MEWelcome to

Hop Meadow Country Club

A big thank you goes out to our artist, Deb Wadsworth who graced our dining room walls during the months of January through March with her oil paintings of pets and flowers. If you would like to contact Deb for commissioned work she can be reached at (860)707-5154 or [email protected]. Deb also has a studio in the Farmington Valley Arts Center in Avon, CT.

Catherine M. Elliott is a contemporary artist whose work is evocative of the American Impressionism style of painting. “My paintings are primarily of atmospheric and light conditions portraying the subjects quality. I try to capture the true grace and elegance of the remaining countryside of New England. Inspired by Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and the French Impressionism Painters, her work explores atmospheric and lighting conditions successfully rendering the overall sense of light. Enjoy the still lifes, nature, landscapes, seascapes, boats, ships, flowers, and fruits.

Catherine Elliott will be displaying her beautiful art beginning the week of April 12th. We welcome her and to get a sneak peek please visit her website www.catherinemelliott.com

What is the definition of superior customer service?

A good general definition of superior customer service is personable, direct attention that delivers customer satisfaction. Our team’s goal in 2010 is to focus more on you, our Members and deliver the consistent level of superior

member service that you all deserve. As we position ourselves to insure that we deliver and set ourselves apart from the norm, the decision to make a change in the Clubhouse operation became evident. I am excited to announce the promotion of Danielle Hermanowski to the position of Restaurant Manager for Hop Meadow Country Club.

Danielle has 10 years experience in the hospitality industry and joined the Hop Meadow team last spring assuming the role of Banquet Supervisor. Danielle joined us after 5 years of experience at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield as the Restaurant, Bar, and Banquet Manager. Danielle is also very comfortable in the kitchen having spent four years working at Rentschler Field, East Hartford in the kitchen operation.

In Danielle’s new role she will be responsible for the Front of the House Staff, which includes the Club’s a la carte, banquet and bar operation. She is a welcomed asset to the Hop Meadow team and has proven herself this past year by executing all of the Club’s events in a professional manner, delivering excellent service to our guests. Danielle said a big inspiration for her career comes right from her home. She comes from a very large and loving family. Please join me in congratulating Danielle on her new position.

Spring time is here and the seasonal programs have been developed to appeal to all Members of the family. Please enjoy “your” Club and let me know if there is anything that you would like offered at your Club that you don’t see and I will do my very best to bring it to Hop Meadow.

Thank you for being part of the Hop Meadow Club family and here’s to a wonderful season!

Sincerely yours,Jackie Morr, COO

As I write this note it is Sunday afternoon, March 7 and it’s about 60 degrees and sunny. I know of a few guys who played the upper holes yesterday while 24 of us were playing in

the Annual March Madness Mixed Paddle Tournament (see cover). Like you, I am ready for spring and I’m hopeful it’s finally here. Along with more outdoor activities, spring means an annual Membership Drive at Hop Meadow Country Club. As noted previously, The Hop has faired better than most clubs through the recession, however we need to increase our membership scrolls in order to continue to provide the activities and amenities you have come to expect and enjoy. As a reminder for you and prospects when you’re talking to them, here are some of those activities and amenities you enjoy as a Member:

• The valley’s premier championship-level golf course • 8 outstanding tennis courts, 5 of which are lighted for night play • The area’s largest and most attractive pool • Outstanding pool, tennis, and golf instruction by our well known and loyal staff • Discounts on clothes and equipment for your Club sports in our pro shops • A thriving paddle tennis community for all skill levels • An expanded summer camp program now run by Kids Entertainment Inc. • Special access to events at Hartford’s XL Center • Reciprocity privileges at The Hartford Club downtown • Dining Reciprocity privileges at The Patterson Club in Fairfield • Access to other private clubs via Boxgroove, which replaces Private Golf Network this year • Access to the pool and fitness facilities at McLean at a 20% discount • Imaginative and high quality food and beverage offerings • Numerous special events, parties, tournaments, and gatherings to enjoy with friends

As the ad says, “Membership has its privileges.” Membership also has its responsibilities. Please consider how you can be a participatory Member of Hop Meadow rather than merely a consumer. Talking up the Club and recruiting Members does not take alot of effort and yet it’s easy to forget or defer to another time and place. Now, more than ever, is when we need each other to make the time to grow membership. To help in that effort we have a number of upcoming events including:

• Financial incentives for sponsoring a new Member. There is one change to the previously announced program - we are increasing the offering from $250 to $1,000 to the sponsor of the first 10 golf Members. • Member Appreciation Days on June 24 and August 26. All Members are encouraged to use whatever part of the Club they want to, regardless of membership class. Further details will be announced soon. • Join us on the golf deck June 18 for our summer kick-off party • A standing invitation for you bring any prospective Member for a meal, a golf game, a tennis match, or a swim in the pool - whatever you think will help show off your Club and encourage your guest to join

Please direct any question or task to Jackie Morr or me. We are here to help you and we need your help. Happy spring to you and yours,

Peter Black, Membership Chairman

Featured Spring Cocktail by Tyler

STOLI SALAD~Stoli blueberry, stoli orange, stoli citron, stoli raspberry, stoli persik, cranberry juice, orange juice, and pineapple juice shaken and served on the rocks or in a martini glass! The transition from winter to spring is one of the most anticipated times of year (especially for those of us in the north). The snow has melted the sun in shining, the ground comes to life with green and it is once again enjoyable to be outside longer than 10 minutes without getting all bundled up. As you finish up your spring cleaning or income taxes and plan your gardens and summer vacations, take some time to sit down on our deck and enjoy a refreshing spring cocktail that wakens your taste buds from the winter blues.

