Let’s get those petitions turned in early for new members. Your family is counting on it. Greetings, Nobles. It's April and we have survived the winter! As spring occurs we have completed the first visitation of the year. Congratulations, Athens Shrine Club, for being first and providing a great introduction to the year. As we come out of winter and into spring, not only does hope returns anew for the year and the growing season to come, our Spring Ceremonial is on the horizon and hope springs eternal for the growth of the Shrine. As a reminder please get all petitions into the Aladdin Shrine as soon as possible for the upcoming Ceremonial on May 12. We hope to see each club and unit represented with candidates. Other accomplishments for this month include our annual Aladdin Shrine Circus. Circus Director C. J. Carter and his staff provided another wonderful circus with great acts for all to see. We appreciate the helpful Shriners and ladies who contributed to the great success of the circus. "Thank you" goes to our circus producers for another fine show. A St. Patrick’s party was held by the Hospitality Unit and the Pipes and Drums Unit where fun was had by all. Thanks, guys. A disappointing note relates to this year's Annual Kentucky Derby Party we’ve held at Scioto Downs since 2013. Sadly, it is no more. Committee Chair James Liebherr put in considerable effort, starting at the end of last year’s party, to coordinate this year’s party. Changes at Scioto Downs prevented us from using the facilities as we have in the past. The only opportunity at Scioto Downs was an outdoor party they’re throwing or small groups in the same space we previously used but for parties of six or less. Because of short notice and because of the lack of options at Scioto Downs, we are unable to start from scratch and provide the entertainment that you are used to at this event this year. We hope next year’s Potentate, with ample time to prepare, will find a way to host a fun and engaging party. I’d like to thank James for his efforts. Even though it did not come to fruition, I know he spent time and effort trying to provide fantastic entertainment for his Shrine brothers.  Thank you, James. As we move into April and the weather warms, Aladdin Temple and our Shrine clubs and units will begin to pick up speed toward fun and fellowship. We have Tabloid kick off this month in preparation for our June Tabloid Day. For those of you who don’t make the Tabloid Seminar,  send any date adjustments to Bob Stevenson so we can ensure that we are properly covering our bases for insurance and other needs. Thank you, Nobles, for another fine month. Let’s continue forward and make Aladdin Shrine a great place. by Todd Jones, Potentate

Hope Springs Eternal for Shrine Growth

Welcome to Our Family! by Robert Warner, Membership ChairmanWhat a great thing to say to a new noble, “Welcome to the Shrine family!” This is what we want to hear many times as we greet new Aladdin Shriners at the Spring Ceremonial on Saturday, May 12, 2018. The amount of new family members we adopt into our family depends on the recruitment efforts of all nobles and even the ladies. It is a family effort.

Having a large class of new Aladdin Shriners will make this Ceremonial a great success and will provide the new nobles with experiences they will remember for many years. Encouraging a fellow Mason to become an Aladdin Shriner is an investment in Freemasonry and in our Aladdin Shrine family

You can download petitions from our new website at http://www.aladdinshrine.org. Click on the "policies and forms" link under the "more" tab at the right side of the home page.

Enlarging our Aladdin Shrine family will increase the fun and fellowship at Shrine Temple events and will help grow our clubs and units. The Ceremonial fee is $140.00. An embroidered fez is $80.00 and a jeweled fez is $150.00. Please include the fez size on the application form. This year each new noble will receive a Shriner logo shirt.

This is the membership challenge for each club and unit:• Recruit one new noble for each ceremonial class• Have no suspensions• Restore one suspended noble

Meeting this challenge is doable. We can grow by gaining or restoring one noble at a time. We can achieve this membership goal by remaining committed to recruitment, restoration and retention. Please continue to reach out to suspended nobles and encourage them to be restored. Please encourage fellow nobles to pay their 2018 dues so they are not suspended in the first place.

