HOPE IN THE DARKNESS
Hope in the Darkness National Walk for Youth Mental Health is a cross-country walk for youth mental health that will be led by police officers from across the country this Spring 2018.
The west coast leg of the walk began on Tuesday, May 15 in Old Masset, Haida Gwaii. They will walk the Highway of Tears from Prince Rupert to Terrace. The journey will then continue from the Tsawwassen First Nation toward Winnipeg and will feature a team of Indigenous police officers and walkers throughout.
The walk is aimed at bringing together youth, families, communities, police, and mental health service providers to walk the TransCanada Highway to Winnipeg, Manitoba from the east and west coasts of Canada. Artists, musicians, athletes and dignitaries will also lend a helping hand to support youth mental health in Canada by joining the walk through various parts of the journey this spring and summer.
All community members are invited to come out on Thurs., May 24 in support of the walkers as they continue on their journey east from Tsawwassen First Nation. Estimated departure time is 9 am.
For more information, visit hopeinthedarkness.ca or search “Hope in the Darkness” on Facebook.

SEASONAL CATCH MONITORS NEEDED
The Natural Resource Department will be seeking individuals for seasonal catch monitoring during the salmon gillnet fishery in the summer/early fall. Training will be provided. As this is on call work, shift times may vary. Please contact the Natural Resource Department for more details.
COMMERCIAL SALMON LICENCE DRAW POSTPONED The draw for the 4 commercial salmon licences has been postponed until early June due to potential changes in licensing requirements pending from DFO. (There is a possibility that the original vessel lengths will be restored on these licences, which means that fishers with longer vessels would also become eligible to apply.) We will be accepting additional commercial salmon applications until further notice. Fishers who have longer vessels are welcome to prepare an application; however, it is important to note that the changes have not yet been 100% confirmed. We will notify fishers once a decision has been finalized, and will confirm a new draw date ASAP.
Application packages can be picked up at TFN’s main office reception. Thank you and we apologize for any inconvenience. Please contact the Natural Resource Department if you have any questions.

UPGRADING OUR ASSETS TO BETTER SERVE OUR CUSTOMERS In an effort to serve you better, BC Ferries will be replacing causeway shoreline protection
PROJECT OVERVIEW: In 2007 progressive erosion was identified as an issue at Tsawwassen Terminal. Erosion caused by ordinary exposure to extreme weather conditions is now threatening the stability of the causeway, beach access roadway, power and water utilities. Shoreline erosion is gradually reducing the foreshore footprint. Continued public access to the beach and boat launch will not be possible unless stabilization measures are implemented. Phase 1 – 2 shoreline stabilization improvements were completed in 2013 and addressed operationally critical seaward areas. Phase 3 will target remediation to 1,300m on the south side and 200m on the north side of the Causeway, to protect the roadway and civil services within it. Environmental Assessments have been conducted and a Management Plan implemented. Phase 3 is scheduled the summer of 2018 to take advantage of daytime low tides and minimize environmental impact. The work will be completed under City of Delta noise bylaw requirements. Driftwood, topsoil and beach cobble will be removed and stockpiled. Subsurface rock reinforcement will be installed along the contours of the foreshore. Armour rock will be placed along the roadway. The topsoil, beach cobble and driftwood will be reinstalled to preserve the natural appearance of the beach. The project is phased in sections to allow portions of the beach to reopen to the public as the work progresses through the remaining sections.

Members, please be advised that BC Ferries will be undertaking shoreline stabilization work along the ferry causeway beginning May 7. The work will require temporary closures of the ferry causeway beach, access roadway, and boat launch from the BC Ferries property line seaward.
