It makes me sad when people say there’s nothingto do around here.

Sort of in a crazy you-just-insulted-my-first-born kind of way. I get really upset. Other thanthe fact that it’s simply not true, I don’t know

exactly why it affects me the way it does.

The only conclusion I’ve come to is that Ifeel the need to defend this home I’vechosen. Like a mama bear and her cub,I feel protective of this place.

I’ve lived other places. So I know thatother green grass isn’t really so lushup close. Plus I didn’t grow up here. Andthough I came here for school, that’s not

why I came back. I didn’t move here for a jobor a relationship either.

I moved here because there was somethingabout Cedar Rapids and the corridor area thatspoke to me. I’ve often said this area getsunder your skin. Which isn’t a very poetic orpretty way of describing what I mean, but itworks better than another metaphor I’ve heard, avelvet noose.

But, beyond the fact that I feel protective of thisplace, my hackles are also raised at that oft-quotedcomplaint because it’s totally bogus.

OK. Duh. We are not Chicago. And yes. I love visitingthat city and others as much as the next person.

But there are plenty of things that make CedarRapids a great place to live.

Take Classics at Brucemore, which I went to for

the first time last weekend. Pack a picnic. Watch a play. Allunder the stars. On the lawn of a mansion that’s a NationalTrust Historic Site.

When you go, you’ll feel silly, like I did, for not takingadvantage of this event sooner.

If you didn’t go last weekend, you still have a chance thisweekend. Go. Fifteen dollars well spent.

If you’ve never been to the estate. Again. Not to sound like abroken record, you’re missing out.

Brucemore says its mission is “to engage the public in thehistory, traditions, resources and ongoing preservation ofBrucemore for the enrichment of the community.” Its Website says they want the community to consider Brucemore itshome.

In the next few weeks there’s tons of opportunities to go“home.”

Check out the outdoor children’s theatre “The PrincessWho Wouldn’t Wear Pink” July 22 to 25. Then August 1 isBluesmore and the following weekend, August 6 to 8, isCabaret in the Courtyard.

All year there are garden shows, holiday open houses, children’s activities, garden walks, plant sale, concerts, lectures, workshops and educational programs.

Plus, did you know that the grounds — gorgeouslylandscaped gardens — are open to the public — for free— during the day? Go wander or ponder.

So, if you don’t take advantage of local gems like Brucemore,I don’t want to hear you say there’s nothing to do aroundhere. Just zip it.

Mary Frieden,30, NorthLiberty

ExecutiveDirector @Summerof the Arts

If ever anyone writes the story Mary Frieden’s life, they haveto include the shoes.

Physical shoes, the kind you find in a mall, were part ofwhat brought Mary to the Cedar Valley. And shoes of themetaphorical variety are what keep her here.

Mary talks about wearing many shoes the way most doabout hats. And these days, Mary wears a lot of shoes asthe Executive Director of the Summer of the Arts, a seriesof events held each year from May to August in Iowa City, including art and jazz festivals, concert and movie series anda fundraiser.

For almost two years now, Mary has served as the oneand only full-time employee for the Summer of the Arts, doing fundraising, marketing, human resources, volunteermanagement, T-shirt folding, handling sponsors, organizingport-a-potties and everything in between.

It’s work that she calls her “dream job.”

“It was just the perfect job for me,” Mary says. “Aperfect fit.”

Mary grew up in an artistic household in the San FranciscoBay area, with a mother who worked as a painter and whoencouraged her children to pursue their own abilities. Marypursued hers to the University of South Dakota in Vermillionbefore a visit to a friend convinced her to set roots inEastern Iowa.

“It was the perfect mid-sized city. Right in the middle ofeverything,” Mary says. “And it was close to five malls.”During the summer, Mary doesn’t find herself at the mallquite as often, as she works with the five events under theSummer of the Arts umbrella (the Iowa Arts Festival, IowaCity Jazz Festival, Friday Night Concert Series and FreeMovie Series came together in 2005. Sand in the City, afundraiser for the other events, is new this year). But Marydoesn’t do it all alone. The individual festivals retain creativecontrol (translation: no she cannot bring in your favoriteband), and a veritable army of volunteers “make everythingwork. They run like a machine.”

