Handwriting is the end outcome of all early mark making. As well as building gross motor skills, children need to develop the fne motor control required to hold and manipulate a writing tool. Some of the key actions required are: grip strength, pinch strength and eye to hand coordination also known as visual motor integration. In order that children eventually acquire a legible, fuent and fast handwriting style, they need to develop additional skills including: recognition of pattern, language to talk about shapes and movements and the main handwriting movements involved in the three basic letter shapes of : l, c, r.

our practitioners

say...

We encourage mark making in everything we do, to prepare the children for when they are learning to write. We often fnd children walking round with clipboard and pens, copying what we do, so developing their writing skills through role play by providing writing equipment to encourage emergent writing and books in areas about particular topics to promote the correct formation through recognition.

Linzi and Karen Nursery Practitioners Budding Wood Nursery

Early mark-making in babies and toddlers is a physical and sensory experience that lay the foundations of early writing. All children in my home are given the opportunity to draw, paint and write as part of their daily routine. These marks then begin to have meaning and develop into symbols, letters and words. Wherever we are and whatever we are doing there is always a clipboard and pencil to hand.

Anna Healy, Childminder

Writing skills are developed through using children’s interest as a stimulus. In the writing area different resources would be made available for children to access during child initiated times for example, writing paper, note pads, diaries, plain paper, rough paper, cards and envelopes, shopping lists, themed paper etc. Drama and role play is also a useful way of developing imagination and dialogue for story writing. Children would story map the book of the week and act out different parts of the story. Writing tools would also be available throughout the different learning areas, for example, shopping list and telephone numbers in the home corner. Design sheets in the construction area and junk modelling area. Post it notes in the investigation area for children to record investigations.

Bilingual integration is important in developing writing skills, but allowing children to learn to control both the right and left side of the body, one side holding the pen, the other the paper. A tip is to play ‘Simon Says’ with a twist: Ask the children simultaneously to perform one action with one hand (pat your head) and a different action with the other (rub your tummy).