Cincinnati Hospital by D. Dee Mowry, P.P.The February meeting of the Cincinnati Board of Governors met on February 28 and began with a 9:00 a.m. meeting of the research committee. Dr. John van Aalst, Research Director, is between surgeries at that time and the only time he is available to meet with the committee.

The board discussed goals and priorities including the impending visit from Dr. Marc Lalande, the new Vice President of Research at Shriners Hospitals. At the 10:00 a.m. meeting of the committee, Dorothy Supp, PhD. updated the committee on her research about keloid scarring and its relationship to vitamin D and colon cancer.

Local grant applications will be prepared for submission after the local peer review process is complete. From the human resources, your hospital now has 241 employees, including the researchers. The monthly retention rate for January

was 99.7%. The Joint Commission (the rating agency) has completed its work with the human resources department scoring 100% and the overall rating of your hospital showed no deficiencies. In addition, the Cincinnati Hospital has magnet status which measures excellency in nursing care (the only hospital in the Shrine system to achieve magnet status). This hospital was named one of the best places to work in the Cincinnati area in 2017 and appears to be on the way for the same honor in 2018. It is in the 99th percentile in the Press-Ganey patient satisfaction survey.

The Cincinnati Shriners Hospital is celebrating its 50th birthday this year with ongoing celebrations and events. (See ad on page 6.)Aladdin Noble Richard Clark was a visitor to the January and February board meetings.

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." — Arthur AsheIt’s April—the month of renewal, new growth, a riot of colors as the flowers return, plus a little snow here and there, a few damp rains and your taxes are due! How is that for a bunch of conflict? It’s true that April can be a real mixture of stuff, but April is Tabloid Seminar time! Yippee!

I always look forward to our few hours at the Tabloid Seminar; we have scheduled it for April 28. I wonder who I’ll see that morning. I know there are the annual regulars who attend. Most of them could put on the seminar themselves. I know we will get a few newcomers to the meeting. I am excited to see nobles become excited about our annual fundraising events for our hospitals. I love to tell the story to these new folks, and I love having the regulars share successful efforts with the hope these ideas will get passed along and become action. Most of all I hope, and say a little prayer, we will have several ladies attend. They can bring so many new ideas to us. They can take us places no man would venture and they can be sure their noble gets with the program. Come on April 28 and let’s see who attends from which groups.

This year we need to reach the $200,000 level again. While the needs of Cincinnati, Erie and Lexington continue to increase, the budgets have not. This is where we come in. It is important to bring as many dollars to them as we can so the extra things needed can happen. We also know many merchants are no longer allowing us to solicit in front of their stores. Many municipalities are limiting or outright refusing street solicitations. This is making it harder to reach our goals. We can find a hundred good reasons we can’t raise a lot. But we can find reasons we can.

We need to shift attention to direct business solicitation. We must present our program to other non-profits like VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, etc. These groups are required to donate to other charities a percentage of their income. You’d be surprised the amounts some of these groups have to give. How and whom you ask? Well, come to the seminar on April 28 from 10 a.m. - noon and hear what others are doing to have success.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 9 for Tabloid Day. Yes, we still have a day but a better idea is right now mark your calendar for tomorrow, make that “Tabloid” and then repeat every day after. That is Tabloid today. It is an everyday thing that can bring funds and recognition to your Shrine group and new members. It can be a powerful tool when done. Try it, you might like it.

We plan to have the Tabloids available for pickup the evening of the stated meeting on April 16 and at the Tabloid Seminar (April 28). Determine the amount of Tabloids you think you’ll need this year and get them early. I have seen, firsthand, the success coming from Arthur Ashe’s comments. Shriners who just take an action, go with what they have and do as much as they can bring amazing things to Tabloid and other things in Shrine and life. Nike has a spin on his quote when they say, “Just do it!” See you April 28 and bring your lady.

Beauty comes as a gift of creation. With flowers it is unquestionable that they exist as things of beauty. Along all the history of Biblical travel, little is included except two flowering blooms. Those are the lily and the tree bloom of what today we call "dogwood."

