturing to play card games in their efforts to rejuvenate from the tensions of everyday life! And, boy, what an experience it was!

Followed by envigourating spirits and sumptuous food, they continued their witty banter through the afternoon, accompanied by foot-tapping music, lively laughter and pressure-reducing dancing. A few of them also pooled together their acting talents on the spot and wove attractive one-act plays and skits to regale their fellow Rotarians and their families to an awesome afternoon! The liveliness of prospective Member couple Saisudha and Bandita Partho and their family was the toast of the event! What a friendly couple and family to enroll for all other Rotarians to expand their fellowship with!

As the day drew to a close, some liquored their way to blissful calmness, some encouraged each other to drive down leisurely into the dark streets of Daman into the middle of a peaceful and calm night – thoroughly smashing the stress and tensions out of their systems till sleep took them to wonderland!

The next day was yet another casual Sunday that gradually enabled some gay and collective banter, while a few of the Club Directorial crowd decided to meet together for a Board of Directors Meeting. They collectively decided to add tremendous fun, life-inducing colour and vibrant social service though proactive involvement of maximum Club Members to out-perform themselves in the days and weeks ahead to a more lively Community Service.

Nobody wanted the good times to end! But whatever has good beginnings has more exciting conclusions! The picnic that enveloped each of the participants, young and aged, into a solid, well-knit team of resourceful Rotarians has left unforgettable memories to cherish! Yeh Dil Mange More!

CLUB SPEAKER MEET

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT SLEEP APNOEA IS CURABLE!

ENT Specialist ENT Specialist and an expert on solutions for Sleep Apnoea RTN DR. VIKAS AGRAWAL presented a complex medico-socio

problem of snoring while sleeping with such elegance and simplicity that even petroleum technologists, railway technocrats, communications

specialists and chartered accountants among the audience were in complete awe of the Robotic Surgeon!

Despite his busy schedules and attending to calls for his specialised opinion and lectures on impact of snoring and on Sleep Apnoea from the

world over, RTN DR. VIKAS AGARWAL has always tried his best to be an integral part of our Club activities.

The audio-visual that RTN DR. VIKAS AGARWAL presented in simple-to-understand combination of Hindi and English was replete with

glaring examples of Indian patients and their typical problems and solutions, and their resultant success stories of having being cured of their

malady that every Rotarian present during his hour-long interactive session went home with an inspiring halo above his head, and with pride in

his mind for belonging to one of the most resourceful Rotary Clubs in town!

Guests invited by Rotarians sought more opportunities for interacting with celebrity Members and Speakers as a result of one of the most

celebrated speakers on Sleep Apnoea and one in a million research scholars in the country in RTN DR VIKAS AGARWAL made the informative

and educative presentations that the Club has ever seen and heard!

The very observant audience responded with intelligent laughter when RTN DR VIKAS AGARWAL invited members from the audience and

their families in his inimitable style to visit his clinic at the neighbouring Thakur Complex “to sleep” and become more aware of the intense

research that his team carries out on the impact of snoring and the momentary loss of breathing while sleeping peacefully through simple, yet

studied scientific analysis!

The interactivity was not only inspiring, as was evident from the tone and level of queries being asked with the enthusiasm of avid students, the

characteristic responses from the expert ROTARIAN SPEAKER DR VIKAS AGARWAL were also well researched answers that provided the

audience with a learning that no money can buy! A thoroughly educative experience!

FROM THE EDITOR’S TERMINAL . . . . . . Hi FellowRotarians!

It was such a daunting task to gather and put the news together this July ’14 Issue of HORIZON on your laptops, that in the final analysis, it’s sheer pleasure to have been able to present a collective bunch of THOUGHTS of brave Rotarians who just simply believe in putting that smile back on the faces of young children and needy parents on the one hand, and of determined Rotarians on the other who derive divine pleasure in THINKING, caring, sharing with the community.

It is this constant THINKING and regularly analysing of our contributions that is the result of our cultured and well-educated upbringing which enables us to keep performing everyday - professionally in the service of our vocations, emotionally in the service of our families and intellectually in the service of the community around us.

This effort and the collective result remind me of what we learnt in school of the POWER OF THE MIND and its ability to THINK positively, constructively, assertively and resolutely. This is so very well summarized in these few lines here:

THINK . . . . . . . .

If you THINK you are beaten, you are; if you THINK you dare not, you don’t!

If you’d like to win, but you THINK you can’t,

it’s almost certain you won’t!!

If you THINK you’ll lose, you’re lost! For, out in the world we find

Success begins with a fellow’s will – it’s all in the state of mind.

If you THINK you’re outclassed, you are! You’ve got to THINK high – to rise!

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before you can win a prize!

Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man;

But sooner, or later, the man who wins is the man who THINKS HE CAN!!

So,, let’s at all times THINK positively! Our THOUGHTS work as a Transmitting Tower - transmitting positive energy and feeling the strength of our powerful THOUGHTS, courageous deeds and brave actions!

Wishing you cartloads of strength to THINK well, perform better and excel in Community Service together with other fellow Rotarians, having fun, sharing bonhomie and fellowship, and enveloping all with our friendship! It’s indeed a pleasure of being with you all in the best way I can – through this colourful and thoroughly reachable HORIZON!
