Managing DirectorAlan Ball feels that it’sall about service. ‘Ourproduct is simple. Ifyour double glazing ismisted up we can replacethe glass at a fractionof the cost of a newwindow, in any type offrame, and with a new5 year guarantee. But

it’s not just about savingpeople money, althoughthat obviously helps. Many tradespeople havestruggled since last yearand I honestly feel thatduring the good times aminority perhaps didn’tfocus on customer careas much as they shouldhave done. We makesure we turn up when wesay we will, do the jobthe customer requiresand leave their house asclean as a whistle. keeps on snapping!HOOLE’S most prolic photographer has been at it again! The GATSO speed camera on Hoole Road, by the playing elds and opposite the UnitedReformed Church) is officially the most successful in Cheshire.Data obtained by the Chester Chronicle newspaper under a Freedom of Information request

shows that the Hoole camera catches more than 20 drivers every day.It snapped 7,360 vehicles in the 12 months up to March 2015, with average nes ranging from

£60 to £100 depending on how fast they were going. It catches more than twice the number ofthe second most successful camera, on the A49 in Warrington.

Its success is based on the fact that so many drivers have come off the motorway and don’tsee the camera when they come round the corner as it is partially obscured by branches.

Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.

THE houses Nos. 189 – 203 Hoole Lane(see picture opposite) were built in thelate 1920’s on land which was a marketgarden run by H. S. Roberts called “The Oaks”.

Two of the properties appear in a 1927/8Directory and all are listed in 1929/30. An aerialview (courtesy of “Britain from Above” website)shows them in 1931. Locally they were known

as Roberts Row. Apparently the Roberts familyowned the land and were able to build on it, andin 1933/34 no fewer than three of the houseswere actually occupied by families called Roberts.

Originally all the houses had individual names

    – the only one displaying its name today is No.195 “Sunningdale”. I n the 1933/4 Directory onlythree of the four houses to the east of it (i.e. in thedirection of Piper’s Ash) were named (presumablyone was unoccupied). There is speculation aboutNo. 195 which could have been called “Marna”,“Deepdene” or “Brindlewood”.

The original No. 205 was a farm house set

back where Hornbeam Close is today. This wasoccupied from 1927/8 until the 1950’s by a GeorgeE. Roberts and was called “Lynwood”. GeorgeE. Roberts looked after the spinney behind PineGrove and had large chicken houses there. (The

spinney had been planted to block out the view ofthe Workhouse lower down Hoole Lane so that thethen lady owner of Hoole House could see neitherit nor the poor and destitute of Chester forced toseek shelter therein.) The spinney can be seenon the aerial photograph which was taken before

Pine Grove was built around 1932, Myrtle Grovehaving already been completed. The white buildingvery near to Hoole Lane below Myrtle Grove(level with the smoke from a passing train) wasShortridge’s Dairy Farm which was still operatingand selling milk in the late 1950’s.

When the Royal Agricultural Show was held inHoole in 1893 the site extended from Hoole Roadacross the current playing eld, also taking in whatis now Alexandra Park, Lime Grove, Canadian

Avenue and the allotment area to Hoole Lane. The cattle pens for the Show were located near towhere Roberts Row stands today.

Even earlier, the Tithe Map for Hoole circa 1839showed that the eld name for the narrow northside of Hoole Lane from Canadian Avenue toPine Grove was “Lower Slang” owned jointly byMrs. Frances Bagnall and the Rev. Peploe WilliamHamilton. (Peploe St later became Westminster Rd

and Hamilton St remains one of the most attractivestreets in Hoole.)

This land on the north side was sold in 1852 – thesale details show that Hoole Lane was then calledSt. Anne’s Lane. When the Workhouse was built in1878 it was for a short time known as WorkhouseLane. Hoole Lane was a long established routefrom Chester through Boughton to Guilden Suttonand remained a country lane for many years, thelast farm “Batemans” not being developed for

housing until the middle of the 20th Century.