As you enjoy these blooms this spring, give thought to how refreshing they are to our feelings about spring. Again, why do we expect new growth every year? The answer in Masonic living is the belief we trust a supreme design of the Creator. Therefore, do likewise; entrust that by design we plant, cultivate and harvest another crop or yield. For each of us inside our storehouse of golden secrets (between our ears), the treasure is that we shall reap what we sow. That does not come from a keypad or computer.

Every schoolhouse of Free Masonry has had its annual inspection. But how valuable has the new harvest of new Master Men been invested into the work of our Shrine where the eye of the public sees real virtues? Someone better than me can change the manner of cultivating what they have sowed in recent years. For better crops we choose better seed or we build higher yields through cultivating or harvesting from the source! May God hear our petition of prayer. Harmony soothes most, but results speak clearly where men are lost in doing the work. How many are there who have not been asked to be one?

There is room for everyone in God's kingdom. Pick up your load and help carry forward our fun as friendship, "u" as you, with a noble having more fun in the local Shrine club nearest you. Aladdin Center holds the key to strength in increasing community pride for accomplishment. The Shriners Hospitals for Shriners are professionally staffed and our philanthropy is open to all—open for services free of fees and endowed into our future.

May we now view the future with hope for relief until our paths join and the passage ways widen to serve those who carry the yield and harvest.

Hospital Treatment Influences Patient's Choice of CareersMedical journey at Shriners Hospitals for Children shapes employee's career choice

At age 11, Kandace Stratton was diagnosed by her pediatrician with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center—Lexington for treatment. The pediatric orthopaedic surgeon recommended that Kandace be fitted by the orthotics and prosthetics department for a thoracolumbrosacral orthosis (TLSO) brace. A TLSO is the most common type of brace worn for scoliosis. The brace is made of plastic and is contoured to conform to the body. This close-fitting brace is almost invisible under clothes, as it fits under the arms and around the rib cage, lower back and hips. Kandace wore the TLSO brace for 23 hours a day for two years. At the end of the two years, Kandace underwent two major spinal fusion surgeries within four months.

Kandace spent a great deal of her teenage years as a Shriners Hospitals for Children patient. At the time, she didn’t realize how her medical journey would one day shape her career choice. Kandace and her family were very thankful and impressed by the level of care that she received, which led to Kandace

choosing to pursue nursing school. “I have always loved children and felt as though I could relate to patients since I was one!” said Kandace. Kandace received her nursing assistant certificate in May 2009, and was hired at the then Lexington Shriners Hospital, working on the inpatient unit while she continued to work to obtain her nursing degree. For the next few years, she worked at a job she loved preparing for the career she would love. In May 2012, Kandace graduated from nursing school. As a registered nurse, she worked the same shift as she had for three years as an aide.

“God’s plan for my life was to be a voice to these amazing children I am privileged to care for. I try and use my experience as a patient to help these children and teens through their recovery,” said Kandace. “At 14 I was too young to realize it, but I now know why my medical journey led me here. Shriners Hospital is a special place and I hold it dear. I am blessed that God brought me back where my heart will always belong.”

Lexington Shriners Hospital transitioned to a new model of care in April, 2017 and was renamed Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center. The facility now operates as a 100 percent outpatient pediatric orthopaedic medical center. The move provided Kandace with an opportunity to shift from an RN on the inpatient unit to PACU. In addition to caring for children as an RN, she contacts all patients scheduled for surgery at the ambulatory surgery center several days prior, to provide specific details and answer any questions. Kandace was recently filmed by Lexington Shriners Medical Center as the host of the pre-operative surgery video that will be made available to all patients and families preparing for surgery.

“We have such a wonderful history of countless success stories, of brave and brilliant children who come to us with a variety of medical needs. They move on to have successful and healthy lives of their own. Sometimes, such as with Kandace, we are lucky to have them return and give back their professionalism and love to the very organization that cured them,” said Elizabeth Martin, RN, manager of surgical services and infection preventionist at Lexington Shriners Medical Center. “We are blessed to have Kandace a part of the Shriners Hospitals for Children organization.”

