HOOLES intrepid adventurer Jenny Beyer is at it againthis month, doing the Three Peaks Challenge.

On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July Jenny will be

attempting to scale the highest peaks in England,Scotland and Wales within a 24 hour period with theaim of raising money for a hospital in Uganda calledKisiizi.

Jenny said: I am doing the challenge throughthe Countess of Chester Hospital becausethey support it by

helping to nance the training of their nurses. My aim is to raise 500 and I amreally looking forward to the challenge.

It certainly will be a challenge aswe are climbing the three peaks,Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pikein 24 hours.

She has been running half marathonsto prepare for the task and last year sheclimbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising fundsfor the Countess in the process.

Jenny added: I have completed two half marathons so far this year, both with lots

of hills!. I think its time for a different sort of challenge. It is going to be very tough as I amclimbing three mountains in 24 hours so therewont be much time for sleep!

P lants in ower this month includedelphiniums with their tall blue and whitespires of owers. They tend to die off insevere winters and get eaten by slugs as they emerge in spring so you may need to buy new plants in some years. Cut back the dead oweringstems and many with give you a second oweringin late autumn.For those who are lucky to have moist or boggy soil,

there are some lovely plants for these situations. PurpleLoosestrife or Lythrum virgatum Rose Queen or The Rocketprovide tall spikes of pink owers which would look goodrising up above hostas or low growing perennials.Honeysuckle owers in the hedgerows and it is a lovely plant that

will often ower into autumn. Try scented varieties of Lonicerapericlymenum (our native honeysuckle) such as Serotina orGraham Thomas. They will ower best in light shade and inconditions where the roots are shaded. Try to replicate theirnatural conditions, growing through hedges with rootshaded, moist soil and owers in sun. Too hot a positionand they get mildew on the leaves and fail to ower.Some plants such as perennial Geraniums, Catmint and

Centaurea Montana will have nished owering. Cut back the owering stems and some of the leaves and you will nd that the plant will put on new growth and often asecond ush of owers.Continue sowing seeds of salads such as beetroot and radishes

to extend the season lettuce seeds do not like too high atemperature for germination so sowing on a cooler series of days is best. Also sow seeds of French beans, winter salad leaves, carrotsand turnips. Do make sure that brassica plants are netted. Iknow of one person who recently lost all the newly planted brassicas to pigeons.

New potatoes can be harvested especially if the plants arein ower as this usually indicates the potatoes are of a goodsize. Leeks should be planted in holes about 4 to 6 inchesdeep to ensure the stems are blanched white. I use thehandle of a trowel to make a hole, drop the leek into it then water in so the water puddles at the base of the hole. Theleek will grow away to ll the hole and give long white leeks in

winter.

Foodshare scheme for families feeli g the pi chWITH the cost of living on the rise, and many families of Chester feeling the pinch, do you

have some spare time to help set up a Chester foodshare scheme? The aim is to providelow cost or free healthy meals to people in Chester from a community centre once a week.Foodshare schemes are well established in places like Manchester and London.

Once the need is established (by talking to local charities, churches, council), it wouldthen be a case of approaching supermarkets to obtain unsold food past its sell-by date (notuse-by date). This food can then be used to prepare meals by volunteers (perhaps youngpeople seeking new skills). The scheme would also depend on some food donations frompublic, allotments, churches, schools and perhaps the cooperation of a local college.

People would be asked to donate what they think the meal is worth if they are able to. If successful, the scheme could provide training for young people, skills for families wishing to

Joanne who was made redundant from herjob. She was furious and took her employers tocourt where she won an out of court settlement.However she then spent the next two years inher dressing gown, feeling sorry for herself and

spending all the money received. She still sawherself as a victim of life s circumstances.

I psyched myself up, gave myself a good talking

to and got out of bed knowing that last nightsDVD and comfort food was going to mark aitting end of such inactivity for a while. I treatedthe Jubilee weekend in the same way that most treat the New Year. In all fairness, I had plannedmy healthier lifestyle for about the last threeand a half years but just not put it into practice.

So, today as the sun shone (for about an hour)to mark the start of the positive, I walked intothe lounge and was not put o by the carnage of

last night. I moved the mixing bowl of inediblepop corn kernels from the sofa and folded thetakeaway pizza box small enough to it into therecycling bin. I lipped open the laptop to beginmy clean up and thats when it happened.There was a wrapper on the loor. Id eatenthe o ending item prior to the wake up andwas simply picking up the empty wrapper totake through to the kitchen when a perfectlyformed crumb fell onto the co ee table. Without

even thinking Id licked my inger, poked thecrumb and bam! Id been clean for a matter of minutes and already this crumb of Cadburysevil had exploded in my mouth in the same way

a gremlin multiplies with a single drop of water.I was overcome with the taste sensation of amillion Easter eggs and so I fell from the wagonbefore the horses had even been hitched.

Chocol t ictionMy chocolate ixation went from bad to worse.

I o ered to make another cup of tea so I couldraid the cupboard but wed eaten the last of theCurly Wurlys. My sudden desperation took meto new lows and a bow down respectfully tomy female friends who I once mocked for theirmonthly chocolate addictions.

As the kettle boiled I chomped down on thelast four squares of some cooking chocolateId found stashed away. Unsatis ied by what reminded me of eating doggy treats when Iwas a kid (how does cooking chocolate taste somuch better cooked) I began snif ing the Greenand Blacks chocolate powder.

