It’s a bird, it a plane, no, it’s Eagles on Air! Tune in to Horizon’s newly revamped broadcasting program to find out the happenings in and around our school. You won’t be disappointed! Eagles on Air is our weekly news broadcast that gives a snapshot of Horizon Elementary. We bring news that is happening today. This idea came about when Mrs. Ashley and Mrs. Walker wanted to create something that was a little different from HETV. They had an idea to bring our broadcasting program to another level that could be shared with our school to show news and events as well as highlight how we are all using the seven habits on a daily basis. They decided that it would be a wonderful way to utilize our exploratory times by offering Eagles on Air as a class. This mixed group of fifth and sixth graders all share our ideas together to come up with great concepts for our weekly shows. Sixth grade member, Whitt Jackson, says “I think Eagles on Air is a fun experience. I like being able to come up with an idea and then see it on film.”

Fifth grade member, Avery Cumbie, says “I like Eagles on Air because it gives you a chance to use your seven habits to make an idea happen.” Filming for Eagles on Air takes place on Wednesdays, during our fifth and sixth grade exploratory times. Students collaborate with all of the members to make sure we have an idea for a script before we begin to film. In the past we have interviewed leaders in our school such as Mr. Richardson and been able to capture assemblies and school-wide activities to share with the school. One thing that is great about being a part of this group, is being able to interact with a lot of students in different grades. We often film students in lower grades showing how they are displaying the seven habits. This is always a good experience to see how the habits are being used throughout our building in so many different ways. So be sure to remind your teacher to show you the weekly episodes of Eagles on Air. There are currently three episodes with the fourth one on the horizon!

Our Teachers and Staff have BRIGHT Ideas ~1st grade teachers throw a Sock Hop to celebrate 50 Days of School

Horizon’s 1st grade teachers are so cool! To celebrate the 50th Day of School they organized a Sock Hop with 1950s music and Coke floats, where students and teachers dressed up in poodle skirts, rolled up jeans and other 50s attire. They also had some fun with the number 50. “We spent the day doing various 50s activities including: writing 50 words, counting and writing to 50, and writing about when we are 50 years old,” says Ms. Morgan Foshee. “The teachers enjoyed watching the kids enjoy the day and getting to dress up ourselves.” She said her favorite question of the day was by the student who asked her what a “juke box” was when the word appeared on his 1950s word search. This was such a BRIGHT idea Mr. Cooper, Mrs. Davy, Ms. Foshee, Mrs. Weaver, and Mrs. Wright!

The Seven Habits of Being Drug-Free

s

Make Plans to attend the Teacher Treat Trail on October 27th

The Horizon Teacher Treat Trail will be October 27th, immediately following our October PTA meeting, which begins at 6:00pm. So students - get your costumes ready to go trick-or-treating at each classroom! We will have games, contests, music, and food and drinks for sale. The winner of the teachers’ door decorating contest will be announced. Admission is free, and the whole family is invited! Please help us by sending in a bag of candy to your students’ classroom prior to the event for teachers to pass out to trick-or-treaters. More details will be sent home soon.

The 7 habits let us live a drug free life

•Habit 1 advises us to not give in to peer pressure, you are in charge. •Habit 2 guides you to create a plan that does not involve drugs.

•Habit 3, sets goals and priorities before considering drugs. •Using habit 4, everyone is happy without drugs.

•Habit 5 teaches us that drugs develop bad habits and people stop listening to each other. •Habit 6 advises a drug free life that causes you to be more willing to work with others.

•Habit 7 tells us to eat healthy instead of doing drugs. •Always choose to be drug free!

It's Red Ribbon Week at Horizon October 24-28! Our theme is “YOLO–Be Drug Free!”

Horizon guidance counselor Mrs. Walker has exciting activities planned for our students all week.

Horizon is participating in Red Ribbon Week October 24 - 28 as part its drug prevention education program. Through Red Ribbon Week, students learn about the dangers of drug abuse, while adults and children are encouraged to act in ways that keep children safe from substance abuse. Horizon students Alexa Manthey and Root Belay are our guest writers for this month’s Leader in Me feature story about how the Habits apply to being drug-free.

Each day students can dress in a way to show they are committed to being drug free!

Monday – “Respect Yourself, Don’t Do Drugs” Wear Red Day Tuesday – “Save yourself from drugs" Wear your favorite superhero shirt or cape. Wednesday – “Protect your future and put drugs to rest” Wear your favorite PJs. Thursday – “Show Good Character, Don’t do Drugs" Dress in your favorite book character outfit. Friday – “Team up against Drugs" Wear your favorite Team jersey or shirt.

Horizon’s Student Leaders are Proactive! Each month teachers will choose a “Student of the Month” who best demonstrates that month’s Leader in Me Habit. For August, the students who best demonstrated Habit 1- “Be Proactive” in each class are listed below. Congratulations!

Horizon’s Butterfly Garden is open for class Thanks to Mrs. Bero and her Eco-Kids students, Horizon's beautiful butterfly garden is available for teachers and students to use. The Eco-Kids worked hard to spread new mulch on the new weed block fabric, trimmed back vegetation and moved the teacher seat into the "Sunflower House" (an open-air area surrounded by tall sunflowers, pictured above)! As in past years, sunflowers were planted at the end of last school year by the then K-2nd grade students. The now fully grown sunflowers are great teachers of the life cycle of a flower: look for the one that is just opening, the one wide open and the one heavy with seeds forming. Mrs. Bero says the butterflies are out in force, with lots of painted ladies--could be descendants of those freed by 2nd grade last spring?! Visit the Butterfly Garden today!