Brothers will travel to Evansville, IN for the national SDA Convention. Aladdin will host that convention in 2020. We are expecting between 250 and 300 nobles with ladies to attend; it is a big a big event. Planning for the second section for the May Ceremonial is continuing. Expect to see something fun and different. Have you signed up a candidate yet?

Besides his duties on the Potentate’s staff, Matt Rumer is Worshipful Master of his Lodge in Washington C. H. this year.

Past Director and Past Chief Bill Dunn was hospitalized in late February. At the time of this writing, no report was available.

Sadly, we report the passing of Charles Jones. A member of the Brutal Brothers since 2003 and the father of Illustrious Sir Todd and Chief of Staff Clay Jones, Charley’s presence is missed by us.

It’s getting hard to come up with a worthwhile article for the Lamp every month, given our lack of activity. I could fabricate something about another successful Aladdin Shrine Circus, but it will not have happened by the time the article is due. It would be tempting fate to declare victory before the last show, let alone no shows at all.

But I will crawl out on a limb and say I’m confident that Frank Swiatek was, once again, successful in finding enough willing and able volunteers among our brethren to provide ushers for the event. For next year we need to uncross our fingers and discuss a permanent solution to the problem Frank has faced. As we know, the pool of potential help is limited, and it is only Frank’s genius that pulls us through every year with support from the Past Masters Unit and other sources. Ushering is one of the most critical jobs at the circus and continues to need all non-committed Aladdin Shriners to help. Your thoughts on this matter are solicited. Call Frank or Director Jack Bonn.

April Birthdays: Congratulations go to Arthur Baz and Ed Kauffman. Many happy returns!

As I compose this article in mid-March, there is snow on the ground, the temperature is 25 degrees and many of us are saying, "I am ready for real spring." When you are reading this in April, the spring flowers will bloom and the birds will build nests. The news media is full of stories about the third nor'easter in two weeks. I'm thinking, living in south central Ohio is not so bad. Actually, it's pretty good.

For many of us spring is a time for planning and preparation for a busy summer. Tabloid in June and fundraisers at the Ross County Fair need manpower. If your help is requested, say "yes" if you possibly can. If you want to stay abreast of what's going on, attend as many meetings as you can. There are nice folks up there who you can rub elbows with. This suggestion applies to all the clubs and units. You can't find any nicer folks anywhere.

At Ross County we meet on the fourth Thursday. Social hour is at 6:00 p.m. and dinner is at 7:00 p.m. We have good cooks. Our ladies and visitors are welcome. See you there. Come on up!

by Roger FausnaughPickawayVice President Mike Laws called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Noble Greg Shires gave the opening prayer and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Vice President Mike thanked Noble Kevin Hulse and his wife, Deb, for preparing our meal for the evening. It was appreciated. Noble Rusty Green read the minutes of January and Noble Greg Shires made a motion and a second was made by Noble Kevin to accept the minutes. Noble Jim Willeford presented the financial report, and a motion was made by Noble Greg and second by Noble Jeff Reams to accept the report. All nobles voted in favor of both.

We had two new communications for the club—one was a "thank you" note from Past Potentate Noble Jon Kinney and his lady, Cindy, for our support during his year and the other was from Pickaway Heath District on information for the upcoming year.

A sympathy card was sent to Noble Charlie Galloway on death  his wife. Noble Carl Hemming introduced nobles from Pike County Shrine—Nobles Gerald Remy, Brad Burns, Scott Martin and Ron Bixler. They requested to use our building again this year March 23 to stop and feed approximately 88 children and 15 chaperons returning from the Aladdin Shrine Circus. We are always glad to help and the vote was unanimous.