And her favorite part is watching it all come together.

“The first Friday Night Concert Series I stood over thecrowd at the Sheraton and saw thousands. Kids covered

the playground,” Mary says. “Seeing that makes everythingworthwhile.”It’s the people in those crowds that Mary sees as the reasonfor Summer of the Arts.

“We need to build our neighborhoods again,” Mary says.“It’s part of our mission to build community. We can dothis by connecting people at our events.”

To that end Mary is working year-round and her job reallydoes entail more work than one could guess betweensummers, like planning technology workshops for artists toteach them how to take their art and submit it to fairs andfestivals digitally.

Also recently, the Summer of the Arts (read: Mary) hasbecome the go-to organization for festivals-related advicein Iowa City, including the Iowa City Farmer’s Market, theUniversity of Iowa Student Fair and Fry Fest.

“That wasn’t a shoe we thought we’d be wearing,” she says.“It doesn’t feel like it ever slows down.”

— BLAKE

Did you know?Part of the reasonMary loves livingnear Iowa City ishow welcoming thecity is of her veganlifestyle. People inother cities gave herstrange looks whenshe asked for veganitems on the menu, but in Iowa Citymany restaurantsalready have thoseoptions listed. “It’sa totally differentfilter,” says Mary.

What she cando for youWant to volunteerfor any of theSummer of the ArtsFestivals? Mary’salways lookingfor new people tohelp out. “We wantfresh faces, peoplewho love art andculture and wantto learn to take onthose roles othersin the communityhave played.” Findout more at www.summerofthearts.org

{intheKITCHEN It’s all in the family.

First thing’s first: How do you pronouncethe name of your restaurant? It’s pronounced polly-eyes. We get asked that a lot.

What’s the best thing about working ina family restaurant?I’m the third generation of this family to work here —so, taking pride a business that’s been here forthree generations.

What jobs have you done at Pagliai’s?I’ve done them all. I’ve washed dishes, I’ve been a server, and now I make pizzas.

How would you describe a Pagliai’s pizza?Authentic Italian with tangy sauce and crisp crust. We do have a double crust, which is twice as thick, but I

think the thin crust is the best option.

What’s the strangest topping combinationyou’ve done for a customer? We have anchovies and shrimp and broccoli. I thinkthose are the most outrageous toppings that we have.

Wait — did you make a pizza with thatcombination of toppings? No! I would never put those three together.

What’s your favorite pizza topping?Sometimes just plain old sausage is great, otherwise Ilike the Palace Special — sausage, ground beef, pepper-oni, mushrooms and onion. We make our own sausageand ground beef daily.

ANDREA DIETZENBACH PHOTOS

For me, Czech food is a paradox. By all accounts it’sdelicious. It’s hearty homemade food that soothes thesoul. On the other hand, there’s a lot of gravy.

The novice food critic in me says, “this is good food,it’s beautifully prepared and authentic.” And the 8-year old in me, sitting at the kitchen table and refusingto eat my sauerkraut just says, “I don’t wanna!”

The Bohemian Bakery, Cafe & Pub is an adorable littlespot in the resurrected Czech Village in Cedar Rapids. While some businesses are still regaining their footing, this restaurant is new to the area and is embracing allthat the Czech Village is about.

The interior is split into a bakery on one side anddining room on the other, with a nightclub down ashort flight of stairs. The bakery is enticing with traysof tempting kolaches and the dining room warm andwelcoming with vintage furnishings and open windowsthat let in a lovely summer breeze. The restaurant wasbuzzing with people, which is a good sign it has madeits mark.

So with all that you may wonder what my problem is.Well, turns out Czech food just isn’t my cup of tea.

I ordered the sauerbraten, thinly sliced beef marinatedin vinegar and seasonings and simmered in a savorysauce. On the side was a bowl of sauerkraut and aserving of dense soft bread smothered in gravy.

Everything had a distinctive tang to it and while Iappreciate the idea of gravy, I’m a gal that wouldrather just have butter on my bread.

