Self-expression is as vital to human beings as breathing. It is how

we interact with others and the world. It can be supremely fulfilling

or irritably frustrating. Self-expression could take place through

communication, body language or even artwork!

Aren’t we Toastmasters a lucky group of individuals? Don’t we

practice all that and even more? We practice communication in

and outside our meetings! When you smile to a fellow Toastmaster

or a guest in our meeting you are simply practicing self-expression!

You are truly expressing your inner self!

When you give a speech, you are presenting and sharing with your

fellow Toastmasters and guests a piece of art that you yourself have

created!

In Toastmasters, we also practice leadership skills and self-

expression which is also vital for leadership.

To be able to lead one must have the ability to self-express clearly.

No wonder we consider our founder, Dr Ralph C. Smedley to be a

genius. He is the one who said: Self-expression is one of the

first steps toward leadership. Sometimes an individual

gets hold of an idea, and shapes his/her whole life!

MANAMA TOASTMASTERS – October 2014 5

…. and the role of

Page 6: Horizon October 2014

6 YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Sometimes we don't even think about how we express our inner

reality to those outside. It just happens naturally. At other times,

we may strive to express something and disappointedly fall short of

what we meant to get across.

Isn’t that also another of the difficulties that Toastmasters helps us

to overcome? Whatever issue we may have with self-expression can

be clarified and harmonized with the support of our fellow

Toastmasters!

We joined Toastmasters hoping to improve our communication

skills, but it may take some of us some time to find out that that in

reality, the benefits go beyond this one goal! To quote our founder

again: While most of us may have entered Toastmasters

to learn to make speeches, that benefit is but the

beginning of the good which may come to us, and the

good which we may do for mankind!

People always say it’s good to put “your feelings into words.” But is it

true? If you are anxious, scared, or worried about something, is it

really going to make you feel better to dwell on this anxiety by

speaking or writing about it? The answer, it turns out, is yes. New

research published shows quite clearly that, when it comes to the

phobias we have, simply talking about them helps curb negative

responses to what we fear.

Verbalizing our anxieties seems to help us manage our behaviour.

This is true whether we are trying to get over our fear of insects or

giving a speech in front of a live audience.

One of the hardest things to do when communicating with someone

is expressing yourself. How many times have you said something that

just didn’t come out the way you wanted it to? Some people have a

fear of expressing themselves. They are afraid to say something that

might cost them a friendship and as a result they bottle everything up

tight and seize up at the mere thought of sharing their true emotions.

Be yourself. Even though you are consciously trying to be more

expressive, it does not mean that you have to act like a totally

different person.

When we express ourselves, we are creative which in turn helps us to

achieve our goals more effectively. It leads us to new pathways and

“Find yourself and express yourself in

your own particular way. Life is nothing

but a dream, and if you create your life

with love your dream becomes a masterpiece of art ― Don Miguel

MANAMA TOASTMASTERS – October 2014 7

believe me, you will hardly

believe what you find out

about yourself. An ideal way

of venting and finding

yourself. What more could

you ask for?

Page 8: Horizon October 2014

Here are some tips :

Evaluate Interest –

Find out each member’s needs and goals so you can help them reach

their objectives. The Member Interest Survey (Item 403) is a useful tool

for accomplishing this. Base the focus of your club’s educational program

on the results of your search.

Analyse Reasons For Missed Meetings –

• Are members missing meetings because of their time or location? If

other members agree, consider adjusting the time or location of your

meetings.

• Do meetings run too long? A shorter program might encourage

attendance.

• Do members have enough opportunity for participation? Try a rotation

method that allows everyone a chance to fulfill all meeting roles.

Nurture Potential Non-Renewals –

Once members reach their original goals, suggest new ones, such as the

advanced communication and leadership tracks. Are members “burned

out” from fulfilling too many meeting roles? Lighten the load as needed.

Part 4 of a 4 Part Series

Leadership Development

Educational Program

Back to the basics of Membership Retention

You’ve attracted members, but how do you

retain them?

The first thing to know is why each member

joined. What were the intentions and goals of

each person? If you don’t know, it’s time to

ask. After all, you can’t actively retain

members if you don’t know why they joined

in the first place.

8 YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS

Page 9: Horizon October 2014

Educational Program

Despite your best intentions, members will leave. Members leave

Toastmasters for a variety of reasons; it’s important to find out why.

Here are some of the most common reasons members leave their clubs,

along with suggestions for how to encourage them to stay.

• Too many other commitmentsSuggest a break to take care of

commitments. Check back with them in a few months to see if they are

able to come back.

• Inconvenient meeting timeThis might also be the case for other

members. Take a poll to find out if another time works better. If not,

suggest the web page www.toastmasters.org/find to find a club with a

more convenient meeting time.

• Pressure to work too quicklyRemember that Toastmasters

programs are self-paced. It is important to encourage members while

allowing them to work at their own pace.

• RelocationWhen members move away, wish them well and suggest

they visit www.toastmasters.org/find to look for clubs close to their new

homes.

The aim is to fulfill members’ needs. When members know how to

succeed within their club or district, membership retention increases.

Ice Breaker Speech

“Next is Kishore Babu of 4th Standard.”The crowd turned their heads. I rose from the chair and paced slowly tothe stage, climbed up with the help of a teacher..Held the microphonestand like a pro..looked at the crowd..and began..

