{ Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

SAYIN’I’m just

By now you’ve probably noticed that every week on the InCircle page you get a glimpse of the people behind Hoopla. Every issue they answer a new question, whether it be about their sweet tooth

or favorite piece of clothing. It’s an attempt to share more of ourselves with you. It’s only

fair since we are asking area bartenders, chefs, musicians and others to let us into their lives week in and week out.

This week’s question, “What’s your favorite sign of spring?” spurred an-swers like “Dairy Queen opening,” from Anne Kapler, who regularly contributes to

InTheKitchen and BehindTheBar, and “the start of baseball spring training,” from

Justin Braden, who has written about people you should meet as well as MusicNotes. See others’ answers on page 03.

It took a while for me to settle on an answer. There are so many things I love about spring. Originally I said that my favorite sign was the musty smell of everything coming back to life.

But that sounded kind of weird in a one-sentence answer. What I meant was that dank aroma of

plants stretching through slumbering dirt to reach the sun again. Ok. Maybe that still sounds weird. Just

go muck around in a flower bed for a few minutes and you’ll see what I mean.

The answer I finally decided on was “Opening the win-dows for the first time.” True. I love that. The back wall of our kitchen is all windows and I love to open them

wide to let in all the sounds and smells of spring.

But the thing I probably love most about the spring is the anticipation of an upcoming season chock full of events and festivals. The time is coming when weekends are bursting at the seams with things to do and places to go.

It’s starting already. A week from today, a friend of a friend, Kate Ford, who I first mentioned back in October, is throw-ing another homeshow. Kate is a crafter and artist who takes junk and makes it wonderful. True shabby chic. Her spring Gatherings by Kate show is from 6 to 9 p.m. at her house, 1824 Bever Ave. SE. If you’re a fan of repurposing trash into treasures, you won’t be disappointed.

Other events I’m giddy about, Mount Vernon’s Chalk the Walk and the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmer’s Market, are both just a little more than a month away on the first weekend in May.

I already have it all planned out. I’ll start my day at the first downtown Cedar Rapids’ farmers market of the season. Noshing on a breakfast burrito, sipping a coffee and wandering among stands with fresh veggies, colorful flowers and other goodies. I can’t think of a better way to kick off the day.

Then we’ll be off to Mount Vernon for their annual Chalk the Walk. I’ve never been before. But this is the year. Professional artists create large chalk drawings on the sidewalks of downtown Mount Vernon. Visitors color their own 2-foot-by-2-foot square. At the end of the festival the smaller squares reveal a ginourmous chalk drawing.

A perfect Saturday. And I know every weekend thereafter will be just as full of fun events.

I can’t wait.

I’m just sayin’,

Amana ColoniesMy parents came to visit us over Labor Day weekend and we decided to check out the Iowa Festival of Beers at Millstream Brewery in the Amana Colonies. My parents now want to move to Iowa. We had a BLAST. Not only did we enjoy the live music, tasty snacks and amazing craft and home brews, but we decided to have dinner at the Ox Yoke Inn. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had.

Irish DemocratCan you tell I like food? My fi rst few weeks here, people in the offi ce kept talking about the I.D. and these weird things called cheesy wontons. Finally, someone brought them in for an offi ce party; the mystery was solved and I was hooked! My husband and I went to the I.D. that weekend and gorged our-selves on cheesy wontons. Now whenever one of us has a really bad day, the other one picks them up on the way home from work. Cheesy wontons al-ways make the day better!

no. 02 no. 03 no. 05Cedar Rapids KernelsAbout a week and a half after the fl ood, my husband and I visited Cedar Rapids so that I could do some interviews and we could look for a dog-friendly apartment. This was my fi rst trip to Cedar Rapids and, on our second night in town, we went to a Kernels game. I knew imme-diately I was going to like it here. The weather was beau-tiful, the game was great and the beer was cheap. What more could you ask for?

Helen G. Nassif YMCAOne of the fi rst things my husband and I did when we moved here was join a gym. I wish we would have waited. The downtown Y is beautiful and has everything you need for a complete workout. I love that they have an indoor track, great equipment and classes. I can’t think of another place that gives you access to so many dif-ferent options.