Now that we are open Wednesday evenings I’m pleased to announce the return of WINE WEDNESDAyS!!! We will be offering a few different great wines for sale by the bottle for $10 each, what a steal!! Here’s a sneak peak at two of them…

Crosby Cabernet Sauvignon 2008An easy drinking red wine, dark purple color, with a dark fruit bouquet of plum, cherry and mocha with hints of chocolate. Soft tannins and a supple finish with a touch of scorched earth gives this wine a good complexity.

Casa Julia Sauvignon BlancA fresh and crisp tasting 100% Sauvignon Blanc from older vines. Pablo Morande who twice was Winemaker of the Year in Chile made this. With pear, apple and peach aromas followed by tropical, rich, citrus flavored palate. Great fruit/acid balance and juicy. Good body, long persistence.

“What contemptible scoundrel stole the cork to my lunch?” W.C. Fields

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about our new wine menu, beers on tap, specialty drinks, or how great my handicap is going to be this season. And please email me or speak with me about any suggestions for your pub!!!

Hop Meadow Kids Game Night ~ Ages 5 and up were welcome to enjoy a night of Wii competition, cards, board games and pizza.

Happy Hour at your Club ~ Live music in the Pub the first Friday of every month plus drink specials and complimentary appetizers.

NEW MENU ITEMSWhat’s new in the kitchen? By now you may have noticed our new

and expanded menu. We always like to change it up in the spring with a spotlight on lighter flavors. We are welcoming back the golfers with an expanded pub menu and several new appetizers. We will be open on Sundays for lunch beginning at 11:30am – 4pm. The Pub Menu will be offered at this time.

Spring is also a great time of year for farmer’s markets. This year we will be making an effort to comb through the local farmer’s markets to bring you the freshest produce grown by local farmers. Supporting local farmers is great for the local economy and is also great for you as most of the vegetables are grown organically. It just doesn’t make sense to ship vegetables around the country that grow just fine right here in our state. I am also toying with the idea of having a little tomato garden at the Club somewhere. So stay tuned for more local fresh organically grown produce to enhance your palate!

Kitchen Recipe – HMCC French Onion Soup

5 Large onions (Vidalia or white work well)3 Large Red onions½ stick butter1 cup Sherry1 can or bottle Guinness (minus one sip for “taste testing”)Beef bouillon cubes (or prepared broth or stock)Chicken bouillon cubes (or prepared broth or stock)1 or 2 bay leaves1 ½ Tablespoons chopped parsley 1 Tablespoon thyme2 teaspoons black pepper½ teaspoon white pepper (optional)Your favorite croutonsSliced Swiss cheese

First we prepare the onions. Slice off the tops and bottoms of the onions and peel them. I like to slice them top to bottom so that each onion segment is roughly the same size and shape. Then, in a large pot (large enough for about a half gallon of soup) melt the butter and cook the onions over medium heat with a little salt and pepper until they are slightly wilted and starting to

change color. Stir them a few times so they cook evenly, but be careful to not overcook them at this stage as they have a ways to go. When the onions are ready, stir in the sherry. While the sherry is evaporating, I like to taste test a little of the Guinness to make sure it’s fresh. (you wouldn’t want to ruin the soup with bad beer, right?)

Meanwhile, prepare the broth. I use about a 60/40 ratio of beef to chicken broth, but you can tinker with it to suit your taste. Pour in the broth so that all the onions are submerged by an inch or so. (it should be about a half gallon total) Add the bay leaves, thyme, parsley and the black pepper. I add some white pepper as well, but I am a ground pepper aficionado. Bring the soup, uncovered, to a light boil and reduce heat and simmer for about a half hour. Presto! It’s done. Ladle the hot soup into oven safe bowls, top with croutons and Swiss cheese and place under the broiler until the cheese is melted and starting to brown. Serve it with a grilled ham and cheese and you will have some happy campers. Also, as with most soups, this keeps well and actually gets better with a day or two in the fridge.

Enjoy.

Until next time, bon appetite!Sous Chef, Aaron Theriault

GOLF SEASON’S COMING

H O P L I N E A P R I L 2 0 1 0

Greetings Members!

