Principal’s Message HORACE MANN EDUCATOR Here at Horace Mann, our students are learning the im- portance of being thankful for what we have as well as providing assistance for our neighbors when needed. Again this year, food was collected for donation to the Lakewood Community Service Cen- ter. The K-Kids Club also ex- emplified the spirit of giv- ing by collecting toiletries and creating care packages for our areas homeless. Their thoughtfulness is amazing, right! Thank you for your generosity and for show- ing our students what it means to be a truly compassionate community. Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season! During these next few weeks leading up to the holidays, the talent and ded-ication of many of our students and musical directors will be on display through the various winter concerts and performances being held through-out the month. It’s a perfect time to bring the family to hear some outstand-ing music either for free or for a few dollars. Below is the schedule of events at the Civic Auditorium. The elementary schools will also be hold-ing winter performances so make sure to check your school’s web site for the time and dates. LHS Symphonic Band/Camarata Orchestra — Tuesday, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m.

GIFTED TESTING—We are accepting referrals for gifted testing and possible identification during the months of November and December. Information on the characteristics of gifted children and a parent referral form can be obtained from your school principal or secretary. Testing for all 2nd and 5th graders will take place the week of January 11, 2016. However, students in other grades may be referred for as-sessment during our referral period of November and December. Testing for these students will take place during January and February of 2016. Please note that testing and identification of a student during this school year may not result in services for the current year. Please contact your school principal or Kathy Ingersoll, 216-529-4087 if you have any questions or need further information.

November was a great month at Horace Mann, despite the shortened schedule due to Elec-tion Day and Parent/Teacher conferences. Parents, grandparents, and other veterans gathered for a Veterans Day assembly to recog-nize the tremendous contribution our veterans made to preserving our freedom. PTA members provided coffee and helped veterans who attended fill out forms used for individual recognition from Dr. Waters during the assembly. It was a wonderful celebration of our Veterans!

PTA Reflections Chair Beth Kiraly-Bratko organized a workshop on November 19 to help kids work on submissions for the PTA Reflections art contest. Students used paints and other sup-plies to create their interpretations of the theme, "Let Your Imagination Fly." A good time was had by all, and the dozen or more students who attended created beautiful works of art! Traditionally, the PTA doesn't have a meeting in December. This year, we've organized a PTA Holiday Gathering at Around the Corner on Tuesday, December 8 at 6:00 pm. Parents, teachers and staff welcome! Cash bar. Appetizer and snacks provided. An Evite was sent to all PTA members with information about the gathering and how to RSVP. If you would like to join the PTA and want to be added to the Evite, please e-mail [email protected] before Friday, December 4. While doing your holiday shopping this season, be sure to sign up for Amazon Smile and select PTA Ohio Congress Horace Mann Elementary PTA. Shopping with your Target RedCard? Select Horace Mann Elementary School, School ID: 82814 A portion of your purchases will ben-efit Horace Mann Elementary PTA. The PTA Teacher/Staff Cookie Walk is Wednesday, December 16. So get your recipes ready and keep an eye out for a flyer with more information. Don't miss this opportunity to help our teachers and staff start the holiday break on a sweet note! There are roughly two and a half weeks of school after Thanksgiving before Winter Break begins! On December 17 at 1:30 pm in the gym, students will gather in the gym for Horace Mann's holiday concert. Parents, grandparents, and other family members are welcome to come enjoy the entertainment. Hope to see you there!

Thank you to everyone who attended our November PTA meeting. We were happy to have some new members join us! Mark your calendar for our next meeting on January 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. Lakewood's H2O volunteer group will provide babysitters for the meeting to keep the kids busy. If you have not already sent in your PTA membership, please do! Your involvement and support help us continue to host fun, educational events as well as support the work of our teachers. Even if you can't make the PTA meetings, join. There are many ways to be involved! Be sure to "Like" Horace Mann Elementary PTA on Facebook! You'll find a lot of great info and pictures of school events. You can also check out the Lakewood City Schools web site for more info, links to teacher blogs, and more! If you have any questions, comments, or topics of discussion for the PTA, please email [email protected]. We want to hear from you and we're always interested in new topics for discussion at our PTA meetings, on our Facebook page, or our Wednesday par-ent helper group. Have a great Winter Break!

Winter Program – Thursday, December 17, 2015

Please note our program format: 9:30am Dress rehearsal – Student body attends this performance (Grades K-5) 1:30pm Program begins, families are invited to attend

Please enter and exit the Gym quickly and quietly, between grade performances.

Thank You! Mr. Waryk

Lakewood Schools now provide Guidelines for Audiences.

These guidelines are printed in all programs. We hope

that this will make our events more audience friendly and that you will work with your chil-

dren to practice how to be an audience. I look forward to seeing you at our holiday program.

Mr. Waryk

Please enter or exit the auditorium between ensemble performances only. It is polite to wait at the back of the auditorium until an appropriate pause in the program.

Children in the audience should be seated with a responsible adult. If the child with you becomes noisy or cries, please take the child from the auditorium at any time to soothe him or her.

Your appreciation is shown not only by your applause after their performance, but also by your silence during their performance. Students have worked extremely hard to develop soft musical dynamics.

A selection is finished when the conductor turns and faces the audience, or when the conductor drops arms completely. Please re-frain from applause until that time.

While applause at the end of a selection is appreciated, whistling and shouting are not.

During a selection, solos should be applauded only if they are of a pop nature (jazz, swing, etc.).

Future president? Olympic gold champion? Chief of Police? These are just a few of the predictions that third graders made about themselves when they peeked into the future. Check out your child’s Time Magazine cover and article and read about future accomplishments they hope to achieve. Time will tell…

Our third grade students have been busy—take a look!

!!Important!! — After School Driving Line Reminder

If you are a parent who drives to pick up your school age (K-5) Horace Mann student after school, please be sure to read this over! Our pre-school friends leave earlier than 3:05pm, so we have reserved the pick-up lane be-tween the main office and the gym for those cars, it is marked with cones. Parents who pick up K-5 students should line up in the right-hand lane and wait BEHIND the light pole near the office door , keeping their place in line as it moves forward after pre-school dismissal. Please do not go around cars to fill in a gap unless you are invited to do so by Horace Mann staff. Follow-ing this procedure will ensure that the line moves smoothly and also make it a safe procedure for everyone. Please contact the office at 529-4257 if you have questions. Thank you so much for your cooperation: We are all in this together!

HORACE MANN BUILDING HOURS

Security for all staff and students at Horace Mann is very important to us; at the same time we want the building to be accessible for our families. Af-ter the school day is over, between 3:15 and 4:00 pm, students are permit-ted back in the building with the adult who is responsible for them to re-trieve items such as coats, forgotten homework, etc. They should enter at the main office door and let office staff know why they have returned. Af-ter 4:00 pm, access is limited to the gym hallway for scheduled activities for students and parents who are part of those activities. With your cooper-ation, we can keep our building safe and secure at all times. Thank you!

FITNESS FITS EVERYONE—Jordan’s Family Foundation sponsors events to raise awareness and research money for congenital heart diseases. In September they held their Fitness Fits Everyone event at Lakewood Park and the Horace Mann community participated. We are happy to announce

that we were awarded 3rd place for participation and received a $100 check to be used for playground or other fitness equipment. If you have an idea on how to best spend that award, please let Dr. Wa-ters know.
