Variant / A conceptual project

sponsored by Honda North America for a

product that would improve an

individual’s performance and overall

communication. The Variant relieves the

user of any pain or discomfort by means

of Bio-Electric impulse remodulation.

When worn this two part device would

transmit electrical impulses to

remodulate the body’s Bio-Electric

frequencies to comfort and relieve

tension or pain induced by everyday

stresses. Based in part on the scientific

studies of electronic acupuncture and the

Eastern art of acupressure.

Prototype Description/ The prototype was generated by the

use of the MAC version of a CAD program which allows for easy

translation to MasterCam. Tool paths were generated in

MasterCam and a two piece part was cut on a three axis CNC.

The rest of the form was hand shaped, casted in urethane for

the female molds and castings were then done in silicone with

suspended components.

Candela Corporation manufactures, and distributes innovative clinical

solutions that enable physicians, surgeons and personal care

practitioners to treat selected cosmetic and medical conditions using

lasers, aesthetic laser systems, and other advanced technologies.

CANDELA Smoothbeam / This product was originally intended for

individuals who wanted to eliminate port wine stain birth-marks. A port-

wine stain or naevus flammeus is a vascular birthmark consisting of

superficial and deep dilated capillaries in the skin which produce a

reddish to purplish discoloration of the skin.

How It’s Used Today / The most commonly diagnosed skin disorder in

the U.S. and the number one reason for a patient's visit to a

dermatologist -- acne -- can now have long-term clearance with laser

treatment, according to a recent study published in The Journal of the

American Academy of Dermatology.

Research conducted in actual treatment centers in

Boston and New York; consulting with doctors and

patients alike to compile a thorough design research

brief. The brief was used to guide brainstorm sessions

and generate brand image boards. Brand image

boards serve a variety of functions from helping reach

consensus on visual vocabulary with clients to

creating visual testing formats for consumers. Brand

image boards are a way to visualize concepts and help

understand the semiotics of a brand before the design

process starts.

Sketches and sketch forms began to develop slight animal and

mammal characteristics. We used the names of the animals/

mammals to identify various concepts as well as to guide the

impressions of a sleek, stream lined device.

The main laser housing consisted of the required inputs for the hand

held diode, a recessed display, wand port and storage compartment.
