We at Hospice of Central New York and Hospice of the Finger Lakes are shining a deserving light on our most enduring and faithful donors, and sharing what has inspired their devotion to Hospice. Patricia “Pat” and Peter Garner-Richards are our very longest continuous donors. Having given a gift in support of Hospice every single year since 1988, they represent a third of a century of loving care and support. Learning about the need for Hospice volunteers through their church, this felt like the right way for them to contribute to those in need in their community. Soon after, Pat joined Hospice as a full-time staff member when the opportunity arose. Peter came on as a volunteer, visiting with Hospice patients to keep them company, and engage them in their daily lives. When asked why Hospice means so much to him, Peter explained that “it is a privilege to be with people” in this stage of their life. He recalled visiting his own mother at the end of her life. The level of insensitivity he experienced by the staff at her hospital – who insisted that they leave the room in her final moments so that they could clean - stung him deeply, and motivated him to provide the best companion care he could. After retirement, Pat volunteered alongside Peter as a couple. She looked back on how the two of them, “would be ready to go on a minute’s notice”, to be by the side of someone needing that human connection. “It’s just something that’s a part of me, part of how I care for people, and I’m very happy to do it”. She recalls being impressed by the Hospice nurses and the level to which they would go to treat the human spirit, as well as the body. She fondly remembered one patient who had always wanted to go to Hawaii, and how the nurses surprised her with a luau at her home, and how “that’s the sort of thing they did”. They haven’t been able to volunteer for some time now, but still support the good work that needs to be done. When asked why it was important to them still to provide financial support, even after years of having volunteered, Peter said, “Hospice helps people to live their lives to whatever extent they want to.

Peter came on as a volunteer, visiting with Hospice patients to keep themcompany, and engage them in their daily lives.

When asked why Hospice means so much to him, Peter explained that “it is a privilege to be with people” in this stage of their life. He recalled visiting his own mother at the end of her life. The level of insensitivity heexperienced by the staff at her hospital – who insisted that they leave the room in her final moments so that they could clean - stung him deeply, and motivated him to provide the best companion care he could.

Pat and I wholeheartedly believe in the mission of Hospice”.

Celebrating Life Through Cooking & Music wasan incredible success thanks to our amazingsupporters. This unique event allowed attendees to join in a guided, virtual cooking class using a curated basket filled with amazing Italian treats and ingredients! For those who didn’t participate in the cooking portion, we also had a silent

auction, raffles, and live music! Together, we exceeded our fundraising goal and were able to raise just over $12,500! We want to be sure to thank our generous sponsors of this event – without them we would not have been able to reach our goal! Finally, an enormous thank you to Sam, owner of Vince's Gourmet Imports, and Donna, our amazing instructor from Vince's. You were the ingredients to our success!

Registration forms are available from our website at hospicecny.org/camp-healing-hearts, or call theHospice Grief Center at (315) 634-2208.

Getting Your COVID-19 Vaccination from Hospice's Dr. Judy Setla

Have a Computer? Google: “Am-I-eligible.covid19vaccine”, to find locations, and open appointments.

No Computer? For seniors 65+ in Onondaga County, call (315) 679-4099 to schedule. You also can visit or call local pharmacies directly. Some may even be able to give you a shot right then.

Remember, the vaccine itself is free, but some places charge an administration fee.

Two weeks after your completed vaccination(s) you can: • Gather indoors with other fully vaccinated people without wearing masks or social distancing, as well

as others not yet vaccinated, as long as those people are at low risk of serious illness from the virus. • Fully vaccinated individuals can forgo testing and quarantining following a known COVID-19 expo-

sure, as long as they are not experiencing symptoms.

CDC says vaccinated people should continue to do the following: • Wear a well-fitted mask and distance in public, and avoid medium and large-sized gatherings.• Wear masks and distance when visiting unvaccinated people (and those with unvaccinated family

members) at increased risk for COVID-19. • Get tested if having COVID-19 symptoms. Though unlikely, it’s still possible to contract it.

We still do not know if a fully vaccinated person can carry and transmit the virus while feeling well. But all the vaccines dramatically reduce your chances of becoming seriously ill should you contract COVID-19.

Laura’s Story of Hope

Three months later, Laura felt ready. Ready to take a step toward healing by putting down on paper an expression of appreciation, a reflection on theexperience inspired by glimpses of hope, and an acknowledgement of change.

Hope means something different for everyone. Over the past year, hopeappeared in places that Laura (Pellegrino) Bremer never expected.

“I guess I never really understood Hospice…,” she reflects as she shares her story. “The Hospice staff saw a person and saw beyond his illness. There were so many times my dad was ready to quit but you all gave him hope. What are we as a society if we don’t have hope?”

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Amid a pandemic you all found a way to partner with our family and give my Dad a chance to complete his unfinished business with dignity. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Laura allowed us to share her story in our Spring Appeal that went out in March. To date, the response from our community has been remarkable. We thank Laura for sharing her story and providing hope for others. Hospice is not about dying, it is about making the most of the time you have together.

Laura Bremer with her father, Carmine J. Pellegrino

Hospice Wish List

Why Does Hospice Need THAT?Why Does Hospice Need THAT?Many items on our Wish List fulfill an obvious need. Others, however, require a little explanation…

What is a TracFone and what is it used for?A TracFone is a pre-paid, no-contract mobile phone. Occasionally Hospice has patients without a phone. TracFones and pre-paid minute cards enable patients and/or their families to reach us when needed, and allow us to schedule our visits with them. TracFones and pre-paid minutes cards are available widely, at many of your favorite retail and drug stores.

Why would you need portable door bells?Portable doorbells are handy if a patient is in a room away from family and they need to get their attention. If someone is doing chores in another part of the house, or the patient is unable to call out to them, the doorbell is a great way to communicate!

Do you really need XL-sized twin sheets? XL-sized sheets are needed because they have to fit special mattresses - much like dorm room beds.

Do donated items really need to be new?Due to health and safety concerns, there just isn't any way around that.

If you would like to donate from our Wish List, items must be new, as we cannot accept used items. If you have any questions please call us at (315) 634-1100.

Rebecca Auyer of InspireCare of CNY (L), presents Wish List items to Development Director, Laurie Simpson (R)