During our business meeting the nobles from Pike County discussed how they ran their golf outing and provided paperwork to help us with our upcoming golf outing.

Roger Fausnaugh is updating our membership records with the Aladdin Shrine. Noble Mike informed us that Tabloid Day is June 2. Nobel Kevin reported the Pickaway County Fair needs extra help especially on Saturday and Sunday.

There were nine members and four guests at the meeting. Vice President Mike closed the meeting at 7:35 p.m. and Noble Greg gave the closing prayer.

Kambri by Dick Brixner

Kambri Shrine Club held the annual dinner meeting at the local hospital, SEORMC, on March 15, with 35 nobles and guests. President Tim Oliver introduced special guests Past Potentate Bill Estell and his lady, Carol. Tom Fisher gave the prayer. Our menu for the evening included a variety of salads, vegetables, pies, rolls, crackers, green beans, rice, potatoes, drinks, and a choice or either beef tenderloin or Chicken Tosca. The food and service was superb.

Co-chairs Dr. Mike Sarap and Tom Stemmer presented the program about the capital campaign to build a new cancer center. It will be "a building of hope and healing." Dr. Mike gave the background which included eye opening statistics for our immediate area and included the past and highlighted the future. It indicated that cancer cases are expected to increase 40-50% over the next several years due to programs that diagnose cancer and the aging population. Over the last three years, oncology cases have increased by 45%. The current facility is too small and government regulations require a large expenditure for the existing building to be compliant. There is no acreage to expand. The new cancer center will be in front of and connected to the current hospital. It will be a three-story building with all the best equipment and will comply. The total cost of the project will be $18.7 million dollars. The square footage will increase from 6,000 to 22,000.

Dr. Mike addressed the current statistics, projected statistics, over-all rating of our hospital, and highlighted the services available in our community. There is no need to go elsewhere. Our hospital rates in the top 5% of all hospitals for patient care experience. Our hospital has 30 straight years of being accredited. SEORMC has entered agreements/affiliations with Ohio Health and Nationwide Childrens Hospitals. Our hospital assures all levels of the community have access to health care and preventative exams, regardless of their ability to pay. Tom Stemmer presented some additional stats regarding the number of persons in Guernsey County who will need cancer treatment over the next couple of years. He used those in attendance, and showed the number of trips to be made for treatment. It was an eye opening example to the changes coming.

They expect to break ground later this year and they have opened the campaign to the public hoping to raise an additional $4 million from the community. Kambri Shrine Club presented a check to Dr. Mike and Tom to show our support. (See photo.)

We are fortunate to have a hospital and community leaders with visions to continue to upgrade the services for the citizens of Guernsey County and the surrounding area. If you or your organization are interested, I am certain the hospital can schedule a program. If you would like to support, all checks will be appreciated.

President Tim thanked our speakers for an excellent program and wished them well in fundraising. He thanked everyone for coming and asked Tom Fisher to offer a closing prayer.

The next time you see our propane grill, please pay attention to its condition. Special thanks go to Denny Patterson and his company for the upgrades to the grill. It looks like it's new.

Upcoming Events: Aladdin's Potentate will pay us a visit on May 10 at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Hall. Our chicken barbecue will be May 12. Tabloid Day is June 2 and we need all nobles involved and hitting the streets for raising funds for our hospitals. The health fair at City Park is June 14. The annual golf scramble is scheduled for June 23. We need volunteers to help and we need golf teams, door prizes and hole sponsorships. Refer to future newsletters for additional dates of importance.

Nobles, please take part in your club. Did you check on the updates with our three Shriners' Hospitals, Erie, Cincinnati and Lexington? These hospitals will receive the monies we raise on Tabloid Day. Nobles, the Lamp is how you stay connected. Read and become more education on our great organization. Kambri Shrine Club is yours; come out and see what we do and how we have fun.

by Phillip HarbargerAladdin Shrine BandMarch has been a busy month for the band; we have been practicing getting ready for

what comes next. What comes next is the Aladdin Shrine Circus! I will give updated circus news from the Aladdin Band and Dixieland Band in the May edition of the Lamp.

