Letters About Literature is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem, or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters are judged on state and national levels. Tens of thousands of students from across the country enter Letters About Literature each year. Students in Ms. Reimer’s and Mrs. Austin’s ELA classes were asked to write to authors, including award-winning author Sy Montgomery who wrote Temple Grandin – How the Girl Who Loved Cows Embraced Autism and Changed the World. All students read this biography but did not necessarily choose to write to Ms. Montgomery. Students’ letters were submitted in February and semi-finalists were notified by mail to attend an awards banquet in Neenah, WI, on Saturday, April 25, at 1:30 P.M., at the Neehah Public Library. Wisconsin finalists will be selected at a later date. Student Learning, Whatever it Takes!
Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents & Guardians, As one part of the state of Wisconsin’s accountability system for schools, Wausau School District students in grades 3 through 8 will be participating in a new assessment called the Badger Exam or Badger Exam 3-8. This new assessment will gauge how well students are mastering the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics, as well as measure the knowledge and skills students should have acquired by the time they reach each grade level. Students will take the Badger Exam between April 6 and May 22, 2015. The Badger Exam 3-8 will be taken online. This will give teachers a more accurate measure of student achievement, particularly for high and low-performing students. Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and English language learners are built into the system so progress of students can be accurately measured. The Badger Exam 3-8 includes three components: multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, and performance tasks. Students will receive a score based on their performance. The score will fall into one of these four levels: Advanced, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. You can click here for a brochure that further explains the Badger Exam 3-8, and there is also a website where students can take practice tests. At Horace Mann, please know that we will practice taking the Badger Exam on April 8. In addition, we have scheduled three days to complete the actual test: Tuesday, April 21; Tuesday, April 28; and Thursday, April 30. It is imperative that your child be in attendance during these testing dates!
Sincerely, Andrea Sheridan Director of Teaching, Learning & Leadership Integration and Dr. Julie Sprague Principal of Horace Mann Middle School

Sports Update
Sixth grade parents, you are about to
become the proud parent of an ancient
Greek! Greek Week is expected to be
celebrated during the week of April 20-
23. There is much more information
coming by email, and a letter will be sent
home with your child. Please be prepared
to help your child dress like an ancient
Greek and complete an agora project that
will be due that week. You will also
receive an invitation to join us for some of
the activities, if you're available!
The 7th grade girls’ basketball teams represented Horace Mann with gumption and pride. The Lady Eagles were eager to learn the fundamentals of basketball and enjoyed the challenges of self-improvement. Both teams eagerly celebrated a successful season on the hardwood. More importantly, the girls learned the significance of basketball IQ, defense, teamwork, tenacity and leadership.
The fourth quarter of the school year is upon us and that means that students in our Physical Education classes will be starting outdoor activities for class. Although the weather is not always great for going outside, we will be enjoying the great outdoors whenever possible. Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Being prepared for outside often means a warmer jacket or dressing in layers. Hats, gloves and most of all a good attitude help to make it a positive experience. Check with your specific Physical Education teacher for details on your up and coming units. Horace Mann Physical Education instructors continue to look for ways to improve the overall instruction of our PE classes. This spring expect your child to be encouraged to push themselves physically, mentally and socially as we round out the rest of the school year. Meeting these high expectations in class requires focus, organization, and commitment to being better tomorrow than you were today. That process starts at home. Help us help your child to succeed. Enjoy the spring season, get outside and be active when possible.