Respected Teachers, my dear friends, Good Morning..Today I am goingto talk about..About..About..I went blank..blind. fell on the stage..cracking the stage..the microphonestand on top of me..When I opened my eyes I was lying on a bench with my classmates andteachers around..

That was my first speech..I was born in a village near Kannur, in Keralain a communist family. Naturally, Inquilab Zindabad was the first thingI must have said as a kid because every one says that...though we didnot know what it meant those days. Our village was so remote we didn’thave electricity. In fact in my house we got power connection only in1985.

I never buckled my shoes, I never went up the hill to fetch any pail ofwater..Yes, Nursery rhymes were something I heard when my son wentto kindergarten. We never had or never heard anything calledkindergarten those days.. At the age of 6 we went to 1st standard. Nouniforms..no shoes..we walked barefoot to school wading throughknee-deep water in the paddy fields.

Ice Breaker Speech

Our house was near the railway track. Every 30 minutes or so a trainwould pass by..There would be tremors when the train passes by, andgradually the floor of the front room cracked and every two or threeyears we had to repair the floor. We were so used to trains that ourroutines were linked to the trains. Parasuram has gone. I have to go towork. Jayanti is coming. Its 10.30. In our house, dinner was served onlyafter the Cochin Express passed at around 8.45. If the train ran late weate late. Imagine if that train didn’t run that day!

The high school was 7kms away and I used to walk all the way, becausethere was no bus on that route. I was a good student and scored goodmarks but when I went to college I felt learning mathematics was awaste of time. Algebra, calculus, trigonometry..They are still Greek tome.

My first job was in a bank. A dream job those days. But in my case itwas a disaster. Big ledgers, Bank book, cash book etc etc..My job was toenter the daily collection using the calculator. But, every time I totalled,I used to get a different figure. Six months later I resigned and set off toMadras, the big city. After a year I got into a company called KenyonEckardt, the 15th biggest Advertising Agency in the world as a Visualizeand very soon became one of the Art Directors. After seven years, Iwanted to set up my own agency but soon realized that financemanagement was not my cup of tea. May be it could have beenattributed to my super skills in mathematics. I closed shop and went towork again..

But, all along I was like a hermit crab, hiding in my shell, with nointeraction with the outside world. but Toastmasters has helped me tosee a new light. However, I still remember the first day I came toManama Toastmasters. When I was asked to introduce myself, I wassweating and my knees wobbled. During the break, I just slipped outand went home, only to come back after a gap of three months as facinga gathering and saying three words was a monumental task for me, buttoday, here I am and guess what, you are listening to me!

Ice Breaker Speech

I am not frozen and shivering because I have a fear of public

speaking….it’s the ice in my mind that’s not yet broken.

Thank you … I know I could count on you Toastmasters who will go to

any extent to comfort & encourage their fellow Toastmaster by even

laughing at such pathetic physical humor. Now that the ice is broken let

me tell you one more thing. A study has shown that people often smile

when they are frustrated. Look at VP Education who is already smiling

and I haven’t even begun my speech.

Master of Ceremonies, Mr. President, fellow Toastmasters and guests,

there is a small town in India ….Well, there are many small towns in

India but this one is very close to my heart because 51 years ago I was

in that town as the youngest of 4 siblings. Financially - we had enough

for our needs, though not enough for my greed. My father was a teacher

and my mother a social worker. Strangely the town was called

MusafirKhana. Musafir means traveller and khana means abode. So,

Traveler’s Abode. Quite unlike its name, never did any traveller come to

this place seeking abode. Not even did Columbus land there by mistake.

Musafirkhana has another meaning – waiting room. That probably

defines the place more aptly because, to me, it appeared that life had

been waiting there forever - waiting ….to be lived..

TM Avneesh Mishra

MANAMA TOASTMASTERS – October 2014 21

Page 22: Horizon October 2014

Ice Breaker Speech

I grew up in that place with another 5000 of its inhabitants - about a

1000 females, 1000 males and the rest were cattle and dogs. Yes, we

had more of them than us. But we all co-habited in peace and

tranquility. The town was quite backward. The primary school that I

attended had no desks and chairs and so we sat on the ground on mats.

No electricity, no running tap water. In the name of healthcare we had

a dilapidated government clinic and a few quacks. Despite all this

backwardness, we were a very liberal society. Men walked hand-in-

hand with other men, arms thrown around one another’s shoulders and

also around the waist and yet nobody raised an eyebrow. Women did

the same and more. Nobody raised an eyebrow. We were very liberal,

you see and happy. I guess that’s why our population could never catch

up with that of the cattle and dogs.

17 years of my life in a town like that made me tough and my resolves

tougher. So, when I left home to join an Engineering college to stand on

my own two feet, they didn’t tremble. While on one hand there was

sadness to leave my friends behind, on the other there was excitement

to make new ones. While on one hand there was sadness due to leaving

my family that loved me unconditionally, on the other there were my

dreams that I loved unconditionally. That was just the beginning of a

long journey of a village bumpkin who, on a personal front now, has a

beautiful wife and two loving, grown up children and who on the

professional front heads a company. I may not have achieved all my

dreams but I certainly enjoyed this journey of fulfilling them. Even as I

stand here in front of you with some more dreams to fulfill, I am still

enjoying the journey and my feet aren’t trembling.
