Not the Classrooms of Today
Collaborate, Communicate, & Create the Future
P21 & CCSS Alignment
The CCSS explicitly call for, and integrate, higher-order thinking skills as a means to achieving career and college readiness for all students.
The CCSS have established widespread consensus around a national baseline for college and career readiness which includes a focus on rigorous core academic content mastery along with competencies like critical thinking, reasoning, communication, and collaboration.
The CCSS documents establish critical thinking, reasoning, communication, and media/information/technology in ELA and mathematics as key performance outcomes around which curricula and assessments should be focused.
-Partnership for 21st Century Skills (2011)
Why 4Cs?
“Today’s students need critical thinking and problem-solving skills not just to solve the problems of their current jobs, but to meet the challenges of adapting to our constantly changing workforce.”
-Ken Kay, CEO of EdLeader21
Arguments
Dilute content? No, should enrich content learning when integrated
Add-on? No, good practice and teaching strategies that should be utilized every day
CCSS? Include increased emphasis on 4Cs, especially critical thinking & communication
AP Exams? Redesigned to emphasize critical thinking and problem solving
Arguments
Curriculum & instruction impact? Deemphasize memorization; increase in project-based learning
Professional development? PLCs to collaboratively improve classroom practices
Assessments? PARCC emphasizes critical thinking, problem solving, and applied knowledge; portfolio assessments, performance-based assessments, and capstone projects
Arguments
Technology? 21st century students must harness technology
Higher education? Building it into curriculum for preservice teachers
ELL? Enhance skills and make difficult academic content concepts accessible
Students with special needs? ALL students will need the 4Cs to achieve the new global economy; authentic learning to solve real world problems

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Looking at problems in a new way, linking
learning across subjects and disciplines
One cannot learn well without thinking well
Leads students to develop other skills, such as higher level of concentration, deeper analytical abilities, and improved thought processing
Connections to the Other Cs
Creative thinking skills—produces & assesses, generates & judges the products of thoughts
Communication—examine, then analyze, interpret, and evaluate it
Collaboration—involves teamwork & cooperation; includes both technology & people from a variety of backgrounds
Communication
Sharing thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions
Must be able to analyze & process the overwhelming amount of communication in today’s lives
Oral and written communication are among the top four skills sought in the workforce
Connections to the Other Cs
Collaboration—working effectively with diverse teams, accomplish a common goal, & assume shared responsibility
“Communication cannot be effective unless the message is received and understood.”
Interconnection—solve verbal conflicts, develop friendships
Collaboration Working together to reach a goal
—putting talent, expertise, and smarts to work
Essential due to the nature of how today’s work is accomplished in team (even global teams)
Diversity brings multiple individual and cultural perspectives into the collaboration and generates more knowledge
Creativity and Innovation
Trying new approaches to get things done equals innovation and invention
Today, creativity and innovation are key drivers in the global economy
Daniel Pink, Sir Kenneth Robinson, Howard Gardner, Richard Florida
Connections to the Other Cs
Innovation—social component & requires: Adaptability Leadership Teamwork Interpersonal skills
Capacity to innovate is linked to the ability to connect with others through communication & collaboration

Annotate Images
Any app that allows you to upload an image and add text/drawings on top
Skitch connects directly to Evernote Doodle Buddy works well on devices
with older operating systems Find a real example of object & take a
picture/then label it Make activities more relevant & real-
world See the pictures to learn from their
understandings & look at reteaching opportunities.

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” Use the cameras on devices for students
to capture and explain their learning. Application of learning to world around
them. Summarize lesson. Word mapping (on top of image for
inspiration) Word identification through annotations