The first official parade of the year will be in April at the Pike County Dogwood Festival Parade. The Aladdin Dixieland Band will play its wonderful sounds there. The Aladdin Concert Band had three performances at the Aladdin Shrine Circus and is preparing for the May Ceremonial. They will prepare for the Memorial Day Parade held in Worthington.

The Aladdin Dance Band is using a few of the Tuesday night rehearsals to prepare for the Spring Fling on May 18, 8:00—11:00 p.m. We hope to have a lot of nobles and ladies come out and listen to music of the ages performed by the Aladdin Dance Band. Come out and cut a rug too. If you are members of a local dance club, bring the whole group out that night. There will be more information on the cost in May’s Aladdin's Lamp.

May is just around the corner and Dave Colburn oversees the Aladdin Band Ladies Party. He reported the cost is $25.00 a person or $50.00 a couple—what a deal. It will be a night of good fellowship and a chance to take your ladies out. Please keep checking your email for further information. The event's date is May 1, social is at 6:00 p.m. and dinner is at 7:00 p.m.

Band members who have not paid their 2018 band membership ($10.00) should contact Jim Shackson, Jim Esswein or Dave Colburn. Every little bit helps the band.

Medical Unit by D. Dee Mowry, PP

Licking County by Mike HammondNobles, after two months of rest, it's good to be " back in the saddle" and back to having our monthly meetings. We had a great attendance of 27 nobles at our March meeting and another fine meal by Nona Bounds.

Several Past Club Presidents were recognized as well as our MSA members. President John Ricket talked about our planned Tabloid Days outing. Dates for this will be announced in April.

Little League baseball is slated in June also and a schedule will be forthcoming, Please remember next year will be our 75th year of little league baseball in Licking County and a large parade, sanctioned by the Potentate, will bring in many Shrine units to our city. Planning has already started for this event, so be ready to help when asked. Past President Jim Rosser is in charge of the parade.

Several Nobles attended a meeting of the Hartford Fair Board and set up a contract which was approved by the nobility. Be ready to help at the fair.

The 5K run/walk committee has had two meetings to prepare for our second annual event which will be held in October. Things are coming together and another great run/walk is in the making at Gellar Park in Heath. There will be more information on this later.

We are having wonderful fellowship at our meetings, so come join the fun and good food. We meet on the first Thursday of the month at noon in the Heath Masonic complex.

The Aladdin Shrine Medical Unit held its March meeting in West Jefferson at a popular spot for Shrine events, Ann and Tony’s. Fifteen members and guests attended. President Ed Badger called the meeting to order and Ill. Sir Dee Mowry gave the invocation and led the pledge.

Business was conducted prior to the dinner hour. Long time member Tom Chidester, 90 plus years old, was made an honorary lifetime member by the unanimous vote of the unit members. Tom lives in a residential facility and has been a faithful member of the Aladdin Medical Unit since 1980.

Medical Unit updated by-laws, recently approved by Ill. Sir Jon Kinney and Recorder, Ill. Sir Don Goodman, call for two members of the unit to be elected to the nominating committee. This action is done in the even numbered years. They will join the director and assistant director in comprising the complete committee and will present a slate of officers for election at the annual meeting in October. Those elected to represent the unit were Tom Branscomb and out-going president, Ed Badger.

The information for the new directory is almost complete—thanks to all the members who responded to the questionnaire.

The educational component prepared for evening, fainting and the care of its victims, was postponed as the room was not conducive to a program such as this. Quartermaster Ill. Sir Mike Tyne circulated the work sheet for unit members who will provide first aid coverage at the circus.