As youve probably guessed, I did the ingerdip. Well, to be honest, it was a spoon dip andthought, as a result, I had suddenly been cured.I was still snif ing, eyes closed and savouringthe lavour while my hand blindly fumbledaround in the draw for a teaspoon. I had everyintention of pulling just a teaspoon but was not disappointed when I came out with a dessert spoon. Remember, I was a man possessed at thisstage and, to be fair, drinking chocolate tubs are

big enough for a hand trowel! I heaped it andshoved it into my mouth, the noise of the kettlereaching boiling point could not disguise thetotal destruction that ensued. As soon as thepowder touched my tongue it drew every inchof moisture from my mouth and cementedmy teeth and gums. I tried to swallow but the powder had begun to clump in a massivegolf ball sized lump. I panicked I would not be able to breath and took a sharp intake of breath. The powder hit the back of my throat and the cough re lex kicked in omitting a thick brown cloud into the atmosphere. The shock triggered a gasp, the powder, the gag re lex andthe vicious cycle resulted in the kitchen illingwith a brown smoke, my lungs desperatelytrying to ight the alien invasion, the worktopsvanishing under a blanket of Green and Blacksand as I ran to the sink and threw my headunder the tap, I dropped the entire pot! Indoorireworks have nothing on this.

you need to clear up what looked like tentonnes of chocolate powder, a word to thewise; dont use a wet sponge!

given my mouth a gappy pirate expressionand the stream of encrusted drool made it look as if I had been doing rounds with DavidHaye. That, or Id been snuf ling for truf les

in the back yard! Either way, my Zombie likeappearance coupled with the kitchen massacresent my other half into a state of shock!

So along with the ireworks, live musicand union jacks hanging from neighbouringHoole windows, my Jubilee was spent tryingto rediscover my kitchen, cure my chocolateaddiction, kick start my healthier lifestyle andresuscitate my other half!

I dreaded the jubilee hangover. I had visions

of 2012 lags embossed with the queens headstill clinging to the sides of dirty disusedof ices in 2019 pretty much in the same waythat some cars still sport those red noses from12 years ago. But, that said, I can re lect onour Jubilee celebrations and laugh, not onlyat Cheryl Coles live attempt at the Queensconcert, but at the Hoole Kitchen Massacrethat I am sure will be retold in my family formany generations to come!

For a less messy way to cure your chocolateixation, freeze a regular Snickers (or othersuitably nutty chocolate confectionary) forthe satisfying CRUNCH of all your front teethbreaking at once!

With the irst major celebration out of theway and Hoole refreshed and ready for thenext big thing, I now welcome the summer.Id like to take this opportunity to thank thepeople of Hoole for not running me over orcalling the police when I can through the highstreet in search of cleaning products grinninglike a pirate and scaring small children!

What has happened to the British summer!! Flaming June its been more like freezingJune! I am convinced that the weather has a major effect on the psychology of the

nation. Wouldnt it be great if we could guarantee the next couple of months with wall to wall sunshine, we would all feel better and get out of the house the BBQ would be out every weekend and we would enter into more conversations with ourneighbours as we were all out and about much more!

However, if we didnt have the British weather then what would we talk about? A comment about the weather is the opening line to many conversationsand this is due primarily I think, to the fact that in England we can have all4 seasons in one day, our weather is so changeable. In fact it was only theend of May that we had sunshine and high temperatures. The truth is thatnext week we might be all basking in wall to wall sunshine and getting oursuntan lotion and sun hats out again! In fact it has been known to snow in June,in Buxton on 2nd June 1975, rudely and infamously affecting a cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire at Buxton where early afternoon snow covered the pitch with around an inch of snow.

Over the years Ive been involved in a number of events that have reliedcompletely on the weather being warm and dry for the event to be successful. Onmore than one occasion I have offered a heart felt prayer to God to ask that therain stops and for the sun to break through dark clouds. In particular the Funday on a Sunday that used to take place here in Hoole during the naughties saw the wonderful blessing of sunshine on that particular day even when much of the weather in the preceding daysand weeks had been wet and miserable! However dont ask me to explain why our recent Jubilee Celebrationin Alexandra Park was subject to relentless rain?? I can only think it had something to do with the tradition of rain on these special occasions to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen as our monarch long my she reign overus!!!

Ive been asked many times this year if we are holding another Funday on a Sunday, Im afraid the answer fornow is no instead the organisation that partnered with the 4 Hoole Churches, Light Project has put its energy in helping other churches around the city to organise there own Funday or community event and throughoutthe summer there have been 4/5 activities in different locations. In Chester this summer we will still see the young people of our Hoole churches involved in Engage as over 100 young people and youth leaders fromacross Chester will gather from July 22 to 25. During the afternoons look out for these youngsters in theirEngage tee shirts as they engage in Community Projects including free car washing, garden tidying and sportsprojects.

There is so much talk about the state of socity in the UK and there is no doubt that the youth of ournation have the spotlight on them, with so many bad news stories, however shows like Britains Got Talentdemonstartes that there are some young people who are making a postive contruibution to life. Yet we can seethat many in the next generation are in need of postive role models, the communiictation of good values and amoral and spiritual underatnding of life. Churches across Chester are running Open Youth Clubs on a weekly basis, with over 300 teenagers involved in them. A large propostion of these are part of the DBiz Youth Work run in partnership with the Light Project. There are 2 of these clubs here in Hoole at the Hoole LighthouseCentre, run by church volunteers using the experince and expertise of DBiz to provide well resourced andexciting evenings of activities for young people.

I believe there is a place for Christianity to be involved in the process of forming the next generation and partof my mission in life is to make sure we hand over the torch of Christainty to the future generation, and I cantell you that within Chester there are many good, strong and committed teenagers who are following JesusChrist.