    HOOLE RANGERS FC

For more information about Hoole Rangers FC please contact Glyn Roberts Mob: 07515 805966e-mail: [email protected] Website: www. HooleRangersFC.com

HOOLE RANGERS have reluctantly decided towithdraw the 1st team from the Chester and Wirralfootball league premier division.Unfortunately, several of last year’s players

chose not to play again this year, and despite thetremendous efforts of everyone involved in theclub, particularly 1st team manager Mark Roberts,we were unable to recruit the players necessary tocompete at the level required in the premier league. We tried out a number of new players in two leaguegames but defeats of 14-3 and 3-1 convinced uswe could not compete in this league and that

something drastic needed to be done.We have liaised all along with the league

committee, who were totally supportive andhelpful, but the inevitable decision was taken earlyin November to drop the 1st team and move forwardwith just one team in Division Two.With the club in so much disarray at the start of

the season, the results for the reserves have beenmixed but with the additional players now available,we have won games and moved to a respectable

mid table position, which is a decent platform tolaunch the new restructured club. We are hopeful

that with time, we can rebuild the playing squadand turn the club once again into a real force in localfootball. Now that the difficult decisions are made,

and all players are aware of our plans goingforward, the atmosphere around the club hasimproved dramatically. We have added new playerrepresentatives to the committee so feel reallypositive about the future. The team and officials are all doing a great job,

but we would still like to strengthen the club in thefollowing areas :l New Players. We train on Thursday evenings onthe all-weather pitches at County Officers so comeand join usl Sponsors. Helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc.l New committee members. We have 5 committeemembers made up from team managers andplayers. What we need now is people who arewilling to help with the organisation of the club, e.g.by helping on Saturday afternoons, fundraising etc.

    GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

THE year end is approaching and it is time to enjoythe small splashes of colour in the garden. Frost is sopretty on the most ordinary of foliage so enjoy thefrosting on the humble blackberry leaf (see photo) orthe large at dying heads of Sedum or Hydrangea.I know I have mentioned this before but one of myfavourite shrubs Viburnum bodnantense Dawn, started owering in October and is heavy with scentin milder periods throughout winter. Plant it near aregular thoroughfare so you can catch the honeyedscent daily.

For colour the evergreens take the stage inwinter. Some conifers have architectural shapesprovided they are given space to grow naturally.

Chamaecyparis pisifera Filifera Aurea is a bit ofa mouthful of a name but it will grow as a broadpyramid shape with drooping golden foliage allyear and can be clipped to keep it compact. Partnerit with the rich deep green leaves and red berriesof mounded Skimmia and some glaucous blueEuphorbia characias wulfenii.

Other plants that may be in ower includeMahonia media, the varieties Charity or WinterSun are often seen for sale. This is a tall shrub with

evergreen large spiky leaves and long stems coveredwith tiny yellow scented owers. Mahonias are greatfor striking winter colour and if they get too tall, cutstems down in early spring and they will re-sproutnew shoots for next winter.

Jobs to do in the garden include pruning grapevineswhen the plant is fully dormant in winter. Theyproduce sap when stems are cut and can havedisease introduced to the cut when the plant isgrowing. Pruning in winter when the sap will notbleed prevents this from happening.

Make sure plants in pots are protected from frostby making sure the pots are not waterlogged as theyare more likely to freeze and crack in cold weather.

Take a plastic bag larger than the pot, cut the bottomoff to allow drainage and then stuff with straw to thetop of the pot. Move lemon or orange trees in pots togreenhouse or cool conservatory and do the samefor pelargoniums. Last year I kept mine dry in pots inthe garage by a window and they came through togrow on this year.