Worthington by Bob StevensonBring your bag of weed! WOW… what an invitation! On April 5 the Worthington Shrine Club will have the Ohio Nurseryman, Noble Fred Hower, for his annual visit to talk all things that grow! As always, Fred will look at any weed you might bring and give you advice on how to handle it. This is our most popular meeting and all are welcome at 6:00 p.m. at Brookside Golf and Country Club. Call Wayne Miller, 614-846-2921, for reservations.

The annual Potentate's visitation will be on May 3. Come join us and the Aladdin Divan with Illustrious Sir Todd Jones and Lady Jennifer for an evening for fellowship. You will receive updated information on the doings at Aladdin Shrine. This will be at Brookside Golf and County Club beginning at 6:00 p. m.

Our June 7 meeting will be a special event held at Calvin and Terry Smith's. It will be “Dinner by the Pond,” a casual summer's evening gathering and it promises to be a great hit. Look for more details later, but put it on your calendar.

Perhaps you know that we will not be working at the Memorial Tournament this year. The folks in charge hired a professional security company to handle the gates. Worthington Shrine Club will not take part in the alternative they offered. We don’t know if this will be a one year thing, but we will keep everyone posted if things change for next year.

We will take part in the Memorial Day Parade in Worthington on Monday, May 28. As last year, we will have an eight passenger golf cart for those who wish to ride, and those wishing to march are more than welcome. We will assemble on Plymouth Street and times will be announced. There we be no after party this year but please join us in this great celebration and tradition of Worthington.

As always, if you have questions, please contact one of our officers.

Director Bob Warner opened the March meeting in the Oasis with the usual fanfare after another dinner by Roy Heflin Catering. Pastor Stephen White

led the membership in the prayer. Secretary Joey Brooks read a letter from Sled Hockey thanking the Provost Unit for its support during the last year.

Committee reports included Membership Chairman Jeff Reams presenting the first reading of one new candidate. Art Wilson, of the

transportation committee, reported that the Provost Paddy Wagon is still in the shop for a new toilet so it will be ready for parades and other

activities the season.Provost Sunshine Committeeman Bob Albright reported that George Stowe was

recovering from a knee replacement.Quartermaster Barney Barnitz has badge holders and other items available to the

membership. The first of ten Provost Unit parades this year will be on April 29 at the Pike County Dogwood Festival. Members will distribute handouts for the children.

Regarding fundraising activities, Dave Peters spoke more about the details of the Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled May 28 - June 03, 2018. All members should to reserve as many days on their calendars as possible to take part. Director Warner is working on signing a contract to work the week before and the three days of the Farm Science Review in September. Past Director Rob Hartsell encouraged all members to sign up for the 2018 Tabloid $1.00 program. Any member signing up should mention the Provost Unit so the unit receives the credit.

Upcoming events include the Santee Golf Outing on April 8-12, a Cinco de Mayo party in the ballroom on May 4 and the upcoming Ceremonial on May 12. The Potentate’s Ball will be May 26 and a stag fishing trip to Lake Erie will be June 10-11.

April birthdays are James Bodi, Joey Brooks, Dale Cline, Fred Goldstein, Rodney Holdren, Robert Laird, Ralph Mason, Randall Smith, Tony Ward and Stewart Webster.

Union County by Charles Gill & Dave BrinsonHello Brother Nobles, far and near. Last month I used Secretary Dave Brinson’s excellent minutes to showcase all the happenings at the UCSC. Dave captured it again so well for this month, that this article is his, and his alone. Great work Noble Brinson!

We held the monthly meeting of the UCSC at Timberlake Golf Course. Social hour began at 6:00 p.m. and our meeting followed at 7:00 p.m. Fifteen members, our Divan representative and several special guests attended. The meal was fantastic and enjoyed by all.

President Jim Ulmer gave special recognition to the staff of Timberlake for the excellent service and meal considering the short notice they had to prepare for our group. Dave Patterson led the prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance followed.

