Dear Tournament Participant,

Welcome to the campus of Southwestern Adventist University! I am so happy that you, your team, and your coaches have chosen to be a part of Southwestern’s 21st Annual Hoops Classic.

During the tournament you will have many opportunities to demonstrate your team spirit and showcase your talent as a basketball player. I hope you have an enjoyable time and that you will have opportunity to make new friends while you are here.

I invite you to be a student at Southwestern Adventist University. At Southwestern, there are many opportuni-ties in which you can be involved: Student Government, the Honors Program, Academic Clubs, Campus Ministries, Athletics, and much more. With 58 majors, there is something for almost everyone. I recently chose Southwestern because of the deep spiritual focus, the emphasis on academic excellence, and the friendly family feel one experiences while on campus. I know you will experience these as well when you choose to come to Southwestern Adventist University.

Play hard, be safe, and God bless each one of you!

Dear Participant:

I can’t believe it’s that time of the year again. Our very own version of March Madness descends upon Keene. Four days on the hardwood to test your mettle, to be able to earn a medal that can proudly be placed on the mantle of accolades at home. Five to seven games to showcase your gravity defying skills, your slight of hand magic, your missile trajectory marksmanship and your stealth and staunch defensive prowess.

You’ve been gifted to play the game you love, but more importantly you’ve been blessed. Blessed by many that have shaped you and your teammates to be the young men and women that define you beyond your impact on the court. You have been consecrated by the I AM to soar well above the rim, to reach heights that are attainable through your partnership with and in HIM. It is my prayer that you give it your all, brush off mistakes, pick one another up and celebrate victories whether they show up on the scoreboard or not.

To you seniors, savor the sweet, sweet moments of the 21st, for we bid you adieu. Thank you for making us your January “rest stops” throughout your high school journey. Southwestern Adventist University has been blessed by your presence. As you make plans, keep us in mind; we’d love to assist in making your next stay a little more permanent. We’d be honored if you chose to make our campus your home away from home this fall semester.

To all that has happened—say, thanks and to all that is yet to come—say, YES!

Yes, we eagerly await what is in store during our time together throughout this year’s Hoops Classic.

Blessings to all the ballers in HIS house.

James TheVice President for Student Services

Statement of Purpose

I. To develop Christ-like character through a quality athletic program, with attention given to fellowship, respect for opponents, level of play and competitive and recreational fun.

II. To allow for participation that will be conducted in such a manner as to emphasize the learning of athletic skills and sportsmanship.

III. To provide an opportunity for the development of character, self-respect, social grace, physical dexterity and personal discipline on and off the court of play.

IV. To promote the concepts of teamwork, fair play and the ideals of service to each other as team members and service to the community at large.

Student AthleteSouthwestern Adventist University—Hoops Classic—is committed in the development process of the student athlete—physical, mental, social and spiritual. The student athlete is an individual who can compete in any setting with the elements of fairness, courteous behavior and gracious acceptance of both individual and contest results.

Sportsmanship CodeMay our tournament participants exemplify humbleness in victory and graciousness in defeat. Let our program be known for the highest level of competition and great sportsmanship.

Each program representative (coach/player/parent/sponsor) is expected to follow these guidelines:

1. Language should be such that it will reflect favorably on the program and its participants

2. Consider all opponents as guests—treating them with mutual respect and common courtesy.

3. Game officials and scoring table personnel are to be accorded respect at all times.

4. Skill in performance, regardless of who it is or what team he/she plays for, should be recognized and appreciated.

5. Booing and/or other negative remarks/behavior will not be tolerated.

PLEASE NOTE

Tie Breakers

1. Two Teams Tied Head to Head

2. Three Teams Tied If one team has beaten both teams—that team gets the first seed and the other two teams go to head to head results for subsequent seeding.

3. Three Teams Tied A beats B, B beats C and C beats A. Point differential will determine the first

seed. If the remaining two teams have the same

point differential scores, head to head will determine the subsequent seeding.

4. Three Teams Tied A beats B, B beats C and C beats A If point differential scores are the same, point

differential against common opponents, (maximum of 25 points), will determine the seeding.

The tournament coordinator, with assistance from designated officials will determine seeding and opponents in reference to play-in and playoff games implications.

Game LocationThank you for making the necessary adjustments to get to and from the different venues. We realize that because of venue changes your team may not be able to watch your opposite gender’s game in its entirety. Also, please keep in mind that your schools’ teams could play simultaneously. If it does happen, be prepared for this scenario. Again, thank you for your understanding.

Play-in, playoff and consolation game venues could change depending on equity of location of games during round robin play and/or whether or not teams (men/ladies) from the same school are playing.