With all of this nice weather, if we keep our fingers crossed, golf may be here before you know it. Tim and I have been busy trying to get prepared for the golf season and

soon you will see the event sheets posted to the website and ForeTees available for registration.

I am proud to announce two programs that we started in 2009 will be coming back in 2010. We are again allowing Members from the non-golf classes to have access to the range for an annual fee. Family fee is $225 and Individual is $150. If you would like to enroll in this program, either contact the business office or email me and I will get you enrolled.

We will again be offering a “Guest Card” in 2010. We are preparing the cards now and will have them available for sale in the Golf Shop. The guest card is a Pre-Paid card that includes golf and cart privileges for 10 guests. These cards expire at the end of the year and unused rounds do not carry over. This year we have set the price at $650 for this card, lowering it from the $700 price in 2009. This card has a

savings from individual guest and cart fees of $230. We are actively trying to encourage all Members to bring guests to our Club and showcase all the Club has to offer.

In the coming weeks, I will begin sending my “weekly” updates from ForeTees. ForeTees has expanded its e-mail capabilities and I will now be able to send attachments through their system. If you have new contact information, please make sure you have updated your profile in ForeTees. If you need assistance, please let me know and I will be happy to assist.

The winter is coming to an end and spring is right around the corner. Tim and I are excited to get the season started. The new carts have arrived, along with new mats for the range. We just received the new range cart and beverage cart and I am sure all the Members will be impressed with our new equipment. Please feel free to send along any questions or comments you may have. If you need to contact me direct, please call my cell phone at (860) 817-0221.

Page 9: HOPLINE SPRING 2010

SPRING’S FAST APPROACHINGSpring is fast approaching. Prior to all of the

February snow storms, it appeared the golf course was overwintering nicely so things should be fine as we come into the spring season.

In January, a total of ten beaver were removed from the stream adjacent to the seventeenth hole. Generally, we try to coexist with nature but in this case flooding issues were becoming a concern. We tried to contact the beavers to discuss moving their work site to the right of number five green (where our main focus of tree work was) but they would have nothing to do with us. So after the negotiation attempt failed, all three generations were removed, the largest was 47lbs!

So the tree removal to the right of the fifth green and approach is now complete (no help from the beavers). The fifth green will benefit most from this work come July and August. Along with this work; trees on the upper holes were addressed for broken limbs, cross branching and limbs interfering with the golf swing. By the time you are reading this we will have addressed the trees on the lower holes. Our ongoing tree work continues to bring benefits to the turf areas. The Green Committee is aware of the strategic aspect that the trees have on the golf course. If we must remove specific trees to improve turf conditions, we do so while being sympathetic to maintaining the challenge of Hop Meadow.

Along with the normal spring clean up, specific projects to be completed before the course opens are edging the lower bunkers and finishing the clean up at the tree removal site on number five. Additionally, extra time will be needed to address a bumper crop of pine cones, possibly because of last season’s rainy weather.

For the upcoming season, we will continue with a lean staff. During the playing season, our staff size will remain at thirteen, the weekend staff of five will allow us to get the mowing and course set up done but not the bunkers (because the grass grows 24/7).

We will continue doing everything we can to give you the conditions you have been accustomed to. Going forward, patience and understanding will be needed during times of inclement weather.

As the warmer days get you in the mood to golf, please keep this in mind the criteria for opening the golf course:

1. Cup changing must be possible and cup must be able to drain excess water.2. The greens must be firm enough to support equipment and golfers (no footprints or ruts.)3. Divot replacement must be possible.

Sincerely, Erick B. Holm, C.G.C.S.

Wow, what a winter…if you spent the winter in Connecticut or went to Florida, the weather was about the same. Maybe mother nature will give us a break this year.

Hopefully, we will be outside in early April and you can start fine tuning your game. I have a few open clinics for men and women that you can take advantage of:

Open Clinics – Everyone Welcome ~ Bring a Guest ~ No Charge!

Special Spring ClinicWednesday, April 14th from 5-6pm & Sunday, April 18th from 2-4pm

Women’s Golf Clinics – No ChargeThursday, April 22nd from 9-11am & Thursday April 29th from 10-11 am (Basics)

I look forward to helping YOU enjoy all aspects of the game of golf. The Golf Committee is working with Jason and his staff and have a great golf season set up for you. Make 2010 your most enjoyable season. I am here to help you reach your dreams.

registration is ongoing so you can ignore the “register by March 1, 2010” as stated on the registration form. You have the option to mail in the form or sign into Blue Golf to pay by credit card. If anyone needs help with the registration process, please feel free to call (860-217-1208) or email me with any questions. The CWGA Tournament List is now final and I thought I would send it out for planning purposes. Last year a few of us participated in various events during the season and enjoyed the opportunity to play many of the wonderful courses around the state. This is also an excellent way to meet other women golfers. I will be in touch throughout the season so we can increase our participation level. Last year we found our time car-pooling to the events also added to the fun. Take a look and possibly pencil a few tournaments into your calendar. Think Spring!