A is for AngelsThere are angels everywhere in the Christmas Story; angels had acritical role to play in the birth of the Christ-child.B is for BethlehemHistory’s greatest gure was born, not in a palace. mansion or ahospital, but in a stable!C is for Carols“Away in a Manger” is the best known and best loved Christmas Carol, according to a recent poll. With more than 7 out of 10 adults attendinga Carol service every year.D is for DecorationsIn a Nativity play recently, all the lights were to be turned off, leavingonly one light in the manger. At the appropriate moment all light wentout, even the manger light. The silence was broken when one of thelittle shepherds whispered loudly “Hey, you turned off Jesus!”E is for EmmanuelThe birth of Jesus shows us once and for all that God is not above us oragainst us but rather among us.F is for FamiliesChristmas was going to be different this year. Dad spoke to the familyabout use of time, excessive spending on gifts and the need for lesarguments. He ended with, “Lets make this best Christmas ever!” Hislittle son replied “But dad I don’t see how we can improve on the rstChristmas!G is for GiftsChristmas is about giving and receiving of gifts. On average most UKfamilies will spend between £530 and £682 on gifts, decorations, foodand drink.H is for HerodHerod was the rst man who hated Christmas. He was the originalGrinch. Herod represents all attempts to destroy Christmas as a festivaland to erdaicate all talk of Jesus.I is for InnkeeperIn the Nativity play Mary and Joseph knocked on the door, the innkeepercame to the door. “Can we have a room for the night asked Joseph. TheInnkeeper replied, come in, you can have the best room in the hotel. There was a pause. But Joseph was a quick thinker, he looked over theinnkeepers shoulder, turned to Mary and said, “We not staying a dumplike that, Come on Mary we’ll sleep in the stable!”J is for JosephJoseph is denitely the forgotten hero of the nativity story. Josephstood faithfully by Mary and was a father to Jesus as the boy grewup. In our time, when ‘absent fathers’ has become epidemic Joseph’sexample is a powerful one.K is for KingsThe top three things overheard on the Wise Men’s Journey toBethlehem3. You guys ever eat camel meat I hear it tastes like chicken2. Man, I’m starting to get a rush from this frankincense!

    1. All this staring at a star while riding a camel is making me woozy –I’m going to be sick!!L is for LoveIt is the season in which we are reminded of the importance of lovingothers, of giving rather than receiving. For God so loved the world thathe gave his only son.M is for MaryAt a Nativity Play all was going well until the angel appeared and toldthe girl playing Mary she was going to be have a baby. But how can thisbe said Mary since I am a Viking!N is for NativityChristian art has made the nativity scene gloriously hygienic. But thetruth is, the stable or cave where Jesus was born would have beensmelly, dirty and untidy.O is for Origins

Have you ever thought why have a Christmas tree? Who pulled the rstCracker? Who sent the rst Christmas card? Why do we call it BoxingDay? Was Jesus really born on December 25th?

P is for PeaceWho can forget in the First WorldWar, when British and Germansoldiers laid down their weaponscame into No Man’s land andplayed a game of football onChristmas Day? The rstChristmas Day was greeted withthe angels declaring “peaceon earth”Q is for QueuesIt was the week beforeChristmas; in one longqueue to a check out till, one man was heard tosay, “they should killthe guy who startedChristmas. A lady, furtherback in the line replied, “Theydid – they hung him on across!”R is for RevellingThe birth of a child is an occasion for great rejoicing – Jesus’ birth wasno different. Today, however, the rejoicing, is less associated with thisbirth, it is motivated by the joy of having days off work and the excessof food and drink.S is for SantaA little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual questions,“And what would you like for Christmas?” The child started at him openmouthed and horried for a minute then gasped, “Didn’t you get myemail?”T is for ThanksgivingChristmas is a time when we should excel in the gratitude attitude.Thanksgiving is therefore as much a part of Christmas as anythingelse.U is for UnselshnessThis Christmas, why not live simply, so that others may simply live. It’sChristmas every time you let God love others through you, every timeyou smile at your neighbour and offer him your hand.V is for VisitingChristmas is a time when we visit family and friends and when weourselves receive visitors. The startling truth about Christmas is thatGod in Christ chose to make an extraordinarily journey from heaven toearth to visit us.W is for WonderWas there a moment, known only to God, when all the stars held theirbreath, when the galaxies paused in their dance for a fraction of asecond, and the Word, who had called it all into being, went with all Hislove into the womb of a young girl?

X is for XmasYou could say we have taken the Christ out of Christmas, if you do thisall you are left with is M & S!!Y is YuleThis was a mid winter festival which included the burning of a Yule log.It is associated with the longest day and looks forward to the comingof spring.Z is for Zonked OutThe festivities of Christmas end with the sigh of contentment and thesound of snoring as granddad falls asleep after his Christmas lunch.

May I take this opportunity in saying I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and close with this Celtic Christmasblessing: Te light of the Christmas star to you. Te warmth ofhome and hearth to you. Te cheer and good will of friends to

you. Te hope of a childlike heart to you. Te joy of a thousandangels to you. Te love of the Son and God’s peace to you. Amen