Downtown Farmers MarketWe had a pretty impres-sive farmers market back home (in Detroit), but the quality and variety of pro-duce, baked goods, fl ow-ers and crafts available at the Downtown Farmers Market is unbelievable. My favorite booth by far is From Scratch. Their banana cupcakes? TO DIE FOR. I took my hus-band and my dog to the downtown market a few weeks later and we had lemonade from Brewed Awakenings and breakfast burritos from Victors. We also picked up local honey and tons of local produce. It was a great way to learn about the area. I had no idea there were so many wineries in Iowa!

They promise classics like “hangin’ Tough” and “step By step” on their tour. After all, those are the songs that inspired today’s 20- and 30-somethings to scribble “i heart Donnie” in their nkoTB Trapper keepers. so tight-roll those jeans and rock the side pony-tail, tickets are still available.

TStephanie Filer, 26, Cedar RapidsMarketing Director @ Junior Achievement

Stephanie Filer is the kind of person who has photos of her pets hanging in her hallway. Not just snapshots either. Professional portraits of her pooches looking regal.

She’s that person. And proud of it.

“Growing up we had one dog at a time. I always wanted a cat,” Stephanie says. “The first thing I did when I got an apartment? I got a kitty.”

Since then her menagerie has grown to two cats and two dogs. One of the dogs is a husky shepherd mix named Marley. The other is a German shep-herd named Deuce. Both are rescued dogs.

She can’t resist. And it’s getting harder now that she’s sitting on the board for the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

“It’s so difficult,” she says. “Especially when you hear all the sob stories.”

Looking into the animals’ eyes at the shelter isn’t easy either. This isn’t the kind of board experience you can phone in, she says.

Stephanie is the board spokesperson.

“I like to give a voice to those that don’t have one,” she says.

She does that in her day job for kids as the mar-keting director for Junior Achievement.

This time of year she’s busy organizing the orga-nization’s annual Taste of Spring event, a silent auction and wine and beer tasting at Siebke Hoyt

Jewelers on April 9. The rest of the year she plans other events like Junior Achievement’s Business Hall of Fame, Volleyball Challenge and Bowl for Education.

“You get to know a big variety of people,” Stephanie says. “That’s probably the thing I’ve liked most about this job.”

Stephanie also volunteers on the Downtown District’s event and program committee. And she’s training for the Chicago Marathon this fall. “I want to be able to say I did it,” she says. “With everything in my life, it’s one thing I can focus on. I am not a runner. I’m trying to become one.”

Stephanie also dabbled in lobbying earlier this year when she went to Des Moines for the Humane Society’s lobby day. She spoke to legislators about legislation affecting animals, like one that would make it a crime to watch a dogfight. The issue she feels most passionate about though is a bill that would extend protec-tive orders to pets so that women won’t feel they have to stay in an abusive relationship to protect their pets.

Her empathy for animals also has affected her diet. Stephanie was a vegetarian for four years in high school and recently went back to it.

“I looked into it for health reasons and made the decision based on animal welfare,” she says. “I’m not so much opposed to the circle of life part of it. I just think there are more humane ways to do it.”

{ Hungry? From neighborhood watering holes to fancy schmancy dining, these places might do the trick.

Double the funThe Double Inn Bar and Grill was closed for about six months after the Floods of 2008. Now it’s back, busier and better than before. On the menu: burgers, pizza, salads, appetizers, sand-

wiches, shrimp and soup. Not on the menu: daily home-cooked specials. Wash it all down with one (or two) of the 10 beers on tap.Fill-up fee: Less than $10

Details: 629 Ellis Blvd. NW, Cedar Rapids; eat-in; 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily; call (319) 366-7979

Back in businessWilly Woodburn’s has been part of one Cedar Rapids neighborhood or another since 1994. After the Floods of 2008 displaced it from its Ellis Boulevard location, the restaurant now

is reopened on 16th Avenue SW. In the new location, breakfast still is served all day. Lunch is the restaurant’s other mainstay, but owners have added dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Fill-up fee: Less than $10

Details: 232 16th Ave., SW, Cedar Rapids; eat-in; 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and Monday, call (319) 365-6768

The bestaVesta’s menu is Mediterranean-American fusion. The brick oven, visible from the dining area, is used to bake breads and made-from-scratch pizzas. Entrees also are finished in

the oven as an extra touch. The restaurant tries to buy locally and use the growing seasons. So it changes the menu a few times a year. Check out the four-course dinner for two for $50.Fill-up fee: $6 to $12 for lunch and $8 to $28 for dinner