That being said. My friend who’d recommended thecafe to me and joined me for lunch had goulash, aside of sauerkraut and a potato pancake topped withapplesauce and sour cream. She really liked the foodon this visit and previous ones.

So do I recommend The Bohemian? Absolutely. If theidea of authentic, home-style food that is clearly madewith love appeals to you, it’s a must. Just don’t ask meto be your dinner date.

BOOKTALK { Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you theCliffs Notes. What they are reading right now andwhich books they can’t wait to crack open.

— NATALIE

I love when I end up loving a bookthat I would never in a million yearspick off the shelf.

Thanks to a recommendation froma colleague of mine, I had thepleasure of reading “FARMER”by Jim Harrison . This is a littlebook that packs a big punch.Chick lit it is not. The basic storyline is a 43-year-old man strugglingto choose between two women, one of which is a 17-year oldstudent of his.

Joseph (the 43-year-old man) hasspent his entire adult life makingexcuses as to why he is where heis — stuck in the same small ruralcommunity in northern Michiganwhere he grew up, still living withhis dying mother. Joseph wakes upone day and discovers, he is lostand, as a friend of his observes, thelife is draining out of him. He loseshis longtime teaching job whenthe country school where he workscloses and it appears that his onlyoption left is to take up farming.Problem is, Joseph isn’t sure iffarming is something he wants to,

or physically can, do (his leg wasmangled when he was a little boyforcing him to walk with a cane) .

Then there’s the love story. As ayoung adult, Joseph fell in lovewith a girl named Rosalee, whoeventually marries Joseph’s bestfriend, Orin. When Orin dies, Josephgets a second chance with Rosalee.Instead of picking up where thingsleft off, Joseph toys with Rosalee’sheart. Whether Joseph is trying topunish Rosalee for choosing Orinover him or whether he is just thatuncertain about what he wants outof life is up to the reader to decide.Either way Joseph does everything inhis power to screw it up, includingan affair with one of his 17-year-old students.

Harrison’s vivid descriptionsbeautifully capture the uniquenessand despair of Joseph’s strugglesand the community in which helives. At a mere 160 pages, this is a great book for a rainysummer night!

Once you finish “Farmer” check out

Harrison’s “Legends of the Fall,” thebook-turned-movie that launchedBrad Pitt’s career.

He has plenty more for your list too.Harrison is an extremely prolificwriter in many different genres, including fiction, non-fictionand poetry.

Check out some of Harrison’s otherfiction works such as “Wolf: A falsememoir,” “A Good Day to Die,”“Dalva,” “The Summer He Didn’tDie” and “Julip.” If you are intopoetry, it would be worth your timeto read “Braided Creek” which isa conversation in poetry with TedKooser. In the non-fiction realm,Harrison’s memoir “Off to the Side:A Memoir” is said to be wonderful,as is “The Raw and the Cooked:Adventures of a Roving Gourmand.”While Harrison is a wonderful writer,I have been warned (so I’ll pass thiswarning off to you) to avoid someof his works, including “The RoadHome” and “True North.”

In Maori mythology, Maru is a god of war. In Japanese,Maru is slang for “demon” or “spirit.” But this Maru isnamed after Badtz-Maru, a Japanese Sanrio penguin(think Hello Kitty).

Like their unusual name, Maru is not your typical coverband.

“One thing we pride ourselves on is being eclectic,” saysguitarist Matt Manuel.

Manuel and bass guitarist Matt “The Beard” Ash startedtheir first band, Seven Days, in 1995. After a 12-yearhiatus, the two became reacquainted and Maru wasborn in February 2007.

This time around, they were joined by Beard’s wife, Kyla, and drummer Mike Day, who was discovered by Kyla’sfather, a postal worker who was delivering Day’s mail.

All native Cedar Rapidians, the members of Maru focuson bringing a different flavor to the local band scene.Incorporating songs by Black Sabbath and Wolfmotherwith more traditional cover songs makes Maru standout from other bands in the area, Manuel says.

They plays songs that people want to hear, but alsosongs that they like to play.

“We play stuff that rocks, but not necessarily stuff that’son the radio,” Manuel says. “We really do this becausewe’re all into music as musicians.”

MUSICNOTES { You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.