Divan Representative Art Wilson gave a short presentation of upcoming events sponsored by the Aladdin Shrine. All events are in the Aladdin's Lamp. Art mentioned that he had presented a check for $13,000 to the Cincinnati Shrine Hospital on behalf of the Hillbilly Club. Art continued by outlining the "Legacy" program and spoke about growing our membership.

Old Business - President Jim Ulmer had  Mark Nelson give us an update of the raffle scheduled this spring for the special edition Stand for America .22 caliber Henry Rifle. After a discussion members decided 125 tickets are to be printed. They will cost $20 each and will be available for 60 days. A drawing for the winner and an alternate will occur at our first meeting in June. The club will purchase the rifle at Black Wing Shooting Center in Delaware. Members agreed to proceed and to begin ticket sales in April and May until all tickets are sold. The club expects to net the UCSC $1,200 from this fundraiser.

Club members approved the minutes from the February meeting.Members discussed payment for the club's banner at the Aladdin Shrine Circus. In previous

years, payment alternated between the in Tin Lizzy Club and UCSC. The discussion was tabled until the April meeting after the next Tin Lizzy meeting.

The treasurer's report was approved.Cans 4 Kids - The trailer is full and ready to take to the recycler ($710). The hope and

expectation is that we will fill the trailer one more time before Tabloid begins in June.Tabloid - Tabloid sales will be June 8-9 in Marysville and the club will have a second

Walmart location in Marion on June 15-16. Bill Bumgarner is working to add the Walmart in Delaware. We need manpower for these days so please mark your calendars as these are big fundraisers for our club. Remember this event is more successful with more members volunteering just a few hours of their time.

Muirfield - Lee Walk reported that the good folks at the Memorial Tournament will not require our help at the gates this year, but need our assistance with parking at the Sports Ohio facility. This change would result in a net loss of revenue of approximately $2,000 to the club. After some discussion it was decided to decline the invitation to work the tournament this year and focus our fundraising in different areas.

Tin Lizzy - The next Tin Lizzy meeting will be held at Luckys on Wednesday March 21.Special Guest - The best portion of the meeting was held for last. Dave Patterson

introduced our special guests for the evening: Marie Patterson (no relation to Dave), her daughter Anna (special needs child), Josie, Anna's service dog Midnight, and dog trainer, Sarah.

Maria recapped Anna's medical condition and history of surgeries. Special needs aside, Anna wants to live as normal a life as possible and has the same wants and needs of any other child her age. She has a medical condition that holds her back physically but doesn't define her as child. Anna and her family are an inspiration to the rest of us by not accepting her condition as a sentence, but a challenge to meet head on with strength and the determination to live a fulfilling life. To overcome Anna's medical condition, she is receiving a service dog that will allow her to be more active with fewer physical restrictions while offering protection when Anna needs the extra help.

Sarah, Midnight's trainer, presented an overview of what is involved in training a service dog and gave a short demonstration how Midnight will be able to help Anna live a more normal life. The process of preparing a service dog involves great skill by experienced handlers and a great deal of time. A service dog is not inexpensive as you might expect. Anna's service dog, Midnight, will cost the family approximately $14,000 in addition to the other costs involved in medical treatments, etc.

Nobles, Anna is the child Shriners have pledged to help—a child who wants to be normal and a child who wants to be a productive member of society. She is a child who refuses to let her life be defined by a condition with which she was born. She chooses to fight to be every bit the child and person the rest of us take for granted through the blessings God has given us.

Anna's story reminds me of a quote by Henry Ford. "Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you're right." I believe Anna thinks she can, but she needs our help. Because of that, UCSC has agreed to donate $500 toward Anna's service dog.

"Our donation is wonderful and appreciated by Anna's family, but there are too many more Anna's out there. We, as the Union County Shrine Club and Shriners in general, have made a pledge to help these kids. We need numbers to be effective. Please let us challenge ourselves to do what is possible for each of us, to help provide the help these kids need and want. Thank you for all you already have done and continue to do every day." Jim Ulmer - President UCSC.

Aladdin Arms by Dennis Gongwer