Details: 849 Quarry Rd., Suite 100, Coralville; eat-in or carryout; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily; call (319) 338-3782 or online at www.vestaiowa.com

how did you get into the bar business?Bo-James is owned by my family. It’s my mom, my brother and me. The job works well with a school schedule. I’m taking graduate classes in English and cinema during the day, and at night I can work. Other than baby-sitting jobs, I’ve only really worked at Bo-James. We always joke that if you have experience with day care or baby-sitting, you’ll be good at working in a bar because you’re baby-sitting the kids while they’re drinking.

how do your baby-sitting skills come into play at the bar?In general, you’ve gotta have fun and play around. There’s also, like, people taking off their clothes and you have to be like, ‘Nope, keep your clothes on.’ Or if a girl is crying because she broke up with her boyfriend, you have to console her and give her tissues. Or if someone gets sick, you have to clean it up.

What’s your favorite night to work?Wednesday is country night and that’s my favorite night to work. It’s a fun crowd and people are always happy. I’m not a huge country music fan, but it’s growing on me.

What’s your advice for getting good service in a bar?Don’t just stare at the bartender and expect them to serve you. You have to hold your money straight in your hand. When someone serves you, fold the money back. That’s bar etiquette. It’s funny, because at Bo-James it’s mostly girl bartenders, but girls will still lean their boobs on the bar, and I’m like, ‘Honey, I’m not going to serve you faster for leaning over the bar that way.’

Working at a college bar, i bet you hear a lot of pickup lines. What’s the best or worst one you’ve gotten? There’s so many! I should write them down. There are the corny stereotypical ones, like, ‘Are you tired? Cause you’ve been running through my mind all day.’ The big thing now, too, is a lot of people use stuff from ‘The Pick-Up Artist.’ We also have this one guy that comes in and spills his drink on purpose so you have to come over and wipe it up and lean over him. It’s horrible.

What do you like about working in a bar in downtown iowa city?I love that there’s so many different types of bars here, and they’re so close together, so you get a variety of people that jump from bar to bar. We have a bunch of regulars, but we always get new people coming in.

Fish frySpring iS fiSh fry SeASoni decided to try something quintessentially Iowa: a fish fry! Being the daughter of a fisher-man i have been schooled in the art of properly fried catfish. My dad spent hours trolling the Cedar river. once you saw flour scattered everywhere in the kitchen and heard the fry-ing pan popping, you knew you were in for a treat.

Those were the images swimming (pun-intended) in my head as i eagerly stood in line on a friday night at the Knights of Columbus. There were swarms of old folks, young families trying to be good for lent and seas of women in hairnets lining tables with sliced pie.

i piled my plate with golden fish but was disappointed to discover it was cod. egads! Com-pared to catfish, cod is a sad and lowly substitute.

But i realized i was asking a lot. how could i expect these courtly knights to come up with piles of that perfect catfish to feed the masses? After all, they weren’t Jesus.

i enjoyed my dinner. The cod was fried well, the french fries crispy and coleslaw creamy. Unfortunately, the pie was clearly store-bought. i recognized the signature Sara Lee crust.

Was i disappointed? A little. But sitting at the banquet table among all the Midwest chatter, i realized this fish fry served its purpose.

Want to try a bite, go to www.HooplaNow.com/events and search for “fish fry.”

“I wish I read more.” “I never have time to read.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. Life is busy and we spend our time doing what we love. I’m not here to judge. But if you are one of those people who wish you had time to read, here are some suggestions for how to fi nd the time in unlikely places.

■ During meals: This doesn’t work, say, at family Christmas dinner, but lunch and breakfast work great! Any time you’re eating alone, pull out your trusty book. Bonus time added if you get breaks during the work day. Gossip is bad for morale anyway.

■ Public transportation: Live along a bus line? Save yourself some gas money and take the bus to work. Spend your commute reading instead of listening to annoying radio commercials in the car.

■ During televised sporting events: For multi-tasking readers, sports can provide an excellent backdrop to a good book. Put the TV on mute or low volume, read away, and only look up for the big catches or fourth-and-one plays.

■ While breast-feeding: I’m just sayin’. It can work once you get good.

■ During TV commercials: Can’t miss “Grey’s?” Just read during commercial breaks. Maybe you’ll enjoy your book so much, you’ll turn the TV off.

■ Adult D.E.A.R. time: C’mon, I’m not the only child of the ’80s who had “drop everything and read” time in elementary school. It works great on Saturday morning or any night after dinner.

■ While on hold: Pass the 20 minutes on hold with your credit card company by getting in a few chapters.

■ Engage in Inappropriate Reading ™: My family is not a fan, but sometimes a book is so good, Inappropriate Reading™ occurs. This can hap-pen anywhere — family boating, at a wedding reception, during a boring game of Cranium, at a birthday party, during Fourth of July fi reworks, in the car when you’re supposed to be keeping the driver awake with witty repartee, during continu-ing education seminars. Use your imagination. Apologize if you get caught.

■ Cheat and listen to books on tape: Pick up hours of “reading” while doing laundry, cleaning the house, running/walking/biking, traveling, do-ing yard work, or commuting. At least you can talk about “The Kite Runner” when everyone else is. A secret: it’s the EXACT SAME book.

Reading doesn’t have to be its own event. It’s perfectly compatible with many daily activities. Have fun and post your favorite times to read at

Funk-StopTHE TALENT: Marcus Perkins (vocals), Kevin K.D. Sims (vocals), Steve Shanley (keyboards), John Hall (bass), John Reasoner (guitar), Ryan Hoagland (drums), Jeff Schafer (baritone sax), Bob Manson (trombone), Peter Hart (tenor sax), Jason Maiers (trumpet) and Steve King (trumpet).THE SOUND: Jazz fusionTHE GIGS: April 3 @ 1st Ave Live!THE REST OF THE STORY: www.funk-stop.com

What happens when you combine 11 musicians of varying ages, infl uences and backgrounds? In the case of Funk-Stop, you get a high impact, soulful sound that features powerful horns and rhythm.

Hailing from all over the country, including Washing-ton D.C., and Chicago, all members found their way to Cedar Rapids and each other. From the ashes of Funk 101, Funk-Stop has a new drummer, but the same in-struments and many of the same musicians. Many are music instructors with doctorates and masters degrees by day, as well as musicians who play for a living. They also welcomed back one of their original singers who spent several years fronting Mean Street and the Hell Horns.

“About a year ago, Steve Shanley, John Hall and I had lunch and talked about putting a kick-ass horn band together to do more Jazz/Fusion,” says guitar-ist Reasoner. “We are very lucky to be able to do this where we live. It has given us the opportunity to give

back to the community by way of benefi ts and school (performances). Being able to do what you love and help others is what it is all about.”

Inspired by Tower of Power, James Brown and Earth, Wind and Fire, Funk-Stop currently performs covers but hopes to tackle original material soon.

“Our main goal is to keep playing together,” Reasoner

says. “We don’t really care too much about the money.

We are in it for the music.”Drummer Ryan “Hoagy” Hoagland agrees.

“We have a blast playing on stage with each other, playing great music,” he says. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”

GETOUT { We’ve got talent.

Cedar Rapids may be nearly 2,000 miles from the theatrical meccas of Hollywood and New York, but there’s a lot of talent between the Rockies and the Mississippi right here in Eastern Iowa. Need proof? Head to Broadway Maybies, the annual fundraiser for the Young Parents Network, on Friday or to CSPS on Saturday and Sunday for performances by two area playwrights.

{

Local playwrights: A night of original theater Information: (319) 364-1580 or www.legionarts.org

Legion Arts presents two new works by Eastern Iowa playwrights: “My Father’s Imaginary Friend” by Monica Leo of West Liberty and the premiere of “Cedar Rapids Famous” by Joe Jennison of Cedar Rapids. Both plays offer a humorous view of prejudices. “My Father’s Imaginary Friend,” told through puppets, is the story of Leo’s parents and their immigration experiences. Leo is founder and lead puppeteer of Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre. “Cedar Rapids Famous” is a one-act comedy set in and around Cedar Rapids in the summer of 2007, during the 22-and-a-half hours when same-sex marriage was legal in Iowa. Jennison is executive director of the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance.

See both plays at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (3/27 and 3/28) at CSPS, 103 Third St. SE, Cedar Rapids. The plays are appropriate for audiences high school-aged and older. After the performances, join the artists for an informal reception. Tickets are $13 in advance and $16 day of show. Student rush tickets priced at $5 go on sale one hour before the show.
